  • How do I efficiently write a "toggle database value" function in AJAX?

    Say I have a website which shows the user ten images and asks them to categorise each image by clicking on buttons. A button for "funny", a button for "scary", a button for "pretty" and so on. These buttons aren't exclusive. A picture can be both funny and scary. The user clicks the "funny" button. An AJAX request is sent off to the database to mark that image as funny. The "funny" button lights up, by assigning a class in the DOM to mark it as "on". But the user made a mistake. They meant to hit the next button over. They should click "funny" again to turn it off, right? At this point I'm not sure whats the most efficient way to proceed. The database knows that the "funny" flag is set, but it's inefficient to query the database every time a button is clicked to say, is this flag set or not, then go on with a second database call to toggle it. Should I infer the state of the database flag from the DOM, i.e. if that button has the class "on" then the flag must be set, and branch at that point? Or would it be better to have a data structure in Javascript in the page which duplicates the state of each image in the database, so that every time I set the database flag to true, I also set the value in the Javascript data to true and so on?

    Hi, I am new to this site, so I really hope I will provide all the necessary information regarding my question. I've been trying to create a "new message arrived notification" using long polling. Currently I am initiating the polling request by window.onLoad event of each page in my site. On the server side I have an infinite loop: while(1){ if(NewMessageArrived($current_user))break; sleep(10); } echo $newMessageCount; On the client side I have the following (simplified) ajax functions: poll_new_messages(){ xmlhttp=GetXmlHttpObject(); //... xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=got_new_message_count; //... xmlhttp.send(); } got_new_message_count(){ if (xmlhttp.readyState==4){ updateMessageCount(xmlhttp.responseText); //... poll_new_messages(); } } The problem is that with each page load, the above loop starts again. The result is multiple infinite loops for each user that eventually make my server hang. *The NewMessageArived() function queries MySQL DB for new unread messages. *At the beginning of the php script I run start_session() in order to obtain the $current_user value. I am currently the only user of this site so it is easy for me to debug this behavior by writing time() to a file inside this loop. What I see is that the file is being written more often than once in 10 seconds, but it starts only when I go from page to page. Please let me know if any additional information might help. Is there a way to return the GameID value without displaying it? The second thing: How to I grab a value from the auto-suggest once it is returned? Say I want to grab the GameID, or if I can't do that, the "TitleName" to use that in my query? I tried passing it to the form this way: action="search.cfm?GameID=#cfautosuggestvalue.GameID#" - but that does not work. How do I reference the autosuggestionvalue varaibles for use? Thanks

  • jQuery AJAX request (Rails 3) gets redirected and returns empty message body!

    I'm trying to do a manual jQuery AJAX request the following way: $("#user_plan_id").change(function() { $("#plan_container").load('/plans/' + this.value); }); I have the "rails.js" file included in my header, and a "<%= csrf_meta_tag %". I see from my log that the request IS getting to the server (although without the authenticity token... does rails.js even do this?), but the response is a 302 (Found) rather than 200, and no data actually gets rendered. Any ideas? Edit: I now see that the first request redirects, and the proper partial gets rendered on the redirect. However, the 2nd response's body (on the client-side) is still empty. I'm guessing jQuery uses the first response and doesn't have a listener set up for the redirect. How do I get around this? Also, another note: the page doing the requesting is an HTTPS page. Here is what my log says: Started GET "/plans/221168073" for 127.0.0.1 at Tue Jun 15 01:24:06 -0400 2010 Processing by PlansController#show as HTML Parameters: {"id"=>"221168073"} DEPRECATION WARNING: Using #request_uri is deprecated. If i don't do this only the last field gets translated. My code works nicely, but because of the infinite loop, i keep getting errors from Mozilla to "stop executing scripts". That JSP page contains a dynamic content - e.g. content that is based on values received from the current session. I solved this problem , but I'm in doubt because I think that my solution is bad , or maybe there is better solution since I'm not expert.     Working on a Wicket application that adds markup to the DOM after onLoad via Wicket's built-in AJAX for an auto-complete widget. We have an IE6 glitch that means I need to reposition the markup coming in, and I am trying to avoid tampering with the Wicket javascript... blah blah blah... here's what I'm trying to do: New markup arrives in the DOM (I don't have access to a callback) Somehow I know this, so I fire my code. I tried this, hoping the new tags would trigger onLoad events: $("selectorForNewMarkup").live("onLoad", function(){ //using jQuery 1.4.1 //my code }); ...but have become educated that onLoad only fires on the initial page load. Is there another event fired when elements are added to the DOM? Or another way to sense changes to the DOM? Everything I've bumped into on similar issues with new markup additions, they have access to the callback function on .load() or similar, or they have a real javascript event to work with and live() works perfectly. Is this a pipe dream?

  • How to catch an expected (and intended) 302 Ajax response?

    So, if you look back at my previous question about Exchange Autodiscover, you'll see that the easiet way to get the autodiscover URL is to send a non-secure, non-authenticated GET request to the server, ala: http://autodiscover.exchangeserver.org/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml The server will respond with a 302 redirect with the correct url in the Location header. I'm trying out something really simple at first with a Chrome extension, where I have: if (req.readyState==4 && req.status==302) { return req.getResponseHeader("Location"); } With another ajax call set up with the full XML Post and the user credentials, But instead Chrome hangs at this point, and a look at the developer panel shows that it is not returning back the response but instead is acting like no response was given, meanwhile showing a Uncaught Error: NETWORK_ERR: XMLHttpRequest Exception 101 in the error log. The way I see it, refering to the exact response status is about the same as "catching" it, but I'm not sure if the problem is with Chrome/WebKit or if this is how XHR requests always handle redirects. I'm not sure how to catch this so that I can get still get the headers from the response. Or would it be possible to set up a secondary XHR such that when it gets the 302, it sends a totally different request? Quick Update I just changed it so that it doesn't check the response code: if (req.readyState==4) { return req.getResponseHeader("Location"); } and instead when I alert out the value it's null. and there is still the same error and no response in the dev console. SO it seems like it either doesn't track 302 responses as responses, or something happens after that wipes that response out?

    I have the following drop down list which is using the Ajax Toolkit to provide a combo box <cc1:ComboBox ID="txtDrug" runat="server" style="font-size:8pt; width:267px;" Font-Size="8pt" DropDownStyle="DropDownList" AutoCompleteMode="SuggestAppend" AutoPostBack="True" ontextchanged="txtDrug_TextChanged" /> Now I need to load this up with approx 7,000 records which takes a considerable time, and effects the response times when the page is posted back and forth. The code which loads these records is as follows; dtDrugs = wsHelper.spGetAllDrugs(); txtDrug.DataValueField = "pkDrugsID"; txtDrug.DataTextField = "drugName"; txtDrug.DataSource = dtDrugs; txtDrug.DataBind(); However if I could get an event to fire when a letter is typed instead of having to load 7000 records it is reduced to less than 50 in most instances. I think this can be done in Javascript. So the question is how can I get an event to fire such that when the form starts there is nothing in the drop down, but as soon as a key is pressed it searches for those records starting with that letter. The .Net side of things I'm sure about - it is the Javascript I'm not. Thanks in advance

In the servlet , I want to extract these values and use them . for example: The user checks some checkboxes , for example, list of messages. He/She presses Delete Link to delete selected messages. I'm using this on a drag and drop build-a-bracelet type of application, and the amount of images returned is sometimes in the 500s. So it get's pretty held up during transmission, sometimes 10 seconds or so. I know I'd do good by caching them some way, just not sure how to go about it. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks. -Wes

  • How To Call Javascript In Ajax Response? IE: Close a form div upon success...

    I have a form that when you submit it, it sends the data for validation to another php script via ajax. Validation errors are echo'd back in a div in my form. A success message also is returned if validation passes. The problem is that the form is still displayed after submit and successful validation. I want to hid the div after success. So, I wrote this simple CSS method which works fine when called from the page the form is displayed on. The problem is that I cannot seem to call the hide script via returned code. I can return html like echo "<p>Thanks, your form passed validation and is being sent</p>"; So I assumed I could simply echo another line after that echo "window.onload=displayDiv()"; inside script tags (which I cannot get to display here)... and that it would hide the form div. It does not work. I am assuming that the problem is that the javascript is being returned incorrectly and not being interpreted by the browser... How can I invoke my 'hide' script on the page via returned data from my validation script? I can echo back text but the script call is ineffective. Thanks! This is the script on the page with the form...   • Why is AutoCompleteExtender not firing?

    Hi, I have some issue with the ASP AutoCompleteExtender control. I got one in my page that is working fine, but I have put another one in the same page, and I can't get it to work. Using HTTP Analyzer, no query is fired when I type into the textbox associated with it. Has anyone an idea? Both call the same webservice, with a different ContextKey parameter. The webservice cannot be the cause as it works in the first case (DevMgrTxtBox), and is not even called in the second (DevTxtBox). Properties of both controls are similar, I just changed the ID and targetControlID of the second. The code below is in a ContentPlaceHolder. I'm using VS2005 with .NET 2.0. AjaxControlToolkit.dll is in version 1.0.20229.0. EDIT: solution found. The ID is not the only thing that needs to be unique, the BehaviorID property must be unique too.     I'm running an ASP.NET WebService on IIS 6.0 that shows a lot of HTTP 500 (probably just exceptions from the WebService) inside the log at %systemroot%\System32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 on a customers site. Is it possible to log the content of those HTTP responses and there requests without modifying the WebService using IIS or a plug-in for IIS? I thought of using Wireshark or Fiddler to sniff on the HTTP traffic but I would prefer to just turn on an option inside IIS to make him log the communication (this should not be to hard since it is logging the requested URLs anyway)
