  I just set up iPhone tethering from my Snow Leopard Macbook Pro to my iPhone 3GS with the Datapro 4GB plan from AT&T. I can't find anything online about this. I found a single entry for the error message in Google, and it was a swedish (or some other nordic language site) that didn't have an answer to the question. I've tried connecting through both USB and Bluetooth tethering to the iPhone, and they both return the exact same results. I don't have direct control over the firewall, but if changes are necessary to make it work, I may be able to get the powers-that-be to make adjustments. A solution that doesn't require reconfiguring the firewall would be far better of course... Does anyone know what I can do to make this behave? Thanks, Dan

• Disable error_log. Error_log flooding

  Hello, i got an webserver running and old version of gambio (xt:commerce fork). The error_log in the dir over the public_html is flooding with errors. About 30mb in 15min. How can I disable this log? I can't fix all the errors. • Fix overscan in Linux with Intel graphics Vizio HDTV

  I am connecting my server to my HDTV so that I can conveniently display it there. My VIZIO HDTV cuts off all 4 edges. I already realize it is not optimal to be running a GUI on a server; this server will not have much external traffic so I prefer it for convenience. I have already spent countless hours searching for a fix, but all I could find required an ATI or NVIDIA graphics card, or didn’t work. In Windows, the Intel driver has a setting for underscan, though it seems only to be available by a glitch. Here’s my specs: Ubuntu Linux (Quantal 12.10) (Likely to switch to Arch) This is a home server computer, with KDE for managing(for now, at least) Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 from Ivy Bridge Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 CPU: Intel Core i5-3450 My monitors: Dell LCD monitor Vizio VX37L_HDTV10A 37" on HDMI input I have tried all of the following from both HDMI?HDMI and DVI?HDMI cables connected to the ports on my motherboard: Setting properties in xrandr Making sure drivers are all up to date Trying several different modes The TV was “cheap”; max resolution 1080i. I am able to get a 1920x1080 modeline, in both GNU/Linux and Windows, without difficulty. There is no setting in the menu to fix the overscan (I have tried all of them, I realize it’s not always called overscan). I have been in the service menu for the TV, which still does not contain an option to fix it. No aspect ratio settings, etc. The TV has a VGA connector but I am unsure if it would fix it, as I don’t have a VGA cable long enough, and am not sure it would get me the 1920x1080 resolution which I want. Using another resolution does not fix the problem. I tried custom modelines with the dimensions of my screen’s viewable area, but it wouldn’t let me use them. Ubuntu apparently doesn’t automatically generate an xorg.conf file for use. I read somewhere that modifying it may help solve it. I tried X -configure several times(with reboots, etc.) but it consistently gave the following error messages: In log file: … (WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices. I am not opposed to reinstalling my OS, likely will anyways (my preference being Arch).

I've noticed an unusual problem with some of my php programs. Sometimes when visiting a page like profile.edit.php, the browser throws a dialogue box asking to download profile.edit.php page. When I download it, there's nothing in the file. profile.edit.php is supposed to be a web form that edits user information. I've noticed this on some of my other php pages as well. Additonal Details This doesn't happen all the time though. It only happens sometimes. For example, profile.edit.php will load properly.   There is a if statement, which will rewrite url when the client is Android. Everything ok. But, something got strange. Nginx will write post request /login to //login, even if the block of if statement is bank. So I got a 404 page. As the jetty server only accept /login request. • Can't sync filesystem without reboot

  I'm having an issue with a linux server. Once a week the running mysql instance hangs and there is no way to fully stop it. If I kill it, it remains in zombie status and init does not reap its pid. The server is used for staging deployments and some internal tools, so it's not under heavy load. The only process constantly used id mysql and for this I think that it's the only process which suffer of this issue. I've searched system logs for errors and the only thing I found is this error (repeated a couple of times) in dmesg output: [706560.640085] INFO: task mysqld:31965 blocked for more than 120 seconds. [706560.640198] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message. • Severe mysqldump performance degradation using Centos Linux, 8GB PAE and MySQL 5.0.77

When we did this the time of our mysqldump overnight backup jumped from under 10 minutes to over 2 hours. It also caused unresponsiveness on our plone based web site due to database load. The dump is using the optimized mysqldump format and is spooled directly through a socket to another server. Any ideas on what we could do to fix gratefully appreciated. Would a MySQL upgrade help? Anything we can do to MySQL config? Anything we can do to Linux config? Or do we have to add another server or go to 64-bit? We ran a previous (non-virtual) server on 6GB PAE and didn't notice a similar issue. This was on same MySQL version, but Centos 4.4. • Logitech USB headphones detected and selected in Debian Squeeze but sound still coming from speakers

  I have a pair of Logitech wireless USB headphones that work with Ubuntu Natty but aren't working in Debian Squeeze. When they are selected as the default audio output, the sound comes out of the speakers instead of the headphones. I have rebooted and tried using a different USB port. Then I change it to "Output: ALSA Audio output" and a Device menu appears. I select the headphones. When I then save the prefs, the audio switch to the headphones! But here's what's weird: I go back to prefs, change it to "Output: Default" and the headphones keep working. Maybe the ALSA option is actually what is being chosen as the "Default" option, but the Device menu (whose selection is still being used) is still set to the headphones. Anyway, now I need to figure out how to make it work as the default for the whole system.

  My setup: i have 3 nearly identical webserver machines serving the same high loaded dynamic website with simple load balancing over dns. The service has been working for over two ears with the same apache config. apache2, php5, ubuntu 8.04 linux 2.6.24-29-server My problem: since about two weeks i'm experiencing problems with this config. Nearly every day i have one small moment about 5 minutes, in which the website is unreachable. I'm still able to login to the servers over ssh. Open slot with no current process So the most of the processes are just waiting for connection. after about 5 minutes the situation will return to normal: i have lot least processes on every machine, the most workers have the "."-status (meaing they are open to process a request) and of course the website is reachable! so i'm trying to find something in the logs, but there is simply nothing... the apache access log is silent for about 4 minutes, the same is for the error log. i also can not figure out anything wrong in other system logs. the situation is the same on all 3 webservers (all of them have this load peak and unresposibility at the same time), so i do not thing this is hardware related. but i think, this might be related to some network (tcp) issue. any ideas? • OpenVPN on Tomato and Vista - can't see my network

  I followed the instructions here (http://todayguesswhat.blogspot.ca/2011/03/quick-simple-vpn-setup-guide-using.html) to set up a TCP connection to OpenVPN on my Tomato router. Used TCP because the place I usually surf at seems to have the other ports blocked. My Vista laptop is able to connect to the router but I don't appear to be getting an IP address. I'm able to access my router's admin page, but I can't see the network at home. When I browse to Whatsmyip I see my home IP. • MacBook Pro 10.6 losing dns service, network connection still functional if you know the ip address.

  MacBook pro connected to a wireless network (not sure about wired) I lose DNS. I still have a functioning connection and as long as I know the ip address of the website, server... for example skype works, ssh name@ipaddress, .... Things can be working properly and then just quit, Once I was im via skype and lost dns skype continued to work. This has happened in multiple locations on private and public networks. What does not work/fix it: Resetting router changing dns server on computer or router connecting to another network removing the airport interface and adding it back flushing dns The only solution seems to be a restart. A solution to this would be great, but any ideas of this to try would be great. Even a sure way to reproduce this would be useful. Maybe related question: But this is most definitely not true for me. • Inconsistent file downloads of (what should be) the same file

  I'm working on a system that archives large collections of timetstamped images. Part of the system deals with saving an image to a growing .zip file. This morning I noticed that the log system said that an image was successfully downloaded and placed in the zip file, but when I downloaded the .zip (from an apache alias running on our server), the images didn't match the log. For example, although the log said that camera 3484 captured on January 17, 2011, when I download from the apache alias, the downloaded zip file only contains images up to January 14. So, I sshed onto the server, and unzipped the file in its own directory, and that zip file has images from January 14 to today (January 17). What strikes me as odd is that this should be the exact same file as the one I downloaded from the apache alias. Other experiments: I scp-ed the file from the server to my local machine, and the zip file has the newer images. But when I use an SCP client (in this case, Fugu for OSX), I get the zip file for the older images. In short: unzipping a file on the server or after downloading through scp or after downloading through wget gives one zip file, but unzipping a file from Chrome, Firefox, or SCP client gives a different zip file, when they should be exactly the same.
