  I am building a web application for questions and answers. Each question/answer page has all the required metadata for Facebook and Twitter, and we encourage users to share these pages. I have a dilemma regarding the shared link structure: Option 1 - subdomains Use a questions.example.com and answers.example.com, followed by an ID and optional text. The text is ignored by the request, which only takes the id into account. http://questions.example.com/<question_id>/<question_text> http://questions.example.com/12345/how-long-is-the-queue # Example http://q.example.com/12345 # Example Option 2 - URL path This is the format used by stackoverflow.com and trello.com: http://example.com/questions/<question_id>/<question_text> http://example.com/questions12345/how-long-is-the-queue # Example http://example.com/q/12345 # Example Server-wise, I can easily do both - I have a wildcard SSL certificate and Apache/NGinx configuration is pretty straightforward. • Best Way to Handle Meta Information in a SQL Database

  I've got a database where I want to store user information and user_meta information. The reason behind setting it up in this way was because the user_meta side may change over time and I would like to do this without disrupting the master user table. If possible, I would like some advice on how to best set up this meta data table. I can either set it as below: +----+---------+----------+--------------------+ | id | user_id | key | value | +----+---------+----------+--------------------+ | 1 | 1 | email | [email protected] | | 2 | 1 | name | user name | | 3 | 1 | address | test address | ... Or, I can set it as below: +----+---------+--------------------+--------------------+--------------+ | id | user_id | email | name | address | +----+---------+--------------------+--------------------+--------------+ | 1 | 1 | [email protected] | user name | test address | Obviously, the top verison is more flexible, but the bottom version is space saving and perhaps more efficient, returning all the data as a single record. • How should I refactor switch statements like this (Switching on type) to be more OO?

  I'm seeing some code like this in our code base, and want to refactor it: (Typescript psuedocode follows): class EntityManager{ private findEntityForServerObject(entityType:string, serverObject:any):IEntity { var existingEntity:IEntity = null; switch(entityType) { case Types.UserSetting: existingEntity = this.getUserSettingByUserIdAndSettingName(serverObject.user_id, serverObject.setting_name); break; case Types.Bar: existingEntity = this.getBarByUserIdAndId(serverObject.user_id, serverObject.id); break; //Lots more case statements here... } return existingEntity; } } The downsides of switching on type are self-explanatory. Normally, when switching behavior based on type, I try to push the behavior into subclasses so that I can reduce this to a single method call, and let polymorphism take care of the rest. However, the following two things are giving me pause: 1) I don't want to couple the serverObject with the class that is storing all of these objects. It doesn't know where to look for entities of a certain type. And unfortunately, the identity of a type of ServerObject varies with the type of ServerObject. (So sometimes it's just an ID, other times it's a combination of an id and a uniquely identifying string, etc). And this behavior doesn't belong down there on those subclasses. It is the responsibility of the EntityManager and its delegates. 2) In this case, I can't modify the ServerObject classes since they're plain old data objects. It should be mentioned that I've got other instances of the above method that take a parameter like "IEntity" and proceed to do almost the same thing (but slightly modify the name of the methods they're calling to get the identity of the entity). So, we might have: case Types.Bar: existingEntity = this.getBarByUserIdAndId(entity.getUserId(), entity.getId()); break; So in that case, I can change the entity interface and subclasses, but this isn't behavior that belongs in that class. So, I think that points me to some sort of map. So eventually I will call: private findEntityForServerObject(entityType:string, serverObject:any):IEntity { return aMapOfSomeSort[entityType].findByServerObject(serverObject); } private findEntityForEntity(someEntity:IEntity):IEntity { return aMapOfSomeSort[someEntity.entityType].findByEntity(someEntity); } Which means I need to register some sort of strategy classes/functions at runtime with this map. And again, I darn well better remember to register one for each my my types, or I'll get a runtime exception. Is there a better way to refactor this? I feel like I'm missing something really obvious here.

  I have a database table that contains id, filename, userId id is unique identifier filename should also be unique table may contain 10000 records When a user uploads a file it should be entered in database with given rules: If there is no record with same filename, it should be added as it is (Ex. foobar.pdf) If there is record with same filename, it should be added as uploadedName(2).ext (foobar(2).pdf) If there are n records with same base filename (foobar), it should be added as uploadedName(n+1).ext (foobar(20).pdf) Now if foobar(2).pdf is uploaded, it should be added as foobar(2)(2).pdf & so on This pattern needs to be followed because the file is already being uploaded at client side using ajax before sending the details to server and the file hosting service follows the above rules to name the files. My solution: maintain a file that contains all the names and the number of times it has occurred. if a filename that exists in file is entered, increase occurrence count and new name is generated, else add to it to file if the new name generated is in database, add it to file and generate new name

• W3WP crashes when initializing a collection

  I've created an ASP.NET MVC application that has an initializer attached to the PreApplicationStartMethodAttribute. When initializing, a collection is instantiated that implements an interface I've defined. If I leave the instantiation, w3wp crashes. If I modify the interface, w3wp still crashes. I've tried every variation I could come up with on the theme of keeping the instantiation but doing everything else differently, but w3wp still crashes. My biggest issue here is that I have absolutely no idea why w3wp is crashing. It's not a StackOverflowException or anything concrete like that, all I get is the unintelligent junk cited above. I've tried to use DebugDiag and IISState to debug the w3wp process, but DebugDiag is only available for post-dump analysis in x64 (I'm running on Windows 7 x64, so the w3wp process is thus 64 bit) and IISStat says the following when I try to run it: D:\Programs\iisstate>IISState.exe -p 9204 -d Symbol search path is: SRV*D:\Programs\iisstate\symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols IISState is limited to processes associated with IIS. If you require a generic debugger, please use WinDBG or CDB. They are available for download from http://www.microsoft.com/ddk/debugging. This error may also occur if a debugger is already attached to the process being checked. Incorrect Process Attachment I've double-checked 10 times that the process ID of my w3wp process is correct. I'm suspecting that IISState too only can debug x86 processes. Setting a breakpoint anywhere in the application does absolutely nothing. The break point isn't hit and w3wp crashes as soon as the request comes through to IIS from the browser. Starting the application with F5 in Visual Studio 2010 or starting another application to get the w3wp process up and running and then attaching the VS2010 debugger to it and then visiting the faulting application doesn't help. I've also tried to add an HTTP module as described in KB-911816 as well as add this to my web.config file: <configuration> <runtime> <legacyUnhandledExceptionPolicy enabled="true" /> </runtime> </configuration> Needless to say, it makes absolutely no difference. So I'm left with no way to debug the w3wp process, no way to extract any information from it and complete garbage dumped in my event log. If anybody has any idea on how to debug this problem, please let me know! Update My collection was initialized based on RouteTable.Routes which might have thrown an exception (perhaps by not being initialized itself yet in such an early stage of the ASP.NET lifecycle). Postponing the communication with RouteTable.Routes until a later stage solved the problem. While I don't really need an answer to this question anymore, I still find it so obscure that I'll leave it for anyone to comment on and answer, because I found no existing posts on this problem anywhere, so it might be of good reference in the future.

• Zoom on multiple areas in d3.js

  I'm planning to have a geoJSON map inside my svg alongside other svg elements. I would like to be able to zoom (zoom+pan) in the map and keep the map in the same location with a bounding box. I can accomplish this by using a clipPath to keep the map within a rectangular area. The problem is that I also want to enable zooming and panning on my entire svg. If I do d3.select("svg").call(myzoom); this overrides any zoom I applied to my map. How can I apply zoom to both my entire svg and to my map?   I'm playing around with writing a jQuery plugin that uses an attribute to define form validation behavior (yes, I'm aware there's already a validation plugin; this is as much a learning exercise as something I'll be using). I'm fairly sure this will require a combination of both DTD and XML Schema, but I'm not really quite sure how exactly to execute. So far so good. I come across a problem, however, when trying to deal with associations. It seems if I have an existing Company, and create a Person, and associate to the Person to the Company and persist the company, the association is not saved when the Person is inserted. For example, my main code looks like this: EntityManager em = emf.createEntityManager(); em.getTransaction().begin(); CompanyPK companyPK = new CompanyPK(); companyPK.owner="USA"; companyPK.comp_id="1102F3"; Company company = em.find(Company.class, companyPK); Person person = new Person(); person.setOwner("USA"); person.setPersonid("5116628123"); //some number that doesn't exist yet person.setP_fname("Hannah"); person.setP_sname("Montana"); person.setCompany(company); em.persist(person); This completes without error; however in the database I find that the Person record was inserted with a null in the COMP_ID field. With EclipseLink debug logging set to FINE, the SQL query is shown as: INSERT INTO PERSON (PERSONID,OWNER,P_SNAME,P_FNAME) VALUES (?,?,?,?) bind = [5116628123,USA,Montana,Hannah,] I would have expected this to be saved, and the query to be equivalent to INSERT INTO PERSON (PERSONID,OWNER,COMP_ID,P_SNAME,P_FNAME) VALUES (?,?,?,?,?) bind = [5116628123,USA,1102F3,Montana,Hannah,] What gives? Is it incorrect to say updatable/insertable=true for one half of a composite key and =false for the other half? If I have updatable/insertable=true for both parts of the foreign key, then Eclipselink fails to startup saying that I can not use the column twice without having one set to readonly by specifying these options.

• ASP.NET Send Image Attachment With Email Without Saving To Filesystem

  I'm trying to create a form that will send an email with an attached image and am running into some problems. The form I am creating is rather large so I have created a small test form for the purpose of this question. The email will send and the attachment will exist on the email, but the image is corrupt or something as it is not viewable. Also.. I do not want to save the image to the filesystem. You may think it is convoluted to take the image file from the fileupload to a stream, but this is due to the fact that the real form I am working on will allow multiple files to be added through a single fileupload and will be saved in session, thus the images will not be coming from the fileupload control directly on submit. • A little bit of Ajax goes a long way

  ..except when you're having problems. My problem is this: I have a hierarchical list of categories stored in a database which I wish to output in a dropdown list. The hierarchy comes into place when the subcategories are to be displayed, which are dependent on a parent id (which equals out to the first seven or so main categories listed). My thoughts are relatively simple: when the user clicks the dynamically allocated list of main categories, they are clicking on an option tag. For each option tag, an id (i.e., the parent) is listed in the value attribute, as well as an argument which is sent to a Javascript function which then uses AJAX to get the data via PHP and sends it to my 'javascript.php' file. The file then does magic, and populates the subcategory list, which is dependent on the main category selected. I believe I have the idea down, it's just that I'm implementing the solution improperly, for some reason. I also receive an "undefined index" error (which refers to the key I set for the data type). I'm thinking that for some reason, the data is being sent to my form.php file, or my default.php file which includes both the form.php and javascript.php files via a function. Is there something specific that I'm missing here? Just looking up basic AJAX syntax (via jQuery) hasn't helped out, unfortunately.
