• How to organize a ASP.NET MVC solution (DDD)

- by vandalo
Hello everyone. I am trying to start a new project (asp.net MVC) and I would like to apply some DDD rules I've learned in these last few months. I don't know how to organize my solution though. I would like to use Nhibernate but I don't want to use Fluent Nhibernate cause it must be something like an experiment. I've seen some examples where people keep everything in the same project. Some others tend to create a different project for everything. Do you think I should differentiate the model and the repository or put it in the same project? If someone has some links to articles etc it would be appreciated. thanks Alberto

• NotSupportedException on IQuery's Enumerable when using statelesssession

- by user57555
when trying to use the Enumerable method on a named query, with a Stateless session, as shown in the example at: http://www.nhforge.org/doc/nh/en/#batch-statelesssession i am seeing a NotSupportedException. the stack trace is as below: System.NotSupportedException: Specified method is not supported. at NHibernate.Impl.StatelessSessionImpl.Enumerable(String query, QueryParameters parameters) at NHibernate.Impl.QueryImpl.Enumerable() here is a snippet of my code: IStatelessSession statelessSession = sessionFactory.OpenStatelessSession(); var fileLines = statelessSession.GetNamedQuery("GetLinesByFileId") .SetInt32("FileIdInput", fileId).Enumerable<FileLineEntity>(); the named query, GetLinesByFileId is defined in the hbm as below: <query name="GetLinesByFileId" cacheable="false" read-only="true"> from FileLineEntity lineItem where lineItem.FileId=:FileIdInput </query> any suggestions on what i maybe missing here?

• Problems using FluentNHibernate + SQLite with .NET4?

- by stiank81
I have a WPF application running with VS2010 .Net3.5 using Nhibernate with FluentNHibernate + SQLite, and all works fine. Now I want to change to use .Net4, but this has turned into a more painful experience then I expected.. When setting up the connection a FluentConfigurationException is thrown from FluentConfiguration.BuildConfiguration saying: An invalid or incomplete configuration was used while creating a SessionFactory. Check PotentialReasons collection, and InnerException for more details. The inner exception gives us more information: Could not create the driver from NHibernate.Driver.SQLite20Driver, NHibernate, Version=2.1.2.4000, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=aa95f207798dfdb4. It has an InnerException again: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. Which again has an InnerException: The IDbCommand and IDbConnection implementation in the assembly System.Data.SQLite could not be found. Ensure that the assembly System.Data.SQLite is located in the application directory or in the Global Assembly Cache. If the assembly is in the GAC, use element in the application configuration file to specify the full name of the assembly. Now - to me it sounds like it doesn't find System.Data.SQLite.dll, but I can't understand this. Everywhere this is referenced I have "Copy Local", and I have verified that it is in every build folder for projects using SQLite. I have also copied it manually to every Debug folder of the solution - without luck. Notes: This is exactly the same code that worked just fine before I upgraded to .Net4. I did see some x64 x86 mismatch problems earlier, but I have switched to use x86 as the target platform and for all referenced dlls. I have verified that all files in the Debug-folder are x86. I have tried the precompiled Fluent dlls, I have tried compiling myself, and I have compiled my own version of Fluent using .Net4. I see that there are also others that have seen this problem, but I haven't really seen any solution yet. After @devio's answer I tried adding a reference to the SQLite dll. This didn't change anything, but I hope I made it right though.. This is what I added to the root node of the app.config file: <runtime> <assemblyBinding xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1"> <qualifyAssembly partialName="System.Data.SQLite" fullName="System.Data.SQLite, Version=1.0.60.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=db937bc2d44ff139" /> </assemblyBinding> </runtime> Anyone out there using Fluent with .Net4 and SQLite successfully? Help! I'm lost...

• Spring.NET. How actively is it being developed/supported?

- by Bubba88
I've made my choice for the developement components on the .NET platform: Spring.NET for IoC and NHibernate for data access. But how safe is it? I've heard here on SO (don't remember which post exactly) that Spring.NET is on its way down, cause for example the Java original version is developed by a large number of people; but (they say that) the sole person behind the .NET version is Mr. Mark Pollack. Is that so? And, if so, does it still make sense to count on Spring.NET for my production applications? if you have similar information about NHibernate, I'll appreciate it; though it seems that the latter is actively supported.

• Where should Nhibernate IPostInsertEventListener go in the 3 tier architecture

- by Quintin Par
I have a IPostInsertEventListener implementation like public class NHibernateEventListener : IPostInsertEventListener, IPostUpdateEventListener which catches some entity inserts and does an additional insert to another table for ETL. Essentially it requires references to the Nhibernate, Domain entity and Repository<> Now where do I go about adding this class? If I add it to ApplicationServices I’ll end up referencing Nhibernate at that layer. If I add this to the Data layer, I’ll have to reference Domain (circular). How do I go implementing this class with S#arp principles? Any thoughts?

• Access one database from multiple ORMs :: Caching issue

- by kaptan
I know this is not a good idea and the best would be to let the applications talk Web Services. But I have a situation where the legacy application is accessing a database with an ORM and I need to access the same database from the new .net application using Fluent nHibernate. So the question is what problems this will make and how to solve them? I guess the main issue is the caching. I need to disable the caching on one of the applications (which would be the new app). So how can I disable caching in nHibernate? Is there anything else that should be careful about?

• Select columns from join table only without requiring a join

- by Kent Boogaart
Given these tables: create table Orders ( Id INT IDENTITY NOT NULL, primary key (Id) ) create table Items ( Id INT IDENTITY NOT NULL, primary key (Id) ) create table OrdersItems ( OrderId INT not null, ItemId INT not null, primary key (OrderId, ItemId) ) Is it possible to use HQL/criteria API to contruct a query that results in the following SQL: SELECT [OrderId], [ItemId] FROM [OrdersItems] I've tried both of these approaches: var hqlResults = session .CreateQuery("select order.id, item.id from Order order inner join order.Items item") .List(); var criteriaResults = session .CreateCriteria<Order>() .CreateAlias("Items", "item", NHibernate.SqlCommand.JoinType.None) .SetProjection(Projections.Property("id"), Projections.Property("item.id")) .List(); But both approaches insist on generating a join (or fail because the join isn't present, in using criteria), resulting in SQL such as: select order.Id, item.Id from Orders order inner join OrdersItems ordersItems on order.Id = ordersItems.ArticleId inner join Items item on ordersItems.CategoryId = item.Id Is there any way to have NHibernate generate a query that selects columns only from the join table, without requiring a join?

• Getting error "Association references unmapped class" when using interfaces in model

- by Bjarke
I'm trying to use the automap functionality in fluent to generate a DDL for the following model and program, but somehow I keep getting the error "Association references unmapped class: IRole" when I call the GenerateSchemaCreationScript method in NHibernate. When I replace the type of the ILists with the implementation of the interfaces (User and Role) everything works fine. What am I doing wrong here? How can I make fluent use the implemented versions of IUser and IRole as defined in Unity? public interface IRole { string Title { get; set; } IList<IUser> Users { get; set; } } public interface IUser { string Email { get; set; } IList<IRole> Roles { get; set; } } public class Role : IRole { public virtual string Title { get; set; } public virtual IList<IUser> Users { get; set; } } public class User : IUser { public virtual string Email { get; set; } public virtual IList<IRole> Roles { get; set; } } I use the following program to generate the DDL using the GenerateSchemaCreationScript in NHibernate: class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var ddl = new NHibernateSessionManager(); ddl.BuildConfiguration(); } } public class NHibernateSessionManager { private ISessionFactory _sessionFactory; private static IUnityContainer _container; private static void InitContainer() { _container = new UnityContainer(); _container.RegisterType(typeof(IUser), typeof(User)); _container.RegisterType(typeof(IRole), typeof(Role)); } public ISessionFactory BuildConfiguration() { InitContainer(); return Fluently.Configure().Database(MsSqlConfiguration.MsSql2008 .ConnectionString("ConnectionString")) .Mappings(m => m.AutoMappings.Add( AutoMap.AssemblyOf<IUser>())) .ExposeConfiguration(BuildSchema) .BuildSessionFactory(); } private void BuildSchema(Configuration cfg) { var ddl = cfg.GenerateSchemaCreationScript(new NHibernate.Dialect.MsSql2008Dialect()); System.IO.File.WriteAllLines("Filename", ddl); } }

I have a interface as: public interface ISessionBuilder { ISession Current{get;}; void Close(); } public class SessionBuilder : ISessionBuilder { static SessionBuilder() { Initialize(); } public ISession Current{ get; private set; } public void Close() { //aqui eu fecho a session } private static void Initialize() { //aqui eu configuro o NHibernate } } I want to be able of set SessionBuilder in the site asp.net and inject this implementation in my wcf Service where I have my repositories which will consume SessionBuilder to query my database. Anyone have some sugestion?

• Making OR/M loosely coupled and abstracted away from other layers.

- by Genuine
Hi all. In an n-tier architecture, the best place to put an object-relational mapping (OR/M) code is in the data access layer. For example, database queries and updates can be delegated to a tool like NHibernate. Yet, I'd like to keep all references to NHibernate within the data access layer and abstract dependencies away from the layers below or above it. That way, I can swap or plug in another OR/M tool (e.g. Entity Framework) or some approach (e.g. plain vanilla stored procedure calls, mock objects) without causing compile-time errors or a major overhaul of the entire application. Testability is an added bonus. Could someone please suggest a wrapper (i.e. an interface or base class) or approach that would keep OR/M loosely coupled and contained in 1 layer? Or point me to resources that would help? Thanks.

I am trying to separate the implementation of the DAL. I am learning NHibernate. Regards, Karan

• How can this be done with (N)Hibernate?

- by Vilx-
I'm creating a windows forms application with NHibernate. It's an MDI application, so there is no limit to how many forms the user can have open at the same time (probably many). For most forms I want to have an "OK" and a "Cancel" button. Both close the form, but "OK" also saves the modified data to the DB. The forms can be pretty complex, and the modifications are likely to touch a whole graph of objects, adding some, deleting some, and changing some more. It would be good if the changes could be automatically detected and persisted as needed, without the need to manually keep track of each of them. What would be a good way to do this? Extra information: I can make whatever DB schema I want. I'm using MSSQL 2008 and currently have decided for GUID primary keys (with guid.comb generator) and a TIMESTAMP column for optimistic concurrency. I tried to simply set FlushMode of a NHibernate ISession to Never, doing all modifications as needed, and then calling Flush() if the user clicked OK. But that didn't work.

• Offline Database Write Cache in C#

- by Todd Gardner
I have a windows service that receives a large amount of data that needs to be transformed and persisted to a database. To ensure that we do not lose data, I want to create a "Write cache" for the data that will continue regardless if the database is online. Once the database becomes available again, I would want it to flush the content of the cache back into the database. I've seen some articles indicating that I might be able to do this with NHibernate, but I haven't found it conclusively. What options exist for this, and is NHibernate the appropriate direction?

• C# WCF Server retrieves 'List<T>' with 1 entry, but client doesn't receive it?! Please help Urgentl

- by Neville
Hi Everyone, I've been battling and trying to research this issue for over 2 days now with absolutely no luck. I am trying to retrieve a list of clients from the server (server using fluentNHibernate). The client object is as follow: [DataContract] //[KnownType(typeof(System.Collections.Generic.List<ContactPerson>))] //[KnownType(typeof(System.Collections.Generic.List
))] //[KnownType(typeof(System.Collections.Generic.List<BatchRequest>))] //[KnownType(typeof(System.Collections.Generic.List<Discount>))] [KnownType(typeof(EClientType))] [KnownType(typeof(EComType))] public class Client { #region Properties [DataMember] public virtual int ClientID { get; set; } [DataMember] public virtual EClientType ClientType { get; set; } [DataMember] public virtual string RegisterID {get; set;} [DataMember] public virtual string HerdCode { get; set; } [DataMember] public virtual string CompanyName { get; set; } [DataMember] public virtual bool InvoicePerBatch { get; set; } [DataMember] public virtual EComType ResultsComType { get; set; } [DataMember] public virtual EComType InvoiceComType { get; set; } //[DataMember] //public virtual IList<ContactPerson> Contacts { get; set; } //[DataMember] //public virtual IList
Addresses { get; set; } //[DataMember] //public virtual IList<BatchRequest> Batches { get; set; } //[DataMember] //public virtual IList<Discount> Discounts { get; set; } #endregion #region Overrides public override bool Equals(object obj) { var other = obj as Client; if (other == null) return false; return other.GetHashCode() == this.GetHashCode(); } public override int GetHashCode() { return ClientID.GetHashCode() | ClientType.GetHashCode() | RegisterID.GetHashCode() | HerdCode.GetHashCode() | CompanyName.GetHashCode() | InvoicePerBatch.GetHashCode() | ResultsComType.GetHashCode() | InvoiceComType.GetHashCode();// | Contacts.GetHashCode() | //Addresses.GetHashCode() | Batches.GetHashCode() | Discounts.GetHashCode(); } #endregion } As you can see, I have allready tried to remove the sub-lists, though even with this simplified version of the client I still run into the propblem. my fluent mapping is: public class ClientMap : ClassMap<Client> { public ClientMap() { Table("Clients"); Id(p => p.ClientID); Map(p => p.ClientType).CustomType<EClientType>(); ; Map(p => p.RegisterID); Map(p => p.HerdCode); Map(p => p.CompanyName); Map(p => p.InvoicePerBatch); Map(p => p.ResultsComType).CustomType<EComType>(); Map(p => p.InvoiceComType).CustomType<EComType>(); //HasMany<ContactPerson>(p => p.Contacts) // .KeyColumns.Add("ContactPersonID") // .Inverse() // .Cascade.All(); //HasMany
(p => p.Addresses) // .KeyColumns.Add("AddressID") // .Inverse() // .Cascade.All(); //HasMany<BatchRequest>(p => p.Batches) // .KeyColumns.Add("BatchID") // .Inverse() // .Cascade.All(); //HasMany<Discount>(p => p.Discounts) // .KeyColumns.Add("DiscountID") // .Inverse() // .Cascade.All(); } The client method, seen below, connects to the server. The server retrieves the list, and everything looks right in the object, still, when it returns, the client doesn't receive anything (it receive a List object, but with nothing in it. Herewith the calling method: public List<s.Client> GetClientList() { try { s.DataServiceClient svcClient = new s.DataServiceClient(); svcClient.Open(); List<s.Client> clients = new List<s.Client>(); clients = svcClient.GetClientList().ToList<s.Client>(); svcClient.Close(); //when receiving focus from server, the clients object has a count of 0 return clients; } catch (Exception e) { MessageBox.Show(e.Message); } return null; } and the server method: public IList<Client> GetClientList() { var clients = new List<Client>(); try { using (var session = SessionHelper.OpenSession()) { clients = session.Linq<Client>().Where(p => p.ClientID > 0).ToList<Client>(); } } catch (Exception e) { EventLog.WriteEntry("eCOWS.Data", e.Message); } return clients; //returns a list with 1 client in it } the server method interface is: [UseNetDataContractSerializer] [OperationContract] IList<Client> GetClientList(); for final references, here is my client app.config entries: <system.serviceModel> <bindings> <netTcpBinding> <binding name="NetTcpBinding_IDataService" listenBacklog="10" maxConnections="10" transferMode="Buffered" transactionProtocol="OleTransactions" maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647" maxBufferSize="2147483647" receiveTimeout="00:10:00" sendTimeout="00:10:00"> <readerQuotas maxDepth="51200000" maxStringContentLength="51200000" maxArrayLength="51200000" maxBytesPerRead="51200000" maxNameTableCharCount="51200000" /> <security mode="Transport"/> </binding> </netTcpBinding> </bindings> <client> <endpoint address="net.tcp://localhost:9000/eCOWS/DataService" binding="netTcpBinding" bindingConfiguration="NetTcpBinding_IDataService" contract="eCowsDataService.IDataService" name="NetTcpBinding_IDataService" behaviorConfiguration="eCowsEndpointBehavior"> </endpoint> <endpoint address="MEX" binding="mexHttpBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange" /> </client> <behaviors> <endpointBehaviors> <behavior name="eCowsEndpointBehavior"> <dataContractSerializer maxItemsInObjectGraph="2147483647"/> </behavior> </endpointBehaviors> </behaviors> </system.serviceModel> and my server app.config: <system.serviceModel> <bindings> <netTcpBinding> <binding name="netTcpBinding" maxConnections="10" listenBacklog="10" transferMode="Buffered" transactionProtocol="OleTransactions" maxBufferSize="2147483647" maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647" sendTimeout="00:10:00" receiveTimeout="00:10:00"> <readerQuotas maxDepth="51200000" maxStringContentLength="51200000" maxArrayLength="51200000" maxBytesPerRead="51200000" maxNameTableCharCount="51200000" /> <security mode="Transport"/> </binding> </netTcpBinding> </bindings> <services> <service name="eCows.Data.Services.DataService" behaviorConfiguration="eCowsServiceBehavior"> <host> <baseAddresses> <add baseAddress="http://localhost:9001/eCOWS/" /> <add baseAddress="net.tcp://localhost:9000/eCOWS/" /> </baseAddresses> </host> <endpoint address="DataService" binding="netTcpBinding" contract="eCows.Data.Services.IDataService" behaviorConfiguration="eCowsEndpointBehaviour"> </endpoint> <endpoint address="MEX" binding="mexHttpBinding" contract="IMetadataExchange" /> </service> </services> <behaviors> <endpointBehaviors> <behavior name="eCowsEndpointBehaviour"> <dataContractSerializer maxItemsInObjectGraph="2147483647" /> </behavior> </endpointBehaviors> <serviceBehaviors> <behavior name="eCowsServiceBehavior"> <serviceMetadata httpGetEnabled="True"/> <serviceThrottling maxConcurrentCalls="10" maxConcurrentSessions="10"/> <serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="False" /> </behavior> <behavior name="MexBehaviour"> <serviceMetadata /> </behavior> </serviceBehaviors> </behaviors> </system.serviceModel> I use to run into "socket closed / network or timeout" errors, and the trace showed clearly that on the callback it was looking for a listening endpoint, but couldn't find one. Anyway, after adding the UseNetSerializer that error went away, yet now I'm just not getting anything. Oh PS. if I add all the commented out List items, I still retrieve an entry from the DB, but also still not receive anything on the client. if I remove the [UseNetDataContractSerializer] I get the following error(s) in the svclog : WARNING: Description Faulted System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServerSessionPreambleConnectionReader+ServerFramingDuplexSessionChannel WARNING: Description Faulted System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServiceChannel ERROR: Initializing[eCows.Data.Models.Client#3]-failed to lazily initialize a collection of role: eCows.Data.Models.Client.Addresses, no session or session was closed ... ERROR: Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'ILogbookManager' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element. If I add a .Not.LazyLoad to the List mapping items, I'm back at not receiving errors, but also not receiving any client information.. Sigh! Please, if anyone can help with this I'd be extremely grateful. I'm probably just missing something small.. but... what is it :) hehe. Thanks in advance! Neville

• Lazy loading is not working for one to many

- by Shire
Any 1-M that use the primary key of the parent table, but any 1-M that uses a different column does not work. It generates the SQL correctly, but put the value of the key into the SQL instead of the column value I want. Example mapping: public TemplateMap() { Table("IMPORT"); LazyLoad(); Id(x => x.ImportId).Column("IMPORT_ID").GeneratedBy.Assigned(); Map(x => x.ImportSetId).Column("IMPORTSET_ID"); HasMany(x => x.GoodChildren) .Access.CamelCaseField() .KeyColumns.Add("IMPORT_ID") .Cascade.Delete() .Inverse(); HasMany(x => x.BadChildren) .Access.CamelCaseField() .KeyColumns.Add("IMPORTSET_ID") .Cascade.Delete() .Inverse(); } Lazy loading works for GoodChildren, but not for BadChildren. The SQL statement is correct for both children. But the wrong values are use. If the value of IMPORT_ID is 10 and the value of IMPORTSET_ID is 12. The value 10 will be used for the IMPORTSET_ID in the SQL for BadChildren instead of 12. Anyone have any ideas what I need to change to get BadChildren to work correctly? Note: GoodChildren links to IMPORT_ID on Template BadChildren links to IMPORTSET_ID on Template

I've even tried to call InnerItems before the session is closed by myself. It successfully retrieves, but after disposing of the session it becomes not initialized.

• Exception "The operation is not valid for the state of the transaction" using TransactionScope

- by Lanfear
We have a web service on server #1 and a database on server #2. Web service uses transaction scope to produce distributed transaction. Everything is correct. And we have another database on server #3. We had some problems with this server and we reinstalled operation system and software. We configured MSDTC and tried to use web service from server #1 to communicate with database on this server. And now after first select statement within transaction scope we get: "The operation is not valid for the state of the transaction". This exception falls in every web service request if it is using transaction scope. Server #2 and Server #3 is almost similar. The difference can be only in settings. .NET framework 3.5 SP1 installed and SQL Server SP3 on all servers. • Why is my Lucene index getting locked?

- by Andrew Bullock
I had an issue with my search not return the results I expect. I tried to run Luke on my index, but it said it was locked and I needed to Force Unlock it (I'm not a Jedi/Sith though) I tried to delete the index folder and run my recreate-indicies application but the folder was locked. Using unlocker I've found that there are about 100 entries of w3wp.exe (same PID, different Handle) with a lock on the index. Whats going on? I'm doing this in my NHibernate configuration: c.SetListener(ListenerType.PostUpdate, new FullTextIndexEventListener()); c.SetListener(ListenerType.PostInsert, new FullTextIndexEventListener()); c.SetListener(ListenerType.PostDelete, new FullTextIndexEventListener()); And here is the only place i query the index: var fullTextSession = NHibernate.Search.Search.CreateFullTextSession(this.unitOfWork.Session); var fullTextQuery = fullTextSession.CreateFullTextQuery(query, typeof (Person)); fullTextQuery.SetMaxResults(100); return fullTextQuery.List<Person>(); Whats going on? What am i doing wrong? Thanks

• Modelling Business Logic with NON-Techies

- by cbmeeks
The setup: Winform/ASP.NET MVC projects. Learning NHibernate SQL-Server driven apps I work with clients that have no idea how to model an application. That's what I'm for. However, we have lots of conflicts with validation, mis-understandings, etc. For example, the client will ask for an order entry screen. The screen should require a "product". That's fine and dandy. However, the client didn't know to tell me that the user can't order a product of "Class A" unless it's Tuesday. Or, they need a time entry screen. 2 days before it's rolled into production, they casually forgot to mention that certain activities are only valid for certain situations. These situations being a week of coding. That's of course, some crude examples (not by much!). But the problem is getting these non-technical clients to layout their business logic. They somehow didn't realize that the "Class A" problem would come up two weeks later, etc. I'm all for agile programming but is there an easy way to somehow make business logic like this extremely easy to implement and change on almost a daily basis? I of course am splitting the project into hopefully intelligent pieces, using NHibernate, etc. But making this BI logic so dynamic is really making it hard to project timelines, etc. Any suggestions? I know there will never be a perfect client (or a perfect provider) but how do you guys deal with the constant mis-understandings? Thanks.

• Can FluentNHibernate be used with .Net4?

- by stiank81
I have a WPF application running with .Net3.5 using FluentNHibernate, and all works fine. When I upgraded to VS2010 I ran into some odd problems, but after changing to use x64 variant of SQLite it worked fine again. Now I want to change to use .Net4, but this has turned into a more painful experience then I expected.. First I met a problem which required that I set a [SecurityCritical] attribute. Fine - I fixed this. But the reason this was exposed was because an exception was thrown in the first place. And the exception thrown was the following - when calling FluentConfiguration.BuildConfiguration: FluentConfigurationException unhandled An invalid or incomplete configuration was used while creating a SessionFactory. Check PotentialReasons collection, and InnerException for more detail The inner exception gives us more information: Message = "Could not create the driver from NHibernate.Driver.SQLite20Driver, NHibernate, Version=2.1.2.4000, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=aa95f207798dfdb4." This is what I saw in my own project when moving to VS2010. I have tried changing Fluent to use the x64 variant of SQLite, but this doesn't change anything. Does it sound like it might be related to mixing of 32bit and 64bit assemblies? I see that there are also others that have seen this problem, but I haven't really seen any solution yet. Anyone out there using Fluent with .Net4 and SQLite - on a 64bit machine - successfully? Help! I'm lost...

Help! I'm lost...

• Generate an ID via COM interop

- by Erik van Brakel
At the moment, we've got an unmaintanable ball of code which offers an interface to a third party application. The third party application has a COM assembly which MUST be used to create new entries. This process involves two steps: generate a new object (basically an ID), and update that object with new field values. Because COM interop is so slow, we only use that to generate the ID (and related objects) in the database. The actual update is done using a regular SQL query. What I am trying to figure out if it's possible to use NHibernate to do some of the heavy lifting for us, without bypassing the COM assembly. Here's the code for saving something to the database as I envision it: using(var s = sessionFactory.OpenSession()) using(var t = s.BeginTransaction()) { MyEntity entity = new MyEntity(); s.Save(entity); t.Commit(); } Regular NH code I'd say. Now, this is where it gets tricky. I think I have to supply my own implementation of NHibernate.Id.IIdentifierGenerator which calls the COM assembly in the Generate method. That's not a problem. What IS a problem is that the COM assembly requires initialisation, which does take a bit of time. It also doesn't like multiple instances in the same process, for some reason. What I would like to know is if there's a way to properly access an external service in the generator code. I'm free to use any technique I want, so if it involves something like an IoC container that's no problem. The thing I am looking for is where exactly to hook-up my code so I can access the things I need in my generator, without having to resort to using singletons or other nasty stuff.

• How to configure database connection securely

- by chiccodoro
Similar but not the same: How to securely store database connection details Securely connecting to database within a application Hi all, I have a C# WinForms application connecting to a database server. The database connection string, including a generic user/pass, is placed in a NHibernate configuration file, which lies in the same directory as the exe file. Now I have this issue: The user that runs the application should not get to know the username/password of the general database user because I don't want him to rummage around in the database directly. Alternatively I could hardcode the connection string, which is bad because the administrator must be able to change it if the database is moved or if he wants to switch between dev/test/prod environments. So long I've found three possibilities: The first referenced question was generally answered by making the file only readable for the user that runs the application. But that's not not enough in my case (the user running the application is a person. The database user/pass are general and shouldn't even be accessible by the person.) The first answer additionally proposed to encrypt the connection data before writing it to the file. With this approach, the administrator is not able anymore to configure the connection string because he cannot encrypt it by hand. The second referenced question provides an approach for this very scenario but it seems very complicated. My questions to you: This is a very general issue, so isn't there any general "how-to-do-it" way, somehow a "design pattern"? Is there some support in .NET's config infrastructure? (optional, maybe out of scope) Can I combine that easily with the NHibernate configuration mechanism?
