  • How do I correctly use generics?

    - by ninjasense
    I basically am making webrequests and recieving a JSON response. Depending on the request, I am parsing JSON request into objects I have created. The parsing is pretty much the same no matter what the object Im parsing into looks like. So I have a bunch of methods doing the same work only with different objects, I was wondering how I could accomplish this with generics? Here is an example public static ArrayList<Contact> parseContacts(String responseData) { ArrayList<Contact> Contacts = new ArrayList<Contact>(); try { JSONArray jsonContacts = new JSONArray(responseData); if (!jsonContacts.isNull(0)) { for (int i = 0; i < jsonContacts.length(); i++) { Contacts.add(new Contact(jsonContacts.getJSONObject(i))); } } } catch (JSONException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } catch (Exception e) { } return Contacts; }

  • Is this bad style of programming(C#) ?

    - by m0s
    Hi, so in my program I have parts where I use try catch blocks like this try { DirectoryInfo dirInfo = new DirectoryInfo(someString); //I don't know if that directory exists //I don't know if that string is valid path string... it could be anything //Some operations here } catch(Exception iDontCareWhyItFailed) { //Didn't work? great... we will say: somethings wrong, try again/next one } Of course I probably could do checks to see if the string is valid path (regex), then I would check if directory exists, then I could catch various exceptions to see why my routine failed and give more info... But in my program it's not really necessary. Now I just really need to know if this is acceptable, and what would a pro say/think about that. Thanks a lot for attention.

  • connecting clients to server with emulator on different computers

    - by prolink007
    I am writing an application that communicates using sockets. I have a server running on one android emulator on a computer, then i have 2 other clients running on android emulators on 2 other computers. I am trying to get the 2 clients to connect to the server. This works when i run the server and clients on the same computer, but when i attempt to do this on the same wifi network and on separate computers it gives me the following error. The client and server code is posted below. A lot is stripped out just to show the important stuff. Also, after the server starts i telnet into the server and run these commands redir add tcp:5000:6000 (i have also tried without doing the redir but it still says the same thing). Then i start the clients and get the error. Thanks for the help! Both the 5000 port and 6000 port are open on my router. And i have windows firewall disabled on the computer hosting the server. 11-27 18:54:02.274: W/ActivityManager(60): Activity idle timeout for HistoryRecord{44cf0a30 school.cpe434.ClassAidClient/school.cpe434.ClassAid.ClassAidClient4Activity} 11-27 18:57:02.424: W/System.err(205): java.net.SocketException: The operation timed out 11-27 18:57:02.454: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.platform.OSNetworkSystem.connectSocketImpl(Native Method) 11-27 18:57:02.454: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.platform.OSNetworkSystem.connect(OSNetworkSystem.java:114) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(PlainSocketImpl.java:245) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at org.apache.harmony.luni.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(PlainSocketImpl.java:220) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at java.net.Socket.startupSocket(Socket.java:780) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at java.net.Socket.<init>(Socket.java:314) 11-27 18:57:02.465: W/System.err(205): at school.cpe434.ClassAid.ClassAidClient4Activity.onCreate(ClassAidClient4Activity.java:102) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.Instrumentation.callActivityOnCreate(Instrumentation.java:1047) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2459) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivity(ActivityThread.java:2512) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.access$2200(ActivityThread.java:119) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(ActivityThread.java:1863) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) 11-27 18:57:02.474: W/System.err(205): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4363) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:860) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:618) 11-27 18:57:02.486: W/System.err(205): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) The server code public class ClassAidServer4Activity extends Activity { ServerSocket ss = null; String mClientMsg = ""; String mClientExtraMsg = ""; Thread myCommsThread = null; public static final int SERVERPORT = 6000; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); TextView tv = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.textView1); tv.setText("Nothing from client yet"); this.myCommsThread = new Thread(new CommsThread()); this.myCommsThread.start(); } class CommsThread implements Runnable { public void run() { // Socket s = null; try { ss = new ServerSocket(SERVERPORT ); } catch (IOException e1) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e1.printStackTrace(); } while(true) { try { Socket socket = ss.accept(); connectedDeviceCount++; Thread lThread = new Thread(new ListeningThread(socket)); lThread.start(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } } class ListeningThread implements Runnable { private Socket s = null; public ListeningThread(Socket socket) { // TODO Auto-generated constructor stub this.s = socket; } @Override public void run() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub while (!Thread.currentThread().isInterrupted()) { Message m = new Message(); // m.what = QUESTION_ID; try { if (s == null) s = ss.accept(); BufferedReader input = new BufferedReader( new InputStreamReader(s.getInputStream())); String st = null; st = input.readLine(); String[] temp = parseReadMessage(st); mClientMsg = temp[1]; if(temp.length > 2) { mClientExtraMsg = temp[2]; } m.what = Integer.parseInt(temp[0]); myUpdateHandler.sendMessage(m); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } } } } The client code public class ClassAidClient4Activity extends Activity { //telnet localhost 5554 //redir add tcp:5000:6000 private Socket socket; private String serverIpAddress = "192.168.1.102"; private static final int REDIRECTED_SERVERPORT = 5000; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); try { InetAddress serverAddr = InetAddress.getByName(serverIpAddress); socket = new Socket(serverAddr, REDIRECTED_SERVERPORT); } catch (UnknownHostException e1) { mQuestionAdapter.add("UnknownHostException"); e1.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e1) { mQuestionAdapter.add("IOException"); e1.printStackTrace(); } } }

  • Handling exceptions, is this a good way?

    - by Jorge Córdoba
    We're struggling with a policy to correctly handle exceptions in our application. Here's our goals for it (summarized): Handle only specific exceptions. Handle only exceptions that you can correct Log only once. We've come out with a solution that involves a generic Application Specific Exception and works like this in a piece of code: try { // Do whatever } catch(ArgumentNullException ane) { // Handle, optinally log and continue } catch(AppSpecificException) { // Rethrow, don't log, don't do anything else throw; } catch(Exception e) { // Log, encapsulate (so that it won't be logged again) and throw Logger.Log("Really bad thing", e.Message, e); throw new AppSpecificException(e) } All exception is logged and then turned to an AppSpecificException so that it won't be logged again. Eventually it will reach the last resort event handler that will deal with it if it has to. I don't have so much experience with exception handling patterns... Is this a good way to solve our goals? Has it any major drawbacks or big red warnings?

  • Correct way to add objects to an ArrayList

    - by ninjasense
    I am trying to add an object to an arraylist but when I view the results of the array list, it keeps adding the same object over and over to the arraylist. I was wondering what the correct way to implement this would be. public static ArrayList<Person> parsePeople(String responseData) { ArrayList<Person> People = new ArrayList<Person>(); try { JSONArray jsonPeople = new JSONArray(responseData); if (!jsonPeople.isNull(0)) { for (int i = 0; i < jsonPeople.length(); i++) { Person.add(new Person(jsonPeople.getJSONObject(i))); } } } catch (JSONException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } catch (Exception e) { } return People; } I have double checked my JSONArray data and made sure they are not duplicates. It seems to keep adding the first object over and over.

  • Performance issues in android game

    - by user1446632
    I am making an android game, but however, the game is functioning like it should, but i am experiencing some performance issues. I think it has something to do with the sound. Cause each time i touch the screen, it makes a sound. I am using the standard MediaPlayer. The method is onTouchEvent() and onPlaySound1(). Could you please help me with an alternate solution for playing the sound? Thank you so much in advance! It would be nice if you also came up with some suggestions on how i can improve my code. Take a look at my code here: package com.mycompany.mygame; import java.util.ArrayList; import android.content.Context; import android.content.Intent; import android.graphics.Bitmap; import android.graphics.BitmapFactory; import android.graphics.Canvas; import android.graphics.Color; import android.graphics.Paint; import android.media.MediaPlayer; import android.os.Handler; import android.os.Message; import android.util.Log; import android.view.Menu; import android.view.MenuInflater; import android.view.MenuItem; import android.view.MotionEvent; import android.view.SurfaceHolder; import android.view.SurfaceView; import android.view.View; import android.webkit.WebView; import android.widget.TextView; import android.widget.Toast; public class ExampleView extends SurfaceView implements SurfaceHolder.Callback { class ExampleThread extends Thread { private ArrayList<Parachuter> parachuters; private Bitmap parachuter; private Bitmap background; private Paint black; private boolean running; private SurfaceHolder mSurfaceHolder; private Context mContext; private Context mContext1; private Handler mHandler; private Handler mHandler1; private GameScreenActivity mActivity; private long frameRate; private boolean loading; public float x; public float y; public float x1; public float y1; public MediaPlayer mp1; public MediaPlayer mp2; public int parachuterIndexToResetAndDelete; public int canvasGetWidth; public int canvasGetWidth1; public int canvasGetHeight; public int livesLeftValue; public int levelValue = 1; public int levelValue1; public int parachutersDown; public int difficultySet; public boolean isSpecialAttackAvailible; public ExampleThread(SurfaceHolder sHolder, Context context, Handler handler) { mSurfaceHolder = sHolder; mHandler = handler; mHandler1 = handler; mContext = context; mActivity = (GameScreenActivity) context; parachuters = new ArrayList<Parachuter>(); parachuter = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.parachuteman); black = new Paint(); black.setStyle(Paint.Style.FILL); black.setColor(Color.GRAY); background = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.gamescreenbackground); running = true; // This equates to 26 frames per second. frameRate = (long) (1000 / 26); loading = true; mp1 = MediaPlayer.create(getContext(), R.raw.bombsound); } @Override public void run() { while (running) { Canvas c = null; try { c = mSurfaceHolder.lockCanvas(); synchronized (mSurfaceHolder) { long start = System.currentTimeMillis(); doDraw(c); long diff = System.currentTimeMillis() - start; if (diff < frameRate) Thread.sleep(frameRate - diff); } } catch (InterruptedException e) { } finally { if (c != null) { mSurfaceHolder.unlockCanvasAndPost(c); } } } } protected void doDraw(Canvas canvas) { canvas.drawRect(0, 0, canvas.getWidth(), canvas.getHeight(), black); //Draw for (int i = 0; i < parachuters.size(); i++) { canvas.drawBitmap(parachuter, parachuters.get(i).getX(), parachuters.get(i).getY(), null); parachuters.get(i).tick(); } //Remove for (int i = 0; i < parachuters.size(); i++) { if (parachuters.get(i).getY() > canvas.getHeight()) { parachuters.remove(i); onPlaySound(); checkLivesLeftValue(); checkAmountOfParachuters(); } else if(parachuters.get(i).isTouched()) { parachuters.remove(i); } else{ //Do nothing } } } public void loadBackground(Canvas canvas) { //Load background canvas.drawBitmap(background, 0, 0, black); } public void checkAmountOfParachuters() { mHandler.post(new Runnable() { @Override public void run() { if(parachuters.isEmpty()) { levelValue = levelValue + 1; Toast.makeText(getContext(), "New level! • C# Dynamic Keyword exception handling

    - by user972255
    The below code throws an exception when executing this line (i.e. something.Add(name)). I want to catch the actual exception when executing this. I mean I don't want to use catch(Exception ex) instead of that I want to know what is the correct exception thrown here. try { dynamic name= "test"; var something = new List<decimal>(); something.Add(name); } catch(Exception ex) { throw ex; } Thanks in advance.

  • How to prevent swallowing exceptions caused by unset expectations for a mocked object?

    - by Schultz9999
    I am looking for a way to modify catch block depending on if it's executed during the unit test run or not. The purpose is basically to detect/setup mock expectations which are swallowed because catch doesn't rethrow. I am using MSTest. One obvious thing is using preprocessor but I don't think it works. Especially if to use DEBUG define. There should be an easy way to detect that, shouldn't it? I must have been looking for something wrong because I couldn't find much info on that. try {...} catch(Exception) { Log(...); #if DEBUG throw; #endif }

  • Behavior of nested finally in Exceptions

    - by kuriouscoder
    Hello: Today at work, I had to review a code snippet that looks similar to this mock example. package test; import java.io.IOException; import org.apache.log4j.Logger; public class ExceptionTester { public static Logger logger = Logger.getLogger(ExceptionTester.class); public void test() throws IOException { new IOException(); } public static void main(String[] args) { ExceptionTester comparator = new ExceptionTester(); try { try { comparator.test(); } finally { System.out.println("Finally 1"); } } catch(IOException ex) { logger.error("Exception happened" ex); // also close opened resources } System.out.println("Exiting out of the program"); } } It's printing the following output.I expected an compile error since the inner try did not have a catch block. Finally 1 Exiting out of the program I do not understand why IOException is caught by the outer catch block. I would appreciate if anyone can explain this, especially by citing stack unwinding process

  • Using methods on 2 input files - 2nd is printing multiple times - Java

    - by Aaa
    I have the following code to read in text, store in a hashmap as bigrams (with other methods to sort them by frequency and do v. v. basic additive smoothing. I had it working great for one language input file (english) and then I want to expand it for the second language input file (japanese - doens;t matter what it is I suppose) using the same methods but the Japanese bigram hashmap is printing out 3 times in a row with diff. values. I've tried using diff text in the input file, making sure there are no gaps in text etc. I've also put print statements at certain places in the Japanese part of the code to see if I can get any clues but all the print statements are printing each time so I can't work out if it is looping at a certain place. I have gone through it with a fine toothcomb but am obviously missing something and slowly going crazy here - any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance... package languagerecognition2; import java.lang.String; import java.io.InputStreamReader; import java.util.*; import java.util.Iterator; import java.util.List.*; import java.util.ArrayList; import java.util.AbstractMap.*; import java.lang.Object; import java.io.*; import java.util.Enumeration; import java.util.Arrays; import java.lang.Math; public class Main { /** public static void main(String[] args) { //training English ----------------------------------------------------------------- File file = new File("english1.txt"); StringBuffer contents = new StringBuffer(); BufferedReader reader = null; try { reader = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file)); String test = null; //test = reader.readLine(); // repeat until all lines are read while ((test = reader.readLine()) != null) { test = test.toLowerCase(); char[] charArrayEng = test.toCharArray(); HashMap<String, Integer> hashMapEng = new HashMap<String, Integer>(bigrams(charArrayEng)); LinkedHashMap<String, Integer> sortedListEng = new LinkedHashMap<String, Integer>(sort(hashMapEng)); int sizeEng=sortedListEng.size(); System.out.println("Total count of English bigrams is " + sizeEng); LinkedHashMap<String, Integer> smoothedListEng = new LinkedHashMap<String, Integer>(smooth(sortedListEng, sizeEng)); //print linkedHashMap to check values Set set= smoothedListEng.entrySet(); Iterator iter = set.iterator ( ) ; System.out.println("Beginning English"); while ( iter.hasNext()) { Map.Entry entry = ( Map.Entry ) iter.next ( ) ; Object key = entry.getKey ( ) ; Object value = entry.getValue ( ) ; System.out.println( key+" : " + value); } System.out.println("End English"); }//end while }//end try catch (FileNotFoundException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } finally { try { if (reader != null) { reader.close(); } } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } //End training English----------------------------------------------------------- //Training japanese-------------------------------------------------------------- File file2 = new File("japanese1.txt"); StringBuffer contents2 = new StringBuffer(); BufferedReader reader2 = null; try { reader2 = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file2)); String test2 = null; //repeat until all lines are read while ((test2 = reader2.readLine()) != null) { test2 = test2.toLowerCase(); char[] charArrayJap = test2.toCharArray(); HashMap<String, Integer> hashMapJap = new HashMap<String, Integer>(bigrams(charArrayJap)); //System.out.println( "bigrams stage"); LinkedHashMap<String, Integer> sortedListJap = new LinkedHashMap<String, Integer>(sort(hashMapJap)); //System.out.println( "sort stage"); int sizeJap=sortedListJap.size(); //System.out.println("Total count of Japanese bigrams is " + sizeJap); LinkedHashMap<String, Integer> smoothedListJap = new LinkedHashMap<String, Integer>(smooth(sortedListJap, sizeJap)); System.out.println( "smooth stage"); //print linkedHashMap to check values Set set2= smoothedListJap.entrySet(); Iterator iter2 = set2.iterator(); System.out.println("Beginning Japanese"); while ( iter2.hasNext()) { Map.Entry entry2 = ( Map.Entry ) iter2.next ( ) ; Object key = entry2.getKey ( ) ; Object value = entry2.getValue ( ) ; System.out.println( key+" : " + value); }//end while System.out.println("End Japanese"); }//end while }//end try catch (FileNotFoundException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } finally { try { if (reader2 != null) { reader2.close(); } } catch (IOException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } //end training Japanese--------------------------------------------------------- } //end main (inner)

  • Cascading MVC controllers with CatchAll Routes

    - by Richard
    Hi, I have an MVC app which has its routes defined with the final route being a catch all route to a "PageController" for a database driven collection of pages. What I want to achieve is to be able to plugin to the app a second controller to the catch all route which the first controller passes on to if it does not find the url recieved in the database. Effectively I want to queue up controllers with catch all actions: public ActionResult PageCatchall(string url) { var page = repository.Get<Page>(string url); if (page != null) { // Handle the request return View(page) } // Otherwise pass to a new controller ???? } Anyone have any good ideas as to how to solve this? I have tried RedirectToAction but that requires that the next controller has a different route to the action. I have tried ActionInvoker but this failed to work the way I did it.

  • How to close IOs?

    - by blackdog
    when i managed IO, i found a problem. i used to close it like this: try { // my code } catch (Exception e) { // my code } finally{ if (is != null) { is.close(); } } but the close method also would throw exception. if i have more than one IO, i have to close all of them. so the code maybe like this: try { // my code } catch (Exception e) { // my code } finally{ if (is1 != null) { is1.close(); } if(is2 != null{ is2.close(); } // many IOs } if is1.close() throws an exception, is2, is3 would not close itself. So i have to type many try-catch-finally to control them. is there other way to solve the problem?

  • Key Events in TabActivities?

    - by stormin986
    I have a TabActivity and want to catch and handle presses of HOME and BACK. Where do I need to catch these events? In my subclass of TabActivity I implement the following: @Override public boolean onKeyDown(int keyCode, KeyEvent event) { switch (keyCode) { // Code handling } return super.onKeyDown(keyCode, event); } Didn't work. So I placed a breakpoint on the switch statement line. But this function never gets called, whether I press volume up/down, menu, home, or back. Where do I need to catch these KeyEvents?

  • C++: Throwing shared_ptr of derived and catching shared_ptr of base?

    - by hasvn
    Ok, I've been told this problem: Why can you throw a pointer to a derived class and catch a pointer to its base... but you can't do that with shared_ptrs? Example, this works: class Base {}; class Derived : public Base {}; int main() { try { throw new Derived() ; } catch( const Base2 * b ) { printf("Received a base" ) ; } return 0 ; } But this doesn't int main() { try { throw std::tr1::shared_ptr<Derived>( new Derived() ) ; } catch( const std::tr1::shared_ptr<Base> & b ) { printf("Received a base" ) ; } return 0 ; } Any ideas?

  • Whether to check for null

    - by coffeeaddict
    I know that you should always check incoming params to a method for null. But what if I have this scenario with a try/catch referring to a local variable. Do I really need to check for null below? Because it's gonna catch it anyway if it's null and the next line of code tries to use the refundResponse variable: public string DoRefund(...) { try { ...... string refundTransactionID = string.Empty; ...... RefundTransactionResponseType refundResponse = transaction.DoRefund(...); if (refundResponse != null) refundTransactionID = refundResponse.RefundTransactionID; ..... } catch (Exception ex) { LogError(ex); return ex.ToString(); } }

  • I set a global bug catcher in my application for unhandled exceptions and it is picking up all exceptions

    - by user1632018
    I am trying to figure out why this is happing. In my vb.net application I set a global handler in the ApplicationEvents.vb which I thought would only pick up any unhandled exceptions, although it is picking up every exception that happens in my application whether or not they are handled with try catch blocks. Here is my code in applicationevents Private Sub MyApplication_UnhandledException(ByVal _ sender As Object, ByVal e As _ Microsoft.VisualBasic.ApplicationServices.UnhandledExceptionEventArgs) _ Handles Me.UnhandledException e.ExitApplication = _ MessageBox.Show(e.Exception.Message & _ vbCrLf & "The application has encountered a bug, would you like to Continue?", "An Error has occured.", _ MessageBoxButtons.YesNo, _ MessageBoxIcon.Question) _ = DialogResult.No End Sub In the rest of my application I set normal try catch blocks like this: Try Catch ex as exception End Try Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

  • Scripting with the Sun ZFS Storage 7000 Appliance

    - by Geoff Ongley
    The Sun ZFS Storage 7000 appliance has a user friendly and easy to understand graphical web based interface we call the "BUI" or "Browser User Interface".This interface is very useful for many tasks, but in some cases a script (or workflow) may be more appropriate, such as:Repetitive tasksTasks which work on (or obtain information about) a large number of shares or usersTasks which are triggered by an alert threshold (workflows)Tasks where you want a only very basic input, but a consistent output (workflows)The appliance scripting language is based on ECMAscript 3 (close to javascript). I'm not going to cover ECMAscript 3 in great depth (I'm far from an expert here), but I would like to show you some neat things you can do with the appliance, to get you started based on what I have found from my own playing around.I'm making the assumption you have some sort of programming background, and understand variables, arrays, functions to some extent - but of course if something is not clear, please let me know so I can fix it up or clarify it.Variable Declarations and ArraysVariablesECMAScript is a dynamically and weakly typed language. If you don't know what that means, google is your friend - but at a high level it means we can just declare variables with no specific type and on the fly.For example, I can declare a variable and use it straight away in the middle of my code, for example:projects=list();Which makes projects an array of values that are returned from the list(); function (which is usable in most contexts). With this kind of variable, I can do things like:projects.length (this property on array tells you how many objects are in it, good for for loops etc). Alternatively, I could say:projects=3;and now projects is just a simple number.Should we declare variables like this so loosely? In my opinion, the answer is no - I feel it is a better practice to declare variables you are going to use, before you use them - and given them an initial value. You can do so as follows:var myVariable=0;To demonstrate the ability to just randomly assign and change the type of variables, you can create a simple script at the cli as follows (bold for input):fishy10:> script("." to run)> run("cd /");("." to run)> run ("shares");("." to run)> var projects;("." to run)> projects=list();("." to run)> printf("Number of projects is: %d\n",projects.length);("." to run)> projects=152;("." to run)> printf("Value of the projects variable as an integer is now: %d\n",projects);("." to run)> .Number of projects is: 7Value of the projects variable as an integer is now: 152You can also confirm this behaviour by checking the typeof variable we are dealing with:fishy10:> script("." to run)> run("cd /");("." to run)> run ("shares");("." to run)> var projects;("." to run)> projects=list();("." to run)> printf("var projects is of type %s\n",typeof(projects));("." to run)> projects=152;("." to run)> printf("var projects is of type %s\n",typeof(projects));("." to run)> .var projects is of type objectvar projects is of type numberArraysSo you likely noticed that we have already touched on arrays, as the list(); (in the shares context) stored an array into the 'projects' variable.But what if you want to declare your own array? Easy! This is very similar to Java and other languages, we just instantiate a brand new "Array" object using the keyword new:var myArray = new Array();will create an array called "myArray".A quick example:fishy10:> script("." to run)> testArray = new Array();("." to run)> testArray[0]="This";("." to run)> testArray[1]="is";("." to run)> testArray[2]="just";("." to run)> testArray[3]="a";("." to run)> testArray[4]="test";("." to run)> for (i=0; i < testArray.length; i++)("." to run)> {("." to run)>    printf("Array element %d is %s\n",i,testArray[i]);("." to run)> }("." to run)> .Array element 0 is ThisArray element 1 is isArray element 2 is justArray element 3 is aArray element 4 is testWorking With LoopsFor LoopFor loops are very similar to those you will see in C, java and several other languages. One of the key differences here is, as you were made aware earlier, we can be a bit more sloppy with our variable declarations.The general way you would likely use a for loop is as follows:for (variable; test-case; modifier for variable){}For example, you may wish to declare a variable i as 0; and a MAX_ITERATIONS variable to determine how many times this loop should repeat:var i=0;var MAX_ITERATIONS=10;And then, use this variable to be tested against some case existing (has i reached MAX_ITERATIONS? - if not, increment i using i++);for (i=0; i < MAX_ITERATIONS; i++){ // some work to do}So lets run something like this on the appliance:fishy10:> script("." to run)> var i=0;("." to run)> var MAX_ITERATIONS=10;("." to run)> for (i=0; i < MAX_ITERATIONS; i++)("." to run)> {("." to run)>    printf("The number is %d\n",i);("." to run)> }("." to run)> .The number is 0The number is 1The number is 2The number is 3The number is 4The number is 5The number is 6The number is 7The number is 8The number is 9While LoopWhile loops again are very similar to other languages, we loop "while" a condition is met. For example:fishy10:> script("." to run)> var isTen=false;("." to run)> var counter=0;("." to run)> while(isTen==false)("." to run)> {("." to run)>    if (counter==10) ("." to run)>    { ("." to run)>            isTen=true;   ("." to run)>    } ("." to run)>    printf("Counter is %d\n",counter);("." to run)>    counter++;    ("." to run)> }("." to run)> printf("Loop has ended and Counter is %d\n",counter);("." to run)> .Counter is 0Counter is 1Counter is 2Counter is 3Counter is 4Counter is 5Counter is 6Counter is 7Counter is 8Counter is 9Counter is 10Loop has ended and Counter is 11So what do we notice here? Something has actually gone wrong - counter will technically be 11 once the loop completes... Why is this?Well, if we have a loop like this, where the 'while' condition that will end the loop may be set based on some other condition(s) existing (such as the counter has reached 10) - we must ensure that we  terminate this iteration of the loop when the condition is met - otherwise the rest of the code will be followed which may not be desirable. In other words, like in other languages, we will only ever check the loop condition once we are ready to perform the next iteration, so any other code after we set "isTen" to be true, will still be executed as we can see it was above.We can avoid this by adding a break into our loop once we know we have set the condition - this will stop the rest of the logic being processed in this iteration (and as such, counter will not be incremented). So lets try that again:fishy10:> script("." to run)> var isTen=false;("." to run)> var counter=0;("." to run)> while(isTen==false)("." to run)> {("." to run)>    if (counter==10) ("." to run)>    { ("." to run)>            isTen=true;   ("." to run)>            break;("." to run)>    } ("." to run)>    printf("Counter is %d\n",counter);("." to run)>    counter++;    ("." to run)> }("." to run)> printf("Loop has ended and Counter is %d\n", counter);("." to run)> .Counter is 0Counter is 1Counter is 2Counter is 3Counter is 4Counter is 5Counter is 6Counter is 7Counter is 8Counter is 9Loop has ended and Counter is 10Much better!Methods to Obtain and Manipulate DataGet MethodThe get method allows you to get simple properties from an object, for example a quota from a user. The syntax is fairly simple:var myVariable=get('property');An example of where you may wish to use this, is when you are getting a bunch of information about a user (such as quota information when in a shares context):var users=list();for(k=0; k < users.length; k++){     user=users[k];     run('select ' + user);     var username=get('name');     var usage=get('usage');     var quota=get('quota');...Which you can then use to your advantage - to print or manipulate infomation (you could change a user's information with a set method, based on the information returned from the get method). The set method is explained next.Set MethodThe set method can be used in a simple manner, similar to get. The syntax for set is:set('property','value'); // where value is a string, if it was a number, you don't need quotesFor example, we could set the quota on a share as follows (first observing the initial value):fishy10:shares default/test-geoff> script("." to run)> var currentQuota=get('quota');("." to run)> printf("Current Quota is: %s\n",currentQuota);("." to run)> set('quota','30G');("." to run)> run('commit');("." to run)> currentQuota=get('quota');("." to run)> printf("Current Quota is: %s\n",currentQuota);("." to run)> .Current Quota is: 0Current Quota is: 32212254720This shows us using both the get and set methods as can be used in scripts, of course when only setting an individual share, the above is overkill - it would be much easier to set it manually at the cli using 'set quota=3G' and then 'commit'.List MethodThe list method can be very powerful, especially in more complex scripts which iterate over large amounts of data and manipulate it if so desired. The general way you will use list is as follows:var myVar=list();Which will make "myVar" an array, containing all the objects in the relevant context (this could be a list of users, shares, projects, etc). You can then gather or manipulate data very easily.We could list all the shares and mountpoints in a given project for example:fishy10:shares another-project> script("." to run)> var shares=list();("." to run)> for (i=0; i < shares.length; i++)("." to run)> {("." to run)>    run('select ' + shares[i]);("." to run)>    var mountpoint=get('mountpoint');("." to run)>    printf("Share %s discovered, has mountpoint %s\n",shares[i],mountpoint);("." to run)>    run('done');("." to run)> }("." to run)> .Share and-another discovered, has mountpoint /export/another-project/and-anotherShare another-share discovered, has mountpoint /export/another-project/another-shareShare bob discovered, has mountpoint /export/another-projectShare more-shares-for-all discovered, has mountpoint /export/another-project/more-shares-for-allShare yep discovered, has mountpoint /export/another-project/yepWriting More Complex and Re-Usable CodeFunctionsThe best way to be able to write more complex code is to use functions to split up repeatable or reusable sections of your code. This also makes your more complex code easier to read and understand for other programmers.We write functions as follows:function functionName(variable1,variable2,...,variableN){}For example, we could have a function that takes a project name as input, and lists shares for that project (assuming we're already in the 'project' context - context is important!):function getShares(proj){        run('select ' + proj);        shares=list();        printf("Project: %s\n", proj);        for(j=0; j < shares.length; j++)        {                printf("Discovered share: %s\n",shares[i]);        }        run('done'); // exit selected project}Commenting your CodeLike any other language, a large part of making it readable and understandable is to comment it. You can use the same comment style as in C and Java amongst other languages.In other words, sngle line comments use://at the beginning of the comment.Multi line comments use:/*at the beginning, and:*/ at the end.For example, here we will use both:fishy10:> script("." to run)> // This is a test comment("." to run)> printf("doing some work...\n");("." to run)> /* This is a multi-line("." to run)> comment which I will span across("." to run)> three lines in total */("." to run)> printf("doing some more work...\n");("." to run)> .doing some work...doing some more work...Your comments do not have to be on their own, they can begin (particularly with single line comments this is handy) at the end of a statement, for examplevar projects=list(); // The variable projects is an array containing all projects on the system.Try and Catch StatementsYou may be used to using try and catch statements in other languages, and they can (and should) be utilised in your code to catch expected or unexpected error conditions, that you do NOT wish to stop your code from executing (if you do not catch these errors, your script will exit!):try{  // do some work}catch(err) // Catch any error that could occur{ // do something here under the error condition}For example, you may wish to only execute some code if a context can be reached. If you can't perform certain actions under certain circumstances, that may be perfectly acceptable.For example if you want to test a condition that only makes sense when looking at a SMB/NFS share, but does not make sense when you hit an iscsi or FC LUN, you don't want to stop all processing of other shares you may not have covered yet.For example we may wish to obtain quota information on all shares for all users on a share (but this makes no sense for a LUN):function getShareQuota(shar) // Get quota for each user of this share{        run('select ' + shar);        printf("  SHARE: %s\n", shar);        try        {                run('users');                printf("    %20s        %11s    %11s    %3s\n","Username","Usage(G)","Quota(G)","Quota(%)");                printf("    %20s        %11s    %11s    %4s\n","--------","--------","--------","----");                                users=list();                for(k=0; k < users.length; k++)                {                        user=users[k];                        getUserQuota(user);                }                run('done'); // exit user context        }        catch(err)        {                printf("    SKIPPING %s - This is NOT a NFS or CIFs share, not looking for users\n", shar);        }        run('done'); // done with this share}Running Scripts Remotely over SSHAs you have likely noticed, writing and running scripts for all but the simplest jobs directly on the appliance is not going to be a lot of fun.There's a couple of choices on what you can do here:Create scripts on a remote system and run them over sshCreate scripts, wrapping them in workflow code, so they are stored on the appliance and can be triggered under certain circumstances (like a threshold being reached)We'll cover the first one here, and then cover workflows later on (as these are for the most part just scripts with some wrapper information around them).Creating a SSH Public/Private SSH Key PairLog on to your handy Solaris box (You wouldn't be using any other OS, right? :P) and use ssh-keygen to create a pair of ssh keys. I'm storing this separate to my normal key:[geoff@lightning ~] ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 1024Generating public/private rsa key pair.Enter file in which to save the key (/export/home/geoff/.ssh/id_rsa): /export/home/geoff/.ssh/nas_key_rsaEnter passphrase (empty for no passphrase): Enter same passphrase again: Your identification has been saved in /export/home/geoff/.ssh/nas_key_rsa.Your public key has been saved in /export/home/geoff/.ssh/nas_key_rsa.pub.The key fingerprint is:7f:3d:53:f0:2a:5e:8b:2d:94:2a:55:77:66:5c:9b:14 geoff@lightningInstalling the Public Key on the ApplianceOn your Solaris host, observe the public key:[geoff@lightning ~] cat .ssh/nas_key_rsa.pub ssh-rsa AAAAB3NzaC1yc2EAAAABIwAAAIEAvYfK3RIaAYmMHBOvyhKM41NaSmcgUMC3igPN5gUKJQvSnYmjuWG6CBr1CkF5UcDji7v19jG3qAD5lAMFn+L0CxgRr8TNaAU+hA4/tpAGkjm+dKYSyJgEdMIURweyyfUFXoerweR8AWW5xlovGKEWZTAfvJX9Zqvh8oMQ5UJLUUc= geoff@lightningNow, copy and paste everything after "ssh-rsa" and before "user@hostname" - in this case, geoff@lightning. This is important!Also - there is plenty of properties you can set on the parameters for your workflow, these are described in the Sun ZFS Storage System Administration Guide.Creating a Basic Workflow from a Basic ScriptTo make a basic script into a basic workflow, you need to wrap the following around your script to create a 'workflow' object:var workflow = {name: 'Get User Quotas',description: 'Displays Quota Utilisation for each user on each share',execute: function() {// (basic script goes here, minus the "script" at the beginning, and "." at the end)}};However, it appears (at least in my experience to date) that the workflow object may only be happy with one function in the execute parameter - either that or I'm doing something wrong. As far as I can tell, after execute: you should only have a basic one function context like so:execute: function(){}To deal with this, and to give an example similar to our script earlier, I have created another simple quota check, to show the same basic functionality, but in a workflow format:var workflow = {name: 'Get User Quotas',description: 'Displays Quota Utilisation for each user on each share',execute: function () {        run('cd /');        run('shares');        projects=list();                for (i=0; i < projects.length; i++)        {                run('select ' + projects[i]);                shares=list('filesystem');                printf("Project: %s\n", projects[i]);                for(j=0; j < shares.length; j++)                {                        run('select ' +shares[j]);                        try                        {                                run('users');                                printf("  SHARE: %s\n", shares[j]);                                printf("    %20s        %11s    %11s    %3s\n","Username","Usage(G)","Quota(G)","Quota(%)");                                printf("    %20s        %11s    %11s    %4s\n","--------","--------","--------","-------");                                users=list();                                for(k=0; k < users.length; k++)                                {                                        run('select ' + users[k]);                                        username=get('name');                                        usage=get('usage');                                        quota=get('quota');                                        usage_g=usage / 1073741824; // convert bytes to gigabytes                                        quota_g=quota / 1073741824; // as above                                        quota_percent=0                                        if (quota > 0)                                        {                                                quota_percent=(usage / quota)*(100/1);                                        }                                        printf("    %20s        %8.2f   %8.2f   %d%%\n",username,usage_g,quota_g,quota_percent);                                        run('done');                                }                                run('done'); // exit user context                        }                        catch(err)                        {                        //      printf("    %s is a LUN, Not looking for users\n", shares[j]);                        }                        run('done'); // exit selected share context                }                run('done'); // exit project context        }        }};SummaryThe Sun ZFS Storage 7000 Appliance offers lots of different and interesting features to Sun/Oracle customers, including the world renowned Analytics. • Test All Features of Windows Phone 7 On Your PC

    - by Matthew Guay
    Are you developer or just excited about the upcoming Windows Phone 7, and want to try it out now?  Thanks to free developer tools from Microsoft and a new unlocked emulator rom, you can try out most of the exciting features today from your PC. Last week we showed you how to try out Windows Phone 7 on your PC and get started developing for the upcoming new devices.  We noticed, however, that the emulator only contains Internet Explorer Mobile and some settings.  This is still interesting to play around with, but it wasn’t the full Windows Phone 7 experience. Some enterprising tweakers discovered that more applications were actually included in the emulator, but were simply hidden from users.  Developer Dan Ardelean then figured out how to re-enable these features, and released a tweaked emulator rom so everyone can try out all of the Windows Phone 7 features for themselves.  Here we’ll look at how you can run this new emulator image on your PC, and then look at some interesting features in Windows Phone 7. Editor Note: This modified emulator image is not official, and isn’t sanctioned by Microsoft. Use your own judgment when choosing to download and use the emulator. Setting Up Emulator Rom To test-drive Windows Phone 7 on your PC, you must first download and install the Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP (link below).  Follow the steps we showed you last week at: Try out Windows Phone 7 on your PC today.  Once it’s installed, go ahead and run the default emulator as we showed to make sure everything works ok. Once the Windows Phone Developer Tools are installed and running, download the new emulator rom from XDA Forums (link below).  This will be a zip file, so extract it first. Note where you save the file, as you will need the address in the next step. Now, to run our new emulator image, we need to open the emulator in command line and point to the new rom image.  To do this, browse to the correct directory, depending on whether you’re running the 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows: 32 bit: C:\Program Files\Microsoft XDE\1.0\ 64 bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft XDE\1.0\ Hold your Shift key down and right-click in the folder.  Choose Open Command Window here. At the command prompt, enter XDE.exe followed by the location of your new rom image.  Here, we downloaded the rom to our download folder, so at the command prompt we entered: XDE.exe C:\Users\Matthew\Downloads\WM70Full\WM70Full.bin The emulator loads … with the full Windows Phone 7 experience! To make it easier, let’s make a shortcut on our desktop to load the emulator with the new rom directly.  Right-click on your desktop (or any folder you want to create the shortcut in), select New, and then Shortcut. Now, in the box, we need to enter the path for the emulator followed by the location of our rom.  Both items must be in quotes.  So, in our test, we entered the following: 32 bit: “C:\Program Files\Microsoft XDE\1.0\” “C:\Users\Matthew\Downloads\WM70Full\WM70Full.bin” 64 bit: “C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft XDE\1.0\” “C:\Users\Matthew\Downloads\WM70Full\WM70Full.bin” Make sure to enter the correct location of the new emulator rom for your computer, and keep both items in separate quotes.  Click next when you’ve entered the location. Name the shortcut; we named it Windows Phone 7, but simply enter whatever you’d like.  Click Finish when you’re done. You should now have a nice Windows Phone icon and your fully functional shortcut!  Double-click it to run the Windows Phone 7 emulator as above. Features in the Unlocked Windows Phone 7 Emulator So let’s look at what you can do with this new emulator.  Almost everything you’ve seen in demos from the Mobile World Conference and Mix’10 are right here for you to play with.  Here’s the application menu, which you can access by clicking on the arrow on the top of the home screen, which shows how much stuff they’ve got in this!   And, of course, even the home screen itself shows much more activity than it did in the original emulator. Let’s check out some of these sections.  Here’s Zune running on Windows Phone 7, and the Zune Marketplace.  The animations are beautiful, so be sure to check this out yourself. The new picture hub is much nicer than any picture viewer included with Windows Mobile in the past…   Stay productive, and on schedule with the new Calendar. The XBOX hub gives us only a hint of things to come, and the links to games now are simply placeholders. Here’s a look at the Office hub.  This doesn’t show up on the homescreen right now, but you can access it in the applications menu.  Office obviously still has a lot of work left on it, but even at a glance here it looks like it includes a lot more functionality than Office Mobile in Windows Mobile 6. Here’s a look at each of the three apps: Word, Excel, and OneNote, and the formatting pallet in Office apps.   This emulator also includes a lot more settings than the default one, including settings for individual applications. You can even activate the screen lock, and try out the lift-to-peek-or-unlock feature… Finally, this version of Windows Phone 7 includes a very nice SystemInfo app with an advanced task manager.  We hope this is still available when the actual phones are released. • trouble running smooth animation in thread only when using key listener

    - by heysuse renard
    first time using a forum for coding help so sorry if i post this all wrong. i have more than a few classes i don't think screenManger or core holds the problem but i included them just incase. i got most of this code working through a set of tutorials. but a certain point started trying to do more on my own. i want to play the animation only when i'm moving my sprite. in my KeyTest class i am using threads to run the animation it used to work (poorly) but now not at all pluss it really gunks up my computer. i think it's because of the thread. im new to threads so i'm not to sure if i should even be using one in this situation or if its dangerous for my computer. the animation worked smoothly when i had the sprite bouce around the screen forever. the animation loop played with out stopping. i think the main problem is between the animationThread, Sprite, and keyTest classes, but itcould be more indepth. if someone could point me in the right direction for making the animation run smoothly when i push down a key and stop runing when i let off it would be greatly apriciated. i already looked at this Java a moving animation (sprite) obviously we were doing the same tutorial. but i feel my problem is slightly different. p.s. sorry for the typos. import java.awt.*; • Do not use “using” in WCF Client

    - by oazabir
    You know that any IDisposable object must be disposed using using. So, you have been using using to wrap WCF service’s ChannelFactory and Clients like this: using(var client = new SomeClient()) {. ..} Or, if you are doing it the hard and slow way (without really knowing why), then: using(var factory = new ChannelFactory<ISomeService>()) {var channel= factory.CreateChannel();...} That’s what we have all learnt in school right? We have learnt it wrong! When there’s a network related error or the connection is broken, or the call is timed out before Dispose is called by the using keyword, then it results in the following exception when the using keyword tries to dispose the channel: failed: System.ServiceModel.CommunicationObjectFaultedException : The communication object, System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServiceChannel, cannot be used for communication because it is in the Faulted state. Server stack trace: at System.ServiceModel.Channels.CommunicationObject.Close(TimeSpan timeout) Exception rethrown at [0]: at System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy.HandleReturnMessage(IMessage reqMsg, IMessage retMsg) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Proxies.RealProxy.PrivateInvoke(MessageData& msgData, Int32 type) at System.ServiceModel.ICommunicationObject.Close(TimeSpan timeout) at System.ServiceModel.ClientBase`1.System.ServiceModel.ICommunicationObject.Close(TimeSpan timeout) at System.ServiceModel.ClientBase`1.Close() at System.ServiceModel.ClientBase`1.System.IDisposable.Dispose() There are various reasons for which the underlying connection can be at broken state before the using block is completed and the .Dispose() is called. Common problems like network connection dropping, IIS doing an app pool recycle at that moment, some proxy sitting between you and the service dropping the connection for various reasons and so on. The point is, it might seem like a corner case, but it’s a likely corner case. If you are building a highly available client, you need to treat this properly before you go-live. So, do NOT use using on WCF Channel/Client/ChannelFactory. Instead you need to use an alternative. Here’s what you can do: First create an extension method. public static class WcfExtensions{ public static void Using<T>(this T client, Action<T> work) where T : ICommunicationObject { try { work(client); client.Close(); } catch (CommunicationException e) { client.Abort(); } catch (TimeoutException e) { client.Abort(); } catch (Exception e) { client.Abort(); throw; } }} Then use this instead of the using keyword: new SomeClient().Using(channel => { channel.Login(username, password);}); Or if you are using ChannelFactory then: new ChannelFactory<ISomeService>().Using(channel => { channel.Login(username, password);}); Enjoy!
