  • Announcing the June 2012 Release of the Ajax Control Toolkit

    I’m excited to announce the June 2012 release of the Ajax Control Toolkit. You can download the new release by visiting http://AjaxControlToolkit.CodePlex.com or (better) download the new release with NuGet: Install-Package AjaxControlToolkit The Ajax Control Toolkit continues to be super popular. The previous release (May 2012) had over 87,000 downloads from CodePlex.com and over 16,000 downloads from NuGet. That’s over 100,000 downloads in less than 2 months. Security Improvements for the HtmlEditorExtender Unfortunately, in the previous release, we made the HtmlEditorExtender too secure! We upgraded the version of the Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library included in the Ajax Control Toolkit to the latest version (version 4.2.1) and the latest version turned out to be way too aggressive about stripping HTML. It not only strips dangerous tags such as <script> tags, it also strips innocent tags such as <b> tags. When the latest version of the Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library is used with the HtmlEditorExtender, the library strips all rich content from the HtmlEditorExtender control which defeats the purpose of using the control. Therefore, we had to find a replacement for the Microsoft Anti-Cross Site Scripting Library. In this release, we’ve created a new HTML sanitizer built on the HTML Agility Pack. If you were using the AntiXssSanitizerProvider then you will need to substitute the HtmlAgilityPackSanitizerProvider. In particular, you need to modify the sanitizer sections in your Web.config file like this: <configuration> <configSections> <sectionGroup name="system.web"> <section name="sanitizer" requirePermission="false" type="AjaxControlToolkit.Sanitizer.ProviderSanitizerSection, AjaxControlToolkit" /> </sectionGroup> </configSections> <system.web> <sanitizer defaultProvider="HtmlAgilityPackSanitizerProvider"> <providers> <add name="HtmlAgilityPackSanitizerProvider" type="AjaxControlToolkit.Sanitizer.HtmlAgilityPackSanitizerProvider"></add> </providers> </sanitizer> </system.web> </configuration> We made one other backwards-breaking change to improve the security of the HtmlEditorExtender. We want to make sure that users don’t accidently use the HtmlEditorExtender without an HTML sanitizer by accident. Therefore, if you don’t configure a HTML sanitizer provider in the web.config file then you’ll get the following error: If you really want to use the HtmlEditorExtender without using an HTML sanitizer – for example, you are using the HtmlEditorExtender for an Intranet application and you trust all of your fellow employees – then you can explicitly indicate that you don’t want to enable HTML sanitization by setting the EnableSanitization property to false like this: <ajaxToolkit:HtmlEditorExtender TargetControlID="txtComments" EnableSanitization="false" runat="server" /> Please don’t ever set the EnableSanitization property to false for a public website. If you disable HTML sanitization then you are making your website an easy target for Cross-Site Scripting attacks. Lots of Fixes for the ComboBox Control In the latest release, we also made several important bug fixes and feature enhancements to the ComboBox control. Here’s the list of issues that we fixed: 22930 — ComboBox doesn’t close its drop down list when losing input focus to another ComboBox control 23140 — ComboBox Issues – Delete, Backspace, Period 23142 — ComboxBox SelectedIndex = -1 does not clear text 24440 — ComboBox postback on enter 25295 — ComboBox problems when container is hidden at page load 25469 — ComboBox – MaxLength ignored 26686 — Backspace and Delete exception when optionList is null 27148 — Combobox breaks if ClientIDMode is static Fixes to Other Controls In this release, we also made bug fixes and enhancements to the UpdatePanelAnimation, Tabs, and Seadragon controls: 21310 — OnUpdated animation starts before OnUpdating has finished 26690 — Seadragon Control’s openTileSource() method doesn’t work (with fix) Title is required We also fixed an issue with the Tabs control which would result in an InvalidOperation exception.   • Any alternative to hide querystring from Html.actionlink on ASP.NET MVC Page?

    Hi I have a page called SearchDcouments.aspx that displays all the matching documents as Hyperlinks in the table format as below. When the User clicks on any particular document, the sample url will be: http://localhost:52483/Home/ShowDocument?docID=280 So that the DocumentID is passed as Querystring to the ControllerMethod ShowDocument and the ID is visible in the URL. Now for Security purposes, I want to hide this way of passing the Querystring parameters. Wondering what are the alternatives to hide the DocID from the URL? Appreciate your responses.   • How * tag can be used in CSS?

    I'm trying to understand how a background image is used in a css button. It seems the image is much larger than the button, still the corners are matched to the button(resulting a rounded corner button). It seems it is related to .btn *. I couldn't find any reference about how * can be used. Can you explain how the image is rendered in the button, using the * tag? I assume * will match any element.   • Penetration testing with Nikto, unknown results found

    I've scanned my new webserver and I'm surprised to find that in the results there's programs that I never installed. This is a fresh new install of Ubuntu 12.04 and just installed Php 5.3, mysql, fail2ban, apache2, git, a few other things.   • Context migration in CUDA.NET

    I'm currently using CUDA.NET library by GASS. I need to initialize cuda arrays (actually cublas vectors, but it doesn't matters) in one CPU thread and use them in other CPU thread. But CUDA context which holding all initialized arrays and loaded functions, can be attached to only one CPU thread. There is mechanism called context migration API to detach context from one thread and attach it to another. But i don't how to properly use it in CUDA.NET.   • IIS 6 ASP.NET default handler-mappings and virtual directories

    I'm having a problem with setting a default mapping in IIS 6. I want to secure *.HTML files with ASP.NET forms authentication. The problem seems to have something to do with using virtual directories to hold the html files. Here's how it's setup: sample directory tree c:/inetpub/ (nothing in here) d:/web_files/my_web_apps d:/web_files/my_web_apps/app1/ d:/web_files/my_web_apps/app2/ d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/ app1 and app2 both access the same html_files directory, so html_files is set as a virtual directory in the web apps in IIS... sample web directory tree //app1/html_files/ (points to physical directory: d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/) //app2/html_files/ (points to physical directory: d:/web_files/my_web_apps/html_files/) If I put a file called test.html in the root of //app1/ and then add the default mapping to the asp.net dll and setup my security on the root folder with deny="?", then accessing test.html works exactly as expected. If I'm not authenticated, it takes me to the login.aspx page, and if I am authenticated then it displays test.html. If I put the test.html file in the html_files directory I get a totally different behavior. Now the login.aspx page loads and I stuck some code in to check if I was still authenticated: <p>autheticated: <%=User.Identity.IsAuthenticated%></p> I figured it would say false because why else would it bother to load the login page? Nope, it says true - so it knows i'm authenticated, but it won't give me access to the test.html file. I've spent several hours on this and haven't been able to solve it. I'm going to spend some more time on google to see if I've missed something. Fingers crossed.

  • Setting up a "cookieless domain" to improve site performance

    I was reading in Google's documentation about improving site speed. One of their recommendations is serving static content (images, css, js, etc.) from a "cookieless domain": Static content, such as images, JS and CSS files, don't need to be accompanied by cookies, as there is no user interaction with these resources. You can decrease request latency by serving static resources from a domain that doesn't serve cookies. Google then says that the best way to do this is to buy a new domain and set it to point to your current one: To reserve a cookieless domain for serving static content, register a new domain name and configure your DNS database with a CNAME record that points the new domain to your existing domain A record. Configure your web server to serve static resources from the new domain, and do not allow any cookies to be set anywhere on this domain. In your web pages, reference the domain name in the URLs for the static resources. This is pretty straight forward stuff, except for the bit where it says to "configure your web server to serve static resources from the new domain, and do not allow any cookies to be set anywhere on this domain". From what I've read, there's no setting in IIS that allows you to say "serve static resources", so how do I prevent ASP.NET from setting cookies on this new domain? At present, even if I'm just requesting a .jpg from the new domain, it sets a cookie on my browser, even though our application's cookies are set to our old domain. For example, ASP.NET sets an ".ASPXANONYMOUS" cookie that (as far as I'm aware) we're not telling it to do. Apologies if this is a real newb question, I'm new at this! Thanks.

  • Grails: How to include an html link inside a <g:message> default attribute?

    Hi, I am starting with Grails and want to have one page with multilanguage content. I started using the tag which works fine. But here is what I want to do: I want to include the default text of the default language right in the text, to avoid switching back and forth in between files. <g:message code="homepage.feature.headline1" default="This is an english text" /> The above works. But now I a have a message which should include a link like this: <g:message code="homepage.feature.headline1" default="This is an english text with <a href='somefile.html'>a link</a>" /> This gives me an exception: org.codehaus.groovy.grails.web.pages.exceptions.GroovyPagesException: Error processing GroovyPageView: Grails tags were not closed! [[<g:message>]] in GSP How can I achieve that I can include a link there? I have tried escaping the < brackets but still no luck.     Hello, I have Windows 7 and I have very strange thing with my network. Some time I was connected through wireless router and my IP was 192.168.2.103, router's IP was 192.168.2.1 and some other IP was 192.168.2.100. The last I get from page "active DHCP clients" of web interface of the router and from "wireless clients" I may to see that 192.168.2.100 not (!) belong to my MAC address. Router build by EDimax. So after that I disabled wireless function of the router and restarted it. In this time I had not ping to 192.168.2.1. Also I had not any other connection, not wireless nor cable, but (!) I still had ping to 192.168.2.100 and I not understand what this voodoo is...   • Wrappers/law of demeter seems to be an anti-pattern...

    I've been reading up on this "Law of Demeter" thing, and it (and pure "wrapper" classes in general) seem to generally be anti patterns. Consider an implementation class: class Foo { void doSomething() { /* whatever */ } } Now consider two different implementations of another class: class Bar1 { private static Foo _foo = new Foo(); public static Foo getFoo() { return _foo; } } class Bar2 { private static Foo _foo = new Foo(); public static void doSomething() { _foo.doSomething(); } } And the ways to call said methods: callingMethod() { Bar1.getFoo().doSomething(); // Version 1 Bar2.doSomething(); // Version 2 } At first blush, version 1 seems a bit simpler, and follows the "rule of Demeter", hide Foo's implementation, etc, etc. But this ties any changes in Foo to Bar. For example, if a parameter is added to doSomething, then we have: class Foo { void doSomething(int x) { /* whatever */ } } class Bar1 { private static Foo _foo = new Foo(); public static Foo getFoo() { return _foo; } } class Bar2 { private static Foo _foo = new Foo(); public static void doSomething(int x) { _foo.doSomething(x); } } callingMethod() { Bar1.getFoo().doSomething(5); // Version 1 Bar2.doSomething(5); // Version 2 } In both versions, Foo and callingMethod need to be changed, but in Version 2, Bar also needs to be changed.     I know nothing about jQuery but am an experienced C++ programmer (not sure if that helps or hurts). I found jQuery code that gives me the row and column index of a cell in an HTML table when a user clicks on that cell. Using such row-column index numbers, I need to change an attribute's value in the previously selected cell and in the cell just clicked.     I'd like to have a shared 404 page to use across my virtual hosts. The following is my setup. Two sites, each with their own config file in /sites-available/ and /sites-enabled/ www.foo.com bar.foo.com The www directory is set up as: www/ foo.com/ foo.com/index.html bar.foo.com/ bar.foo.com/index.html shared/ shared/404.html Both config files in /sites-available are the same except for the root and server name: root /var/www/bar.foo.com; index index.html index.htm index.php; server_name bar.foo.com; location / { try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php; } error_page 404 /404.html; location = /404.html { root /var/www/shared; } I've tried the above code and also tried setting error_page 404 /var/www/shared/404.html (without the following location block). I've also double checked to make sure my permissions are set to 775 for all folders and files in www. When I try to access a non-existent page, Nginx serves the respective index.php of the virtual host I'm trying to access. Can anyone point out what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

  • Django - Override admin site's login form

    I'm currently trying to override the default form used in Django 1.4 when logging in to the admin site (my site uses an additional 'token' field required for users who opt in to Two Factor Authentication, and is mandatory for site staff). Django's default form does not support what I need. Currently, I've got a file in my templates/ directory called templates/admin/login.html, which seems to be correctly overriding the template used with the one I use throughout the rest of my site. Is there any way I can make this work, or is this something I am just better off 'hard coding' the HTML fields into the form for?

    I am trying to include a variable in a .ini file setting by surrounding it with curly braces, and Zend is complaining that it cannot parse it properly on Linux. It works properly on Windows, though: welcome_message = Welcome, {0}.     I'm creating an actionscript project in Flex Builder. I succeed to export from Flash a SWC file, and to use it succesfully in Flex. I have a good programming background and Flex looks very simple for me, but I have difficult times in flash. I'm trying to achieve something that might be very simple(not for me of course): I create a simple shape in Flash, convert it to symbol. Then I create a TextField. The I select both the elements and convert them to another symbol, and Export it as a movieclip in swc. In flex I want to change the value from the textfield. How should I do? I'm trying to do: var t:ExportedMC = new ExportedMC(); t....(what should I write here) As I mentioned when I open flash I feel like an elephant in a porcelain store.     I'm running into this issue only because I recently purchased an iPhone. The javascript for a picture carousel on my website (http://www.stuartmeyerphotography.com) won't execute in Safari for iPhone. I thought it worked on Mac Safari last I checked with a friend who had a Mac (a year ago), but now I need to go back and check that too to make sure it works on the Mac.
