• Violation of the DRY Principle

  I am sure there's a name for this anti-pattern somewhere; however I am not familiar enough with the anti-pattern literature to know it. Consider the following scenario: or0 is a member function in a class. For better or worse, it's heavily dependent on class member variables. Programmer A comes along and needs functionality like or0 but rather than calling or0, Programmer A copies and renames the entire class. I'm guessing that she doesn't call or0 because, as I say, it's heavily dependent on member variables for its functionality. Or maybe she's a junior programmer and doesn't know how to call it from other code. So now we've got or0 and c0 (c for copy). I can't completely fault Programmer A for this approach--we all get under tight deadlines and we hack code to get work done. Several programmers maintain or0 so it's now version orN. c0 is now version cN. Unfortunately most of the programmers that maintained the class containing or0 seemed to be completely unaware of c0--which is one of the strongest arguments I can think of for the wisdom of the DRY principle. And there may also have been independent maintainance of the code in c. Either way it appears that or0 and c0 were maintained independent of each other. And, joy and happiness, an error is occurring in cN that does not occur in orN. So I have a few questions: 1.) Is there a name for this anti-pattern? I've seen this happen so often I'd find it hard to believe this is not a named anti-pattern. 2.) I can see a few alternatives: a.) Fix orN to take a parameter that specifies the values of all the member variables it needs. Then modify cN to call orN with all of the needed parameters passed in. b.) Try to manually port fixes from orN to cN. (Mind you I don't want to do this but it is a realistic possibility.) c.) Recopy orN to cN--again, yuck but I list it for sake of completeness. d.) Try to figure out where cN is broken and then repair it independently of orN. Alternative a seems like the best fix in the long term but I doubt the customer will let me implement it. Never time or money to fix things right but always time and money to repair the same problem 40 or 50 times, right? Can anyone suggest other approaches I may not have considered? If you were in my place, which approach would you take? If there are other questions and answers here along these lines, please post links to them. I don't mind removing this question if it's a dupe but my searching hasn't turned up anything that addresses this question yet. EDIT: Thanks everyone for all the thoughtful responses. I asked about a name for the anti-pattern so I could research it further on my own. I'm surprised this particular bad coding practice doesn't seem to have a "canonical" name for it.

• Property overwrite behaviour

  I thought it worth sharing about property overwrite behaviour because i found it confusing at first in the hope of preventing some learning pain for the uninitiated with MSBuild :-)The confusion for me came because of the redundancy of using a Condition statement in a _project_ level property to test that a property has not been previously set. • Silverlight Binding with multiple collections

  We're designing some sport specific applications. In one of our views we have a gridview that is bound to an observable collection of Teams. This is pretty straight forward in terms of getting Teams bound to the GridView. <telerik:RadGridView Grid.Row="0" Grid.Column="0" x:Name="UsersGrid" ItemsSource="{Binding TeamResults}" SelectedItem="{Binding SelectedTeam, Mode=TwoWay}"> <telerik:RadGridView.Columns> <telerik:GridViewDataColumn Header="Name/Group" DataMemberBinding="{Binding TeamName}" MinWidth="150"></telerik:GridViewDataColumn> </telerik:RadGridView.Columns> </telerik:RadGridView> We use the observable collection of teams as our items source and then bind the property of TeamName to the first column. You can set the binding to mode=TwoWay, we use a dialog where we edit the selected item, so our binding here is not set to two way. The issue comes when we want to bind to a property that has another collection in it. To continue on our code from above, we have an observable collection of teams, within that collection we have a collection of KeyPeople. We get this collection using RIA Serivces with the code below. return _TeamsRepository.All().Include("KeyPerson"); Here we are getting all the teams and also including the KeyPerson entity. So when we are done with our Load we will end up with an observable collection of Teams with a navigation property / entity of KeyPerson. Within this KeyPerson entity is a list of people associated with that particular team. We want to display the head coach from this list of KeyPersons. This list currently has a list of ten or more people that are bound to this team, but we just want to display the Head Coach in the column next to team name. The issue becomes how do we bind to this included entity? I have found about three different ways to solve this issue. The way that seemed to fit us best is to utilize the features within RIA Services. We can create client side properties that will do the work for us. We will create in the client side library a partial class of Team. We will end up in our library a file that is Team.shared.cs. The code below is what we will put into our partial team class. public KeyPerson Coach        {            get            {                if (this.KeyPerson != null && this.KeyPerson.Any())                { return this.KeyPerson.Where(x => x.RelationshipType == “HeadCoach”).FirstOrDefault(); }                 return null;            }        } We will return just the person that is the Head Coach and then be able to bind that and any other additional properties that we need. <telerik:GridViewDataColumn Header="Coach" DataMemberBinding="{Binding Coach.Name}" MinWidth="150"></telerik:GridViewDataColumn> There are other ways that we could have solved this issue but we felt that creating a partial class through RIA Services best suited our needs.

• Criminals and Other Illegal Characters

  SQLTeam's favorite Slovenian blogger Mladen (b | t) had an interesting question on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/MladenPrajdic/status/347057950470307841 I liked Kendal Van Dyke's (b | t) reply: http://twitter.com/SQLDBA/status/347058908801667072 And he was right!  This is one of those pretty-useless-but-sounds-interesting propositions that I've based all my presentations on, and most of my blog posts. If you read all the replies you'll see a lot of good suggestions.  I particularly like Aaron Bertrand's (b | t) idea of going into the Unicode character set, since there are over 65,000 characters available.  But how to find an illegal character?  Detective work? I'm working on the premise that if SQL Server will reject it as a name it would throw an error.  So all we have to do is generate all Unicode characters, rename a database with that character, and catch any errors. It turns out that dynamic SQL can lend a hand here: IF DB_ID(N'a') IS NULL CREATE DATABASE [a]; DECLARE @c INT=1, @sql NVARCHAR(MAX)=N'', @err NVARCHAR(MAX)=N''; WHILE @c<65536 BEGIN BEGIN TRY SET @sql=N'alter database ' + QUOTENAME(CASE WHEN @c=1 THEN N'a' ELSE NCHAR(@c-1) END) + N' modify name=' + QUOTENAME(NCHAR(@c)); RAISERROR(N'*** Trying %d',10,1,@c) WITH NOWAIT; EXEC(@sql); SET @c+=1; END TRY BEGIN CATCH SET @err=ERROR_MESSAGE(); RAISERROR(N'Ooops - %d - %s',10,1,@c,@err) WITH NOWAIT; BREAK; END CATCH END SET @sql=N'alter database ' + QUOTENAME(NCHAR(@c-1)) + N' modify name=[a]'; EXEC(@sql); The script creates a dummy database "a" if it doesn't already exist, and only tests single characters as a database name.  If you have databases with single character names then you shouldn't run this on that server. It takes a few minutes to run, but if you do you'll see that no errors are thrown for any of the characters.  It seems that SQL Server will accept any character, no matter where they're from.  (Well, there's one, but I won't tell you which. Actually there's 2, but one of them requires some deep existential thinking.) The output is also interesting, as quite a few codes do some weird things there.  I'm pretty sure it's due to the font used in SSMS for the messages output window, not all characters are available.  If you run it using the SQLCMD utility, and use the -o switch to output to a file, and -u for Unicode output, you can open the file in Notepad or another text editor and see the whole thing. I'm not sure what character I'd recommend to answer Mladen's question.  I think the standard tab (ASCII 9) is fine.  There's also several specific separator characters in the original ASCII character set (decimal 28-31). But of all the choices available in Unicode whitespace, I think my favorite would be the Mongolian Vowel Separator.  Or maybe the zero-width space. (that'll be fun to print!)  And since this is Mladen we're talking about, here's a good selection of "intriguing" characters he could use.

• Using Private Extension Galleries in Visual Studio 2012

Microsoft releases new cool features in the form of extensions and the list of 3rd party extensions that plug into Visual Studio just keeps growing. One of the nice things about the VSIX extensions is how they are deployed. Microsoft hosts a public Visual Studio Gallery where you can upload extensions and make them available to the rest of the community. Visual Studio checks for updates to the installed extensions when you start Visual Studio, and installing/updating the extensions is fast since it is only a matter of extracting the files within the VSIX package to the local extension folder. But for custom, enterprise-specific extensions, you don’t want to publish them online to the whole world, but you still want an easy way to distribute them to your developers and partners. This is where Private Extension Galleries come into play. In Visual Studio 2012, it is now possible to add custom extensions galleries that can point to any URL, as long as that URL returns the expected content of course (see below).Registering a new gallery in Visual Studio is easy, but there is very little documentation on how to actually host the gallery. Visual Studio galleries uses Atom Feed XML as the protocol for delivering new and updated versions of the extensions. This MSDN page describes how to create a static XML file that returns the information about your extensions. This approach works, but require manual updates of that file every time you want to deploy an update of the extension. Wouldn’t it be nice with a web service that takes care of this for you, that just lets you drop a new version of your VSIX file and have it automatically detect the new version and produce the correct Atom Feed XML? Well search no more, this is exactly what the Inmeta Visual Studio Gallery Service does for you :-) Here you can see that in addition to the standard Online galleries there is an Inmeta Gallery that contains two extensions (our WIX templates and our custom TFS Checkin Policies). These can be installed/updated i the same way as extensions from the public Visual Studio Gallery. Installing the Service Download the installler (Inmeta.VSGalleryService.Install.msi) for the service and run it. The installation is straight forward, just select web site, application pool and (optional) a virtual directory where you want to install the service.   Note: If you want to run it in the web site root, just leave the application name blank Press Next and finish the installer. Open web.config in a text editor and locate the the <applicationSettings> element Edit the following setting values: FeedTitle This is the name that is shown if you browse to the service using a browser. Not used by Visual Studio BaseURI When Visual Studio downloads the extension, it will be given this URI + the name of the extension that you selected. This value should be on the following format: http://SERVER/[VDIR]/gallery/extension/ VSIXAbsolutePath This is the path where you will deploy your extensions. This can be a local folder or a remote share. You just need to make sure that the application pool identity account has read permissions in this folder Save web.config to finish the installation Open a browser and enter the URL to the service. It should show an empty Feed page:   Adding the Private Gallery in Visual Studio 2012 Now you need to add the gallery in Visual Studio. This is very easy and is done as follows: Go to Tools –> Options and select Environment –> Extensions and Updates Press Add to add a new gallery Enter a descriptive name, and add the URL that points to the web site/virtual directory where you installed the service in the previous step   Press OK to save the settings. While I'm aware that first-chance exceptions are not a problem in and of themselves, this does cause some problems for me: I often have the debugger set to "break on exceptions", as I'm writing WPF apps, and otherwise all exceptions end up getting converted to a DispatcherUnhandledException, and all the actual information you want is lost. WPF sucks like that. As soon as I hit any code that's using dynamic, the debug output log becomes fairly useless. All the useful trace lines that I care about get hidden amongst all the useless RuntimeBinderExceptions Is there any way I can turn this off, or is the RuntimeBinder unfortunately just built like that? • Why are some of my view not aligned correctly at the bottom of my relative layout?

  I have problems getting some of my views aligned in a relative layout that I use inside a row of my listview. Here is a screenshot from the layout builder in Eclipse, this is what I think it should look like: The next image is from the emulator. Now the TestTestTest View is at the top and covers the name and distance Textviews. • Configuring correct port for Oozie (invoking PIG script) in Cloudera Hue

  I am new to CDH4 Oozie workflow editor. While trying to invoke a pig script from Oozie workflow editor, i am getting the following error. HadoopAccessorException: E0900: Jobtracker [mymachine:8032] not allowed, not in Oozies whitelist It looks like Oozie is submitting the job to Yarn port (8032). I want it to submit to 8021 (MR jobtracker) port. Can someone help me in identify where to set the job tracker URL or port so that oozie picks up the correct one (using Hue or Cloudera manager). Previously I tried the following but none of them helped Modfied workflow.xml file /user/hue/oozie/workspaces/../workflow.xml file. However it gets overwritten when I submit the job from workflow editor. In cloudera Manager -- oozie -- configuration --Oozie Server (advanced) -- Oozie Server Configuration Safety Valve for oozie-site.xml property I set the following- <property> <name>oozie.service.HadoopAccessorService.nameNode.whitelist</name> <value>mymachine:8020</value> oozie.service.HadoopAccessorService.jobTracker.whitelist mymachine:8021 and restarted the oozie service. 3. Tried to override 'jobTracker' property while configuring the pig task. This appears as follows in the workflow file however it doesn't take effect (or doesn't override) and still uses 8032 port. <global> <configuration> <property> <name>jobTracker</name> <value>mymachine:8021</value> </property> </configuration> </global> I am using CDH4 version.   In my application users can enter commands that are executed on the server. The results are added to a session object. I then stuff the session object into ViewData and add it to a textarea. When done with a standard HTML form whitespace is preserved. However, when I swap this out for an ajax form (Ajax.BeginForm) and return the result as ContentResult, the whitespace is removed.   I am trying to test a simple WCF tcp.net client/server app. The WCF service is being hosted on Windows 7 IIS. I have enabled TCP.net in IIS. I granted liberal security privileges to service app by configuring an app pool with admin rights and set the IIS service application to run in the context. I enabled tracing on the service app to troubleshoot. Whenever I run a simple method call against the service from the WCF client app, I get the following exception: "Stream Security is required at http://www.w3.org/2005/08/addressing/anonymous, but no security context was negotiated. This is likely caused by the remote endpoint missing a StreamSecurityBindingElement from its binding."   Hello, I have been using pil for the first time today. And I wanted to resize an image assuming it was larger than 800x600 and also create a thumbnail. I could do either of these tasks separately but not together in one method (I am doing a custom save method in django admin). This returns a "cannot identify image file" error message. The error is on the line "image = Image.open(self.photo)" after "#if image is size is greatet than 800 x 600 then resize image." I thought this may be because the image is already open, but if i remove the line I still get issues. So I thought I could try closing after creating a thumbnail and then reopening. But I couldn't find a close method.... Anyway, after adding the UseNetSerializer that error went away, yet now I'm just not getting anything. Oh PS. if I add all the commented out List items, I still retrieve an entry from the DB, but also still not receive anything on the client. if I remove the [UseNetDataContractSerializer] I get the following error(s) in the svclog : WARNING: Description Faulted System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServerSessionPreambleConnectionReader+ServerFramingDuplexSessionChannel WARNING: Description Faulted System.ServiceModel.Channels.ServiceChannel ERROR: Initializing[eCows.Data.Models.Client#3]-failed to lazily initialize a collection of role: eCows.Data.Models.Client.Addresses, no session or session was closed ... ERROR: Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'ILogbookManager' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element. If I add a .Not.LazyLoad to the List mapping items, I'm back at not receiving errors, but also not receiving any client information.. Sigh! Please, if anyone can help with this I'd be extremely grateful. I'm probably just missing something small.. but... what is it :) hehe. Thanks in advance! Neville

  I'm having a problem with getting my radio buttons laid out (and checkboxes) correctly in IE8 .. Firefox, Chrome, Opera all working however ..
