• Shrink Partition on Production Server

  SO our production server was only setup with one large partition. I have setup a standby server and properly partitioned it. Now the boss wants the production environment's partition shrunk. It is an HP DL380 G5 We have 4 hot swap drives in a raid 5. How best should I go about doing this. Seems like a bad idea to me. Should I use windows or HP to do the partitioning? What should I be aware of in a production environment? The idea is to put the site (Inetpub) on a separate partition instead of the C: drive. How much downtime should I expect? Is this a terrible idea? Anything else I have missed?

  C4C, in Kansas City, is always a fun event. At points it gets to be a pressure cooker as you zone in trying to crank out some fantastic code in just a few hours, but it is always fun. A great challenge of your skill as a software developer and for a good cause. This year my team helped The United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Kansas City organization to add online job applications and a database for tracking internal training. I keep finding that there is one key rule to pulling off a successful C4C weekend project, and that is “Keep It Simple”. Each time you want to add that one cool little feature you have to ask yourself.. Is it really necessary? and Do I have time for that? And if you are going to learn something new you should ask yourself if you’re really going to be able to learn that AND finish the project in the given time. Sometimes the less elegant code is the better code if it works. That said… You get a great amount of freedom to build the solution the way you want. Typically, the software we build for the charities will save them a lot of money and time and make their jobs easier. You are able to build the software you know you are capable of creating from your own ideas. I highly recommend any developers in the area to signup next year and show off your skills. I know I will!

• Generic Repository with SQLite and SQL Compact Databases

  I am creating a project that has a mobile app (Xamarin.Android) using a SQLite database and a WPF application (Code First Entity Framework 5) using a SQL Compact database. This project will even eventually have a SQL Server database as well. Because of this I am trying to create a generic repository, so that I can pass in the correct context depending on which application is making the request. The issue I ran into is my DataContext for the SQL Compact database inherits from DbContext and the SQLite database inherits from SQLiteConnection. What is the best way to make this generic, so that it doesn't matter what kind of database is on the back end? • cloud/grid computing

  Hi guys. I'm appologizing in advance to the guys who will tell me this isn't a tech/server/IT issue! But I've been beating my head around this for a couple of days now. I'm trying figure out who to talk to, or which company I can approach to try to see if there are Grid/Cloud Computing companies who have programs setup to deal with colleges. I'm dealing with a compsci course, and we're looking at a few projects that would require a great deal of computing/computational resources. But in calling different companies (HP/Rackspace/etc..) I'm either not getting through to the right depts, or to the right people, or the companies just aren't setup for this. There are plenty of companies who have discounts for desktop software/hardware, but who in the biz deals with discounts/offerings for Cloud/Grid Computing solutions?? Any thoughts/pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -tom

• QoS, Squid, Virgin superhub

  I'm a student and have just moved into a house of 6. We've setup 100mb broadband with Virgin and get quite good speeds on it so we're really pleased. However, as there are 6 of us, who all like to stream/game/download etc I was looking at setting up QoS to ensure speeds were fair/equal etc. I looked into it and found out that the Virgin Superhub can't do it out of the box, so my next option is to setup squid proxy on my machine (always on) to act as at transparent proxy and provide QoS etc. However, I'm not really sure how to do this and had a look on the Internet but couldn't see any guides as such! I was wondering if someone could give me some more and perhaps provider a summary of the steps involved - and let me know if this is possible with the SuperHub etc. Thanks, Dave

• Microsoft Terminology: .NET C++ vs. traditional C++

  I've recently been working with a team that's using both .NET C++ and pre-.NET C++. I fully understand the technical differences between the two technologies. However, I sometimes feel like I'm floundering when it comes to the terminology used to differentiate the two. Example: Say we have two projects: ProjectA contains "C++" code that builds a .NET assembly DLL. ProjectB contains Visual C++ code that builds a traditional native Windows DLL. What is the best way to succinctly and terminologically draw a distinction between the two projects? Again, I'm not asking for an in-depth technical description of the differences between the two technologies. I'm just looking for names and labels. This is how, today, I might try to make the distinction when talking to someone: "ProjectA is a managed .NET C++ project" and "ProjectB is an unmanaged native C++ DLL project." However I am not at all certain that this terminology is ideal, or even correct. Please describe what you feel the ideal language to use in this situation (or similar situations) might be. Feel free to motivate your answer.

One of the reason that I set it directly, is that in the code the setters are not final and they could be overridden. If the right way is to set it directly and I want to make sure that the name filed is not null always. Should I provide two checks, one in the constructor and one in the setter. I read in effective java that I should use NullPointerException for null parameters. Should I use IllegalArgumentException for other checks, like id in the example.

• Advice for Setting up an On-Call Team

  I'm leading a largish development team (~35 developers). We are doing primarily Web Development work on a number of sites. Historically the knowledge on the teams has been pretty siloed. If you worked on Site A you will know how to troubleshoot it, but you would not be a lot of help on Site B. We also have a few cross-cutting concerns, i.e. common components used between sites which require specialized knowledge to troubleshoot. With all this in mind, I'm trying to understand the best way to setup an on-call team. This would be a team of programmers who would be available to deal with out-of-hours emergency issues occasionally (say one call every 2 weeks). They may be required to deploy emergency fixes. Part of me is saying we can't have a big on-call team with shallow knowledge, instead we need a smaller team with deep knowledge who can expect to be on-call more often and remunerated as such. Does anyone have any suggestions based on experience on how to setup this team? Thanks in advance.

  How can a non-technical person learn to write specs for small projects? A friend of mine is trying to outsource some development on a statistics project. In particular, he does a lot of work in excel, and wants to outsource the creation of scripts to do what he now does by hand. However, my friend is extremely non-technical. He is poor at writing technical specs. When he does write a spec, it is written the way you would describe doing something in excel (go to this cell and then copy the value to that cell). It is also overly verbose, and does examples several times. I'm not sure if he properly describes corner cases. The first project he outsourced was a failure. I think he overdescribed some details, but underdescribed corner cases. That and/or the coder he hired didn't think through the corner cases and ask appropriate questions. I'm not sure. I got on IM with him and it took me half an hour to dig out a description that should have taken five minutes or less to describe. I wrote the scripts for him at the end, but didn't examine why his process with the coder failed. He has asked me for help. However, I refuse to get involved, because taking his spec and translating it into clear requirements is 10x more work than executing on a clearly written spec. What is the right way for him to learn? Are there resources he could use? Are there ways he can learn from small, low-pressure practice projects with coders? Most of his scripts are statistical and data processing oriented. e.g. take this column and run an average over it. Remove these rows under these conditions. So the challenge is different than spec'ing a web app.

  MySQL cluster: Error after 1 data node is shutdown and started again. We have configured MySQL cluster(version 7.1) with 2 sql/data nodes. We are using table space instead of in-memory clustering. The setup was working fine. So to test the setup I shutdown one data node, updated a table and and again stated the stopped node. Its giving this error and not starting. Any ideas ? Forced node shutdown completed. Occured during startphase 5. Caused by error 2306: 'Pointer too large(Internal error, programming error or missing error message, please report a bug). Temporary error, restart node'.

• Can I re-license Academic Free License code under 2-Clause BSD / ITC?

  I want to fork a piece of code licensed under the Academic Free License. For the project, it would be preferable to re-license it under the ISC License or the 2-Clause BSD license, which are equivalent. I understand that the AFL grants me things such as limitation of liability, but licensing consistency is much more important to the project, especially since we're talking about just 800 lines of code, a quarter of which I've modified in some way. And it's very important for me to give these changes back to the community, given the fact that this is software relevant to security - I need the public scrutiny that I'll get by creating a public fork. In short: At the top of the file I want to say this, or something like it: # Licensed under the Academic Free License, version 3 # Copyright (C) 2009 Original Author # Licensed under the ISC License # Copyright (C) 2012 Stefano Palazzo # Copyright (C) 2012 Company Am I allowed to do this?   Hi, I'm building a NAS using Openfiler2.3 (from 32-bit ISO), first of all I want to experiment it on VM first before going out and buy the harddrives needed. I created 5 virtual drives on VMware, sda is 2GB and the rest 1GB each (sdb to sde). I left sda blank and want to setup a RAID 10 disk using sdb, sdc, sdd and sde, 4 RAID partitions are setup successfully, but when I try to create a RAID device the only option for RAID level is 1, 0, 5 and 6. RAID 10 is not there! Can someone let me know what have I missed, please? TIA.

• New Visual Studio 2010 Extension - Collapse Solution

  If your team has recently upgraded to Visual Studio 2010, take a second to check out the new Extension Manager. You can use it to browse through or install tons of tools, controls, or templates from the Visual Studio Gallery. My friend, Cory Cissell, and I recently teamed up and created an extension of our own called "Collapse Solution". It adds an option called Collapse Solution to the context menu of the solution node in the solution explorer. It also adds an option called Collapse Project to the context menu of each project node in the solution explorer. When that option is clicked, it will walk through the solution explorer tree and collapse any expanded child nodes in that section (projects, folders, code behind files, designer files, etc.). I use to have an add-in that did this in Visual Studio 2008 but it wasn't compatible when we upgraded to 2010 so we decided to write our own. The old tool was also packaged with a bunch of other junk that we didn't need so we figured it would be a much cleaner tool if it was broken off into its own extension. There's no need to install extra tools if you don't really need them. • IIS in VirtualBox serving files from shared Ubuntu folder

  Here's the problem: I want to use Ubuntu. But I need to develop ASP.NET (MVC) sites. So I setup VirtualBox with Win2003 and IIS6. But I would prefer my working files to be located in my Ubuntu home folder. So I setup shared folder in VirtualBox and make IIS6 virtual directory work from there. The problem is, IIS6 can't do this. Whatever I try (mapped drive, network uri path) I get different IIS errors: can't access folder (for mapped drive), can't monitor file system changes (\vboxsvr share path), and so on. Is there a way for IIS6 in virtual machine to configure virtual application folder to be on host machine (Ubuntu) - be it shared folder, mapped drive, smb share, or whatever?

  The condition: I'm running on windows 7, I'm using a usb broad band for my computer, then my computer is connected to the router tp-link tl-wr340g (in this sense my computer is the internet source since my router has no usb port for this type of broad band). I set the broad band to have internet sharing. I got 3-4 client connected through the router. The problem is whenever a client is using the internet, other clients including me don't have internet connection, additionally, If I have the internet access other clients don't have internet access. In my setup in windows XP (bridging the broad band and the router network) it works perfectly fine, every one has simultaneous internet. To clarify, how can I have all clients including me have internet connection simultaneously in my windows 7 OS? //Additionally, the create "network bridge" setup is missing, from this link the "Bridge Connection is missing", how can I fix that?

• Entity Framework with large systems - how to divide models?

  I'm working with a SQL Server database with 1000+ tables, another few hundred views, and several thousand stored procedures. We are looking to start using Entity Framework for our newer projects, and we are working on our strategy for doing so. The thing I'm hung up on is how best to split the tables into different models (EDMX or DbContext if we go code first). I can think of a few strategies right off the bat: Split by schema We have our tables split across probably a dozen schemas. We could do one model per schema. This isn't perfect, though, because dbo still ends up being very large, with 500+ tables / views. Another problem is that certain units of work will end up having to do transactions that span multiple models, which adds to complexity, although I assume EF makes this fairly straightforward. Split by intent Instead of worrying about schemas, split the models by intent. So we'll have different models for each application, or project, or module, or screen, depending on how granular we want to get. The problem I see with this is that there are certain tables that inevitably have to be used in every case, such as User or AuditHistory. Do we add those to every model (violates DRY I think), or are those in a separate model that is used by every project? Don't split at all - one giant model This is obviously simple from a development perspective but from my research and my intuition this seems like it could perform terribly, both at design time, compile time, and possibly run time. What is the best practice for using EF against such a large database? Specifically what strategies do people use in designing models against this volume of DB objects? Are there options that I'm not thinking of that work better than what I have above? Also, is this a problem in other ORMs such as NHibernate? If so have they come up with any better solutions than EF?
