  • Including email, IMs, configs, etc. in documentation or notes

    The shop I work in is pretty laid-back. We're on a documentation kick, only because historically we've been very bad with it. We do a lot of our brainstorming in face-to-face meetings, and also do a lot of communication via IM in addition to email. While I'm usually pretty good about documentation and keeping copious lab notes, I just finished a build of a host and spent hours searching through IMs, emails, files on my workstation, etc. to pull out anything I missed in my lab notes, which formed a large amount of the basis for the internal documentation. Does anyone have any thoughts on, aside from manually saving things to a project directory, managing various data sources (especially email and IM) and tracking them on project basis? Ideally, I'd like an easy way to put copies of emails, IM logs, etc. into a project-specific directory on my workstation and then just have a cron job that syncs that up with a shared folder. This isn't really a candidate for anything more advanced, as the bulk of the data will be copies of configs, code, etc. Here are the big restrictions: Email is via a centralized Zimbra install, so nothing can happen server-side. My workstation is Linux. Aside from writing Pidgin and Thunderbird plugins that let me tag chats and emails as belonging to a project, and then copy them to the appropriate place... any thoughts?   • Cannot receive email outside domain with Microsoft Exchange

    This morning we couldn't receive email from outside our company's domain (domain.com.au), but we can send email to outside (e.g hotmail, gmail, yahoo). When I tried to send email to my work email address using my gmail account, I received this message Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 Unable to relay for [email protected] (state 14). I tried using telnet to send email, and it works. But still I couldn't figure out why I can't receive email from outside. I'm not sure if I provided enough info. I'll try to provide as much info as needed to help me solve the problem. Thanks

  • Best practise to send mass email within application (ASP.NET MVC 2, C#)?

    Whats the best way to implement mass email sending feature within web app? Two major cases: Email messages for separate registered users depending on their activities (just sending short reminders to user for ex about new posts in his created topic) "Send email for all registered users" functionality, it will be nice to have feature for system administrator to send some messages for all registered users. Of course adding all emails to recipient isn't the way we can go, because email addresses for each user are anonimous. As i understand for case nr1 there is no problem just create some email message via System.Net.Mail by creating new mail message and sending it... but what about case nr 2??? i guess smth like this: foreach(var emailAddress in emailAddresses) { MailMessage mail = new MailMessage(); mail.From = new MailAddress("[email protected]"); mail.To.Add(emailAddress); mail.Subject = "test"; mail.Body = "test"; SmtpClient smtp = new SmtpClient("smtp.gmail.com", 587); smtp.Send(mail); } isn't the good way :) so the question is what is the best way to achieve this ? btw we have no possiblity to deploy some serive for email sending, this should be integrated into web application.

  • HSSFS Part 2.1 - Parsing @@VERSION

    For Part 2 of the Handy SQL Server Function Series I decided to tackle parsing useful information from the @@VERSION function, because I am an idiot.  It turns out I was confused about CHARINDEX() vs. PATINDEX() and it pretty much invalidated my original solution.  All is not lost though, this mistake turned out to be informative for me, and hopefully for you. Referring back to the "Version" view in the prelude I started with the following query to extract the version number: SELECT DISTINCT SQLVersion, SUBSTRING(VersionString,PATINDEX('%-%',VersionString)+2, 12) VerNum FROM VERSION I used PATINDEX() to find the first hyphen "-" character in the string, since the version number appears 2 positions after it, and got these results: SQLVersion VerNum ----------- ------------ 2000 8.00.2055 (I 2005 9.00.3080.00 2005 9.00.4053.00 2008 10.50.1600.1 As you can see it was good enough for most of the values, but not for the SQL 2000 @@VERSION.  You'll notice it has only 3 version sections/octets where the others have 4, and the SUBSTRING() grabbed the non-numeric characters after.  To properly parse the version number will require a non-fixed value for the 3rd parameter of SUBSTRING(), which is the number of characters to extract. The best value is the position of the first space to occur after the version number (VN), the trick is to figure out how to find it.  Here's where my confusion about PATINDEX() came about.  The CHARINDEX() function has a handy optional 3rd parameter: CHARINDEX (expression1 ,expression2 [ ,start_location ] ) While PATINDEX(): PATINDEX ('%pattern%',expression ) Does not.  I had expected to use PATINDEX() to start searching for a space AFTER the position of the VN, but it doesn't work that way.  Since there are plenty of spaces before the VN, I thought I'd try PATINDEX() on another character that doesn't appear before, and tried "(": SELECT SQLVersion, SUBSTRING(VersionString,PATINDEX('%-%',VersionString)+2, PATINDEX('%(%',VersionString)) FROM VERSION Unfortunately this messes up the length calculation and yields: SQLVersion VerNum ----------- --------------------------- 2000 8.00.2055 (Intel X86) Dec 16 2008 19:4 2005 9.00.3080.00 (Intel X86) Sep 6 2009 01: 2005 9.00.4053.00 (Intel X86) May 26 2009 14: 2008 10.50.1600.1 (Intel X86) Apr 2008 10.50.1600.1 (X64) Apr 2 20 Yuck.  The problem is that PATINDEX() returns position, and SUBSTRING() needs length, so I have to subtract the VN starting position: SELECT SQLVersion, SUBSTRING(VersionString,PATINDEX('%-%',VersionString)+2, PATINDEX('%(%',VersionString)-PATINDEX('%-%',VersionString)) VerNum FROM VERSION And the results are: SQLVersion VerNum ----------- -------------------------------------------------------- 2000 8.00.2055 (I 2005 9.00.4053.00 (I Msg 537, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Invalid length parameter passed to the LEFT or SUBSTRING function. Ummmm, whoops.  Turns out SQL Server 2008 R2 includes "(RTM)" before the VN, and that causes the length to turn negative. So now that that blew up, I started to think about matching digit and dot (.) patterns.  Sadly, a quick look at the first set of results will quickly scuttle that idea, since different versions have different digit patterns and lengths. At this point (which took far longer than I wanted) I decided to cut my losses and redo the query using CHARINDEX(), which I'll cover in Part 2.2.  So to do a little post-mortem on this technique: PATINDEX() doesn't have the flexibility to match the digit pattern of the version number; PATINDEX() doesn't have a "start" parameter like CHARINDEX(), that allows us to skip over parts of the string; The SUBSTRING() expression is getting pretty complicated for this relatively simple task! This doesn't mean that PATINDEX() isn't useful, it's just not a good fit for this particular problem.  I'll include a version in the next post that extracts the version number properly.   • How to make a spam tester

    In my project I need to make a spam tester to check the spam score of the mails prepared to be sent. When I searched, I found Spam Assassin, which they say is used as sapm filters in many mail servers. Can I create a spam tester using Spam Assassin? Another option I found is one Litmus API, which is a paid service. Is there any options other than these two? Freeware is more preferred. My project is a J2EE web application using Spring.

    I know i could program it myself but maybe there is a simple (thats the keyword) package. I like to add a box, snippet, form or page to my site for users to input their email address. Then i'd like it to automatically send email saying you have successfully subscribe. I'd want an unsubscribe link and i would be using smtp on google apps. I would like to send email with html so i can have a simple sentence with a complex link such as this I dont know if i'll get marked as spam if i try to send everyone an email at once? so i'd like the software to manage it. Also i'd like to get the emails in a simple format like csv. Is there a simple app that does this? if not i can write a simple form which does a simple insert (or delete when unsubscribing) and write a 200-300line app to send my emails out for me.

  • What is wrong with this mail header text?

    The following $header is being sent via PHP's mail($to,$subject,$content,$header) command. The mail arrives and appears to have an attachment. But the mail text is empty as is the file. I think this has something to do with line spacing but I can't see the problem. I have tried putting the contents (between the boundaries) in $contents rather than appending it to $header. It doesn't make a difference. Any thoughts?   • How should I safely send bulk mail? [closed]

    First of all, we have a large software system we've developed and have a number of clients using it in their own environment. Each of them is responsible for using their own equipment and resources, we don't provide any services to share with them. We have introduced an automated email system which sends emails automatically via SMTP. Usually, it only sends around 10-20 emails a day, but it's very possible to send bulk email up to thousands of people in a single day. This of course requires a big haul of work, which isn't necessarily the problem. The issue arises when it comes to the SMTP server we're using. An email server is issued a number of relays a day, which is paid for. This isn't really necessarily the issue either. The risk is getting the email server blacklisted. It's inevitable, and we need to carefully take all this into consideration. As far as I can see, the ideal setup would be to have at least 50 IP addresses on multiple servers, each of which hosts its own SMTP server. When sending bulk email, it will divide them up across these servers, and each one will process its own queue. If one of those IP's gets blacklisted, it will be decommissioned and a new IP will replace it. Is there a better way that doesn't require us to invest in a large handful of servers? Perhaps a third party service which is meant exactly for this?

    I have a hosted website using a free hosting service, I received an email this afternoon saying that I have been suspended because my account has been compromised. Basically, someone is using my email account to mass send spam. It's a simple wordpress install, at some point recently my host went down and there was a fresh install of wordpress with default admin accounts, I have a feeling it could be something to do with this. My question is, even though I've changed all my passwords it's all still happening, is there annywhere in paticular this script would be stored on my host. I really can't deal with having my hosting account suspended and my email account sending all this spam.

  • Best way to setup multiple sites' emails in my Gmail

    I've a dozen sites and I want all of their emails come to my one gmail id and I want to reply centrally from Gmail only. I've also added all of those emails in "send email as:" list in Gmail. I could add email forwarders in my Cpanel but in that case I'll not be able to send email whose inboxes haven't been created( for example [email protected]). If I create email account then I'd receive emails in my inbox as well as forwared by the forwarder( to my gmail id). Otherwise I can setup Gmail for my domain. But for a dozen emails I'm not sure if that'd be fine. I see in http://www.google.com/enterprise/apps/business/pricing.html that for up to 10 emails it is free. But then to send email from webhosting the php code will need SMTP login details and leaving my important gmail account details in my webhosting account is very risky given my sites have been compromised twice. What is the best way to centralize all my emails so that I can read/reply/search from single place?

  • Perl module for parsing natural language time duration specifications (similar to the "at" command)?

    I'm writing a perl script that takes a "duration" option, and I'd like to be able to specify this duration in a fairly flexible manner, as opposed to only taking a single unit (e.g. number of seconds). The UNIX at command implements this kind of behavior, by allowing specifications such as "now + 3 hours + 2 days". For my program, the "now" part is implied, so I just want to parse the stuff after the plus sign. (Note: the at command also parses exact date specifications, but I only want to parse durations.) Is there a perl module for parsing duration specifications like this? I don't need the exact syntax accepted by at, just any reasonable syntax for specifying time durations. Edit: Basically, I want something like DateTime::Format::Flexible for durations instead of dates.

  • Does this e-mail-regex exclude valid addresses?

    I tried to create a regular expression which catches all RFC-valid addresses but it's ok if some false-positives come through (though hopefully not so many). This is waht I came up so far: /^\b\S+@\S+\.[^\s@]{2,}\b$/ Is there any RFC-valid address which doesn't match against this expression or do you have any suggestions to improve it? I don't mind the false positives but I would be glad if you show me a few, too.

  • How to set up Windows server 2008 to receive email?

    First off apologies, I'm from a medical background not a networking one, but I've got roped into setting up a windows 2008 server. So far web server running, fixed IP address assigned (within a large private network of the National Health Service in the UK if that makes any difference) and the network team have assigned a DNS entry for me which works, so the server can be addressed as nww.myserver.nhs.uk I've only got ports open on the router for 80 and 443 (http and https) at the moment, so presume I need a different port to enable email services. My need is to be able to accept an email to the domain name like [email protected] in order to pick up a confirmation mail from an SSL issuer (Comodo) I guess to confirm that I control the domain. After that I don't actually need mail services on the server. I see lots of stuff about setting up SMTP services but thought that was about mail out and re-routing, but how do you get the server to "listen" for mail to the domain (assuming I open port xyz or whatever it is) ?

He had been using his university email address for professional correspondence, when he found out that the university had permanently lost 16 business-related emails in their spam filter (with no apology, notification, or compensation). What I am looking for now is an email provider (preferably with Exchange, but not required) with very high reliability and a SLA that is basically an insurance policy. I have looked at Google Apps's SLA, but this will not suit. I am looking for a provider who will take $X per month in registration fees, and will: Alert me when there is any downtime. Promptly fix the issue Pay me a fee ($Y) whenever there is downtime. I want a significant, contractual reason for them to be diligent in their service. Free service for me is not enough.
