  In the last three month I was experiencing that my internet connection started to get very slow and websites had long time to load. The first thing I made was an ping to www.google.com which showed that I was loosing pakets. Here some of the results: 64 bytes from 74.125.39.103: icmp_seq=2909 ttl=53 time=48.222 ms Request timeout for icmp_seq 2910 Request timeout for icmp_seq 2911 64 bytes from 74.125.39.103: icmp_seq=2912 ttl=53 time=44.372 ms Days later I had to reset my router because it wasn't able to establish a correct network connection. It was after the reset when things worked again for some days. But later the same network timeouts started to happen again. I would like to know how I can analyze the problem to get to the source which is causing this timeouts. Which steps do you take to circle in this Problem? • Git: Fixing a bug affecting two branches

  I'm basing my Git repo on http://nvie.com/posts/a-successful-git-branching-model/ and was wondering what happens if you have this situation: Say I'm developing on two feature branches A and B, and B requires code from A. The X node introduces an error in feature A which affects branch B, but this is not detected at node Y where feature A and B were merged and testing was conducted before branching out again and working on the next iteration. As a result, the bug is found at node Z by the people working on feature B. At this stage it's decided that a bugfix is needed. This fix should be applied to both features, since the people working on feature A also need the bug fixed, since its part of their feature. Should a bugfix branch be created from the latest feature A node (the one branching from node Y) and then merged with feature A? After which both features are merged into develop again and tested before branching out? The problem with this is that it requires both branches to merge to fix the issue. Since feature B doesn't touch code in feature A, is there a way to change the history at node Y by implementing the fix and still allowing the feature B branch to remain unmerged yet have the fixed code from feature A? • Session timeout is very short on IIS 7.5

  I have a website on windows server 2008 and iis 7 on a VPS. It works fine and has no problems, but after moving it to a shared hosting server with IIS 7.5, the session is lost after 4 or 5 clicks (like 30 secs) and I have to login again and again. The two sites are same, I copied the site from the VPS exactly as-is to the shared hosting server. The session timeouts in both web.config files are same. On the shared hosting server I don't have access to IIS manager to manipulate the settings. All I have is Plesk Control Panel 9.5 and the website's web.config file. What could be causing this to happen?

• Why might login failures cause SQL 2005 to dump and ditch?

  Our SQL 2005 server began timing out and finally stopped responding on Oct 26th. The application logs showed a ton of 17883 events leading up to a reboot. After the reboot everything was fine but we were still scratching our heads. Fast forward 6 days... it happened again. Then again 2 days later. The last night. Today it has happened three times to far. The timeline is fairly predictable when it happens: Trans log backups. Login failure for "user2". Minidump Another minidump for the scheduler Repeated 17883 events. Server fails little by little until it won't accept any requests. Reboot is all that gets us going again (a band-aid) Interesting, though, is that the server box itself doesn't seem to have any problems. CPU usage is normal. Network connectivity is fine. We can remote in and look at logs. Management studio does eventually bog down, though. Today, for the first time, we tried stopping services instead of a reboot. All services stopped on their own except for the SQL Server service. We finally did an "end task" on that one and were able to bring everything back up. It worked fine for about 30 minutes until we started seeing timeouts and 17883's again. This time, probably because we didn't reboot all the way, we saw a bunch of 844 events mixed in with the 17883's. Our entire tech team here is scratching heads... some ideas we're kicking around: MS Cumulative Update hit around the same time as when we first had a problem. Since then, we've rolled it back. Maybe it didn't rollback all the way. The situation looks and feels like an unhandled "stack overflow" (no relation) in that it starts small and compounds over time. Problem with this is that there isn't significant CPU usage. At any rate, we're not ruling SQL 2005 bug out at all. Maybe we added one too many import processes and have reached our limit on this box. (hard to believe). Looking at SQLDUMP0151.log at the time of one of the crashes. There are some "login failures" and then there are two stack dumps. 1st a normal stack dump, 2nd for a scheduler dump. • Loss of iPod nano connection via VirtualBox and iTunes

  I use VirtualBox 4.12 with Ubuntu 12.04, and up until a couple of days ago I was able to sync my iPod nano, my iPod Classic and my iPad via Windows XP and iTunes. A few days ago, when I connected the iPod nano, iTunes told me it was in recovery and I'd have to Restore it. I did this, but when it started up again I was told it was still in recovery. I went through this loop a few times, and then I got it to work again, and synched successfully. Since then, I have been unable to sync my iPod nano, although both iPod Classic and iPad work fine. I have successfully synched the iPod on a laptop with Windows XP since then, but each time I connect it through VirtualBox I get the same error message. I have tried disabling the iPod service in (the VirtualBox version of) Windows, and find that the iPod isn't being mounted as a disc drive, which is what happens in Ubuntu, and on my Windows XP laptop. I've tried changing USB leads, and I've also booted Windows XP on my Ubuntu machine, and here iTunes recognises the iPod nano. As far as I know, I made no changes to the configuration of VirtualBox between the time it was synching satisfactorily and the time it failed. I don't think iTunes is at fault here, as the same version of iTunes syncs with the iPod nano on two different computers running Windows XP - I think it may be the way XP running in VirtualBox handles the mounting of the iPod. Any suggestions?

  We were able to setup mysql master-slave replication with the following version on both master/slave: mysqld Ver 5.5.28-29.1-log for Linux on x86_64 (Percona Server (GPL), Release 29.1) One day, we noticed that replication has stopped, we tried skipping over the entries that caused the replication errors. The errors persisted so we decided to skip replication for the 4 problematic tables. The slave has now caught up with the master except for the 4 tables. What is the best way to enable replication again for the 4 tables? This is what I have in mind but I don't know if it will work: 1) Modify slave config to enable replication again for the 4 tables 2) stop slave replication 3) for each of the 4 tables, use pt-table-sync --execute --verbose --print --sync-to-master h=localhost,D=mydb,t=mytable 4) restart slave database to reload replication configuration 5) start slave replication

• Windows Live Family Safety Service keeps closing Start Menu

  Got my kids a new Toshiba Laptop for Christmas. I was setting it all up for them so it would be ready to go. Tonight I installed Windows Live Family Safety Parental Controls. In the process of testing I discovered that on all the accounts the Start Menu closes automatically within 3 seconds (or less) of opening. It seems that it happens every 3 seconds, so sometimes it is immediate, and if I open it again then it will stay open for a full 3 seconds. This of course is rather annoying, and I need to wrap it up so it is ready to go under the tree. I disabled the Windows Live Family Safety Service, and that fixed it. Enable it again and the behavior returns. Is this a feature of the service? Can I disable that feature and keep the other features?

• SMTP authentication error using PHPMailer

  I am using PHPMailer to send a basic form to an email address but I get the following error: SMTP Error: Could not authenticate. Message could not be sent. Mailer Error: SMTP Error: Could not authenticate. SMTP server error: VXNlcm5hbWU6 The weird thing is that if I try to send it again, IT WORKS! Every time I submit the form after that first error it works. But if I leave it for a few minutes and then try again I get the same error again. The username and password have to be right as sometimes it works fine. • Samsung printer (ML-1640) margin problem

  I just got a new laser printer, Samsung ML-1640, and it has once again confirmed my experience that Samsung printers suck badly. The printer prints fine, except that the top margin is set at random, usually very small, cutting text on the top of page off. I tried updating firmware, getting new drivers, but nothing helped. I tried changing paper types, and it seemed that with the paper set as "plain" it was OK, but I just tried printing again after letting the printer rest for the night, and wasted 6 pages until I managed to print 2 boarding passes... Is there anything else I could try to resolve the issue?

  today i tried to install win7 from an external hdd to my system. i tried this tut http://www.pcworld.com/article/165159/install_windows_7_from_an_external_hard_drive.html and everything went fine till i pluged off the external hdd. after i pluged it off and tried to restart the system i get a missing boot manager error. if i plug the external hdd in again it's all working fine again. i've searched for the last 2h and didn't find a good answer. did any of you have one ? regards Alex ps: i already tried any forms of reperation and the system is installed on the correct hdd.

• Can't login into Fedora 14 (XFCE) desktop. For the second time.

  Hello. I'm experiencing a problem with my Fedora 14 XFCE spin, which doesn't seem to let me pass the login screen: I enter my password for my user record, authentication passes (no 'Authentication Failure' message, which was when I tried to login as 'root' without root login enabled), and the screen becomes black (command line) for a couple of seconds and (voila!) my login screen emerges again. I did nothing to cause that, it just suddenly logged me out when I was editing window manager settings via XFCE's built-in GUI utility (choosing window decorations style, from the listbox on the left) For the first time, I had to boot from live CD and do a fresh install, but I don't really want to do that again :) Is there some way to repair this (maybe login via command line and reset window manager settings, I don't know really)? • HDD vanished after wakeup from standby

  In my computer I got two hard drives: One 80GB Intel X25 Postville SSD for the system and a 1,5TB Sata HDD for data. When I put the system into standby, and wake it up again, roundabout 50% of the time the 1,5TB HDD is not found. It just vanished from the system (wreaking havok to all programs running which had open files on it). Even going into the system management and refreshing the drives does not find the lost HDD. There are no messages about this in the event log. After a warm reboot the hdd is found again, just like it should. The system is a Shuttle SP35P2 Pro with 8GB Ram and DualCore CPU, OS is Windows 7 Ultimate. I even set up the OS anew, didn't help. Any ideas what might cause this? How to debug, or maybe even fix it?

• What is the best aproach for coding in a slow compilation environment

  I used to coding in C# in a TDD style - write/or change a small chunk of code, re-compile in 10 seconds the whole solution, re-run the tests and again. Easy... That development methodology worked very well for me for a few years, until a last year when I had to go back to C++ coding and it really feels that my productivity has dramatically decreased since. The C++ as a language is not a problem - I had quite a lot fo C++ dev experience... but in the past. My productivity is still OK for a small projects, but it gets worse when with the increase of the project size and once compilation time hits 10+ minutes it gets really bad. And if I find the error I have to start compilation again, etc. That is just purely frustrating. Thus I concluded that in a small chunks (as before) is not acceptable - any recommendations how can I get myself into the old gone habit of coding for an hour or so, when reviewing the code manually (without relying on a fast C# compiler), and only recompiling/re-running unit tests once in a couple of hours. With a C# and TDD it was very easy to write a code in a evolutionary way - after a dozen of iterations whatever crap I started with was ending up in a good code, but it just does not work for me anymore (in a slow compilation environment). Would really appreciate your inputs and recos. p.s. not sure how to tag the question - anyone is welcome to re-tag the question appropriately. Cheers.

When I have monitor connected to this machine, I can change the resolution of my VNC viewer in the following line: $vnc4server --geometry 1440x900 This worked for me, but I always use this machine remotely, I unplug the monitor and reboot. and the above command line not work anymore. It seems that Ubuntu must conntect to a real monitor before I can change my resolution in my VNC viewer. Can anyone help? • Is a "failed" RAID 5 disk really no good?

  This is my first venture in to setting up RAID on my home system. After installing 3 x 1TB drives in RAID 5, everything was running well for about 10 days. Then, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology software that monitors the disks and RAID on my system, told me that I had a failed drive. I marked the drive as good, and the array rebuilt. Then a day or so later I got a notification again, that the drive failed. I'm just wondering if this drive really is no good or if there is something I can do to get it working again? Or, do I just need to return it to the store where I bought it and get a replacement?

  hello, I have a WinXP 32 host (IBM T400) with VWware workstation 7 (7.0.1 build-227600) and some guest OS (Win xp, NT, etc.) I can ping from the host to guest OS and vice versa, but... every other "protocols" do not work at all. No http from host to guest, no CIFS, nothing, nothing, nothing. Windows firewall is turned off, TCP/IP filer is turned off. i re-installed VMware workstation, then the networking started working again, but, after some reboots... it stopped again. Connectivity among guest OS... it works FINE. Can not understand... problems exist just between host and guest. Host-only or NAT... it is the same. Any suggestion?

• Mac Websharing Off but Process Running

  I have my mac setup to use php / mysql / apache via macports. Recently it has gone a bit pear shaped: it seems that the local mac versions of apache and mysql are running blocking the macports services: (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:443 Web sharing in System preferences is off - How can I properly disable it? I tried turning it on an off again in System Preferences but it would not changed from off to on. Also if I kill the process it starts running again.

• Duplicate content issue after URL-change with 301-redirects

  We got the following problem: We changed all URLs on our page from oldURL.html to newURL.html and set up 301-redirects (ca. 600 URLs) Google re-crawled our page, indexed all the new URLs (newURL.html), but didn't crawl the old URLs (oldURL.html) again, as there were no internal links pointing at those domains anymore after the URL-change. This resulted in massive ranking-drops, etc. because (i) Google thought oldURL.html has exactly the same content as newURL, causing duplicate content issues, and (ii) Google did not transfer the juice from oldURL to newURL, because the 301-redirect was never noticed. Now we reset all internal Links to the old URLs again, which then redirect to the newURLs, in the hope that Google would re-crawl the pages, once there are internal links pointing at them. This is partially happening, but at a really low speed, so it would take multiple months to notice all-redirects. I guess, because Google thinks: "Aah, I already know oldURL.html, so no need to re-crawl it. Possible solutions we thought of are ... Submitting as many of the old URLs to the index as possible via Webmaster Tools, to manually trigger a crawl. Doing that already Submitting a sitemap with all old URLs - but not sure if good idea, because Google does not seem to like 301-redirects in a sitemap ... Both solutions are not perfect - and we cannot wait for three months, just to regain our old rankings. What are your ideas? Best, David

  Hello, I started a long running background-process (dd with /etc/urandom) in my ssh console. Later I had to disconnect. When I logged in, again (this time directly, without ssh), the process still seemed to to run. I am not sure what happened - I did not use disown. When I logged in later, the process was not listed in top at first, but after a while it reclaimed a high CPU percentage, as I expected. So I assume dd is still running. Now, I'd like to see the progress. I use kill -USR1 <pid> but nothing is printed. Is there any way to get the output again?

• Why won't Outlook sync with Google Calendar?

  A colleague of mine is having problems with Outlook and Google Calendar Sync. He got a new machine and set up Outlook 2007 on that machine. He also installed Google Calendar Sync. However, when he synced Outlook with Google Calendar, he got a number of duplicate entries in Outlook's calendar. We tried deleting all entries in the Outlook calendar and doing a 1-way sync from Google Calendar to Outlook, but the duplicated entries appeared again. We ultimately removed the duplicated entries manually, but we experienced problems pushing the changes back to Google Calendar, so we deleted the calendar in Google Calendar and tried to sync again (using a 1-way sync from Outlook to Google). Now Google Calendar Sync says that it is synchronizing, but no entries appear in the Google Calendar calendar. What could the problem be?
