• Use LaTeX Listings to correctly detect and syntax highlight embedded code of a different language in

  I have scripts that have one-liners or sort scripts from other languages within them. How can I have LaTeX listings detect this and change the syntax formating language withing the script? This would be especially useful for awk withing bash I believe.   I heard a lot that modern computers are based on Turing machine. I'd like to share my understanding and hear your comments. I think the computer is a big general-purpose Turing machine. Each program we write is a small specific-purpose Turing machine. The classical Turing machine do its job based on the input and its current state inside and so do our programs. Let's take a running program (a process) as an example. We know that in the process's address space, there's areas for stack, heap, and code. A classical Turing machine doesn't have the ability to remember many things, so we borrow the concept of stack from the push-down automaton. The heap and stack areas contains the state of our specific-purpose Turing machine (our program). The code area represents the logic of this small Turing machine. And various I/O devices supply input to this Turing machine. The above is my naive understanding about the working paradigm of modern computer. I couln't wait to hear your comments. If I call m.getClass() I obtain "mypackage.Message1", so the subclass and not the superclass. • Flex 3 - Saving an image of a component

  Im currently trying to work the imageSnapshot function in flex. Ive been looking hard but I cant seem to find a solution to my problem. I wish to take a screenshot of one of my components, to capture the final output of my program, since a plain "printscreen" cuts off some of the output due to it scrolling. My current code looks like - <mx:ApplicationControlBar dock="true"> <mx:Button label="Take snapshot of Profile" click="takeSnapshot();" /> </mx:ApplicationControlBar> Which when called does - private function takeSnapshot(even:Event=null):void { var imageSnap:ImageSnapshot = ImageSnapshot.captureImage(viewstack1); Now i think this is taking the image of the viewstack which I want... But Im stumped on what to do from here! Is it not possible to now just copy the image to the clipboard, or produce a new window in my browser with the entire image inside? If anyone has any other way to do this, suggestions would be wonderful. Thank you for your time.

• Form values in a list item

  Here is the site mock-up I'm working on for my job: http://dev.arm.gov/~noensie/dqhands/cgi-bin/explorer. I'm still a novice in web developing and I need help with placing form values in a list item to pass on to another page. I'd rather not go in great detail the purpose of this website, but in terms of its basic use, select the parameters in the middle column for a request and add it to the list on the right column by pressing on "add request" button when it appears. After the list have been populated, a user would submit the selected requests, which will direct them to another page based on the requests selected (or added to the list, same thing). That last sentence is where I'm having a problem. Right now, each of request in the list in the right column are <li> elements and I assign them attribute values that needed to be passed on to the next page. I tried inserting a hidden input with same values, but I'm still not sure how to utilize that; I'm not even sure using the hidden input is the correct way. Also the "submit request" button is located outside the <form> block. I was going to utilize javascript and jQuery to enable the button to serialize the values in the <form> block, but I don't know quite how to do that. Go ahead and take a look at my javascript code (index.js) and slay me, or, I mean, my code. It's still pretty elementary and short (~260 lines, that's short right?). I will take any help for this problem (as the matter of fact, if you see any other problems or a better way of implementation of something, go ahead and mention that too); tips, advice, code samples, or whatever else you can contribute, it will be greatly appreciated. • Clarification needed: How does .NET runtime resolve assembly references from parent folder?

  I have the following output structure of executables in my solution: %ProgramFiles% | +-[MyAppName] | +-[Client] | | | +-(EXE & several DLL assemblies) | +-[Common] | | | +-[Schema Assemblies] | | | | | +-(several DLL assemblies) | | | +-(several DLL assemblies) | +-[Server] | +-(EXE & several DLL assemblies) Each project in solution references different DLL assemblies, some of which are outputs from other projects in solution, and others are plain 3rd-party assemblies. For example, [Client] EXE might reference an assembly in [Common], which is in a different directory branch. All references have "Copy Local" set to false, to mirror the layout of the files in the final installed application. Now, if I take a look at reference properties in the Visual Studio IDE, I see that "Path" of every reference is absolute and that it corresponds to the actual output location of the assembly. That's understandable and correct. As expected, solution compiles and runs just fine. What I don't understand is, why everything seems to work even when I close the IDE, rename the [MyAppName] directory and run the [Client] EXE manually? How does the runtime find the assemblies if the reference paths aren't the same as they were at the time of linking? To be clear - this is actually exactly what I'm after: a semi-dispersed set of application files that run fine regardless of where the [MyAppName] directory is located or even what it's named. I'd just like to know, how and why this works without any specific path resolution on my part. I've read the answers to this similar question, but I still don't get it. Help much appreciated!

• CouchDB, HDFS, HBase or which is right for my situation?

  Hello all, This question is regarding data storage systems such as CouchDB, HDFS and HBase, specifically, which is right. I am looking at making a simple and customized Document Management System for my organization. Basically, we need the ability to store some Word Documents, PDFs and other similar files. I also want to store metadata about these files (e.g., Author, Dates, etc). Usage permissions would also be handy, but that can probably be built using meta-data. I would also need the ability to full-text index. The ability to version, while not required would be extremely useful. I would like the ability to simply add hardware to expand the resources of the system and the system must support Network Attached Storage over the CIFS or NFS protocol(s). I have read about CouchDB, HDFS and HBase. My preferred programming language is C# as all of my end-users will be running Windows machines and I will want to make both web and winforms client implementations. My question is which solution best fits my needs? Based on my research it appears that CouchDB (utilizing the CouchDB-Lounge and CouchDB-Lucene) perfectly fits my needs. However, I am worried that since I have worked with CouchDB that I might be overlooking something useful for my needs in HDFS or HBase or something similar due to a bias. Any and all opinions are welcome as I am looking for the community input as I really do not want to make the wrong choice at the start of my project. Please ask if you need more information. • How can I randomly iterate through a large Range?

  I would like to randomly iterate through a range. Each value will be visited only once and all values will eventually be visited. A Fisher-Yates shuffle is used to efficiently provide random ordering. My problem is that shuffle needs to operate on an array, which is not cool because I am working with astronomically large numbers. Ruby will quickly consume a large amount of RAM trying to create a monstrous array. Imagine replacing (0..9) with (0..99**99). This is also why the following code will not work: tried = {} # store previous attempts bigint = 99**99 bigint.times { x = rand(bigint) redo if tried[x] tried[x] = true f(x) # some function } This code is very naive and quickly runs out of memory as tried obtains more entries. What sort of algorithm can accomplish what I am trying to do? [Edit1]: Why do I want to do this? I'm trying to exhaust the search space of a hash algorithm for a N-length input string looking for partial collisions. Each number I generate is equivalent to a unique input string, entropy and all. Basically, I'm "counting" using a custom alphabet. [Edit2]: This means that f(x) in the above examples is a method that generates a hash and compares it to a constant, target hash for partial collisions. I do not need to store the value of x after I call f(x) so memory should remain constant over time. [Edit3/4/5/6]: Further clarification/fixes.

• Rendering Swing Components to an Offscreen buffer

  I have a Java (Swing) application, running on a 32-bit Windows 2008 Server, which needs to render it's output to an off-screen image (which is then picked up by another C++ application for rendering elsewhere). Most of the components render correctly, except in the odd case where a component which has just lost focus is occluded by another component, for example where there are two JComboBoxes close to each other, if the user interacts with the lower one, then clicks on the upper one so it's pull-down overlaps the other box. In this situation, the component which has lost focus is rendered after the one occluding it, and so appears on top in the output. It renders correctly in the normal Java display (running full-screen on the primary display), and attempting to change the layers of the components in question does not help. I am using a custom RepaintManager to paint the components to the offscreen image, and I assume the problem lies with the order in which addDirtyRegion() is called for each of the components in question, but I can't think of a good way of identifying when this particular state occurs in order to prevent it. Hacking it so that the object which has just lost focus is not repainted stops the problem, but obviously causes the bigger problem that it is not repainted in all other, normal, circumstances. Is there any way of programmatically identifying this state, or of reordering things so that it does not occur? Many thanks, Nick

  I'm trying to test the sendfile() system call under Linux 2.6.32 to zero-copy data between two regular files. As far as I understand, it should work: ever since 2.6.22, sendfile() has been implemented using splice(), and both the input file and the output file can be either regular files or sockets.   I've "integrated" SMF into Wordpress by querying the forum for a list of the most recent videos from a specific forum board and displaying them on the Wordpress homepage. However when I add the ORDER BY clause, the query (which I tested on other parts of the same page successfully), breaks. • PHP Error handling in WordPress plugin

  I am a newbie to both PHP and Wordpress (but do ok in C#), and am struggling to understand the error handling in a custom plugin I am attempting to write. The basics of the plugin is to query an exsiting MSSQL database (note its not the standard MYSQL db...) and return the rows back to the screen. This was working well, but the hosting provider has taken my database offline, which led me to the error handling problem (which I thought was ok). The following code is failing to connect to the database (as expected), but puts an error onto the screen and stops the page processing. It does not even output the 'or die' error text. • Binary Search Tree - Postorder logic

  I am looking at implementing code to work out binary search tree. Before I do this I was wanting to verify my input data in postorder and preorder. I am having trouble working out what the following numbers would be in postorder and preorder I have the following numbers 4, 3, 14 ,8 ,1, 15, 9, 5, 13, 10, 2, 7, 6, 12, 11, that I am intending to put into an empty binary tree in that order. The order I arrived at for the numbers in POSTORDER is 2, 1, 6, 3, 7, 11, 12, 10, 9, 8, 13, 15, 14, 4. Have I got this right? I was wondering if anyone here would be able to kindly verify if the postorder sequence I came up with is indeed the correct sequence for my input i.e doing left subtree, right subtree and then root. The order I got for pre order (Visit root, do left subtree, do right subtree) is 4, 3, 1, 2, 5, 6, 14 , 8, 7, 9, 10, 12, 11, 15, 13. I can't be certain I got this right. • Restful WCF Service - how to send data with illegal XML characters?

  I have a RESTful WCF web service. One of my methods has several input parameters. One of the input parameters is a string. Some times the data I am passing to this web method will include content that has one or more "illegal characters" - i.e. "&". So, I replace this with &amp; before passing it to the web service - but it still throws an exception. The exception isn't visible, as the data never reaches the web service, but I know that it is this content that is causing the problem, as I have done several tests sending data that doesn't contain an illegal XML character, and every time it worked, but any data containing "&" will fail. Am I not supposed to replace "&" with &amp;?
