• Lubuntu fails plug and play such as scanners; default file location on Gnumeric

  I am new to Lubuntu and I have been giving it a good try but confess I am now tempted to go back to Windows. However, I am open to persuasion if I can get a simple answer to two questions. The first is a hardware question issue. It seems from the forum that many users like me cannot use plug and play hardware such as scanners. Are we doing anything wrong or does Lubuntu (mine is 13.04) not support plug and play or scanners? I have read lots of previous answers about scanners but they all seem to involve re-writing lines of instructions to various areas of the system - not something an amateur like me can do with ease. Mine is a Packard Belle Diamond 1200 plus and apparently it should work fine on Lubuntu - but can I even get it recognised, let alone working - No? Secondly is there an easy way in Gnumeric to set the default file location so that I don't have to trawl through my whole tree to locate a file I want to open? Thanks to anybody who can get me stay with Lubuntu with their wisdom.

• Disk controller speed responsible for slow write speeds?

  I have question. I'm using ESXi 4.0U1 in an IBM x3200M2 with an integrated LSI 1064e RAID controller, without any kind of cache. I have 3 250GB HOT-SWAP SATA HDs configured in RAID1E (IME). ESXi works fine, read speed are quite OK, but write speeds are incredible slow, never more than 8MB/s, and this is the best case scenario, benchmarking with iozone streaming writes, using a VMWare Paravirtual controller and with only this VM active, no swapping of any kind (total vm memory reserved). Already wrote to IBM but I don't have any kind of pay support so they didn't even answered, so I'm just wondering... anybody has any experience with a similar setup? I just want to be sure this is hardware related and can't be fixed with some kind of config option, because I'm thinking on buying a new RAID controller (Adaptec 2405 looks nice). Thanks again!

• Exchange 2010 SP1 upgrade prerequisite checks fail for KB979744, but update fails as Not Applicable

  I'm trying to install the SP1 update to an RTM Exchange 2010 box. The Client Access Role Prerequisites are failing, complaining that KB979744 isn't installed. I downloaded the update and tried to install it, however it will not install complaining that 'The update does not apply to your system'. A discussion on TechNet indicates that I need .NET 2.0 or 3.5 installed (both are). Aside from that I've been unable to find anything helpful. Hopefully someone has encountered this and knows how to get around it, don't really want to use up a support call on this. Edit: This is on a 64-bit edition of Windows Server 2008 Datacenter (without Hyper-V) SP2.

• Is there Linux Live USB that works with Snow Leopard macbook pro from 2010 april

  Hello, I was searching for a long time a Linux Live USB that I can boot my macbook pro from. Is there such distro so I can install it on Snow Leopard or Windows 7? UPDATE I've found this: "isohybrid" CD images (..) are special in that as well as the normal CD-based ISO9660 filesystem they also contain a valid-looking DOS-style partition table. Thus, if you simply copy one of these images raw to a USB stick a normal PC BIOS will boot the image directly. (...) Finally: I'd like to add support into xorriso for creating the nasty HFS hybrid images that are needed for booting Macs. The code that does this in cdrkit is probably some of the worst that I've ever worked with, and I'd like to get away from it. • Can't decide on a new distro

  I've had Ubuntu (9.10) on my netbook in the past and I really liked it. I'm currently running Fedora and feeling like I should "change it up" again. I've played around with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid a little, and so far I'm very impressed. I've always wanted to try Arch, but I'm worried I won't have the driver support I need for all the non-standard hardware in a netbook. Does anybody have a suggestion for a new distro to try? I'm preferably looking for something feature-rich over light-weight, and something that I can have up and running with a minimum of configuration (at least partially working). Thanks!

• SQL Server Configuration Scripting Utility Release 9

  There’s another update to my little utility to script a SQL Server’s configuration.  I use this for two purposes.  First, I use it to keep my database mirroring servers up to date.  Second, I capture the output in a version control system and keep that for historical reference. In release 3.0.9 I made the following changes: Rewrote the encrypted trigger scripting.  It will now list the encrypted triggers in a comment in the table script but can’t actually script them. It now scripts any server event notifications. You can script a single database using the /scriptdb flag.  Please note that it will also script the instance and system databases when it does this. It will script any user-defined endpoints.  This will capture your mirroring endpoints and more importantly any service broker endpoints. It will gracefully skip database mail on the Express Edition. It still doesn’t support SQL Server 2012.  I think that’s the next feature to add though.

• Macbook Air Reboot after Wake when Windows 7 Running in VM

  Is anyone who is running a Windows 7 VM on a new 2011 i5 Macbook Air (I have the 13" w/128 SSD) able to put their Macbook air to sleep for extended periods of time (like overnight) without manually shutting down or suspending a VM that's running in Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox? I've tried all three virtualization products with no success. With all three, if I forget to manually shutdown or suspend the VM, OSX reboots when I try and wake the Macbook. Same goes if I try and use the Deep Sleep widget. Parallels support openly admitted that this was an issue and thankfully gave me a refund. I've also tried the trial version of VMware and VirtualBox, but the behavior is the same. Should I just give up or is anyone out there having more success at this?

• Optimize Windows file access over network

  At my company I frequently need to access shared files over a Windows network. These files are located on the other side of the planet, so I guess the file share goes through some kind of VPN over Internet, but I don't control this and it is supposed to be "transparent" for me. However it is extremely slow. Displaying the content of a directory in the file explorer takes about 10s. Even if over the Internet, I did not expect that retrieving a list of file names would be that long. Are there any settings to optimize this from my Windows XP workstation, or is it mostly related to the way the network is configured? The only thing I have found so far is to cache all file names, while by default only short file names are cached (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/843418).

• Internationalization messages based in views or in model entities

  I have a small webapp in java and I am adding the internationalization support, replacing texts with labels that are defined in dictionary files. While some texts are obviously unique to each view (v.g. the html title), other refer to concepts from the model (v.g. a ticket, the location or status of such ticket, etc.) As usual, some terms will appear many times in different locations (vg, in both the edition page and in the search page and in the listings I have a "ticketLocation" label). My question is: can I organize the labels around the model concepts (so I have a ticket.location label and I use it everywhere such field is labeled) or should I make a different label for each (so form.ticketLocation and filter.ticketLocation and list.ticketLocation). I would go for the first option; I have searched for tips and the only thing that I see that could hinder me is due to the length of the string disrupting the design, and even for that I would prefer having to add a ticket.locationShort for places where there is not much space. What is your opinion/tips/experience?

• How to build an API on top of an existing Rails app with NodeJs and what architecture to use?

  The explanation I was recently hired by a company that has an old RoR 2.3 application with more than 100k users, a strong SEO strategy with more than 170k indexed urls, native android and ios applications and other custom-made mobile and web applications that rely on a not so good API from the same RoR app. They recently merged with a company from another country as an strategy to grow the business and the profit. They have almost the same stats, a similar strategy and mobile apps. We have just decided that we need to merge the data from both companies and to start a new app from scratch since the RoR app is to old and heavily patched and the app from the other company was built with a custom PHP framework without any documentation. The only good news is that both databases are in MySQL and have a similar structure. The challenge I need to build a new version that: can handle a lot of traffic, preserves the SEO strategies of both companies, serve 2 different domains, and have a strong API that can support legacy mobile apps from both companies and be ready for a new set of native apps. I want to use RoR 3.2 for the main web apps and NodeJs with a Restful API. I know that I need to be very careful with the mobile apps and handle multiple versions of the API. I also think that I need to create a service that can handle a lot IO request since the apps is heavily used to create orders for restaurants at a certain time of the day. The questions With all this in mind: What type of architecture do you recommend me to follow? What gems or node packages do you think will work the best? How do I build a new rails app and keep using the same database structure? Should I use NodeJS to build an API or just build a new service with Ruby? I know that I'm asking to much from you guys, but please help me by answering any topic that you can or by pointing me on the right direction. • How to make my display Grayscale?

  I want to reduce the saturation of my laptop monitor to the point that it is almost grayscale. That's the goal. Intel and Asus don't have an answer. Asus Splendid and the intel graphics control panel can increase the saturation, but not lower it. I would prefer a software solution, although I DIY'ed a vga grayscale adapter for my desktop. I have an Asus UL30A with an Intel GMA 4500MHD. I know that the latest ATI cards, windotosh's and high end nvidia cards all support control panel desaturation. Why? black and white makes me 3 times more productive.

  As mush as I personally find the new user interface to be absolutely awful (and even more so on a server O.S.), we'll soon have to put up with Windows Server 2012 (formerly Windows Server 8). So, let's start with the basics: which Microsoft products do actually run on it? I've been looking around for a compatibility chart for a while, but couldn't find one. On the requirements/support pages for various Microsoft products (even for the latest releases), Windows Server 2012 is never mentioned at all. So, what about... SQL Server Exchange Lync SharePoint System Center (CM, OM, DPM, VMM...) And so on?

• 1K incoming http post requests per second, each with a 10-50K file

  I'm trying to figure out what kind of server setup I will need to support: 1K http post requests per second each post will contain a xml file between 5-50K (average of 25 kilobytes) Even if I get a 100 Mb/s connection with my dedicated box (they usually give 10 Mb/s but you can upgrade), from my calculations that is about 12K kb/s which means about 480 25kb files per second. So this means I need around 3 servers then, each with 100 Mb/s connection. Would a single server running HAProxy be able to redirect the requests to other servers or does this mean I need to get something else that can handle more than 100 Mb/s to proxy things out to the other servers? If my math is off I'd appreciate any corrections you may have.

• Windows 7 Keyboard Repeat Rate and Delay are Reset on Resume from Standby / Sleep

  I always keep my keyboard repeat rate at the maximum and the delay at the minimum for optimal keyboard responsiveness. Under Windows 7 however, I have found that the rate and delay are reset to the defaults (ie the one’s that are set with a fresh Windows installation) whenever the system resumes from sleep and requires opening the keyboard control panel applet (which already shows the desired settings) and manually setting them again by pressing Enter. I have seen a couple of posts in the Microsoft support forums, but no solutions. Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

  Our software installs a package of legacy software for the client, some of it has old hlp file from 3rd party vendor requiring winhlp32.exe (note: we have no legal right to modify the hlp). Those client may only have cd/dvd and might not have internet access, etc. So I need a free 'WinHlp32.exe compatible' replacement for our redistribution under vista and windows 7. • Why is there no 64-bit Linux Firefox build?

  It seems that I have to build my own 64-bit Firefox for Linux, as Mozilla won't support it until Firefox 4. Why is this? It looks to me as though it works fine, although without some of the speed improvements to the Javascript engine which the 32-bit version gets. (Edit: Yes I could run the 32-bit version but I'm trying to keep my system clear of 32-bit cruft and libraries etc, and all the plug-ins worked fine in 3.0.11 64-bit unofficial builds.) Update : No longer relevant as Mozilla provide 64-bit builds, but they don't show them on the download pages of mozilla.org, just on the ftp site as mentioned in one of the answers below.

Some constraints: my ISP now provides 120 Mbit bandwidth - the router must be able to handle it I have 3 computers and a laptop at home - the router must have at least 4 LAN ports and the WAN port I need to be able to do the following in parallel: use bittorrent with ~1000 connections transfer files from one home computer to another at high speed access one home computer from my workplace I don't really need wireless I don't really want two boxes to serve all these purposes. So I was searching for a router with 1 Gbit ports, jumbo frame support and good reviews, but haven't really found a promising candidate so far. Any suggestions?

• Converting Visio (.vsd) files to pdf automatically [migrated]

  I am trying to create a scheduled task to convert all my .vsd files to pdf so all of our devices can read them (linux, mac, smartphones, etc..) and I would prefer not paying for something that can be done with Visio + PDFcreator. The approach of using openoffice doesn't work with .vsd files since it's not a supported format ( Method/tools for batch-converting Microsoft Word files into PDF?) What I've currently is this: 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio11\VISIO.EXE' /pt "Z:\Archive\Files.vsd",-PPDFCREATORPRINTER /nologo That is able to open automatically the document I want and to prepare it to be printed, the only missing part is that it requires me to confirm on the printing dialog.   I use SVN for my work at home and office, but I usually forget to commit the changes before shutdown. Therefore, I wish I could turn on my home/office PC at office/home. I already have TeamViewer installed on both PCs, so it will be okay as soon as the power is turned on. I have read many articles about this, I found both my PC and office computers support Wake-on-LAN. However, I don't know much about other config. And I need to turn on my computers through the Internet, not on LAN. My office Internet connection has static IP, however, my home Internet connection has dynamic IP, it changes as soon as I reset the modem, but it is not a big problem, I rarely turn the Internet modem off. And I don't have privilege to config office Internet connection, but I have Administration privilege on both PCs. Please give me details steps to turn on my office PC from home, and turn on my home PC from office.

• Ways to improve completeness of files for data recovery and scanning?

  I am using R-studio for data recovery on one of my ntfs partition. There is a pdf file about 16MB, but the software can only recover 15MB of it. So I am thinking about what ways can be used to improve the quality of scanning and recovery by the software? I am looking around its preferences. I am not quite sure whether there are some adjustable parameters for scanning and recovery which can be fine-tuned to improve the quality? R-studio has a free demo version, for which scanning is free,but recovery isn't.   Kernel 3.5 introduces: This release includes a driver for using an IEEE-1394 connection as a SCSI transport. This enables to expose SCSI devices to other nodes on the Firewire bus, for example hard disk drives. It's a similar functionality to Firewire Target Disk Mode on many Apple computers. This release also adds a usb-gadget driver that does the same with USB. The driver supports two USB protocols are supported that is BBB or BOT (Bulk Only Transport) and UAS (USB Attached SCSI). BOT is advertised on alternative interface 0 (primary) and UAS is on alternative interface 1. Both protocols can work on USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. • Cloning Fresh Windows 7 with external HDD, DVD or CDs?

  I want to create Windows installation disk (not necessarily CD) from my Windows 7 Pro laptop, not sure what it actually means here. The material is about 50-60GB, requiring about 12 pcs of 5GB disk (not going to happen, too much work to use them later). I have the Windows serial on the laptop bottom and this is so-called firm -laptop (no idea what it actually mean, better warranty and some instant support thing apparently). Now how to do the clone with external material such as DVDs? how can I create mock-windows-installation medium or some real windows-installation medium? I am now not sure whether Windows offers W7 -installations medium online, well my W -peer mentioned some MSDAA -something. Perhaps related Cloning Fresh Windows 7 -fsed HDD to Linux Server because having no external HDD or disks for the Backup
