  • Any examples of fair mmo games with quick completion

    I'm looking for some example games for inspiration that allow from 10 to a large number of players at a time and can be completed in 10 to 30 minutes. I'm looking for something that would have extremely low bandwidth and not be dependent on chance or luck (i.e one player can't gain an unfair advantage because the computer put them in a better position). Realized on the way home that more clarifications might have been helpful. I'm looking to develop a pay-to-play competition that would allow a large number of players to compete in a relatively short period of time. One way would be to have an mmo that can be completed in 30 minutes, another way would be if you could have 10 person games that finish in under 5 minutes and then have the winners compete against each other until a winner is decided. I'm interested in any genre that would make for a fun/interesting game that doesn't depend on luck, so all players should have the same choice/availability of activities/resources and follow the same rules. Some possible games that could possibly be modified into what I want, would be bztanks (too easy to create a bot), diplomacy (takes too long), risk, some chess like game. I was just wondering if there are other game types to the ones I have been considering.

Edit #1 : I just noticed that when I click "Pause" the game freezes and it takes me to the MainMenu.That's because I added the GUIButton which takes you to the main menu.I think the whole script structure is wrong.I also forgot to mention that Im new in scripting/unity.   • Algorithm for procedural city generation?

    I am planning on making a (simple) procedural city generator using Java. I need ideas on whan algorithm to use for the layout, and the actual buildings. The city will mostly have skyscrapers, not really much complex stuff. For the layout I already have a simple algorithm implemented: Create a Map with java.awt.Point keys and Integer values. Fill it with all the points in the city's bounds with the value as -1 (unnassigned) Shuffle the map, and assign the 1st 10 of the keys IDs (from 1-10) Loop until all points have IDs: Loop though all points: Assign points next to an assigned point IDs of the point next to them, if 2 or more points border the point, then randomly choose which ID the point will get. You will end up with 10 random regions. Make roads bordering these regions. Fill the inside of each region with a randomly spaced and randomly rotated grid PROBLEM: This is not the fastest way to do it. What algorithm should I use for the layout. And what should I use to make each building's design? I don't even know how I'm going to do that yet (fractals maybe). I just need some ideas, not actual code.

    I have three baskets of balls and each of them has 10 balls which have the following numbers: Basket 1: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Basket 2: 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 Basket 3: 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 What would be the possible variations If I were to pick one ball from each basket? I guess this is called as Probability in Mathematics but not sure. How would you write this code in C# (or any other programming language) to get the correct results? Oracle VM Server for SPARC enables you to create multiple virtual systems on a single physical system.Each virtual system is called alogical domain and runs its own instance of Oracle Solaris 10 or Oracle Solaris 11. The version of the Oracle Solaris OS software that runs on a guest domain is independent of the Oracle Solaris OS version that runs on the primary domain. So, if you run the Oracle Solaris 10 OS in the primary domain, you can still run the Oracle Solaris 11 OS in a guest domain, and if you run the Oracle Solaris 11 OS in the primary domain, you can still run the Oracle Solaris 10 OS in a guest domain In addition to that starting with the Oracle VM Server for SPARC 2.2 release you can migrate guest domain even if source and target machines have different processor type. You can migrate guest domain from a system with UltraSPARC  T2+ or SPARC T3 CPU to a system with a SPARC T4 CPU.The guest domain on the source and target system must run Solaris 11 In order to enable cross CPU migration.In addition to that you need to change the cpu-arch property value on the source system.   • Solaris 11 VNC Server is "blurry" or "smeared"

    I've been annoyed by quality of the image that is displayed by my VNC viewer when I visit a Solaris 11 VNC server. How should I describe the image? Blurry? Grainy? Smeared? Low resolution? Compressed? Badly encoded? This is what I have gotten used to seeing on Solaris 11: This is not a problem for me when I view Solaris 10 VNC servers. I've finally taken the time to investigate, and the solution is simple. On the VNC client, don't allow "Tight" encoding. My VNC Viewer will negotiate to Tight encoding if it is available. When negotiating with the Solaris 10 VNC server, Tight is not a supported option, so the Solaris 10 server and my client will agree on ZRLE.  Now that I have disabled Tight encoding on my VNC client, the Solaris 11 VNC Servers looks much better: How should I describe the display when my VNC client is forced to negotiate to ZRLE encoding with the Solaris 11 VNC Server? Crisp? Clear? Higher resolution? Using a lossless compression algorithm? When I'm on a low bandwidth connection, I may re-enable Tight compression on my laptop. In the mean time, the ZRLE compression is sufficient for a coast-to-coast desktop, through the corporate firewall, encoded with VPN, through my ISP and onto my laptop. YMMV.

  • How to structure reading of commands given at a(n interactive) CLI prompt?

    Let's say I have a program called theprogram (the marketing team was on strike when the product was to be named). I start that program by typing, perhaps not surprisingly, the program name as a command into a command prompt. After that, I get into a loop (from the users standpoint, an interactive command-line prompt), where one command will be read from the user, and depending on what command was given, the program will execute some instructions. I have been doing something like the following (in C-like pseudocode): main_loop{ in=read_input(); if(in=="command 1") do_something(); else if(in=="command 2") do_something_else(); ... } (In a real program, I would probably encapsulate more things into different procedures, this is just an example.) This works well for a small amount of commands, but let's say you have 100, 1000 or even 10 000 of them (the manual would be huge!). It is clearly a bad idea to have 10 000 ifs and else ifs after each other, for instance, the program would be hard to read, hard to maintain, contain a lot of boilerplate code... Yeah, you don't want to do that, so what approach would you recommend me to use (I will probably never use 10 000 commands in a program, but the solution should, at least preferably, be able to scale to that kind of massive (?) problems. The solution doesn't have to allow for arguments to the commands)?

  • Splitting an internet connection between multiple separate subnetworks

    Problem I have an internet connection that I want to split between four separate networks. My requirements are: I need to be able to monitor the amount of bandwidth and data being used by each network, and notify or control as necessary. The four networks should only be able to connect to the internet, not each other. My parents need to be able to operate it, so it needs a simple, preferably Windows-based GUI. Progress so far Server I have a mini-ITX server with six Gigabit ethernet ports - one for the ethernet internet connection, one for each of the four networks, and one for remote access to the server for administration. Bandwidth control I spent a long time researching solutions here. The majority of the control systems/software I found could control bandwidth usage via QOS, but could not monitor or control the amount of data being used. Eventually I found the SoftPerfect Bandwidth Manager, which has everything I need in terms of monitoring and control - per-interface quota management, usage statistics, a web interface for checking usage, and email notifications when quotas are exceeded. It is also Windows-based and has a simple GUI. Internet sharing This is where I am having issues. I am currently using Windows XP Pro SP2 for the server (yes, I know this is far from ideal, but it's the only spare Windows OS I currently have). I can't use the built-in Internet Connection Sharing for several reasons: The upstream internet router has an IP of 192.168.0.1 which ICS clashes with, and I cannot change the router settings. ICS can only share an internet connection with a single interface, but I have four. I have tried bridging the four network cards, but then the Bandwidth Manager cannot see the four individual interfaces - it only sees the bridge. I have tried setting up Dual DHCP DNS server (and am having issues getting DHCP offers to be received by clients), but that would still require gateway software of some sort, which I have been unable to find. My current attempt is to use OpenVPN, with a server for the internet NIC and a separate client for each of the four networks. My thought is that I could bridge the OpenVPN TAP devices to each NIC, meaning that the Bandwidth Manager would control traffic from the bridge instead of the interface. I have not made much progress here though - I've never used OpenVPN before. Questions Is there a Windows software package that does everything I need? (Unlikely, I know) Is there a Windows software package that will share internet between multiple NICs without bridging? Are either of my about attempts feasible? Would it help to have a newer/server version of Windows? Is there a non-Windows alternative that is easy to use?

Everything is great the first time it runs but crashes when called again either with custom functions or viewDidLoad. However I am using a other UI library already and just for this control I do not want a reference to another 4 MB lib. I just need this control.     I have a WCF service used mainly for managing documents in a repository. I used the chunking channel sample from MS so that I could upload/download huge files. Now I implemented reliable session with the service and I am seeing some strange behaviors. Here are the timeout values I am using. this.SendTimeout = new TimeSpan(0,10,0); this.OpenTimeout = new TimeSpan(0, 1, 0); this.CloseTimeout = new TimeSpan(0, 1, 0); this.ReceiveTimeout = new TimeSpan(0,10, 0); reliableBe.InactivityTimeout = new TimeSpan(0,2,0); I have the following issues. 1. If the Service is not up & running, the clients are not get disconnected after OpenTimeout. I tried it with my test client. Scenario 1: Without Reliable Session: I get the following exception: Could not connect to net.tcp://localhost:8788/MediaManagementService/ep1. The connection attempt lasted for a time span of 00:00:00.9848790. TCP error code 10061: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:8788 This is the correct behavior as I have given the OpenTimeout as 1 sec. Scenario 2: With ReliableSession: I get the same exception: Could not connect to net.tcp://localhost:8788/MediaManagementService/ep1. The connection attempt lasted for a time span of 00:00:00.9692460. TCP error code 10061: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:8788. But this message comes after around 10 mintes . (I believe after SendTimeout) So here I just have enabled the reliable session and now it looks like the OpenTimeout = SendTimeout for the client. Is this desired behavior? 2: Issue while uploading huge files with ReliableSession: The general rule is that you have to set a huge value for the maxReceivedMessageSize, SendTimeout and ReceiveTimeout. But in the case of Chunking channel, the max received message size doesn't matter as the data is sent in chunks. So I set a huge value for Send and ReceiveTimeout : say 10 hours. Now the upload is going fine, but it has a side effect that, even if the Service is not up, it takes 10 hours to timeout the client connection due to the behavior mentioned in (1). Please let me know your thoughts on this behavior.

  • mysql never releases memory

    I have a production server clocking about 4 million page views per month. The server has got 8GB of RAM and mysql acts as a database. I am facing problems in handling mysql to take this load. I need to restart mysql twice a day to handle this thing. The problem with mysql is that it starts with some particular occupation, the memory consumed by mysql keeps on increasing untill it reaches the maximum it can consume and then mysql stops responding slowly or does not respond at all, which freezes the server. All my tables are indexed properly and there are no long queries. I need some one to help on how to go about debugging what to do here. All my tables are myisam. I have tried configuring the parameters key_buffer etc but to no rescue. Any sort of help is greatly appreciated.   • C# System.Windows.Forms.WebBrowser Requires Flash to be Installed

    When I create a form and add a WebBrowser control to it and have it navigate to http://www.adobe.com/flashplatform the flash area says I need Adobe Flash Player installed. This is already installed in IE, but apparently not in the WebBrowser control. Is there are way to have the WebBrowser control run flash without having to manually go to the flash site and install. Flash is already installed the normal IE browser, just not the WebBrowser control in the forms app.
