• Some languages don't work when using Word 2007 Spellcheck from Interop

  I'm using the Word 2007 spellchecker via Interop in a VB.net desktop app. When using the default language (English), it works fine. If I set the language to French via LanguageId, it also works. But if I set it to French (Canadian) (Word.WdLanguageID.wdFrenchCanadian), it doesn't work. There's no error message, it simply runs and says the document contains no errors. I know it does, if I paste the exact same text into Word itself and run it with the French (Canadian) dictionary, it finds errors. Just why that dictionary doesn't work is kind of a mystery to me. • .NEt on WIN to Mono on Ubuntu

  I am looking at a possibility to change my ASP.NET 2.0 app to Mono framework. I have used the mono analyzer tool and it does detect some p/invoke and interop dependencies. For ex. 1) We use excel interops and on linux we are looking to use staroffice/Openoffice instead. Is there an easy way of substituting excel with staroffice? (I know it sounds bizarre, but just don't want to miss out in case anyone has done it already.) 2) LDAP auth: What could be the best alternative in Ubuntu (or an other flavour of Linux) ? 3) Is there an ajax framework for mono? Preferably with similar controls as Atlas?? I hope I am not too ambitious here.. thanks.

  Hi, well I know from my asp.net mvc experience that you can have attributes that handle exceptions (HandleErrorAttribute). As far as I can tell the Controller class has some OnException event which may be integral to this behaviour. However, I want to do something similar in my own code: dream example: public String MyProperty { [ExceptionBehaviour(typeof(FormatException), MyExEnum.ClearValue)] set { _thing.prop = Convert.ToThing(value); } } .... The code above obviously makes very little sense, but is close to the kind of thing I wish to do. I want the attribute on the property set accessor to catch some type of exception and then deal with this in some custom way (or even just swallow it). Any ideas guys?

• getting a "default" concrete class that implements an interface

  I am implementing a custom (and generic) Json.net serializer and hit a bump in the road that I could use some help on. When the deserializer is mapping to a property that is an interface, how can I best determine what sort of object to construct to deserialize to to place into the interface property. I have the following: [JsonConverter(typeof(MyCustomSerializer<foo>))] class foo { int Int1 { get; set; } IList<string> StringList {get; set; } } My serializer properly serializes this object, and but when it comes back in, and I try to map the json parts to to object, I have a JArray and an interface. I am currently instantiating anything enumerable like List as theList = Activator.CreateInstance(property.PropertyType); This works create to work with in the deserialization process, but when the property is IList, I get runtime complaints (obviously) about not being able to instantiate an interface. So how would I know what type of concrete class to create in a case like this? Thank you

• How do I get events to execute on the "main thread"

  I have 2 classes, one is frmMain a windows form and the other is a class in vb.NET 2003. frmMain contains a start button which executes the monitor function in the other class. My question is, I am manually adding the event handlers -- when the events are executed how do I get them to excute on the "main thread". Because when the tooltip balloon pops up at the tray icon it displays a second tray icon instead of popping up at the existing tray icon. I can confirm that this is because the events are firing on new threads because if I try to display a balloon tooltip from frmMain it will display on the existing tray icon. • How to deal with a flaw in System.Data.DataTableExtensions.CopyToDataTable()

  Hey guys, so I've come across something which is perhaps a flaw in the Extension method .CopyToDataTable. This method is used by Importing (in VB.NET) System.Data.DataTableExtensions and then calling the method against an IEnumerable. You would do this if you want to filter a Datatable using LINQ, and then restore the DataTable at the end. i.e: Imports System.Data.DataRowExtensions Imports System.Data.DataTableExtensions Public Class SomeClass Private Shared Function GetData() As DataTable Dim Data As DataTable Data = LegacyADO.NETDBCall Data = Data.AsEnumerable.Where(Function(dr) dr.Field(Of Integer)("SomeField") = 5).CopyToDataTable() Return Data End Function End Class In the example above, the "WHERE" filtering might return no results. If this happens CopyToDataTable throws an exception because there are no DataRows. Why? The correct behavior should be to return a DataTable with Rows.Count = 0. Can anyone think of a clean workaround to this, in such a way that whoever calls CopyToDataTable doesn't have to be aware of this issue? System.Data.DataTableExtensions is a Static Class so I can't override the behavior....any ideas? Have I missed something? cheers UPDATE: I have submitted this as an issue to Connect. • Code Contracts: Do we have to specify Contract.Requires(...) statements redundantly in delegating me

  I'm intending to use the new .NET 4 Code Contracts feature for future development. This made me wonder if we have to specify equivalent Contract.Requires(...) statements redundantly in a chain of methods. I think a code example is worth a thousand words: public bool CrushGodzilla(string weapon, int velocity) { Contract.Requires(weapon != null); // long code return false; } public bool CrushGodzilla(string weapon) { Contract.Requires(weapon != null); // specify contract requirement here // as well??? return this.CrushGodzilla(weapon, int.MaxValue); } For runtime checking it doesn't matter much, as we will eventually always hit the requirement check, and we will get an error if it fails. However, is it considered bad practice when we don't specify the contract requirement here in the second overload again? Also, there will be the feature of compile time checking, and possibly also design time checking of code contracts. It seems it's not yet available for C# in Visual Studio 2010, but I think there are some languages like Spec# that already do. These engines will probably give us hints when we write code to call such a method and our argument currently can or will be null. So I wonder if these engines will always analyze a call stack until they find a method with a contract that is currently not satisfied? Furthermore, here I learned about the difference between Contract.Requires(...) and Contract.Assume(...). I suppose that difference is also to consider in the context of this question then?

• Strange Effect with Overridden Properties and Reflection

  I've come across a strange behaviour in .NET/Reflection and cannot find any solution/explanation for this: Class A { public string TestString { get; set; } } Class B : A { public override string TestString { get { return "x"; } } } Since properties are just pairs of functions (get_PropName(), set_PropName()) overriding only the "get" part should leave the "set" part as it is in the base class. And this is just what happens if you try to instanciate class B and assign a value to TestString, it uses the implementation of class A. But what happens if I look at the instantiated object of class B in reflection is this: PropertyInfo propInfo = b.GetType().GetProperty("TestString"); propInfo.CanRead ---> true propInfo.CanWrite ---> false(!) And if I try to invoke the setter from reflection with: propInfo.SetValue("test", b, null); I'll even get an ArgumentException with the following message: Property set method not found. Is this as expected? Because I don't seem to find a combination of BindingFlags for the GetProperty() method that returns me the property with a working get/set pair from reflection.

• How to dynamically change fields in an .NET ORM

  I'm working in ASP.NET in an application where often users want to add fields or change field names. I'd like to be able to have an xml schema in place that is parsed and a dynamic object model created from it that can be accessed throughout the application. My initial reaction is that this is not realistic. I think there is flexibility about the dynamic nature of it. I think the people I'm trying to build this for wouldn't mind recompiling. Even if the app recompiled, I don't know how to abstract away enough in my code access the data to allow for users changing property names, etc. How can you write LINQ when the properties might change? In short, there's two questions here: 1) is there a way to dynamically generate an object model of the database and 2) is there a way to abstract away enough so that code accessing the database doesn't break when properties change?

• CLR - Common language runtime detected an invalid program in VS.NET

  I have been using Visual Studio 2008 quite long but lately I am getting this message when I am developing an application in C#: Common language runtime detected an invalid program This happens when I try to enter to the properties of a component (text masked box properties, tool box property etc..). But it really became a problem when I tried to launch an other solution that I downloaded from the Developer's 5 star program of Microsoft and it didn't allowed me to launch at all and just got the same problem... I looked for the answer at google but just got some clues about people having the same vague error but in different situations like in ASP.NET I would appreciate any help with this issue... :( I do not want to reinstall VS, that will be my last resource... Update: I never figured out what the problem was so I installed a virtual machine with Windows XP on it, there I only have Visual Studio and Netbeans.

  Hi All, I am setting up a Continuous Integration server. I have one issue that doesn't seem to be mentioned in the tutorials. I have a ASP.net Web Application that I need to compile and them publish. My Problem is that I seem to be able to compile the app but when I attempt to use a buildPublisher this copies every thing including .svn files & folders and ms CS files. I am using an MSBuild task to compile my source. I tried setting my MSBuild Output Directory to directory but this didn't seem to have any effect. What am I not understanding? Thanks

• .NET web service call slower when performed asynchronously

  I have an ASP.NET site, and some pages need to call a web service. I used Visual Studio's "Add Web Reference" to auto-generate classes and methods for the web service. When I call the service synchronously, i.e. objService.MethodName("param1"), a call might take a second or so. When I call it asynchronously, i.e., objService.BeginMethodName("param1", AddressOf MyCallback, Nothing), it typically takes about 6 seconds. When debugging, it appears that the bulk of the time is spent waiting between the completion of the BeginMethodName call and the beginning of MyCallback. Does the thread switching really incur that much overhead? Is there another reason for this?

  I'm building an Active Directory wrapper in VBNET 2.0 (can't use later .NET) in which I have the following: IUtilisateur IGroupe IUniteOrganisation These interfaces are implemented in internal classes (Friend in VBNET), so that I want to implement a façade in order to instiate each of the interfaces with their internal classes. This will allow the architecture a better flexibility, etc. Now, I want to test these classes (Utilisateur, Groupe, UniteOrganisation) in a different project within the same solution. However, these classes are internal. I would like to be able to instantiate them without going through my façade, but only for these tests, nothing more. • Implementing search functionality with multiple optional parameters against database table.

  Hello, I would like to check if there is a preferred design pattern for implementing search functionality with multiple optional parameters against database table where the access to the database should be only via stored procedures. The targeted platform is .Net with SQL 2005, 2008 backend, but I think this is pretty generic problem. For example, we have customer table and we want to provide search functionality to the UI for different parameters, like customer Type, customer State, customer Zip, etc., and all of them are optional and can be selected in any combinations. In other words, the user can search by customerType only or by customerType, customerZIp or any other possible combinations. There are several available design approaches, but all of them have some disadvantages and I would like to ask if there is a preferred design among them or if there is another approach. Generate sql where clause sql statement dynamically in the business tier, based on the search request from the UI, and pass it to a stored procedure as parameter. Something like @Where = ‘where CustomerZip = 111111’ Inside the stored procedure generate dynamic sql statement and execute it with sp_executesql. Disadvantage: dynamic sql, sql injection Implement a stored procedure with multiple input parameters, representing the search fields from the UI, and use the following construction for selecting the records only for the requested fields in the where statement. WHERE (CustomerType = @CustomerType OR @CustomerType is null ) AND (CustomerZip = @CustomerZip OR @CustomerZip is null ) AND ………………………………………… Disadvantage: possible performance issue for the sql. 3.Implement separate stored procedure for each search parameter combinations. Disadvantage: The number of stored procedures will increase rapidly with the increase of the search parameters, repeated code.

• Decompiling a *.DLL to assembly for .net in delphi 4

  I love my Delphi 4 but at the same time I see the need to talk to windows .net This is a recompiled dll that I found on sourceforge.net/projects/delphinet/ (DelphiNet03.zip) by some nice people that fund the dll from some were. The real answer is to make this dll so that fits into Delphi as true Delphi code, and not a dll clip on. So we can make objects that use dot net in Delphi. Because I’m not an assembly freak, I’m freaking out a little with a wee sweek for help! 1/ How do I link the asm code with the data info at the bottom of this code. Can some one show me which calls to look for to make this link to data. 2/ I need to find the beginning of all the procedures and functions, but I cannot find a ‘RET’ statement. I found this asm decomplier of http://www.cronos.cc/ that is so similar to Delphi that it only needs a little more convertion to get it into Delphi asm I think. It’s only taken me 3 hours to get the file into TMemo and to write a few lines to chop the line over in a stream and reload the memo. • .NET security mechanism to restrict access between two Types in the same project?

  Question: Is there a mechanism in the .NET Framework to hide one custom Type from another without using separate projects/assemblies? I'm using C# with ASP.NET in a Website project. Note: I'm not talking about access modifiers to hide members of a Type from another type - I mean to hide the Type itself. Background: I'm working in an ASP.NET Website project and the team has decided not to use separate project assemblies for different software layers. Therefore I'm looking for a way to have, for example, a DataAccess/ folder of which I disallow its classes to access other Types in the same ASP.NET Website project. In other words I want to fake the layers and have some kind of security mechanism around each layer to prevent it from accessing another. Obviously there's not a way to enforce this restriction using language-specific OO keywords so I am looking for something else, for example: maybe a permission framework or code access mechanism, maybe something that uses meta data like Attributes. Even something that restricts one namespace from accessing another. I'm unsure the final form it might take. If this were C++ I'd likely be using friend to make as solution, which doesn't translate to C# internal in this case although they're often compared. I don't really care whether the solution actually hides Types from each other or just makes them inaccessible; however I don't want to lock down one Type from all others, another reason access modifiers are not a solution. A runtime or design time answer will suffice. Looking for something easy to implement otherwise it's not worth the effort ...

  I'm having issues deserializing certain Guid properties of ORM-generated entities using protobuf-net. Here's a simplified example of the code (reproduces most elements of the scenario, but doesn't reproduce the behavior; I can't expose our internal entities, so I'm looking for clues to account for the exception). Say I have a class, Account with an AccountID read-only guid, and an AccountName read-write string. I serialize & immediately deserialize a clone. Deserializing throws an Incorrect wire-type deserializing Guid exception while deserializing. Here's example usage... Account acct = new Account() { AccountName = "Bob's Checking" }; Debug.WriteLine(acct.AccountID.ToString()); using (MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream()) { ProtoBuf.Serializer.Serialize<Account>(ms, acct); Debug.WriteLine(Encoding.UTF8.GetString(ms.GetBuffer())); ms.Position = 0; Account clone = ProtoBuf.Serializer.Deserialize<Account>(ms); Debug.WriteLine(clone.AccountID.ToString()); } And here's an example ORM'd class (simplified, but demonstrates the relevant semantics I can think of). Uses a shell game to deserialize read-only properties by exposing the backing field ("can't write" essentially becomes "shouldn't write," but we can scan code for instances of assigning to these fields, so the hack works for our purposes). (This is a subjective issue I have with all declarative serialization models; it's a ubiquitous pattern & I understand why it arose, but IMO, if we can put a man on the moon, then "normal" should be to have objects and serialization contracts decoupled. ;-) ) Thanks!

• .NET SerialPort DataReceived event not firing

  I have a WPF test app for evaluating event-based serial port communication (vs. polling the serial port). The problem is that the DataReceived event doesn't seem to be firing at all. I have a very basic WPF form with a TextBox for user input, a TextBlock for output, and a button to write the input to the serial port. VSPE has worked admirably in the past, and it's not clear why it would only malfunction with .NET's SerialPort class, but I mention it just in case. When I hit the button on my form to send the data, my Hyperterminal window (connected on COM2) shows that the data is getting through. Yes, I disconnect Hyperterminal when I want to test my form's ability to read the port. I've tried opening the port before wiring up the event. No change. I've read through another post here where someone else is having a similar problem. None of that info has helped me in this case. If I type into the console app, the WPF app DataReceived event fires, with the expected threading error (which I know how to deal with). If I type into the WPF app, the console app DataReceived event fires, and it echoes the data. I'm guessing the issue is somewhere in my use of the VSPE software, which is set up to treat one serial port as both input and output. And through some weirdness of the SerialPort class, one instance of a serial port can't be both the sender and receiver. Anyway, I think it's solved.

This web page takes a file and sends it to a central server, which then does something with the data and returns a result. I created this application some time ago and am coming back to it recently. I am getting some kind of configuration error right now, although this application used to work. When it stopped working, whenever I ran the page and sent the data to the central server, I would get this error: "Could not find default endpoint element that references contract 'CentralService.ICwCentralService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this contract could be found in the client element." Looking at some other issues on the net, I thought I might have had the answer. The service reference to the endpoint was contained in a separate project from the code that called it, but the configuration file in that project had no information about the endpoint. The strange thing is, though, I took those entries from another project that contacts the central server. That application has no problems contacting the central server using these settings. It's not a web page application, but I don't see how that would require these settings to change. I cannot tell what started causing these errors or when. I assume its something that changed outside of the application (e.g. the libraries referenced) that requires an update to the configuration in the application. I am currently using .NET 3.0 for all of my applications. Any help would be appreciated.

• Slow performance when utilizing Interop.DSOFile to search files by Custom Document Property

  I am new to the world of VB.NET and have been tasked to put together a little program to search a directory of about 2000 Excel spreadsheets and put together a list to display based on the value of a Custom Document Property within that spreadsheet file. Given that I am far from a computer programmer by education or trade, this has been an adventure. I've gotten it to work, the results are fine. The problem is, it takes well over a minute to run. It is being run over a LAN connection. When I run it locally (using a 'test' directory of about 300 files) it executes in about 4 seconds. I'm not sure even what to expect as a reasonable execution speed, so I thought I would ask here. The code is below, if anyone thinks changes there might be of use in speeding things up.   I have an ASP.NET application that accesses private key in a certificate in the certificates store. On Windows Server 2003 I was able to use winhttpcertcfg.exe to give private key access to the NETWORK SERVICE account. How do I give permissions to access a Private Key in a certificate in the certificate store (Local Computer\Personal) on a Windows Server 2008 R2 in an IIS 7.5 website? I've tried giving Full Trust access to "Everyone", "IIS AppPool\DefaultAppPool", "IIS_IUSRS", and everyother security account I could find using the Certificates MMC (Server 2008 R2). However the below code demonstrates that the code does not have access to the Private Key of a certificate that was imported with the private key. The code instead throws and error everytime the private key property is accessed. • How to create Large resumable download from a secured location .NET

But only one problem it doesn't allow for resume. I took the original code called it fetch.aspx and pass an orderNUM through the URL. fetch.aspx&ordernum=xxxxxxx It then reads the filename/location from the database occording to the ordernumber, and chunks it out from a secured location NOT under the webroot. I need a way to make this resumable, by the nature of the internet and large files people always get disconnected and would like to resume where they left off. But any resumable articles i've read, assume the file is within the webroot.. ie. http://www.devx.com/dotnet/Article/22533/1954 Great article and works well, but I need to stream from a secured location. I'm not a .NET coder at all, at best i can do a bit of coldfusion, if anyone could help me modify a handler to do this, i would really appreciate it. Requirements: I Have a working fetch.aspx script that functions well and uses the above code snippet as a base for the streamed downloading. Download files are large 600MB and are stored in a secured location outside of the webroot. Users click on the fetch.aspx to start the download, and would therefore be clicking it again if it was to fail. If the ext is a .ASPX and the file being sent is a AVI, clicking on it would completely bypass an IHTTP handler mapped to .AVI ext, so this confuses me From what I understand the browser will read and match etag value and file modified date to determine they are talking about the same file, then a subsequent accept-range is exchanged between the browser and IIS. Since this dialog happens with IIS, we need to use a handler to intercept and respond accordingly, but clicking on the link would send it to an ASPX file which the handeler needs to be on an AVI fiel.. Also confusing me. If there is a way to request the initial HTTP request header containing etag, accept-range into the normal .ASPX file, i could read those values and if the accept-range and etag exist, start chunking at that byte value somehow? but I couldn't find a way to transfer the http request headers since they seem to get lost at the IIS level. OrderNum which is passed in the URL string is unique and could be used as the ETag Response.AddHeader("ETag", request("ordernum")) Files need to be resumable and chunked out due to size. File extensions are .AVI so a handler could be written around it. IIS 6.0 Web Server Any help would really be appreciated, i've been reading and reading and downloading code, but none of the examples given meet my situation with the original file being streamed from outside of the webroot. Please help me get a handle on these httphandlers :)
