• Quick run through of the WP7 Developer Tools January 2011

  In case you haven’t heard the latest WP7 Developers Tool update was released yesterday and contains a few goodies. First you need to go and grab the bits here. You can install them in any order, but I installed the WindowsPhoneDeveloperResources_en-US_Patch1.msp first. Then the VS10-KB2486994-x86.exe. They install silently. In other words, you would need to check Programs and Features and look in Installed Updates to see if they installed successfully. Like the screenshot below: Once you get them installed you can try out a few new features. Like Copy and Paste. Just fire up your application and put a TextBox on it and Select the Text and you will have the option highlighted in red above the text. Once you select it you will have the option to paste it. (see red rectangle below). Another feature is the Windows Phone Capability Detection Tool – This tool detects the phone capabilities used by your application. This will prevent you from submitting an app to the marketplace that says it uses x feature but really does not. How do you use it? Well navigate out to either directory: %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.0\Tools\CapDetect %ProgramFiles (x86)%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows Phone\v7.0\Tools\CapDetect and run the following command: CapabilityDetection.exe Rules.xml YOURWP7XAPFILEOUTPUTDIRECTORY So, in my example you will see my app only requires the ID_CAP_MICROPHONE. Let’s see what the WmAppManifest.xml says in our WP7 Project: Whoa! That’s a lot of extra stuff we don’t need. We can delete unused capabilities safely now. Some of the other fixes are: (Copied straight from Microsoft) Fixes a text selection bug in pivot and panorama controls. In applications that have pivot or panorama controls that contain text boxes, users can unintentionally change panes when trying to copy text. To prevent this problem, open your application, recompile it, and then resubmit it to the Windows Phone Marketplace. Windows Phone Connect Tool – Allows you to connect your phone to a PC when Zune® software is not running and debug applications that use media APIs. For more information, see How to: Use the Connect Tool. Updated Bing Maps Silverlight Control – Includes improvements to gesture performance when using Bing™ Maps Silverlight® Control. • Launchpad ppa supporting multiple versions of Ubuntu

  Is it possible for a launchpad ppa to support multiple Ubuntu versions such as 10.04 and 12.04 when the package itself was built on a 12.04 machine? When trying to add the ppa to a older machine, it gives an error saying it was made on a 12.04 system and that it could not install. I'd like sudo get-apt-install my-app to work with both 10.04 and 12.04, and I am new to packaging and ppa's so I do not know if anything like this exists. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

• What does the Spring framework do? Should I use it? Why or why not?

  So, I'm starting a brand-new project in Java, and am considering using Spring. Why am I considering Spring? Because lots of people tell me I should use Spring! Seriously, any time I've tried to get people to explain what exactly Spring is or what it does, they can never give me a straight answer. I've checked the intros on the SpringSource site, and they're either really complicated or really tutorial-focused, and none of them give me a good idea of why I should be using it, or how it will make my life easier. Sometimes people throw around the term "dependency injection", which just confuses me even more, because I think I have a different understanding of what that term means. Anyway, here's a little about my background and my app : Been developing in Java for a while, doing back-end web development. Yes, I do a ton of unit testing. To facilitate this, I typically make (at least) two versions of a method : one that uses instance variables, and one that only uses variables that are passed in to the method. The one that uses instance variables calls the other one, supplying the instance variables. When it comes time to unit test, I use Mockito to mock up the objects and then make calls to the method that doesn't use instance variables. This is what I've always understood "dependency injection" to be. My app is pretty simple, from a CS perspective. Small project, 1-2 developers to start with. Mostly CRUD-type operations with a a bunch of search thrown in. Basically a bunch of RESTful web services, plus a web front-end and then eventually some mobile clients. I'm thinking of doing the front-end in straight HTML/CSS/JS/JQuery, so no real plans to use JSP. Using Hibernate as an ORM, and Jersey to implement the webservices. I've already started coding, and am really eager to get a demo out there that I can shop around and see if anyone wants to invest. So obviously time is of the essence. I understand Spring has quite the learning curve, plus it looks like it necessitates a whole bunch of XML configuration, which I typically try to avoid like the plague. But if it can make my life easier and (especially) if make it can make development and testing faster, I'm willing to bite the bullet and learn Spring. So please. Educate me. Should I use Spring? Why or why not?

• Chrome in the launcher does not open with keyboard hotkey (Super + #)

  I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and I have chrome as the first application locked in my launcher. When I click it or press Super+1 the Chrome icon just flashes, but never opens the app. All other apps open fine. I have to manually find it in Unity and launch it from there, or from Terminal. I've set this to launch properly on another machine but I don't know why it's not working on my laptop. Why does this happen?

• What to use C++ for?

  I really love C++. However, I'm struggling to find good uses for it lately. It is still the language to use if you're building huge systems with huge performance requirements. Like backend/infrastructure code at Google and Facebook, or high-end games. But I don't get to do stuff like that. It's also a good choice for code that runs close to the hardware. I'd like to do more low-level stuff, but it isn't part of my job, and I can't think of useful private projects that would involve that. Traditionally, C++ was also a good choice for rich client applications, but those are mostly written in C# and Obj-C lately - and aren't really that important anymore, with everything being a web app. Or a mobile app, which are mostly written in Obj-C and Java. And of course, web-based desktop and mobile apps are quite prominent, too. At my job, I work mostly on web applications, using Java, JavaScript and Groovy. Java is a good/popular choice for non-Google-scale backends, Groovy (or Python, or Ruby or Node.js) is pretty good for the server-side of web apps and JavaScript is the only real choice for the client-side. Even the little games I'm writing in my spare time are lately mostly written in JavaScript, so they can run in the browser. So what would you suggest I could use C++ for? I'm aware that this question is very similar. However, I don't want to learn C++, I was a professional C++ programmer for years. I want to keep doing it and find good new use cases for it. I know that I can use C++ for web apps/games. I could even compile C++ to JavaScript with Emscripten. However, it doesn't seem like a good idea. I'm looking for something C++ is really good at to stay competent in the language. If your answer is: Just give up and forget C++, you'll probably never need it again, so be it.

• google analytics - real-time user stats vs audience overview user stats

  When looking at the real-time analytics reporting for our app, it shows around 150-180 users, say around 10AM (our peak usage time). When I look at the Audience Overview report for the same day (hourly breakdown), the number of users shown for the 10AM hour is over 1000. I'm sure this has to do with some sort of aggregation, but I would like to know more about how these two numbers are calculated in order to understand it.

• Can't repeatedly reload uwsgi

  In Ubuntu 12.04 I can only reload my uwsgi app once, after this reload and force-reload fail. This appears to be because after the first reload the process names change from uwsgi to uwsgi-core, and the reload script looks for uwsgi processes with specific pids. I'm not sure if this is just a bug, and if so is there somewhere sensible for me to report it? Otherwise is there something I could be doing wrong to cause this?
