  • Language Prejudices

    I've been researching programming languages, in hopes of learning to program. Since I've heard a lot of good things about Ruby, I went ahead and purchased The Pragmatic guide to Ruby. I understand that there is a lot of hype about Ruby on Rails. Because ruby lets you program scripts, applications, and internet helped me to decide on learning Ruby vs other languages. Today I watched a talk about google go, and it's really caught my attention. Coincidently I stumbled on a talk about jruby. I've been under the impression that java applications are bloated an slow. However the speaker made a point of what is wrong with Ruby, and how Jruby diagnosed Ruby's shortcomings. All that said. I would like to hear peoples opinions on Jruby vs Ruby, and if Ruby is working on fixing these "short comings". Also, how do you, the programming community feel about "go" and if I'm making a mistake learning Ruby instead of go, or Jruby. Appreciate your advice and opinions Thanks,

  • How to tell the difference between a VBscript is run from command line or by clicking it in a window?

    All I want to do is differentiate between the program being run by the command line or by clicking the test.vbs file in a window. If you run the script by typing C:\testFolder\test.vbs in a command prompt, then I want the program to run differently than if you double clicked test.vbs in the testFolder. Is there some system variable that I can use to differentiate between the two scenarios? I first attempted to use WScript.Fullname to determine if the pathname ended in cscript or wscript. But that didn't work so well. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

    I am building a mail system. The inbox is only supposed to grab the last message (one with the highest time value) of a concatenation of user and sender, where the user or sender is the user ID.     I am trying to implemet django-updown https://github.com/weluse/django-updown. When I try to add vote trough the admin panel it says Value 1 not a valid choice.     If i want to take all functions and variables declared in my program in firefox i just iterate 'window' object. For example if i have var a=function() {}; i can use a(); or window.a(); in firefox, but not in IE. I have function iterating window object and writing all function names declared in program like that: for (smthng in window) { document.write(smthng); } works in FF, in IE there are some stuff but nothing i declare before. Any ideas?

  • Get the folder where the last mailitem was moved in Outlook?

    I have a vbscript macro that I'm using in Outlook. It moves a mailitem to some folder, say X. After I run the macro and I try to manually move a mailitem from Outlook with Control-v, it defaults to folder X. I would like Control-v to default to the folder that it would have used before I ran the macro. Is there some way in VBScript to find out what folder the last mailitem was move to, and to return that to be the default folder after I run my script? Or is there a way to move a mailitem in my script without the destination folder being remembered by Outlook Control-v after I run the script? Thanks for any hints.

  • Advanced Registry Monitoring

    I'm attempting to create a small utility to watch for the creation (or modification) of a specific registry key, and to kill the process responsible for causing that registry modification. I have had success in watching the changes to the registry via a class called 'RegistryMonitor', however it does not give you any information on what process initiated the registry call, through some googling I found that a library called 'EasyHook' should be able to do what I want, but all the documentation states that its designed for a per-application hook. The program itself is a temporary security patch, until our vendors come out with an official security update. As best I can tell there isn't a way to do exactly what I want to accomplish from C#, which is the only language I can comfortable write, test and execute software in. Any help on this would be appreciated I'm considering watching the registry changes via the program I already have, then if the change is discovered (the pc is already infected) running RKill and locking down the PC to prevent the issue from getting any worse

  • Are instance initializers good or bad?

    I personally quite like instance initializers - I use them to assign default values to things such as collections so when writing constructors I don't have to remember to assign them the same default values each time. It seems quite elegant to me - avoids annoying NPE's popping up and avoids duplicate code. A private method doesn't seem as nice because a) it can't assign values to final fields, b) it could be run elsewhere in code and c) the method still needs to be explicitly called at the start of each constructor. However, the flip side with others I have spoken to is that they're confusing, some people reading the code might not understand what they do or when they're called and thus they could cause more problems than they solve. Are proper use of these initializers something to be encouraged or avoided? Or is it an "each to their own" case?

    Hi, A rather simple question; how to find the path of the local directory in which my exe is placed? As-in I have an .exe and in the program I have to create a txt file in the directory where the exe is! [language - C#] So, if the exe is in C:/Temp and is started from there; my txt should be created in C:/Temp If the user wishes to move the exe to D:/Temp and runs from there; I should be able to create the txt file in D:/Temp I tried the Directory.GetCurrentDirectory() but that returns the directory of the execution of the program!

  • Skip reading strings in matlab

    Is there is easy command in matlab which prevents program from crashing when it reads characters? I use xlsread to read a (20 400) matrix data , the first row and column get disregarded as they have headers, so that: data = xlsread ( ' C:\file.xls') results in data with a size of (19 399). I have a problem, some cells have missing data and it's written ' missing' and on some data sets i have headers reappear in middle. Is there a way to skip these characters without the program crashing and me having to open the file in excel and deleting those fields? Thanks

    I am writing a program with Qt, and I would like it to show a dialog box with a Exit | Restart choice whenever an error is thrown somewhere in the code. What I did causes a crash and I really can't figure out why it happens, I was hoping you could help me understanding what's going on. The code I've written above works, but as far as I understand, there's a memory leak: I should uncomment the line //delete window_; in My_Application::exit() and My_Application::restart(). But when I do that, the program crashes when I click restart (or exit but who cares). (I'm not sure this is useful, in fact it might be misleading, but here's what my debugger tells me: a segmentation fault occurs in QWidgetPrivate::PaintOnScreen() const which is called by a function called by a function... called by My_Application::notify()) When I do some std::couts, I notice that the program runs through the entire restart() function and in fact through the entire notify() function before it crashes. I have no idea why it crashes. Thanks in advance for your insights! Update: I've noticed that My_Application::notify() is called very often. For example, it is called a bunch of times while the error dialog box is open, also during the execution of the restart function. The crash actually occurs in the subfunction QApplication::notify(receiver, event). This is not too surprising in light of the previous remark (the receiver has probably been deleted) But even if I forbid the function My_Application::notify() to do anything while restart() is executed, it still crashes (after having called My_Application::notify() a bunch of times, like 15 times, isn't that weird)? How should I proceed? Maybe I should say (to make the question slightly more relevant) that my class My_Application also has a "restore" function, which I've not copied here to try to keep things short. If I just had that restart feature I wouldn't bother too much, but I do want to have that restore feature. I should also say that if I keep the code with the "delete window_" commented, the problem is not only a memory leak, it still crashes sometimes apparently. There must surely be a way to fix this! But I'm clueless, I'd really appreciate some help! Thanks in advance.

    I just whipped up a program to export a dataset to a text file and am running into a issue with data from an observation being wrapped to the line below in the exported file. Below is a stripped down version of my program and the text seems to be wrapping at column 1025. Does anyone happen to know why this is occurring and how to go about ensuring that record data stays on its own row?   • [WPF] When Should I Retrieve Values from Textbox?

    Suppose I have a Window with TextBoxes I want to use the values. Right now I'm thinking of either: 1) Updating each associated value once the cursor is out of focus, and once the user presses Ok I start the program 2) Once the user presses Ok, I retrieve all the values at once then start the program I'm not sure which one is better though. First alternative seems more modular, but there's more semantic coupling since I each new box is supposed to be updating its respective value. I realize this isn't all that important, but I'm trying to understand when to centralize and when not to. Other better approachers are appreciated too.

  • NetBackup with VSS and Instant Recovery - Failing to delete old snapshots

    We are attempting to implement Microsoft VSS for snap-shotting in our NetBackup 6.5.3.1 environment. The clients are both 32 & 64 bit Windows 2003 Server. Snapshot parameters are: Instant recovery is enabled Maximum snapshots = 1 Provider type = 1 (System) Snapshot attribute = 1 (Differential) All backups successfully complete, and VSS shadows are successfully created both for the snapshot backup and for the open files (shadow copy components). The Issue: NetBackup is not clearing or overwriting old snapshots with each successive backup. When we list shadows, and shadow storage, it is increasing and increasing. IT is not honouring the Maximum Snapshot setting. The Logs: The bpfis log doesn’t really appear to show any errors other than for methods which we are not employing (VxVM, Flashsnap, etc.).   • Windows 7 Boot to VHD using a VHD clone of the system drive

    This seems like a not too difficult problem, and, after several hurdles, I'm maddeningly close. But I can't quite get there. I'm running Windows 7 in development shop. I want to start using VS2010 to work on some stuff that won't be released for awhile. My boss said no beta code on the production machine, but I could run VS2010 for this project IF I could do it in an isolated environment, like a virtual PC. Well, I've used the beta and RC of Win7 on VPC's before, and it was painfully slow because of the VPC environment. But everyone has been singing the praises of Windows 7's boot-to-VHD capability, where only the disk is virtualized, and you're actually running on the hardware. Supposed to be little slower, but nowhere near the speed penalty of VPC. I've spent a fair amount of time getting everything installed the way I want it. So I figured, I'll just clone my system drive using Disk2VHD, and boot off of that, and then install VS2010 onto that. (I keep most of my user data, including all my projects, in a separate partition, so that wouldn't have to be duplicated and would still be available.) Well, I had some difficulties with that, owing mainly to the fact that I was using an old version of Disk2VHD - (get the latest if you're going to try it.) But I did finally get it to boot. (Scott Hanselman has a good blog post on boot to VHD). But it wasn't exactly what I was expecting or hoping for. What I expected was that the VHD would become the C: drive, and the original (physical) C: drive would be either hidden or mounted under a different letter, and thus isolated and protected from any changes. What you actually get is that the VHD becomes the D: drive AND you boot from the D: drive, BUT your original C: drive is still there. Which is sort of okay EXCEPT that the Registry on the VHD is a clone of the Registry on C: drive, and includes many hard-coded references to C:. So the result is that some things come from (and modify) D: (the VHD), but some things come from (and modify) C:. (If you open a cmd prompt and do a SET to look at your environment variables, you will see a mixture of D:\ and C:\ paths.) So I don't really have an isolated environment. Most importantly, %ProgramFiles% is still set to C:\Program Files. What I really need is a tool that can access the registry files on the mounted VHD AS FILES, not as registry entries, and do a global search and replace on all the C:\ in strings to D:. I haven't found such a program. (I've tried to do it with a program called Registry Replace, but, even when running as Administrator, there are certain entries that the Registry won't let you change.) Does anyone know of one? Or any other solution to my problem (other than starting from scratch with a clean VHD and installing Win7 and all my programs on it.)?

  • Dual head setup for Ubuntu 10.04.1 and Windows XP Pro with same hardware configuration

    Hello. I have a Dell OptiPlex 360 workstation at work, with 2 x ATI RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] graphics cards installed, which are attached to two identical 19" HII flat panel monitors. I'm using the open source Radeon driver with Ubuntu, and the proprietary drivers with Windows. The good news is that dual head configuration works for both OSes. The bad news is, I have to use a different hardware configuration for each OS to achieve this. Hardware config #1: Dual monitors work for Windows XP Pro like this: First display -> external VGA port Second display -> DVI input on gfx card Hardware config #2: Dual monitors work for Ubuntu 10.04.1 like this: First display -> VGA port on gfx card Second display -> DVI input on gfx card I connected up the displays according to Config #2 and booted up Windows, which resulted in a mirror image on both screens. I was unable to login, as the login box was not visible. I unplugged the VGA lead from gfx card and plugged it into the external VGA port (Config #1) - Windows dual head works again, but the VGA-connected screen is not recognised by Ubuntu and remains in standby mode. Is it possible to configure a dual head setup for Ubuntu using Config #1, or am I missing something? I tried setting up dual monitors using Config #1, this morning which didn't work.     SQL Server (2012 Enterprise) Browser service failing I have a problem as described below: I have an instance of SQL Server 2012 Enterprise (thanks to MSDN) for local development on my PC. I try to start SQL server Browser Service from SQL Server Configuration Manager and it takes a long time to fail, then fails with: The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable error logs for details. I checked event logs and found these errors in this order (all within the same 1-second time frame): The SQL Server Browser service port is unavailable for listening, or invalid. The SQL Server Browser service was unable to establish SQL instance and connectivity discovery. The SQL Server Browser is enabling SQL instance and connectivity discovery support. The SQL Server Browser service was unable to establish Analysis Services discovery. The SQL Server Browser service has started. The SQL Server Browser service has shutdown. I checked firewall rules and both port 1433 (TCP) and 1434 (UDP) are wide open, just as well - the programs and service binary had been "allowed through windows firewall". I started the "Analysis Services" service by hand and it works fine. Browser still won't start. Some History: Installed SQL 2008 R2 express advanced Installed SQL2012 Express advanced Uninstalled SQL 2008 R2 express advanced Installed 2012 SSDT and lots of features with Express install Installed a unique instance of SQL 2012 Enterprise with all features Uninstalled SSDT and reinstalled SSDT with Enterprise (solved a different problem) Uninstalled SQL 2012 Express Uninstalled SQL 2012 Enterprise Removed anything with "SQL" in the name from Control panel "Programs and features" Installed SQL 2012 Enterprise without Analysis services (This is where I noticed SQL Browser service was failing to start even on the install) Added the feature of Analysis Services (and everything else) via the installer (Browser continued to fail to start on the install) ======================== Other interesting facts: opening a command window with administrator and trying to run sqlbrowser.exe manually yielded: Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. A possible approach would be to somehow really uninstall everything and delete all files related to SQL... is that a good idea, and how do I do that?

  • Cisco ASA (Client VPN) to LAN - through second VPN to second LAN

    We have 2 site that is linked by an IPSEC VPN to remote Cisco ASAs: Site 1 1.5Mb T1 Connection Cisco(1) 2841 Site 2 1.5Mb T1 Connection Cisco 2841 In addition: Site 1 has a 2nd WAN 3Mb bonded T1 Connection Cisco 5510 that connects to same LAN as Cisco(1) 2841. Basically, Remote Access (VPN) users connecting through Cisco ASA 5510 needs access to a service at the end of Site 2. This is due to the way the service is sold - Cisco 2841 routers are not under our management and it is setup to allow connection from local LAN VLAN 1 IP address 10.20.0.0/24. My idea is to have all traffic from Remote Users through Cisco ASA destined for Site 2 to go via the VPN between Site 1 and Site 2. The end result being all traffic that hits Site 2 has come via Site 1. I'm struggling to find a great deal of information on how this is setup. So, firstly, can anyone confirm that what I'm trying to achieve is possible? Secondly, can anyone help me to correct the configuration bellow or point me in the direction of an example of such a configuration?
