• Wordpress: Create a customized role / user

  Hi, I’m farely new to Wordpress but are working on putting a page together which has a very simple purpose. I’m creating it for a customer with little or none IT experience so I want to create a user he can use to login and edit his pages – and nothing more. No settings, no comments, no posts, no links, no nothing, just create, delete and edit pages and maybe edit his own profile or at least his E-mail and password. I can see that wordpress has some predefined roles for users but none of them completely does what I want and they either has to little or to many rights. I’ve been looking at the wordpress page http://codex.wordpress.org/Roles_and_Capabilities but can’t seem to get a clear answer. Is it in any way possible for me to create my own user role (e.g. customer) where I can set the rights I want for him? Thanks Sincerely Mestika

• BindingList<T> and reflection!

  Background Working in .NET 2.0 Here, reflecting lists in general. I was originally using t.IsAssignableFrom(typeof(IEnumerable)) to detect if a Property I was traversing supported the IEnumerable Interface. (And thus I could cast the object to it safely) However this code was not evaluating to True when the object is a BindingList<T>. Next I tried to use t.IsSubclassOf(typeof(IEnumerable)) and didn't have any luck either. (Already Working) Once inside this function, given the object the property resides on, and the PropertyInfo related, get the value of the property, cast it to an IEnumerable (assuming it's possible) and then iterate through each child and call ReflectObject(...) on the child with the count variable.

• Office 2003 interop problems, interface, method not found.

  This problem is making me crazy. Actually I have multiple problems. First one: Why on earth are is there a _Worksheet and a Worksheetinterface in the Excel interop. They both look the same, except for some attributes on the methods. It's confusing! Second of all: my job today is making a VB.NET file more strict, by settings Option Strict On and Option Explicit On While it works for most files, I'm bumping into a problem. Here's a little code piece: Private _pivotTable As Excel.PivotTable With _pivotTable pvf = .AddDataField(pvc) End With PivotTable.AddDataField is defined on the MSDN page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.office.interop.excel.pivottable.adddatafield(office.11).aspx When I check my local Interop dll w/ Reflector that method is NOT there. When I run the application, and step through it, the method just works. When I try to step INTO the method, I get an LateBound Exception. WTF? • Getting "" at the beginning of my XML File after save()

  I'm opening an existing XML file with c# and I replace some nodes in there. All works fine. Just after I save it, I get the following characters at the beginning of the file:  (EF BB BF in HEX) The whole first line: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?> The rest of the file looks like a normal XML file. The simplified code is here: XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument(); doc.Load(xmlSourceFile); XmlNode translation = doc.SelectSingleNode("//trans-unit[@id='127']"); translation.InnerText = "testing"; doc.Save(xmlTranslatedFile); I'm using a C# WinForm Application. With .NET 4.0. Any ideas? Why would it do that? Can we disable that somehow? It's for Adobe InCopy and it does not open it like this. • Partial Classes - are they bad design?

  Hello, I'm wondering why the 'partial class' concept even exists in .NET. I'm working on an application and we are reading a (actually very good) book relavant to the development platform we are implementing at work. In the book he provides a large code base /wrapper around the platform API and explains how he developed it as he teaches different topics about the platform development. Anyway, long story short - he uses partial classes, all over the place, as a way to fake multiple inheritence in C# (IMO). Why he didnt just split the classes up into multiple ones and use composition is beyond me. He will have 3 'partial class' files to make up his base class, each w/ 3-500 lines of code... And does this several times in his API. Do you find this justifiable? If it were me, I'd have followed the S.R.P. and created multiple classes to handle different required behaviors, then create a base class that has instances of these classes as members (e.g. composition). Why did MS even put partial class into the framework?? They removed the ability to expand/collapse all code at each scope level in C# (this was allowed in C++) because it was obviously just allowing bad habits - partial class is IMO the same thing. I guess my quetion is: Can you explain to me when there would be a legitimate reason to ever use a partial class? I do not mean this to be a rant / war thread. I'm honeslty looking to learn something here. Thanks

• Simple string encryption in .NET and Javascript

  I'm developing an ASP.NET MVC application in which I want to encrypt a short string on the server, using C#, and send it to the client-side. Then on the client-side it will be decrypted through Javascript code. Any thoughts on how to implement this? Do you know of a simple encryption algorithm (doesn't have to be bullet-proof secure) that can be easily translated from C# to Javascript or vice-versa? NOTE: I could do this entirely in C# and do the decryption through Ajax, but I'd prefer not to do it this way, as I want to reduce website traffic as much as possible.

• URL with no query parameters - How to distinguish.

  Env: .NET 1.1 I got into this situation. Where I need to give a URL that someone could redirect them to our page. When they redirect they also need to tell us, what message I need to display on the page. Initially I thought of something like this. http://example.com/a.aspx?reason=100 http://example.com/a.aspx?reason=101 ... http://example.com/a.aspx?reason=115 So when we get this url based on 'reason' we can display different message. But the problem turns out to be that they can not send any query parameters at all. They want 15 difference URL's since they can't send query params. It doesn't make any sense to me to created 15 pages just to display a message. Any smart ideas,that have one URL and pass the 'reason' thru some means? EDIT: Options I'm thinking based on Answers Try HttpRequest.PathInfo or Second option I was thinking was to have a httphanlder read read the path like this - HttpContext.Request.Path based on path act. Ofcourse I will have some 15 entries like this in web.config. <add verb="*" path="reason1.ashx" type="WebApplication1.Class1, WebApplication1" /> <add verb="*" path="reason2.ashx" type="WebApplication1.Class1, WebApplication1" /> Does that look clean?

• Calculate location and number of intersections between multiple date/time ranges?

  I need to calculate the location of intersections between multiple date ranges, and the number of overlapping intersections. Then I need to show which date/time ranges overlap each of those intersecting sections. It is slightly more complicated than that so I'll do my best to explain by providing an example. I am working in VB.Net, but C# examples are acceptable as well as I work in both. We have several high risk tasks that involve the same system. Below I have three example jobs named HR1/2/3/4 with start and end date/times. • Some languages don't work when using Word 2007 Spellcheck from Interop

  I'm using the Word 2007 spellchecker via Interop in a VB.net desktop app. When using the default language (English), it works fine. If I set the language to French via LanguageId, it also works. But if I set it to French (Canadian) (Word.WdLanguageID.wdFrenchCanadian), it doesn't work. There's no error message, it simply runs and says the document contains no errors. I know it does, if I paste the exact same text into Word itself and run it with the French (Canadian) dictionary, it finds errors. Just why that dictionary doesn't work is kind of a mystery to me.   I am looking at a possibility to change my ASP.NET 2.0 app to Mono framework. I have used the mono analyzer tool and it does detect some p/invoke and interop dependencies. For ex. 1) We use excel interops and on linux we are looking to use staroffice/Openoffice instead. Is there an easy way of substituting excel with staroffice? (I know it sounds bizarre, but just don't want to miss out in case anyone has done it already.) 2) LDAP auth: What could be the best alternative in Ubuntu (or an other flavour of Linux) ? 3) Is there an ajax framework for mono? Preferably with similar controls as Atlas?? I hope I am not too ambitious here.. thanks.

  Hi, well I know from my asp.net mvc experience that you can have attributes that handle exceptions (HandleErrorAttribute). As far as I can tell the Controller class has some OnException event which may be integral to this behaviour. However, I want to do something similar in my own code: dream example: public String MyProperty { [ExceptionBehaviour(typeof(FormatException), MyExEnum.ClearValue)] set { _thing.prop = Convert.ToThing(value); } } .... The code above obviously makes very little sense, but is close to the kind of thing I wish to do. I want the attribute on the property set accessor to catch some type of exception and then deal with this in some custom way (or even just swallow it). Any ideas guys?

• getting a "default" concrete class that implements an interface

  I am implementing a custom (and generic) Json.net serializer and hit a bump in the road that I could use some help on. When the deserializer is mapping to a property that is an interface, how can I best determine what sort of object to construct to deserialize to to place into the interface property. I have the following: [JsonConverter(typeof(MyCustomSerializer<foo>))] class foo { int Int1 { get; set; } IList<string> StringList {get; set; } } My serializer properly serializes this object, and but when it comes back in, and I try to map the json parts to to object, I have a JArray and an interface. I am currently instantiating anything enumerable like List as theList = Activator.CreateInstance(property.PropertyType); This works create to work with in the deserialization process, but when the property is IList, I get runtime complaints (obviously) about not being able to instantiate an interface. So how would I know what type of concrete class to create in a case like this? Thank you

• Best approach to limit users to a single node of a given content type in Drupal

  I need to limit users to a single node of a given content type. So a user can only create one node of TypeX. I've come up with two approaches. Which would be better to use... 1) Edit the node/add/typex menu item to check the database to see if the user has already created a node of TypeX, as well as if they have permissions to create it. 2) When a user creates a node of TypeX, assign them to a different role that doesn't have permissions to create that type of node. In approach 1, I have to make an additional database call on every page load to see if they should be able to see the "Create TypeX" (node/add/typex). But in approach 2, I have to maintain two separate roles. Which approach would you use?

• How do I get events to execute on the "main thread"

  I have 2 classes, one is frmMain a windows form and the other is a class in vb.NET 2003. frmMain contains a start button which executes the monitor function in the other class. My question is, I am manually adding the event handlers -- when the events are executed how do I get them to excute on the "main thread". Because when the tooltip balloon pops up at the tray icon it displays a second tray icon instead of popping up at the existing tray icon. I can confirm that this is because the events are firing on new threads because if I try to display a balloon tooltip from frmMain it will display on the existing tray icon. • How to deal with a flaw in System.Data.DataTableExtensions.CopyToDataTable()

  Hey guys, so I've come across something which is perhaps a flaw in the Extension method .CopyToDataTable. This method is used by Importing (in VB.NET) System.Data.DataTableExtensions and then calling the method against an IEnumerable. You would do this if you want to filter a Datatable using LINQ, and then restore the DataTable at the end. i.e: Imports System.Data.DataRowExtensions Imports System.Data.DataTableExtensions Public Class SomeClass Private Shared Function GetData() As DataTable Dim Data As DataTable Data = LegacyADO.NETDBCall Data = Data.AsEnumerable.Where(Function(dr) dr.Field(Of Integer)("SomeField") = 5).CopyToDataTable() Return Data End Function End Class In the example above, the "WHERE" filtering might return no results. If this happens CopyToDataTable throws an exception because there are no DataRows. Why? The correct behavior should be to return a DataTable with Rows.Count = 0. Can anyone think of a clean workaround to this, in such a way that whoever calls CopyToDataTable doesn't have to be aware of this issue? System.Data.DataTableExtensions is a Static Class so I can't override the behavior....any ideas? Have I missed something? cheers UPDATE: I have submitted this as an issue to Connect. • Code Contracts: Do we have to specify Contract.Requires(...) statements redundantly in delegating me

  I'm intending to use the new .NET 4 Code Contracts feature for future development. This made me wonder if we have to specify equivalent Contract.Requires(...) statements redundantly in a chain of methods. I think a code example is worth a thousand words: public bool CrushGodzilla(string weapon, int velocity) { Contract.Requires(weapon != null); // long code return false; } public bool CrushGodzilla(string weapon) { Contract.Requires(weapon != null); // specify contract requirement here // as well??? return this.CrushGodzilla(weapon, int.MaxValue); } For runtime checking it doesn't matter much, as we will eventually always hit the requirement check, and we will get an error if it fails. However, is it considered bad practice when we don't specify the contract requirement here in the second overload again? Also, there will be the feature of compile time checking, and possibly also design time checking of code contracts. It seems it's not yet available for C# in Visual Studio 2010, but I think there are some languages like Spec# that already do. These engines will probably give us hints when we write code to call such a method and our argument currently can or will be null. So I wonder if these engines will always analyze a call stack until they find a method with a contract that is currently not satisfied? Furthermore, here I learned about the difference between Contract.Requires(...) and Contract.Assume(...). I suppose that difference is also to consider in the context of this question then?

• Strange Effect with Overridden Properties and Reflection

  I've come across a strange behaviour in .NET/Reflection and cannot find any solution/explanation for this: Class A { public string TestString { get; set; } } Class B : A { public override string TestString { get { return "x"; } } } Since properties are just pairs of functions (get_PropName(), set_PropName()) overriding only the "get" part should leave the "set" part as it is in the base class. And this is just what happens if you try to instanciate class B and assign a value to TestString, it uses the implementation of class A. But what happens if I look at the instantiated object of class B in reflection is this: PropertyInfo propInfo = b.GetType().GetProperty("TestString"); propInfo.CanRead ---> true propInfo.CanWrite ---> false(!) And if I try to invoke the setter from reflection with: propInfo.SetValue("test", b, null); I'll even get an ArgumentException with the following message: Property set method not found. Is this as expected? Because I don't seem to find a combination of BindingFlags for the GetProperty() method that returns me the property with a working get/set pair from reflection.

• Rails + simple role system through associative table

  So I have the Ninja model which has many Hovercrafts through ninja_hovercrafts (which stores the ninja_id and the hovercraft_id). It is of my understanding that this kind of arrangement should be set in a way that the associative table stores only enough information to bind two different classes. But I'd like to use the associative table to work as a very streamlined authorization hub on my application. So i'd also like this table to inform my system if this binding makes the ninja the pilot or co-pilot of a given hovercraft, through a "role" field in the table. My questions are: Is this ugly? Is this normal? Are there methods built into rails that would help me to automagically create Ninjas and Hovercrafts associations WITH the role? For exemple, could I have a nested form to create both ninjas and hcs in a way that the role field in ninjas_hovercrafts would be also filled? If managing my application roles this way isn't a good idea, whats the non-resource heavy alternative (my app is being designed trying to avoid scalability problems such as excessive joins, includes, etc) thank you

• How to dynamically change fields in an .NET ORM

  I'm working in ASP.NET in an application where often users want to add fields or change field names. I'd like to be able to have an xml schema in place that is parsed and a dynamic object model created from it that can be accessed throughout the application. My initial reaction is that this is not realistic. I think there is flexibility about the dynamic nature of it. I think the people I'm trying to build this for wouldn't mind recompiling. Even if the app recompiled, I don't know how to abstract away enough in my code access the data to allow for users changing property names, etc. How can you write LINQ when the properties might change? In short, there's two questions here: 1) is there a way to dynamically generate an object model of the database and 2) is there a way to abstract away enough so that code accessing the database doesn't break when properties change?

• CLR - Common language runtime detected an invalid program in VS.NET

  I have been using Visual Studio 2008 quite long but lately I am getting this message when I am developing an application in C#: Common language runtime detected an invalid program This happens when I try to enter to the properties of a component (text masked box properties, tool box property etc..). But it really became a problem when I tried to launch an other solution that I downloaded from the Developer's 5 star program of Microsoft and it didn't allowed me to launch at all and just got the same problem... I looked for the answer at google but just got some clues about people having the same vague error but in different situations like in ASP.NET I would appreciate any help with this issue... :( I do not want to reinstall VS, that will be my last resource... Update: I never figured out what the problem was so I installed a virtual machine with Windows XP on it, there I only have Visual Studio and Netbeans.

  Hi All, I am setting up a Continuous Integration server. I have one issue that doesn't seem to be mentioned in the tutorials. I have a ASP.net Web Application that I need to compile and them publish. My Problem is that I seem to be able to compile the app but when I attempt to use a buildPublisher this copies every thing including .svn files & folders and ms CS files. I am using an MSBuild task to compile my source. I tried setting my MSBuild Output Directory to directory but this didn't seem to have any effect. What am I not understanding? Thanks

• .NET web service call slower when performed asynchronously

  I have an ASP.NET site, and some pages need to call a web service. I used Visual Studio's "Add Web Reference" to auto-generate classes and methods for the web service. When I call the service synchronously, i.e. objService.MethodName("param1"), a call might take a second or so. When I call it asynchronously, i.e., objService.BeginMethodName("param1", AddressOf MyCallback, Nothing), it typically takes about 6 seconds. When debugging, it appears that the bulk of the time is spent waiting between the completion of the BeginMethodName call and the beginning of MyCallback. Does the thread switching really incur that much overhead? Is there another reason for this?

• C# InternalsVisibleTo() attribute for VBNET 2.0 while testing?

  I'm building an Active Directory wrapper in VBNET 2.0 (can't use later .NET) in which I have the following: IUtilisateur IGroupe IUniteOrganisation These interfaces are implemented in internal classes (Friend in VBNET), so that I want to implement a façade in order to instiate each of the interfaces with their internal classes. This will allow the architecture a better flexibility, etc. Now, I want to test these classes (Utilisateur, Groupe, UniteOrganisation) in a different project within the same solution. However, these classes are internal. I would like to be able to instantiate them without going through my façade, but only for these tests, nothing more. Here's a piece of code to illustrate it: public static class DirectoryFacade { public static IGroupe CreerGroupe() { return new Groupe(); } } // Then in code, I would write something alike: public partial class MainForm : Form { public MainForm() { IGroupe g = DirectoryFacade.CreerGroupe(); // Doing stuff with instance here... } } // My sample interface: public interface IGroupe { string Domaine { get; set; } IList<IUtilisateur> Membres { get; } } internal class Groupe : IGroupe { private IList<IUtilisateur> _membres; internal Groupe() { _membres = new List<IUtilisateur>(); } public string Domaine { get; set; } public IList<IUtilisateur> Membres { get { return _membres; } } } I heard of InternalsVisibleTo() attribute, recently. I was wondering whether it is available in VBNET 2.0/VS2005 so that I could access the assmebly's internal classes for my tests? Otherwise, how could I achieve this?
