• Finding the time to program in your spare time?

  I've got about a dozen programming projects bouncing about my head, and I'd love to contribute to some open source projects, the problem I have is that having spent the entire day staring at Visual Studio and or Eclipse (Sometimes both at the same time...) the last thing I feel like doing when I go home is program. How do you build up the motivation/time to work on your own projects after work? I'm not saying that I don't enjoy programming, it's just that I enjoy other things to and it can be hard to even do something you enjoy if you've spent all day already doing it. I think that if I worked at a chocolate factory the last thing I'd want to see when I got home was a Wonka bar.

• Using heavyweight ORM implementation for light based games

  I'm just about to engulf myself in an MVC-based/Component architecture in C#, using MySQL's connector/Net for the data storage, and probably some NHibernate/FluentNHibernate Object-relational-mapping to map out the data structure. The goal is to build a scalable 2D RPG. Then I think about it...and I can't help but think this seems a little "heavy weight" for a 2D RPG, especially one which, while I plan to incorporate a lot of functionality and entertaining gameplay, may be ported to something like Windows Phone or Android in the future. Yet, on the other hand even a 2-Dimensional RPG can become very complicated, and therefore must incorporate a lot of functionality. While this can be accomplished with text/XML/JSON for data storage, is there a better way? Is something such as Object-Relational-Mapping useful in such an application? So, what do you think? Would you say that there is a place for such technologies? I don't know what to think...

The Functional Requirements are currently being worked out and documented with our business stakeholders by our Enterprise Design department. I'm required to produce Technical Design Documents and manage the team to actually build the solution. I'm wanting to try Evidence Based Scheduling, but as I understand, part of that is breaking the job down into small tasks that are less than 14 hours in duration, which requires me to have already done the Technical Design. Therefore, can Evidence Based Scheduling only be used after the Technical Design has been done? How do you then plan and estimate the time it may take to come up with the Technical Design?

• How can I make a permanently updated copy of a file in a different place to the original file?

  I use two computers, a Linux one for coding and building and a Windows one which has the programming application to load the built program onto the hardware. Both computers have access to a network drive which I use to pass the files from Linux to Windows. My problem is, that every time I build I have to copy the files from where the are created to the network drive. How can I make some sort of file in the network drive on Ubuntu that always mirrors the file which is built in the different location, like a pointer? Thanks!

• Errors compiling XNA project Windows 8?

  I'm using Visual Studio 2012 have just installed Windows 8 on my computer and tried to compile a game Im working on in XNA. When the game tried to build, I got the following errors: Error 12 Could not copy the file "C:\Users\Computer\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\bin\x86\Debug\Content\SkyDome\skycirrus01.xnb" because it was not found. Error 13 Could not copy the file "C:\Users\Computer\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\bin\x86\Debug\Content\Fonts\Arial.xnb" because it was not found. Error 14 Could not copy the file "C:\Users\Computer\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\WindowsGame1\bin\x86\Debug\Content\Fonts\ISOCP2.xnb" because it was not found. skycirrus01.xnb is actually a .fbx. *Arial.xmb* and ISOCP2.xmb are my spritefonts within my project. Prior to installing Windows 8 (store bought) my project compiled. Does anyone know how to convert these to .xnb files? I'm assuming that will make them compatible.

• Poor mobile performance when running from Eclipse

  So after weeks of thinking my rendering code was bad, I accidentally discovered the following: Running my game on a Nexus S From Eclipse (Debug as - Android application): 12fps From the device while still attached to USB (getting log info in Eclipse still): 24fps From the device while not attached via USB: 56fps I was wondering if anyone else has issues like this? I mean, the problem really isn't a problem since the final release build will likely have good performance, but for the time being I don't want to have to keep (un)plugging my device in and out when testing code all day long. Is there some remedy for this or does anyone have any input/advice? Thanks.

• Building small Ubuntu server - What hardware is recommended?

  There are many of us who need to build small Ubuntu server. Problem is that in some countries it is hard to find and quite expensive to buy server motherboards and processors. And when one is building small server with limited budget, buying some Xenons is not really an option. So, are there any general recommendations for hardware (I think that motherboards are the main issue) that is stable and fast under Linux? I read that Intel should be the best choice for cpu + mbo combo. So, I was looking around for some Intel motherboards + i7 Ivy Bridge (like Intel DZ77BH-55K with Z77 chipset and Intel i7 3770K) but I've read that they have some issues with kernel, booting and USB ports. That is why I ask community if you have any experience with this. Maybe Intel is not the best choice here? Maybe ASUS or Gigabyte or _other company_ are more stable with Linux? I hope that this Q&As can help people in building stable Ubuntu server.

  I am looking for a specific news portal CMS. I know all the major "general" CMS (like WordPress, Drupal or Joomla) and even the less known ones (like TYPO3, Expression Engine, Text Pattern or Concrete5). I'm already working with a Drupal distribution called OpenPublish and another WordPress installation to determine which would be better, but these are more of a Plan B. I would like to work directly with a CMS that was build exactly for this kind of tasks specific to a news / media portal. It doesn't matter if the CMS is commercial (however, I don't want to pay a monthly fee) or free, but I need to be able to use it on my own server / hosting and I need to be able to access it's source code (not to modify it, but to integrate it with future plugins / modules). If you know any CMS that qualifies for this job, please let me know. In the last few days I was all over Google but I couldn't anything worth mentioning.

  Hi I am designing a puzzle game for the iphone and was wondering as most puzzle games consist of the player progressing through multiple levels. You see for example Angry Birds has over 100 levels. Once the basis of the game is made, how do developers typically go about building their levels? Do they generally build them from scratch each one more or less, or work of their own template or have some other method which they use to tailor these levels? Stop operations due to payment delay. In one of my recent application I have implemented this feature to first check the database operations for locked status. If any of the above condition fulfils, database operations like insert and update are not carried out. I now need this feature in all the old applications and the future applications I build. I want to know whether WCF is suitable in this scenario as I want to share methods or an independent locking application among various other applications.   I have not had a significant side project for a while but I have been working on a product idea. Its an analytics application that analyses twitter data and reports on market sentiment. The target market is companies who want to track trends in consumer sentiment. My idea is to teach the application to divide relevant tweets into ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ categories. If the input was the set of tweets featuring the word ‘telstra’ the application would find the following tweet:   and put it in the ‘negative’ category. Collecting data in this fashion facilitates the creation of graphs such as: which can then be correlated against events, such as a share offer or new product release. I may go ahead and build this, just because I am a programmer and it amuses me to do so. My concerns are: There  is no market for this tool There is a market, but I don’t understand it and have no way to reach it.

• How to change Ubuntu Studio from XFCE to Gnome?

  I have 12.04 Ubuntu Studio Installed at the moment. On removing a application called Terminal Emulator, I accidentally removed xfce too. As I am not very fond of xfce, I am OK with it as I can change the session to gnome 3 upon login. But session runs with occasional glitches. My question is how to remove xfce completely and turn it into pure gnome system. I am aware of the way to do apt-get install ubuntu-desktop But, this is going to change the ubuntu studio, I dont want that. I just want to change my ubuntu studio to pure gnome without uninstalling ubuntu-desktop. i.e. Something like ubuntustudio-12.04-gnome build. I've looked at this Q&A: How to remove xubuntu?
