• Data persistance with BufferedReader and PrintWriter?

  I have this simple application with a couple of classes which are all related. There's one, the main one, for which there is only one instance of. I need to save save and load that using a text stream. My instructor requirement is BufferedReader to load the stream and PrintWriter to save it. But is this even possible? To persist a data object/class with a text stream? I know how to do it with and object, using serialization. But I don't see how am I supposed to do it using text streams. Suggestions?

  Is there any method that is called or event that is dispatched right before an Element is cleaned up by the JavaScript garbage collector? In Perl I would write: package MyObj; sub new {bless {}} sub DESTROY {print "cleaning up @_\n"} and then later: { my $obj = MyObj->new; # do something with obj } # scope ends, and assuming there are no external references to $obj, # the DESTROY method will be called before the object's memory is freed My target platform is Firefox (and I have no need to support other browsers), so if there is only a Firefox specific way of doing this, that is fine. And a little background: I am writing the Perl module XUL::Gui which serves as a bridge between Perl and Firefox, and I am currently working on plugging a few memory leaks related to DOM Elements sticking around forever, even after they are gone and no more references remain on the Perl side. So I am looking for ways to either figure out when JavaScript Elements will be destroyed, or a way to force JavaScript to cleanup an object.

• Can I have fixed typed ArrayList in C#, just like C++?

  I have an ArrayList which contains fixed type of objects. However everytime I need to extract an object a particular index, I need to typecast it to my user defined type from object type. Is there a way in C# to declare ArrayList of fixed types just like Java and C++, or is there a work around to avoid the typecasting everytime? Edit: I apologize I forgot mentioning that I require the datastructure to be thread-safe, which List is not. Otherwise I would have just used a normal Array. But I want to save myself from the effort of explicitly locking and unlocking while writing the array. So I thought of using ArrayList, synchronize it, but it requires typecasting every time.

• fast on-demand c++ compilation [closed]

  I'm looking at the possibility of building a system where when a query hits the server, we turn the query into c++ code, compile it as shared object and the run the code. The time for compilation itself needs to be small for it to be worthwhile. My code can generate the corresponding c++ code but if I have to write it out on disk and then invoke gcc to get a .so file and then run it, it does not seem to be worth it. Are there ways in which I can get a small snippet of code to compile and be ready as a share object fast (can have a significant start up time before the queries arrive). If such a tool has a permissive license thats a further plus. Edit: I have a very restrictive query language that the users can use so the security threat is not relevant. My own code translates the query into c++ code. The answer mentioning clang is perfect.

I am now trying to create a JSP page that will allow a client to enter a new User object into the System. I am unsure of how the JSP page interacts with the User facade, the tutorials are confusing me a little.   I've written program solving bounded producer & consumer problem. While constructing ArrayBlockingQueue I defined capacity 100. I'm using methods take and put inside threads. And I've noticed that sometimes I see put 102 times with any take's between them. Why does it happen? • C# NetworkAvailibilityChanged doesn't trigger on disconnect

  My goal is to detect when the Ethernet cable gets disconnected I am attempting to use NetworkChange class but the event NetworkAvailibilityChanged does not trigger when I unplug Ethernet cable. • Rails -- Cant set value for date_select in form

  I'm pulling data from an API where the date data comes in as "2008-02-11 00:00:00 " I would like that data to go into my form within the date_select as a value so I can view it correctly before I add it into my database. The view looks like <%= f.label :start_date %><br /> <%= f.date_select :start_date, :value => " #{@stdate[idx]} " %> The object is actually an array of dates since I'm doing this action several times do thats why the [idx] is there; serving as an index. <%= @stdate[idx] % ends up outputting "2008-02-11 00:00:00 " but the fields for the date_select helper only outputs the current date "2010" "June" "5" in those dropdown date selects fields... Do I need to set the values of the Year, Month, and Date Individually? I have Chronic and tried to parse the object before using it as a value for the date_select and that didnt work either. Any ideas?

  I was just experimenting around with one of my programs, trying to make it looks prettier and I found something interesting. I have an interface that 4 classes inherit from. I found that if I pass the Class as an object to a method like so: ClassTest classtest = new ClassTest(); DoOperation(classtest); private void DoOperation(object o) { ((InterfaceClass)o).DoThis(); } So I can pass any type of class that inherits from InterfaceClass, and it will preform the proper interface operation? This is the coolest thing I've ever found from OOP (something I've never really studied) I really thought interfaces were created for the sole purpose of organization for developers. Are there more uses for interfaces than this?

  I've got a MainPage.xaml page a Detail.xaml page. I've passed variables to the Detail.xaml from MainPage.xaml by using a static variable and referencing it in Detail.xaml (the detail page is acting like a dialog). However once I've updated the content of another object, I want to call a method in MainPage.xaml to refresh the content of that page using the updated object from the Detail.xaml page. I assume I am not using the correct paradigm for this and should probably be using MVVM or something but I'm not familiar with the implementation and was hoping there was a simple way to do this?

  Hi All, I am loving the new world that is C#, I've come to a point with my toy programs where I want to start writing some unit tests. My code currently uses a database via a DatabaseDataContext object (*.dbml file), what's the best way to create a mock for this object? Given how easy it is to generate the database LINQ - SQL code and how common a request this must be I'm hoping that VS2010 has built in functionality to help with testing.   I'm building a WPF MVVM-ish application. I want to be able to display an event log containing items in a collection that exists in my viewmodel. I want any of the objects in the model to be able to add data to the event log. Therefore every object needs to be able to pass data back to one central collection for databinding in the view. I could implement an event in every one of my data classes and manually pass the events up the object heirarchy but this seems super clumsy. On the visual tree a Routed Event would take care of this, is there some equivelent in the model scope? Any other ideas?

  I don't know exactly how to define my doubt so please be patient if the question has already been asked. Let's say I have to dinamically instantiate an object. This object will surely be instance of a subclass of a known, immutable class A. I can obtain dinamically the specific implementation class. Would it be better to use reflection exactly as if I didn't know anything about the target class, or would it be preferrable/possible to do something like: A obj = (Class.forName("com.package.Sub-A")) new A(); where Sub-A extends A ? The purpose would be to avoid reflection overhead times... Thank you in advance.

  I want to use Coffeescript to create an UIObject class. This class should inherit from jQuery, so that instances of UIObject can be used as if they where created with jQuery. class UIObject isObject: (val) -> typeof val is "object" constructor: (tag, attributes) -> @merge jQuery(tag, attributes), this @UIObjectProperties = {} merge: (source, destination) -> for key of source if destination[key] is undefined destination[key] = source[key] else if @isObject(source[key]) @merge(source[key], destination[key]) return It partially works. Consider the Foobar class below: class Foobar extends UIObject constructor: -> super("<h1/>", html: "Foobar") $("body").append(new Foobar) works fine. BUT: (new Foobar).appendTo("body") places the tag, but also raises RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded. Was it just a bad idea to inherit from jQuery? Or is there a solurion?
