  I have two models Ticket and TicketComment, the TicketComment is a child of Ticket. ticket.rb class Ticket < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :ticket_comments, :dependent => :destroy, :order => 'created_at DESC' # allow the ticket comments to be created from within a ticket form accepts_nested_attributes_for :ticket_comments, :reject_if => proc { |attributes| attributes['comment'].blank? } end ticket_comment.rb class TicketComment < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :ticket validates_presence_of :comment end What I want to do is mimic the functionality in Trac, where if a user makes a change to the ticket, and/or adds a comment, an email is sent to the people assigned to the ticket. I want to use an after_update or after_save callback, so that I know the information was all saved before I send out emails. How can I detect changes to the model (ticket.changes) as well as whether a new comment was created or not (ticket.comments) and send this update (x changes to y, user added comment 'text') in ONE email in a callback method?

• Unhandled exceptions in BackgroundWorker

  My WinForms app uses a number of BackgroundWorker objects to retrieve information from a database. I'm using BackgroundWorker because it allows the UI to remain unblocked during long-running database queries and it simplifies the threading model for me. I'm getting occasional DatabaseExceptions in some of these background threads, and I have witnessed at least one of these exceptions in a worker thread while debugging. I'm fairly confident these exceptions are timeouts which I suppose its reasonable to expect from time to time. My question is about what happens when an unhandled exception occurs in one of these background worker threads. I don't think I can catch an exception in another thread, but can I expect my WorkerCompleted method to be executed? Is there any property or method of the BackgroundWorker I can interrogate for exceptions?

• Storing a list of objects in GAE

  I need to store some data that looks a little like this: xyz 123 abc 456 hij 678 rer 838 Now I would just store it as a traditional string and integer model, and put in the datastore. But the data changes regularly, and is ONLY relevant when looked at as a COLLECTION. So it needs to be store as either a list of lists, or a list of objects, both of which can't really be done without pickling as far as I know. Can anyone help? Even storing it as a text file may work :S

• Inline Form Validation in Django

  Newbie request that seems difficult to implement. I would like to make an entire inline formset within an admin change form compulsory.. so in my current scenario when I hit save on an Invoice form (in Admin) the inline Order form is blank. I'd like to stop people creating invoices with no orders associated. Anyone know an easy way to do that? Normal validation like (required=True) on the model field doesn't appear to work in this instance. Thanks!!

  I'm using nhibernate validator in my current solution. Everythings is almost fine but... My view model has a property of type Gender (see example below) public virtual Gender Gender { get; set; } public enum Gender { Female = 1, Male = 2 } Now i like to have some validation to ensure that the gender property ist set. But neither the NotEmpty nor the NotNull Attribute fulfil the requirement. Is there a kind of a generic solution or best practice to handle enum validations. Thanks in advance.

What domain model implementation should I use in my case ? I would like to keep the dynamic finders usability in my project.

I am trying to design a tagging system with a model like this: Tag: content = CharField creator = ForeignKey used = IntergerField It is a many-to-many relationship between tags and what's been tagged. Everytime I insert a record into the assotication table, Tag.used is incremented by one, and decremented by one in case of deletion. Tag.used is maintained because I want to speed up answering the question 'How many times this tag is used?'. However, this seems to slow insertion down obviously. Please tell me how to improve this design. Thanks in advance.

• Entity Framework doesn't like 0..1 to * relationships.

  I have a database framework where I have two tables. The first table has a single column that is an identity and primary key. The second table contains two columns. One is a nvarchar primary key and the other is a nullable foreign key to the first table. On the default import of the database I get the following error: Condition cannot be specified for Column member 'ForeignKeyId' because it is marked with a 'Computed' or 'Identity' StoreGeneratedPattern. where ForeignKeyId is the second foreign key reference in the second table. Is this just something the entity model doesn't do? Or am I missing something?

• Modify action names for route collections in Symfony?

  When creating an sfPropelRouteCollection, how can I edit the action names that the collection will generate? For example: # Routing for "product" CRUD product: class: sfPropelRouteCollection options: model: Product module: product actions: [new, create, edit, update, delete] How can I change the actual action that is called for any of the new/create/edit/update/delete methods? I'd like for them to call "ajaxNew," "ajaxCreate," etc. so the URL would look something like "product/ajaxNew", or the action for "update" would be "ajaxUpdate".   I have an actionlink that on click im passing a List of objects to a controller action. Example: View: Html.ActionLink("TestLink", "TestMethod", "Test", Model.SampleList, null) TestController: public ActionResult TestMethod(List sampleList) { return View(sampleList); } When I do this I get a null sampleList. I can pass a single complex object fine just not a collection of it. Do I need the correct routing for this? The reason I'm doing this is instead of passing an id and do a look up in the controller action, I just pass in the data.

• Slider Not Behaving As I Would Expect

  I have a slider that changes a float from 1 to 10 but I want to save this value and use it across all view controllers so I have saved that float as an NSNumber in a model class (settingsData.sensitivitySliderSettingValue). I am trying to output the updated slider value to the console every time that it is changed however it just gets set to 0 rather than 0 to 10. I don't understand why this is... • Linq to Sql, Repositories, and Asp.Net MVC ViewData: How to remove redundancy?

  Linq to SQL creates objects which are IQueryable and full of relations. Html Helpers require specific interface objects like IEnumerable<SelectListItem>. What I think could happen: Reuse the objects from Linq to SQL without all the baggage, i.e., return Pocos from the Linq to SQL objects without additional Domain Model classes? Extract objects that easily convert to (or are) Html helper objects like the SelectListItem enumeration? Is there any way to do this without breaking separation of concerns? Some neat oop trick to bridge the needs? For example, if this were within a repository, the SelectListItem wouldn't be there. The select new is a nice way to cut out an object from the Linq to SQL without the baggage but it's still referencing a class that shouldn't be referenced: IEnumerable<SelectListItem> result = (from record in db.table select new SelectListItem { Selected = record.selected, Text= record.Text, Value= record.Value } ).AsEnumerable();

• How to get an ASP.NET MVC Ajax response to redirect to new page instead of inserting view into Updat

  I am using the Ajax.BeginForm to create a form the will do an ajax postback to a certain controller action and then if the action is successful, the user should get redirected to another page (if the action fails then a status message gets displayed using the AjaxOptions UpdateTargetId). using (Ajax.BeginForm("Delete", null, new { userId = Model.UserId }, new AjaxOptions { UpdateTargetId = "UserForm", LoadingElementId = "DeletingDiv" }, new { name = "DeleteForm", id = "DeleteForm" })) { [HTML DELETE BUTTON] } If the delete is successful I am returning a Redirect result: [Authorize] public ActionResult Delete(Int32 UserId) { UserRepository.DeleteUser(UserId); return Redirect(Url.Action("Index", "Home")); } But the Home Controller Index view is getting loaded into the UpdateTargetId and therefore I end up with a page within a page. Two things I am thinking about: Either I am architecting this wrong and should handle this type of action differently (not using ajax). Instead of returning a Redirect result, return a view which has javascript in it that does the redirect on the client side. Does anyone have comments on #1? Or if #2 is a good solution, what would the "redirect javascript view" look like?

Alternatively (in view) i could iterate while displaying the content, so i ends up only accessing the database 2 times instead of 3 times. Any win win solution / best practice to this kind of problem ?

• Hybrid gmail MX + postfix for local accounts

  Here's the setup: We have a domain, mydomain.com. Everything is on our own server, except general email accounts which are through gmail. Currently gmail is set as the MX record. The server also has various email aliases it needs to support for bug trackers and such. e.g. [email protected] |/path/to/issuetracker.script I'm struggling with a setup that allows the following, both locally and from user's email clients. guser1 - has a gmail account and a local account guser2 - only has a gmail account bugs - has a pipe alias in /etc/aliases for issue tracker Scenarios mail to [email protected] from local host (crons and such) needs to go to gmail account mail to [email protected] from local host mail to [email protected] needs to be piped to the local issue tracker script So, the first stab was creating a transport map. In this scenario, the our server would be set as teh MX and guser* destined emails are sent to gmail. Put the gmail users in a map like so: [email protected] smtp:gmailsmtp:25 [email protected] smtp:gmailsmtp:25 Problems: Ignores extensions such as [email protected] Only works if append_at_myorigin = no (if set to yes, gmail refuses to connect with: E4C7E3E09BA3: to=, relay=none, delay=0.05, delays=0.02/0.01/0.02/0, dsn=4.4.1, status=deferred (connect to gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com[209.85.222.57]:25: Connection refused)) since append_at_myorigin is set to no, all received emails have (unknown sender) The second stab was to set explicit localhost aliases in /etc/aliases and do a domain wide forward on mydomain. This too requires setting the local server as the MX: root: root@localhost # transport mydomain.com smtp:gmailsmtp:25 Problems: * If I create a transport map for a domain that matches "$myhostname", the aliases file is never parsed. So when a local user (or daemon) sends an email like: mail -s "testing" root < text.txt Postfix ignores the /etc/alias entry and maps to [email protected] and attempts to send it to the gmail transport mapping. Third stab: Create a subdomain for the bugs, something like bugs.mydomain.com. Set the MX for this domain to local server and leave the MX for mydomain.com to the Gmail server. Problems: * Does not solve the issue with local accounts. • Ways to call Blocks within Magento: createBlock vs Layout xml file

  Context: I'm trying to include Adminhtml blocks in the frontend of the site to replace some of the user account blocks. The first thing I'm trying to do is simply display the block on the correct page. I can replace the entire page by setting the Body of the response inside the controller, but I'm having a hard time including the block in the layout xml file and then calling it within the template. Why would I be able to create an adminhtml/sales_order_grid from Mage_Sales_OrderController using createBlock: $this->getResponse()->setBody($this->getLayout()->createBlock('adminhtml/sales_order_grid')->toHtml()); But not from a frontend layout, using a declaration <block type="adminhtml/sales_order_grid" name="orders_widget"/> within app/design/frontend/default/default/layout/sales.xml The latter produces an error without a stack trace: Fatal error: Call to a member function toHtml() on a non-object in app/code/core/Mage/Core/Model/Layout.php on line 526 Thanks for any guidance!

• Create link on page w/ web address stored in database

  This seems like it should be easy, but I can't seem to figure it out. All of my google searches lead me to linking to databases which isn't what I want to do. I'm a complete web development newb. I've roughly followed the NerdDinner tutorial in creating my web app. One of my stored fields is a web address. On the Index and Details pages, when I display the info from my record, I want the web address to be a clickable link to the website. It's currently displayed as: <%= Html.Encode(Model.Subcontract.company1.website) %>

• Localization with separate Language folders within Views

  I'm trying to have specific folders for each language in Views. (I know this isn't the best way of doing it but it has to be this way for now) e.g. /Views/EN/User/Edit.aspx /Views/US/User/Edit.aspx These would both use the same controller and model but have different Views for each language. In my Global.asax.cs I have routes.MapRoute( "Default", // Route name "{language}/{controller}/{action}/{id}", // URL with parameters new { language = "en", controller = "Logon", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional }, // Parameter defaults new { language = @"en|us" } // validation ); This works ok but always points to the same View. If I put the path to the Lanagugage folder it works return View("~/Views/EN/User/Edit.aspx"); but clearly this isn't a very nice way to do it. Is there anyway to get MVC to look in the correct language folder? Thanks and again I know this isn't the best way of doing Localization but I can't use resource files.

Now we have got a new requirement that, whenever a particular rows get updated by our application, some business logic has to happen. I have been looking into Triggers in SQL server and it looks like we can do it using triggers. I am also looking at Entity Framework's OnPropertyChange capability. Is it possible to do it with "OnPropertyChange"? I mean, Can I create a model and implement "OnPropertyChange" method? And when our application modifies the rows using ADO.Net, then will it fire "OnPropertyChange" event so that my custome code in "OnPropertyChange" excutes? • Best way to manage connection strings in a project containing both Classic ASP and ASP.Net 1.1 code?

  I have a project that I have inherited that is primarily a Classic ASP application; however, intermixed in the the application are a handful of ASP.net pages. Some of the ASP.net pages are 1.1 and do not use a code behind model. The classic ASP pages have a number of /include directories where there's a file for database connections. The ASP.Net pages have the connection string hard coded in in their code. I'm trying to clean up this mess of connection strings so it's easier to manage across development environments. Does anyone have any recommendations on how I may be able to effectively do this that will work for both Classic ASP and ASP.Net pages? Thanks

  All QuickStarts and RI examples in the CAG documentation are good but I lack the more Enterprise scale examples. Let's say we have 40+ modules, each containing a Proxy,Facade,PresentationModel,Model and Views. Each module also makes calls to a Module-specific WCF service which is to be hosted in IIS or in a stand-alone console host. Our approach have been to include the UI-module, service-module and related tests into one solution so they can be developed and tested separately from other modules. My problem is how the hosting of the services should be done when the services are in separate modules and how to actually run the separate module together with the rest of the application-modules when I press F5. Is there a best practise for this? I guess it has been done before?

  Hello world. My team is starting a brand new ASP.NET solution which will probably become large. Inspired by ASP.NET MVC, we currently express all data access objects in a model project. We, however, do not have good conventions for organizing ASP.NET ascx's and aspx's. We have already reviewed DotNetNuke and want to avoid the complexity of driving the whole application through a single default.aspx . What is the best way to organize a non-MVC ASP.NET solution? Your tips, links, and advice are greatly appreciated!
