  • Installed Ubuntu on a macbook pro and am running into errors with internet

    I recently installed Ubuntu (64 bit, 12.04) on a mid-2012 Macbook Pro, and I've been having some really annoying issues. Chief among them is that my wireless doesnt seem to function properly. I've installed Ubuntu on this mac before, and again this time the drivers for the wireless card were missing. I, using something along the lines of sudo su apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer A new problem I've been experiencing however is that none of the networks available in my home show up. I've been able to connect theto themm by going into "Connect to hidden networks" and typing in the network name and password, but when I restart the computer my network (let's just name it "Network1"), doesnt show up. I tried going into "Edit Connections" and it shows up in the wireless tab, but it is never connected to automatically or shows up in the drop-down menu. Any help?

    I'm using ASP.NET MVC 4 and I want to track the incoming traffic of my site to know things like: 1) How many users that clicked a Google Adwords advertisement have bought one particular product? 2) Ranking of buyers grouped by Google Adwords advertisements. I could add a parameter to the URL like mysite.com?source=advertisement1234 but I want to avoid this practice to have cleaner URLs and for SEO purposes. Url.Referrer is not going to give me that information either, it's just going to say that the referrer is Google. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

    I learned PHP to make websites. After some years I've started using programming for solving what is difficult tasks for my level. Now I want to make a program that solves equations. (I want to write it myself, not use an API. Because I'm doing this for the sake of the challenge, not for the result..) Because of this, I'm going to learn a new and faster/better language. It's going to be C++, Java, Python or C#. What are the benefits of each language, and which language is best for speed compared to speed of writing and readability? Using C would be lightning fast, but the lack of OO is making for more complex code and reduces the readability, for example..

  • Huge 2d pixelized world

    I would like to make a game field in a indie-strategic 2d game to be some a-like this popular picture. http://0.static.wix.com/media/6a83ae_cd307e45ffd9c6b145237263ac1a86be.jpg_1024 So every "pixel"(blocks) changes it's color slowly, sometimes a bright color wave happens, etc, but the spaces beetwen this pixels should stay dark (not to count shades, lightning and other 3rd party stuff going on). Units are going to be same "pixelized" and should position them-selfs according those blocks. I have some experience in game-developing, but this task seems not trivial for me. What approaches (shader, tons of sprites or code-render, i don't now) would you recommend me to follow? (I'm thinking of making this game using Unity Engine) Thanks everyone! :)

  • Understanding how to go from a scene to what's actually rendered to screen in OpenGL?

    I want something that explains step by step how, after setting up a simple scene I can go from that 'world' space, to what's finally rendered on my screen (ie, actually implement something). I need the resource to clearly show how to derive and set up both orthographic and perspective projection matrices... basically I want to thoroughly understand what's going on behind the scenes and not plug in random things without knowing what they do. I've found lots of half explanations, presentation slides, walls of text, etc that aren't really doing much for me. I have a basic understanding of linear algebra/matrix transforms, and a rough idea of what's going on when you go from model space - screen, but not enough to actually implement it in code.

  • What methodology to use for planning/developing a Language conversion project?

    I am trying to help my friend by creating a part of his on-going project. What I'm going to do is create a Java parser to break up the Java code into operators, parameters etc to build XML representation. Next I want to create a code generator to convert the parsed java code to XML conforming to the schema I've created. Finally I want to use an XML style-sheet to transform the XML into another programming language type. Basically I just wanted some advice on which methodology/model I should use for planning and developing this project. Is there some benefit to using Agile etc for instance?

    I installed the Faience theme (sudo apt-get install Faience) and it installed fine. Then I tried installing another package and it said this... Reading package lists...     It’s finally here: the Kindle app for Windows Phone 7! Finally we can have our books on the go as well! It’s not sitting atop the “new” list on the WP7 marketplace though. I had to go to the Books section of the marketplace, and there its set to the top spot of free apps. I’m going to read the next chapter in my current book on it to see what the experience is like. After playing quickly with it, here’s some observations: - You flip pages going left to right, not up and down. No setting to change this if you don’t like it. - Good options for changing font size, background colour, and setting bookmarks. - *No* option for highlighting though. However, previous highlights do show up and you can review notes made in other programs Still, for a free Kindle reader and the ability to catch up on books wherever on the phone, so far so good!

  • What should I do with my programming project?

    I've been working on a top secret project that has potential of becoming very popular. No one has done anything like it. The problem is I have no motivation to finish it, and its about 70% done. I also don't have the ability to sell & market the product. The documentation is a pain to write. I just want to finish the project , receive my reward and move on to other things. I know that if I were to release it as a product I'm going to have to do support, and do bug fixes. No thank you! I've thought of making it open source but I'm failing to see the benefits. My hard work is just going to be up for grabs isn't it? How can I abandon my project whilst getting rewarded for the work I've done so far?

  • How much does college (e.g. a compsci major) factor into a programmer's resume? [closed]

    I was having an argument with a friend who claims that given roughly equal skill, someone with a college degree from a name school is going to start at a significantly better job (e.g. a higher-end company) for his first job; and because of this, he's also going to be significantly ahead for his second job. Here are my two questions: given equal skill, how much does college factor into a programmer's overall career? if someone has the technical skills to work competently as as programmer, is it worth it for him to go to college first? if the degree is significant, is it significant whether the degree is from an average college or a higher-tier college (e.g. Stanford, MIT)?

I finished that pending windows update. but no help. I googed to find that should re-install .net framework 1.1/2.1, i tried but nothing good happend, this error always here. I even spent 4 hrs to re-install vs2010, but still cannot solve this. If i need to re-install WIN7 for this , i will be crazy at all... How this happened? and how to overcome it? I want to use jQuery so that when I click the H3, the image, or the paragraph inside the LIE(which are all information about a certain site), it would fade out the entire UL, then grab info about that site from our database. I think this requires AJAX but I don't have much experience with it. I'm also confused on how to use jQuery to write the new HTML after the information is grabbed.

  • Cassandra random read speed

    We're still evaluating Cassandra for our data store. As a very simple test, I inserted a value for 4 columns into the Keyspace1/Standard1 column family on my local machine amounting to about 100 bytes of data. Then I read it back as fast as I could by row key. I can read it back at 160,000/second. Great. Then I put in a million similar records all with keys in the form of X.Y where X in (1..10) and Y in (1..100,000) and I queried for a random record. Performance fell to 26,000 queries per second. This is still well above the number of queries we need to support (about 1,500/sec) Finally I put ten million records in from 1.1 up through 10.1000000 and randomly queried for one of the 10 million records. Performance is abysmal at 60 queries per second and my disk is thrashing around like crazy. I also verified that if I ask for a subset of the data, say the 1,000 records between 3,000,000 and 3,001,000, it returns slowly at first and then as they cache, it speeds right up to 20,000 queries per second and my disk stops going crazy. I've read all over that people are storing billions of records in Cassandra and fetching them at 5-6k per second, but I can't get anywhere near that with only 10mil records. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Is there some setting I need to change from the defaults? I'm on an overclocked Core i7 box with 6gigs of ram so I don't think it's the machine.   • Uploading Binary iPhone App "The signature was invalid" again again and again...

    Hello! I'm going crazy! I'm trying to upload the binary of my first application but I have always the same error! "The binary you uploaded was invalid. The signature was invalid, or it was not signed with an Apple submission certificate." I did everything, EVERYTHING!! I created the request for the certificate, used it for both developer and distribution certificate, created the provisioning profile (12 times!!!) always cleaning my keychain and my Xcode deleting the old certificates and profiles.. I reboot the machine, reboot Xcode, the log is correct, but... I can't upload my app!!!! Checked if my iPhone is connected (i tried with iPhone disconneted too). I checked the certificate in both my project settings "Distribuition" Configuration (duplicate of "Release" configuration) and in my target settings. Reveal in finder, compress the app and sent the zip... I tried with Application Loader and iTunes connect online.. but nothing! NOTHING!! I've spent 8 hours! And again i can't have my app uploaded!!! I'm really going crazy! Can anyone help me pleeease? Thx!

    Hi. i have a little problem, and I am not sure if it's a compiler bug, or stupidity on my side. Sorry about the big code, some small example could have illustrated too. but often you guys ask for the real code, so well - here it is :D

    Having problems with regular expressions in JavaScript. I've got a number of strings that need delimiting by commas. Unfortunately the sub strings don't have quotes around them which would make life easier. var str1 = "Three Blind Mice 13 Agents of Cheese Super 18" var str2 = "An Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe 7 Pixies None 12" var str3 = "The Cow Jumped Over The Moon 21 Crazy Cow Tales Wonderful 9" They are in the form of PHRASE1 (Mixed type with spaces") INTEGER1 (1 or two digit) PHRASE2 (Mixed type with spaces") WORD1 (single word mixed type, no spaces) INTEGER2 (1 or two digit) so I should get: result1 = "Three Blind Mice, 13, Agents of Cheese, Super, 18" result2 = "An Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe, 7, Pixies, None, 12" result3 = "A Cow Jumped Over The Moon, 21, Crazy Cow Tales, Wonderful, 9" I've looked at txt2re.com, but can't quite get what I need and ended up delimiting by hand. But I'm sure it can be done, albeit someone with a bigger brain. There are lots of examples of regEx but I couldn't find any to deal with phrases; so I was wondering if anyone could help me out.   • Handling very large lists of objects without paging?

    Hi, I have a class which can contain many small elements in a list. Looks like: public class Farm { private ArrayList<Horse> mHorses; } just wondering what will happen if the mHorses array grew to something crazy like 15,000 elements. I'm assuming that trying to write and read this from the datastore would be crazy, because I'd get killed on the serialization process. It's important that I can get the entire array in one shot without paging, and each Horse element may only have two string properties in it, so they are pretty lightweight: public class Horse { private String mId; private String mName; } I don't need these horses indexed at all. Does it sound reasonable to just store the mHorse array as a raw Text field, and force my clients to do the deserialization? Something like: public class Farm { private Text mHorsesSerialized; } then whenever the client receives a Farm instance, it has to take the raw string of horses, and split it in order to reinstantiate the list, something like: // GWT client perhaps Farm farm = rpcCall.getMyFarm(); String horsesSerialized = farm.getHorses(); String[] horseBlocks = horsesSerialized.split(","); for (int i = 0; i < horseBlocks.length; i++) { // .. continue deserializing the individual objects ... } yeah... so hopefully it would be quick to read a Farm instance from the datastore, and the serialization penalty is paid by the client, Thanks
