  Is a server essentially a background process running an infinite loop listening on a port? For example: while(1){ command = read(127.0.0.1:xxxx); if(command){ execute(command); } } When I say server, I obviously am not referring to a physical server (computer).   I am working on program that calculate the GPAs for university students in C#. I have made a gridview that contains columns for each subject. Its mark as letter and number. After the user "student" insert his/her subject I want to let the user click a button that will get the mark and the number of the credit hours of each subject. Calculate the GPA for the student and put the result in a textbox. I am having trouble getting started. Any advice for a good place to start?

• SSRS 2008 Report.GetDefaultPageSettings returns incorrect information

  I have an application that retrieves a report from SSRS 2008 and prints it automatically. This works except it always prints the report in Letter/Portrait. This particular report is Letter/Landscape. I have tracked the problem down to when calling the Report.GetDefaultPageSettings() function for this report, it returns PaperSize.Height = 1100 and PaperSize.Width = 850. I even modified the report to a custom size of 11" x 8.4" and it still returns 850 for the width. I cannot get this to print correctly when it renders the image incorrectly based on these settings. The report prints correctly when accessed by a web browser. It is only when I am trying to automatically print it that the issue appears.

  I have 3 tables in my database. ab_contacts id first_name last_name addressbook_id ab_addressbooks name id co_comments id link_id comment I'd like to create a query that will let me select all the contacts and comments related to them in a given addressbook. To select all the people in a given addressbook, I can use: select count(*) from ab_contacts where addressbook_id = '50'; This returns 8152 people. However, when I run my query: select ab_contacts.first_name, ab_contacts.last_name, ab_contacts.email, ab_addressbooks.name, co_comments.comments from ab_contacts JOIN ab_addressbooks ON (ab_contacts.addressbook_id = ab_addressbooks.id) JOIN co_comments ON (ab_contacts.id = co_comments.link_id) WHERE ab_contacts.addressbook_id = '50';` the format works, but I only get 1045 results. I'm sure there is something I am missing, but I cannot figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Will a source-removal sort always return a maximal cycle?

  I wrote a source-removal algorithm to sort some dependencies between tables in our database, and it turns out we have a cycle. For simplicity, let's say we have tables A, B, C, and D. The edges are like this: (A, B) (B, A) (B, C) (C, D) (D, A) As you can see, there are two cycles here. One is between A and B and another is between all four of them. Will this type of sort always choke on the largest cycle? Or is that not necessarily the case?

Let's say I have a theoretical, base 10, floating point calculator with the following characteristics Only 3 digits for mantissa 1 digit for exponent Sign for mantissa and exponent How would this machine compute the following? 300 + \sum_{i=1}^{100} 0.2 The correct result is 320.   Hi, I'm working on an application that analizes music similarity. In order to do that I proccess audio data and store the results in txt files. For each audio file I create 2 files, 1 containing and 16 values (each value can be like this:2.7000023942731723) and the other file contains 16 rows, each row containing 16 values like the one previously shown. I'd like to store the contents of these 2 file in a table of my MySQL database. My table looks like: Name varchar(100) Author varchar (100) in order to add the content of those 2 file I think I need to use the BLOB data type: file1 blob file2 blob My question is how should I store this info in the data base? I'm working with Java where I have a double array containing the 16 values (for the file1) and a matrix containing the file2 info. Should I process the values as strings and add them to the columns in my database? Thanks

• Information stored in a cookie file

  Thanks for you help in advance. I am trying to figure out the structure of the cookie file, more specifically i want to be able to determine the expiry time. From the cookies i have created they all appear to be in a standard format. Name, Value, website,followed by 5 numbers and a star. See example below. name value www.website.co.uk/ 1536 3041141504 30135951 1632526096 30135949 * Obviously the expiry time is one of the numbers, the question is which one. From experiments I have determined that the first and fifth number don't seem to change. In a case where i generated three cookies at the same time with a 1000 second time difference i noticed that the fourth number appeared to increase by 2000 suggesting that this has a connection with the expiry time. Can anyone confirm if i am heading in the right direction? And does any one know how i convert this to a human time and date(preferably in php but any language would give me a starting point) thanks Jason

  Hi Kernel Gurus, I need to write a kernel module that simulate a "multicaster" Using the /proc file system. Basically it need to support the following scenarios: 1) allow one write access to the /proc file and many read accesses to the /proc file. 2) The module should have a buffer of the contents last successful write. Each write should be matched by a read from all reader. Consider scenario 2, a writer wrote something and there are two readers (A and B), A read the content of the buffer, and then A tried to read again, in this case it should go into a wait_queue and wait for the next message, it should not get the same buffer again. I need to keep a map of all the pid's that already read the current buffer, and in case they try to read again and the buffer was not changed, they should be blocked until there is a new buffer. I'm trying to figure it there is a way i can save that info without a map. I heard there are some redundant fields inside the I/O system the I can use to flag a process if it already read the current buffer. Can someone give me a tip where should i look for that field ? how can i save info on the current process without keeping a "map" of pid's and buffers ? Thanks!

  My question is very simple to expose: I have a few aplications that share data between then. I need a way to support that data sharing (cross several computers) and when one aplication changes data, others should be notified about that. My question is about what tecnologies could be usefull to me. The solution i realise at this moment is to have a database to share data and an external publish-subscribe system (like http://pubsub.codeplex.com/) to notify all applications when the data is changed. But i belive that could exist some helpfull solutions. Do you know any of then? Thanks.

This doesn't tell you anything as you posed an OR statement. if(cash || credit) With humans it's possible that they might respond "Both" to that question, or "Only {cash | credit}." Is there a way (or operator) to force the a statement to return the TRUE portions of a statement?   I am attempting to implement a custom locale service in an MVC 2 webpage. I have an interface IResourceDictionary that provides a couple of methods for accessing resources by culture. This is because I want to avoid the static classes of .Net resources. The problem is accessing the chosen IResourceDictionary from the views. I have contemplated using the ViewDataDictionary given, creating a base controller from which all my controllers inherits that adds my IResourceDictionary to the ViewData before each action executes. Then I could call my resource dictionary this way: (ViewData["Resources"] as IResourceDictionary).GetEntry(params); Admittedly, this is extremely verbose and ugly, especially in inline code as we are encouraged to use in MVC. Right now I am leaning towards static class access ResourceDictionary.GetEntry(params); because it is slightly more elegant. I also thought about adding it to my typed model for each page, which seems more robust than adding it to the ViewData.. What is the preferred way to access my ResourceDictionary from the views? All my views will be using this dictionary.
