• What happens if the first part of an if-structure is false?

  Hey guys, I was wondering what happens when a program processes an if-structure with multiple conditions. I have an idea, but i'm not sure about it. I'll give an example : List<string> myTestList = null; if (myTestList != null && myTestList.Count > 0) { //process } The list is null. When processing the if, will it go from left to right exiting the if as soon as one condition is false? I've tried it and seems to throw no errors, so i assume the above explains it, but i'm not sure. Thanks in advance.

• Does any language have a while-else flow structure?

  Consider this flow structure which I happen to use often: if ( hasPosts() ) { while ( hasPosts() ) { displayNextPost(); } } else { displayNoPostsContent(); } Are there any programming languages which have an optional else clause for while, which is to be run if the while loop is never entered? Thus, the code above would become: while ( hasPosts() ) { displayNextPost(); } else { displayNoPostsContent(); } I find it interesting that many languages have the do-while construct (run the while code once before checking the condition) yet I have never seen while-else addressed. There is precedent for running an N block of code based on what was run in N-1 block, such as the try-catch construct. I wasn't sure whether to post here or on programmers.SE. If this question is more appropriate there, then please move it. Thanks.

• Sharing the same file between different projects

  Hi Everyone, For version control we currently use Visual Source Safe and are thinking of migrating to another version control system (SVN, Mercurial, Git). Currently we use Visual Source Safe's "Shared" file feature quite heavily. This allows us to share code between design and runtimes of a single product, and between multiple products as well. For example: **Product One** - Design Login.cpp Login.h Helper.cpp Helper.h - Runtime Login.cpp Login.h Helper.cpp Helper.h **Product Two** - Design Login.cpp Login.h - Launcher Login.cpp Login.h - Runtime Login.cpp Login.h In this example Login.cpp and Login.h contain common code that all of our projects need, Helper.cpp and Helper.h is only used in Product One. In Visual Source Safe they are shared between the specific projects, which means that whenever the files are updated in one project they are updated in any project they are shared with. This is a simple example but hopefully it explains why we use the shared feature: to reduce the amount of duplicated code and ensure that when a bug is fixed all projects automatically have access to the new fixed code. After researching alternatives to Visual Source Safe it seems that most version control systems do not have the idea of shared files, instead they seem to use the idea of sub repositories. Should we restructure our projects so that two copies of the files do not exist and an include directory is used instead? e.g. Product One Design Login.cpp Login.h Runtime Login.cpp Login.h Common Helper.cpp Helper.h This still leaves what to do with Login.cpp and Logon.h Should the shared files be moved to their own repository and then compiled into a lib or dll? This would make bug fixing more time consuming as the lib projects would have to be edited and then rebuilt. Should we use externals or sub repositories? Should we combine our projects (i.e. runtime, design, and launcher) into one large project? Any help would be appreciated. We have the feeling that our project design has evolved based on the tools that we used and now that we are thinking of switching tools it's difficult for us to see how we can best modify our practices. Or maybe we are the only people are there doing this...? Also, we use Visual Studio for all of our stuff. Thanks.

  Hello, I have the following table in the model with a recursive structure (a page can have children pages) class DynamicPage(models.Model): name = models.CharField("Titre",max_length=200) parent = models.ForeignKey('self',null=True,blank=True) I want to create another table with manytomany relation with this one: class UserMessage(models.Model): name = models.CharField("Nom", max_length=100) page = models.ManyToManyField(DynamicPage) The generated SQL creates the following constraint: ALTER TABLE `website_dynamicpage` ADD CONSTRAINT `parent_id_refs_id_29c58e1b` FOREIGN KEY (`parent_id`) REFERENCES `website_dynamicpage` (`id`); I would like to have the ManyToMany with the page itself (the id) and not with the parent field. • Annotation based data structure visualization - are there similar tools out there?

  For a project at university I plan to build an annotation based tool to visualize/play around with data structures. Here's my idea: Students which want to try out their self-written data structures need to: mark the type of their data structures using some sort of marker annotation e.g. @List public class MyList { ... } so that I know how to represent the data structure need to provide an iterator so that I can retrieve the elements in the right order need to annotate methods for insertion and removal, e.g. @add public boolean insert(E e) { ... } so that I can "bind" that method to some button. Do similar applications exist? I googled a little bit around but didn't find anything like that.

• requireJS : How to structure Javascript for an entire site?

  I have 3000+ lines of javascript that I need to get into a sensible/maintainable structure. I have chosen to use requireJS as it has been recommend to me by a few people. I have a bunch of variables that are used throughout the application and need to be available everywhere. I also have a bunch of functions that need to be available everywhere. Apart from these two dependencies most of the code can be divided off into their own modules. I am having trouble understanding how to manage my main variables so that if one module of code makes changes to the variables the rest of the JS modules will see that change. I think I need to see a few examples that demonstrate how requireJS is intended to work on a larger scale that the examples in the documentation. If anyone is an experienced requireJS user I would love the hear your tips!

• How to structure data... Sequential or Hierarchical?

  I'm going through the exercise of building a CMS that will organize a lot of the common documents that my employer generates each time we get a new sales order. Each new sales order gets a 5 digit number (12222,12223,122224, etc...) but internally we have applied a hierarchy to these numbers: + 121XX |--01 |--02 + 122XX |--22 |--23 |--24 In my table for sales orders, is it better to use the 5 digital number as an ID and populate up or would it be better to use the hierarchical structure that we use when referring to jobs in regular conversation? The only benefit to not populating sequentially seems to be formatting the data later on in my view, but that doesn't sound like a good enough reason to go through the extra work. Thanks

• Creating a file/folder structure and zipping it up?

  I have a directory of image files and I need a php script or shell script that will rename them, create a structure of nested directories, and then insert each image into a specified place in the directory hierarchy. Ideally I would just specify a parent directory for each file and a parent directory for each directory and it would build it. And then finally, I need the script to zip up the whole thing. There's probably not an existing php class that will do all this for me, but if anyone knows of a php class or other script available online that would handle a lot of this logic that would be great.

• Why is the GUID structure declared the way it is?

  In rpc.h, the GUID structure is declared as follows: typedef struct _GUID { DWORD Data1; WORD Data2; WORD Data3; BYTE Data[8]; } GUID; I understand Data1, Data2, and Data3. They define the first, second, and third sets of hex digits when writing out a GUID (XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXX). What I never understood was why the last 2 groups were declared together in the same byte array. Wouldn't this have made more sense (and been easier to code against)? typedef struct _GUID { DWORD Data1; WORD Data2; WORD Data3; WORD Data4; BYTE Data5[6]; } GUID; Anyone know why it is declared this way?

But is it fine to use it as above. The statement *pw = *save is not a deep copy. I do not want to copy each and every member of structure one by one like pw-pw_shell = strdup(save-pw_shell) etc. Is there any better way to do it? Thanks.

• Recover a folder or file in TortoiseSVN whilst also retaining all history.

  In revision 1 a folder existed. In revision 2 the folder was accidently deleted and the change committed. We wish to roll back such that the folder is present, and retain its history. In the TortoiseSVN docs it indicates 'how' in the section titled "Getting a deleted file or folder back". To quote: Getting a deleted file or folder back If you have deleted a file or a folder and already committed that delete operation to the repository, then a normal TortoiseSVN - Revert can't bring it back anymore. But the file or folder is not lost at all. If you know the revision the file or folder got deleted (if you don't, use the log dialog to find out) open the repository browser and switch to that revision. Then select the file or folder you deleted, right-click and select [Context Menu] - [Copy to...] as the target for that copy operation select the path to your working copy. A switch retrieves the file into my working copy as one would expect, however there is no "Copy to" option on the context menu when I right click this working copy. If I open the repos browser, there is a copy to option, but it seems this simply takes a copy of the file. The solution I feel is to do a Branch/Tag, but if I try this from a prior revision to the same path in the repository SVN throws error that the path already exists. • Missing audio and problems playing FLV video converted from 720p .mov file with FFMPEG

  I have some .mov video files recorded from a JVC GC-FM1 HD video camera in 720p mode. I have FFMPEG running on a Linux box that I upload files to and have them encoded into FLV format. The video appears to be encoding ok but there is no audio in the resulting FLV file and when I play it back in Flash Player in a browser or on Adobe Media Player, the video pauses at the start. It appears that Adobe Media Player waits for the progress bar to reach the end of the video before starting the playback - i.e. the video will load, the picture pauses, the progress bar seeks to the end as if the video was playing then when it reaches the end the video picture starts. There is no audio on the video. I am noticing this in the video player I have built with Flash 8 using an FLVPlayback component and attached seekBar. The seek bar will start moving as if the video is playing but the picture remains paused.   Hi I want to find a programmatic solution using C++. I have a 900 files each of 27MB size. (just to inform about the enormity ). Each file has 55K rows and Varying columns. But the header indicates the columns I want to sort the rows in an order w.r.t to a Column Value. I wrote the sorting algorithm for this (definitely my newbie attempts, you may say). This algorithm is working for few numbers, but fails for larger numbers.   Hello, I have been attempting to use Zend Translate to display translated menu items to the user. It works fine until I introduce special characters into the translation files. I instantiate the Zend_Translate object in my bootstrap and pass it in as a translator into Zend_Navigation: $translate = new Zend_Translate( array('adapter' => 'tmx', 'content' => APPLICATION_PATH .'/languages/translation.tmx', 'locale' => 'es' ) ); $navigation->setUseTranslator($translate); I have used several different adapters (array,tmx) in order to see if that made a difference. • Java PHP posting using URLConnector, PHP file doesn't seem to receive parameters

  Hi there, I am trying to post some simple string data to my php script via a java application. My PHP script works fine when I enter the data myself using a web browser (newvector.php?x1=&y1=...) • matplotlib and python multithread file processing

  I have a large number of files to process. I have written a script that get, sort and plot the datas I want. So far, so good. I have tested it and it gives the desired result. Then I wanted to do this using multithreading. I have looked into the doc and examples on the internet, and using one thread in my program works fine. But when I use more, at some point I get random matplotlib error, and I suspect some conflict there, even though I use a function with names for the plots, and iI can't see where the problem could be. • How to not cache a php file where a cachemanifest is beeing called?

  Hi, i'm building a iphone app with jqtouch and i use a cachemanifest to cache all the static files (images, css, javascript) to make it load faster. However the page uses php for the dynamic content and i don't want to cache that. "\n"; ?> This actually works really good except for one irritating thing: From what i read somewhere the file that calls the cachemanifest is automaticly included in the manifest and is beeing cached. Wich means that my start-page index.php, where i call the cachemanifest is beeing cached. This leads to very irritating problems. is there any way to deal with this or any smart workaround? The page is in the cachemanifest listed as NETWORK, but it looks like this is beeing overruled by the fact that the cachemanifest is called from the file.
