  • Using UUIDs for cheap equals() and hashCode()

    - by Tom McIntyre
I have an immutable class, TokenList, which consists of a list of Token objects, which are also immutable: @Immutable public final class TokenList { private final List<Token> tokens; public TokenList(List<Token> tokens) { this.tokens = Collections.unmodifiableList(new ArrayList(tokens)); } public List<Token> getTokens() { return tokens; } } I do several operations on these TokenLists that take multiple TokenLists as inputs and return a single TokenList as the output. There can be arbitrarily many TokenLists going in, and each can have arbitrarily many Tokens. These operations are expensive, and there is a good chance that the same operation (ie the same inputs) will be performed multiple times, so I would like to cache the outputs. However, performance is critical, and I am worried about the expense of performing hashCode() and equals() on these objects that may contain arbitrarily many elements (as they are immutable then hashCode could be cached, but equals will still be expensive). This led me to wondering whether I could use a UUID to provide equals() and hashCode() simply and cheaply by making the following updates to TokenList: @Immutable public final class TokenList { private final List<Token> tokens; private final UUID uuid; public TokenList(List<Token> tokens) { this.tokens = Collections.unmodifiableList(new ArrayList(tokens)); this.uuid = UUID.randomUUID(); } public List<Token> getTokens() { return tokens; } public UUID getUuid() { return uuid; } } And something like this to act as a cache key: @Immutable public final class TopicListCacheKey { private final UUID[] uuids; public TopicListCacheKey(TopicList... topicLists) { uuids = new UUID[topicLists.length]; for (int i = 0; i < uuids.length; i++) { uuids[i] = topicLists[i].getUuid(); } } @Override public int hashCode() { return Arrays.hashCode(uuids); } @Override public boolean equals(Object other) { if (other == this) return true; if (other instanceof TopicListCacheKey) return Arrays.equals(uuids, ((TopicListCacheKey) other).uuids); return false; } } I figure that there are 2^128 different UUIDs and I will probably have at most around 1,000,000 TokenList objects active in the application at any time. Given this, and the fact that the UUIDs are used combinatorially in cache keys, it seems that the chances of this producing the wrong result are vanishingly small. Nevertheless, I feel uneasy about going ahead with it as it just feels 'dirty'. Are there any reasons I should not use this system? Will the performance costs of the SecureRandom used by UUID.randomUUID() outweigh the gains (especially since I expect multiple threads to be doing this at the same time)? Are collisions going to be more likely than I think? Basically, is there anything wrong with doing it this way?? Thanks.

  • Passing a list of files to javac

    - by Robert Menteer
How can I get the javac task to use an existing fileset? In my build.xml I have created several filesets to be used in multiple places throughout build file. Here is how they have been defined: <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.all"> <include name = "**/*.java" /> </fileset> <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.examples"> <include name = "**/Examples/**/*.java" /> </fileset> <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.tests"> <include name = "**/Tests/*.java" /> </fileset> <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.project"> <include name = "**/*.java" /> <exclude name = "**/Examples/**/*.java" /> <exclude name = "**/Tests/**/*.java" /> </fileset> I have also used macrodef to compile the java files so the javac task does not need to be repeated multiple times. The macro looks like this: <macrodef name="compile"> <attribute name="sourceref"/> <sequential> <javac srcdir = "${src}" destdir = "${build}" classpathref = "classpath" includeantruntime = "no" debug = "${debug}"> <filelist dir="." files="@{sourceref}" /> <-- email is about this </javac> </sequential> What I'm trying to do is compile only the classes that are needed for specific targets not all the targets in the source tree. And do so without having to specify the files every time. Here are how the targets are defined: <target name = "compile-examples" depends = "init"> <compile sourceref = "${toString:java.source.examples}" /> </target> <target name = "compile-project" depends = "init"> <compile sourceref = "${toString:java.source.project}" /> </target> <target name = "compile-tests" depends = "init"> <compile sourceref = "${toString:java.source.tests}" /> </target> As you can see each target specifies the java files to be compiled as a simi-colon separated list of absolute file names. The only problem with this is that javac does not support filelist. It also does not support fileset, path or pathset. I've tried using but it treats the list as a single file name. Another thing I tried is sending the reference directly (not using toString) and using but include does not have a ref attribute. SO THE QUESTION IS: How do you get the javac task to use a reference to a fileset that was defined in another part of the build file? I'm not interested in solutions that cause me to have multiple javac tasks. Completely re-writting the macro is acceptable. Changes to the targets are also acceptable provided redundant code between targets is kept to a minimum. p.s. Another problem is that fileset wants a comma separated list. I've only done a brief search for a way to convert semi-colons to commas and haven't found a way to do that. p.p.s. Sorry for the yelling but some people are too quick to post responses that don't address the subject.

    hi all, i am a newbie to javascript... i have two select boxes with multiple selection enabled.When i select an element from first select box it scrolls into view the corrosponding element from the second list.The single selection goes fine in all browsers explorer,firefox,chrome. now, if i select the first,last element from the first selection box the second select box does not scrolls into view the last selected element in chrome browser.although , it works fine in internet explorer and firefox. Please help me to make it run in google chrome browser. <html> <head> <script language="javascript"> function SyncListsL(){ for (var i = 0; i <= [document.puser.user_select.length]-1; i++) { if(document.puser.user_select.options[i].selected == true) { document.puser.user_select2.options[i].selected=true; document.puser.user_select.options[i].selected=true; } else{ document.puser.user_select2.options[i].selected = false; document.puser.user_select.options[i].selected=false; } } } function SyncListsR(){ for (i = 0; i <= [document.puser.user_select2.length]-1; i++) { if(document.puser.user_select2.options[i].selected == true) { document.puser.user_select.options[i].selected=true; document.puser.user_select2.options[i].selected=true; } else{ document.puser.user_select.options[i].selected = false; document.puser.user_select2.options[i].selected=false; } } } </script> <title>scrollintoview</title> </head> <body bgcolor="e2dbc5"> <form name="puser" > <table align="center"> <tr> <td align="right" bgcolor="#eeeadd"> <font size=2> <select name="user_select2" multiple size="5" onChange="SyncListsR()" style="width:35mm"> <option value="a1" title="a1">a1</option> <option value="a2" title="a2">a2</option> <option value="ab" title="ab">ab</option> <option value="abc" title="abc">abc</option> <option value="e1" title="e1">e1</option> <option value="e2" title="e2">e2</option> <option value="new" title="new">new</option> </select> </font></td> <td align="left" bgcolor="#eeeadd"> <font size=2> <select name="user_select" multiple size="5" onChange="SyncListsL()" style="width:50mm"> <option value="first" title="first">first</option> <option value="last" title="last">last</option> <option value="ghi" title="ghi">ghi</option> <option value="User" title="User">User</option> <option value="ed" title="ed">ed</option> <option value="edit" title="edit">edit</option> <option value="second" title="second">second</option> </select> </font></td> </tr> </table> </form> </body> </html>

  • Info on UIDeviceFamily key in Info.plist

    - by dbv
The iPad programming guide says I have to include the UIDeviceFamily key in Info.plist. It also says that the transitioning a target to iPad should have added the key. It didn't. I tried creating blank projects, both iPad-only and universal, and neither got that key. Google comes up short too. What's the story on this mysterious key? The simulator doesn't mind the fact it's missing.

  • Reactive Extensions vs FileSystemWatcher

    - by Joel Mueller
One of the things that has long bugged me about the FileSystemWatcher is the way it fires multiple events for a single logical change to a file. I know why it happens, but I don't want to have to care - I just want to reparse the file once, not 4-6 times in a row. Ideally, there would be an event that only fires when a given file is done changing, rather than every step along the way. Over the years I've come up with various solutions to this problem, of varying degrees of ugliness. I thought Reactive Extensions would be the ultimate solution, but there's something I'm not doing right, and I'm hoping someone can point out my mistake. I have an extension method: public static IObservable<IEvent<FileSystemEventArgs>> GetChanged(this FileSystemWatcher that) { return Observable.FromEvent<FileSystemEventArgs>(that, "Changed"); } Ultimately, I would like to get one event per filename, within a given time period - so that four events in a row with a single filename are reduced to one event, but I don't lose anything if multiple files are modified at the same time. BufferWithTime sounds like the ideal solution. var bufferedChange = watcher.GetChanged() .Select(e => e.EventArgs.FullPath) .BufferWithTime(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(1)) .Where(e => e.Count > 0) .Select(e => e.Distinct()); When I subscribe to this observable, a single change to a monitored file triggers my subscription method four times in a row, which rather defeats the purpose. If I remove the Distinct() call, I see that each of the four calls contains two identical events - so there is some buffering going on. Increasing the TimeSpan passed to BufferWithTime seems to have no effect - I went as high as 20 seconds without any change in behavior. This is my first foray into Rx, so I'm probably missing something obvious. Am I doing it wrong? Is there a better approach? Thanks for any suggestions...

  • ObjectiveC builtin template system ?

    - by Aurélien Vallée
I am developing an iPhone application and I use HTML to display formatted text. I often display the same webpage, but with a different content. I would like to use a template HTML file, and then fill it with my diffent values. I wonder if ObjectiveC has a template system similar to ERB in Ruby. That would allow to do things like Template: <HTML> <HEAD> </HEAD> <BODY> <H1>{{{title}}}</H1> <P>{{{content}}}</P> </BODY> </HTML> ObjectiveC (or what it may be in an ideal world) Template* template = [[Template alloc] initWithFile:@"my_template.tpl"]; [template fillMarker:@"title" withContent:@"My Title"]; [template fillMarker:@"content" withContent:@"My text here"]; [template process]; NSString* result = [template result]; [template release]; And the result string would contain: <HTML> <HEAD> </HEAD> <BODY> <H1>My Title</H1> <P>My text here</P> </BODY> </HTML> The above example could be achieved with some text replacement, but that would be a pain to maintain. I would also need something like loops inside templates. For instance if I have multiple items to display, i would like to generate multiple divs. Thanks for reading :)

Hi Guys, I was having issues in log4net when i updated my solutions to .net 4.0 , and then i downloaded the source of it and built log4net and targeted it to .net 4.0 and used it in my projects. initially when i referred log4net that is targeted to run time 2.0 it complied and run the application but log did not work. now when i run my project with log4net targeted to .net 4.0 i get the error " The type initializer for 'Log4NetTest.TestLog' threw an exception." Any Idea how to solve this

  • Entity Framework - Condition on one to many join (Lambda)

    - by nirpi
Hi, I have 2 entities: Customer & Account, where a customer can have multiple accounts. On the account, I have a "PlatformTypeId" field, which I need to condition on (multiple values), among other criterions. I'm using Lambda expressions, to build the query. Here's a snippet: var customerQuery = (from c in context.CustomerSet.Include("Accounts") select c); if (criterions.UserTypes != null && criterions.UserTypes.Count() > 0) { List<short> searchCriterionsUserTypes = criterions.UserTypes.Select(i => (short)i).ToList(); customerQuery = customerQuery.Where(CommonDataObjects.LinqTools.BuildContainsExpression<Customer, short>(c => c.UserTypeId, searchCriterionsUserTypes)); } // Other criterions, including the problematic platforms condition (below) var customers = customerQuery.ToList(); I can't figure out how to build the accounts' platforms condition: if (criterions.Platforms != null && criterions.Platforms.Count() > 0) { List<short> searchCriterionsPlatforms = criterions.Platforms.Select(i => (short)i).ToList(); customerQuery = customerQuery.Where(c => c.Accounts.Where(LinqTools.BuildContainsExpression<Account, short>(a => a.PlatformTypeId, searchCriterionsPlatforms))); } (The BuildContainsExpression is a method we use to build the expression for the multi-select) I'm getting a compilation error: The type arguments for method 'System.Linq.Enumerable.Where(System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable, System.Func)' cannot be inferred from the usage. Try specifying the type arguments explicitly. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks, Nir.

  • Installing into the GAC with WiX 3.0

    - by Jeff Yates
I have a DLL that I would like to install into the Global Assembly Cache so that it can be referenced from multiple locations. I have a File declaration with the Assembly attribute set to ".net" but when the installation tries to install the DLL into the GAC, I get the following error (I have tided it up a bit to make it more readable): MSI (s) (58:38) [19:14:31:031]: Product: MyProductName 1.01 -- Error 1935. An error occurred during the installation of assembly  'Compass,   version="1.0.0.0",   culture="neutral",   publicKeyToken="392B26B760D48103",   processorArchitecture="MSIL"'. Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x80131043. assembly interface:       IAssemblyCacheItem, function:             Commit, component: {53AEE63B-F356-4D4F-8D61-EB0640A6E160} I have hunted around to find out what this means and the error relates to FUSION_E_UNEXPECTED_MODULE_FOUND. This link also includes this information: /// When installing multi-file assemblies into the GAC, the hash of each module is /// checked against the hash of that file stored in the manifest. If the /// hash of one of the files in the multi-file assembly does not match what is recorded /// in the manifest, FUSION_E_UNEXPECTED_MODULE_FOUND will be returned. /// The name of the error, and the text description of it, are somewhat confusing. /// The reason this error code is described this way is that the internally, /// Fusion/CLR implements installation of assemblies in the GAC, by installing /// multiple "streams" that are individually committed. /// Each stream has its hash computed, and all the hashes found /// are compared against the hashes in the manifest, at the end of the installation. /// Hence, a file hash mismatch appears as if an "unexpected" module was found. Unfortunately, this doesn't make much sense to me and I don't see how it relates to my assembly, which isn't fancy or complex from my perspective (it's just a regular .NET 3.5 class library and the current installation test is occurring on my development machine, which is a valid target environment for my project - 32-bit Windows XP SP3). Can anyone shed some light on why I might be getting this error and how I might hope to fix it?

  • TFS 2010, can I migrate source code only ?

    - by driis
Our old TFS 2008 installation is getting old, and we would like to migrate to TFS 2010. However, the structure of our team projects is not so well thought out, and there has been various experiments with process templates and editing of work items and so on. Therefore, I would like to migrate our source code to TFS 2010, with full history, and keep all other aspects of the new TFS 2010 installation as clean as possible. How can I do that ?

  • How to fix the endless printing loop bug in Nevrona Rave

    - by Sean B. Durkin
Nevrona Designs' Rave Reports is a Report Engine for use by Embarcadero's Delphi IDE. This is what I call the Rave Endless Loop bug. In Rave Reports version 6.5.0 (VCL10) that comes bundled with Delphi 2006, there is a nortorious bug that plagues many Rave report developers. If you have a non-empty dataset, and the data rows for this dataset fit exactly into a page (that is to say there are zero widow rows), then upon PrintPreview, Rave will get stuck in an infinite loop generating pages. This problem has been previously reported in this newsgroup under the following headings: "error: generating infinite pages"; Hugo Hiram 20/9/2006 8:44PM "Rave loop bug. Please help"; Tomas Lazar 11/07/2006 7:35PM "Loop on full page of data?"; Tony Chistiansen 23/12/2004 3:41PM reply to (3) by another complainant; Oliver Piche "Endless lopp print bug"; Richso 9/11/2004 4:44PM In each of these postings, there was no response from Nevrona, and no solution was reported. Possibly, the problem has also been reported on an allied newsgroup (nevrona.public.rave.reports.general), to wit: 6. "Continuously generating report"; Jobard 20/11/2005 Although it is not clear to me if (6) is the Rave Endless loop bug or another problem. This posting did get a reply from Nevrona, but it was more in relation to multiple regions ("There is a problem when using multiple regions that go over a page-break.") than the problem of zero widows.

  • Very slow compile times on Visual Studio

    - by johnc
We are getting very slow compile times, which can take upwards of 20+ minutes on dual core 2GHz, 2G Ram machines. A lot of this is due to the size of our solution which has grown to 70+ projects, as well as VSS which is a bottle neck in itself when you have a lot of files. (swapping out VSS is not an option unfortunately, so I don't want this to descend into a VSS bash) We are looking at combing projects (not nice, as we like the separation of concerns, but is a good opportunity to refactor away some dead wood). We are also looking at having multiple solutions to achieve greater separation of concerns and quicker compile times for each element of the application. This I can see will become a dll hell as we try to keep things in synch. I am interested to know how other teams have dealt with this scaling issue, what do you do when your code base reaches a critical mass that you are wasting half the day watching the status bar deliver compile messages UPDATE Apologies, I neglected to mention this is a C# solution. Thanks for all the cpp suggestions, but it's been a few years since I've had to worry about headers. At a distance I say I miss C++, but I'm not sure I want to go back EDIT: Nice suggestions that have helped so far (not saying there aren't other nice suggestions below, just what has helped) New 3GHz laptop - the power of lost utilization works wonders when whinging to management Disable Anti Virus during compile 'Disconnecting' from VSS (actually the network) during compile - I may get us to remove VS-VSS integration altogether and stick to using the VSS UI Still not rip-snorting through a compile, but every bit helps. Orion did mention in a comment that generics may have a play also. From my tests there does appear to be a minimal performance hit, but not high enough to sure - compile times can be inconsistent due to disc activity. Due to time limitations, my tests didn't include as many Generics, or as much code, as would appear in live system, so that may accumulate. I wouldn't avoid using generics where they are supposed to be used, just for compile time performance WORKAROUND We are testing the practice of building new areas of the application in new solutions, importing in the latest dlls as required, them integrating them into the larger solution when we are happy with them. We may also do them same to existing code by creating temporary solutions that just encapsulate the areas we need to work on, and throwing them away after reintegrating the code. We need to weigh up the time it will take to reintegrate this code against the time we gain by not having Rip Van Winkle like experiences with rapid recompiling during development.

  • How should I proceed to upgrade from TFS2008 to TFS2010

    - by Stephane
Hi, We have a TFS2008 server with multiple team projects (about 20) What is the best way to migrate to TFS2010 without losing the history. I believe there are 2 ways, correct me if I'm wrong: installing a fresh tfs2010 and importing the DB from TFS 2008 or in-place upgrade. What is your recommendation and why? Are there any issue I should be prepared to face? Any advice is welcome.

  • Synchronizing Asynchronous request handlers in Silverlight environment

    - by Eric Lifka
For our senior design project my group is making a Silverlight application that utilizes graph theory concepts and stores the data in a database on the back end. We have a situation where we add a link between two nodes in the graph and upon doing so we run analysis to re-categorize our clusters of nodes. The problem is that this re-categorization is quite complex and involves multiple queries and updates to the database so if multiple instances of it run at once it quickly garbles data and breaks (by trying to re-insert already used primary keys). Essentially it's not thread safe, and we're trying to make it safe, and that's where we're failing and need help :). The create link function looks like this: private Semaphore dblock = new Semaphore(1, 1); // This function is on our service reference and gets called // by the client code. public int addNeed(int nodeOne, int nodeTwo) { dblock.WaitOne(); submitNewNeed(createNewNeed(nodeOne, nodeTwo)); verifyClusters(nodeOne, nodeTwo); dblock.Release(); return 0; } private void verifyClusters(int nodeOne, int nodeTwo) { // Run analysis of nodeOne and nodeTwo in graph } All copies of addNeed should wait for the first one that comes in to finish before another can execute. But instead they all seem to be running and conflicting with each other in the verifyClusters method. One solution would be to force our front end calls to be made synchronously. And in fact, when we do that everything works fine, so the code logic isn't broken. But when it's launched our application will be deployed within a business setting and used by internal IT staff (or at least that's the plan) so we'll have the same problem. We can't force all clients to submit data at different times, so we really need to get it synchronized on the back end. Thanks for any help you can give, I'd be glad to supply any additional information that you could need!

  • MSBuild: Add additional files to compile without altering the project file

    - by Craig Norton
After looking around I can't find a simple answer to this problem. I am trying to create an MSBuild file to allow me to easily use SpecFlow and NUnit within Visual Studio 2010 express. The file below is not complete this is just a proof of concept and it needs to be made more generic. <Project DefaultTargets="Build" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003"> <PropertyGroup> <BuildDependsOn> BuildSolution; SpecFlow; BuildProject; NUnit; </BuildDependsOn> </PropertyGroup> <PropertyGroup> <Solution>C:\Users\Craig\Documents\My Dropbox\Cells\Cells.sln</Solution> <CSProject>C:\Users\Craig\Documents\My Dropbox\Cells\Configuration\Configuration.csproj</CSProject> <DLL>C:\Users\Craig\Documents\My Dropbox\Cells\Configuration\bin\Debug\Configuration.dll</DLL> </PropertyGroup> <Target Name="Build" DependsOnTargets="$(BuildDependsOn)"> </Target> <Target Name="BuildSolution"> <MSBuild Projects="$(Solution)" Properties="Configuration=Debug" /> </Target> <Target Name="SpecFlow"> <Exec Command="SpecFlow generateall $(CSProject)" /> </Target> <Target Name="BuildProject"> <MSBuild Projects="$(CSProject)" Properties="Configuration=Debug" /> </Target> <Target Name="NUnit"> <Exec Command='NUnit /run "$(DLL)"' /> </Target> The SpecFlow Task looks in the .csproj file and creates a SpecFlowFeature1.feature.cs. I need to include this file when building the .csproj so that NUnit can use it. I know I could modify (either directly or on a copy) the .csproj file to include the generated file but I'd prefer to avoid this. My question is: Is there a way to use the MSBuild Task to build the project file and tell it to include an additional file to include in the build? Thank you.
