  Hi, I am writing a parser, which call some functions dependent on some value. I can implement this logic with simple switch like this switch(some_val) { case 0: func0(); break; case 1: func1(); break; } or with delegates and dictionary like this delegate void some_delegate(); Dictionary<int, some_delegate> some_dictionary = new Dictionary<int, some_delegate>(); some_dictionary[0] = func0; some_dictionary[1] = func1; some_dictionary[some_value].Invoke(); Are this two methods equal and which is preferred? • SVN Delete with wildcard?

  I'm migrating a VSS repository to SVN and inadvertently included all of the _vti_cnf, *.scc files in the first check-in. I'd like to remove these from SVN. (Not permanently, of course - just in the HEAD). The application in question is quite large, and finding and deleting these files on a folder-by-folder basis will take forever. Suggestions? There must be some obvious way to do this, but the proximity of the weekend is interfering with my higher brain functions.

• Thoughts on a Shoutbox anyone?

  I'm wanting to create a shoutbox, though I'm wondering if there is another way to go about this rather than using setInterval to query the database for new shouts every number of seconds. Honestly, I don't like having to go about it this way. Seems a bit redundant and repetitive and just plain old wrong. Not to mention the blinking of the shouts as it grabs the data. So I'm wondering on how the professionals do this? I mean, I've seen shoutboxes that work surperb and doesn't seem to be using any setInterval or setTimeout javascript functions to do this. Can anyone suggest any ideas or an approach to this that doesn't use setInterval or setTimeout?? Thanks :)

• Is it naughty to have a large utility file?

  In my C project I have quite a large utils.c file. It is really full of many utilities of different sorts. I feel a bit naughty just stuffing different miscellaneous functions in there. For example it has some utilities related to low level stuff such as a lowercase() function, and it also has some quite sophisticated utilities such as converting to/from different colour formats. My question is, is it very naughty to have such a large utils.c with many different types of utilities in it? Should I break it up into many different kinds of utility files? Such as graphics_utils.c and so on What do you think?

• Keycodes of function keys with F-lock off?

  Many recent keyboard from Microsoft and Logitech have a so-called F-Lock key, which toggles the function keys F1 to F12 between their traditional keycodes and new meanings that are printed onto the keys: F1=Help F2=Undo F3=Redo F4=Open ... . (See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-Lock.) This means that long-established shortcuts such as Alt+F4 no longer work if the F-lock is off, and googling shows that quite a few people are unhappy about this. So I'm wondering, what virtual key (VK) codes do the function keys send when F-lock is off? VK_F13 to VK_F24 perhaps? Or do they not trigger standard keyboard events at all? (I haven't got such a keyboard to try and find out myself, and didn't manage to dig up anything on MSDN about this.)

• object won't die (still references to it that I can't find)

  I'm using parallel-python and start a new job server in a function. after the functions ends it still exists even though I didn't return it out of the function (I used weakref to test this). I guess there's still some references to this object somewhere. My two theories: It starts threads and it logs to root logger. My questions: can I somehow findout in which namespace there is still a reference to this object. I have the weakref reference. Does anyone know how to detach a logger?   I have a data structures homework, that in addition to the regular AVL tree functions, I have to add a function that returns the minimum gap between any two numbers in the AVL tree (the nodes in the AVL actually represent numbers.) Lets say we have the numbers (as nodes) 1 5 12 20 23 21 in the AVL tree, the function should return the minimum gap between any two numbers. In this situation it should return "1" which is |20-21| or |21-20|. It should be done in O(1). Tried to think alot about it, and I know there is a trick but just couldn't find it, I have spent hours on this. There was another task which is to find the maximum gap, which is easy, it is the difference between the minimal and maximal number.

  I'm working with websites written in PHP, along with many other programmers, and sometimes I have to deal with really awful code. Indentation totally messed up, curly braces in the wrong places, terrible whitespace use, it really hurts my eyes and actually makes my work harder and take longer. Is there a tool where you can specify your coding style and then it applies it to files? I'm sure there must be such functions in different IDEs, but I need an independent tool as I code with simple notepads like Notepad++ or the like. ( if it's such a function in Notepad++, I didn't see it )

The problem appears when the refresh happens after the transfer takes place. I'm getting a 404 Not Found error and the URL changes for http://localhost/305. Notice that 5 * 60 + 5 = 305. Do you know why is this happening? got a solution? PD: I use transfer because I need to access some properties of regularpage.aspx on otherpage.aspx, maybe you could provide another solution for this too.

• struct method linking

  I'm updating some old code that has several POD structs that were getting zero'd out by memset (don't blame me...I didn't write this part). Part of the update changed some of them to classes that use private internal pointers that are now getting wiped out by the memset. So I added a [non-virtual] reset() method to the various structs and refactored the code to call that instead. One particular struct developed an "undefined reference to `blah::reset()'" error. Changing it from a struct to a class fixed the error. Calling nm on the .o file h, the mangled function names for that method look the same (whether it's a class or a struct). I'm using g++ 4.4.1, on Ubuntu. I hate the thought that this might be a compiler/linker bug, but I'm not sure what else it could be. Am I missing some fundamental difference between structs and classes? I thought the only meaningful ones were the public/private defaults and the way everyone thinks about them.

• TeamCity for continuous integration with Visual Studio 2010 solutions/projects

  I am running TeamCity build 5.1.1 on a virtual machine that also hosts our SVN environment. A team I support has recently made the move from Visual Studio 2008/Silverlight 3.0 to Visual Studio 2010/Silverlight 4.0 and when investigating how to do continuous integration with Visual Studio 2010 solutions/projects, it is not as cut and dried as it appeared to be in Visual Studio 2008. Previously I was using Web Deployment Projects and targeting different Release Configurations in TeamCity, which would use the Web Deployment Project to package/deploy the code to our various environments. However when checking out the new Publish ability in Visual Studio 2010 I cannot find a way to specify which location to deploy to. Does everything need to be done in MSBuild now (in the solution file or maybe the Web project file?). If anyone has any examples of how they've done Continuous Integration using TeamCity and Visual Studio 2010, it would be greatly appreciated as I am coming up blank at the moment.

• LNK1106 with big binary resource

  I have a rather huge .dat-file (896MB) included as a BIN resource in my project. Now I get a LNK1106 link error ("fatal error LNK1106: invalid file or disk full: cannot seek to 0x382A3920".) I use Visual Studio 2005 under Windows XP, and have tried on a 4GB RAM machine with high Virtual Memory settings and lots of disk space. I have tried a number of different optimization flags, but to no avail. Does anyone have a clue? EDIT: I have narrowed it down to a specific size of the compiled resource. If the .res file is 544078588 bytes (about 518.9MB) or larger, the error occurs. If it is smaller it works just fine. Still no solution, though...

Firebug is showing the "302 Moved Temporarily", and the response headers. So why is this triggering the error event, and not passing along the proper 302 code, and headers? Is this something to do with the Same Origin since the bouncing script and the fetching script are both on the same server? Is this jQuery or Javascript's fault?

• Page containing Microsoft Chart Control returns Service Unavailable

  I have a frustrating problem with an asp.net mvc view containing the Microsoft Chart control. When I request the view containing the control I get the following error. Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. When I run the project under the visual studio 2008 dev server it works fine. When I deploy the project to the staging server I get the error. To make this even more frustrating when I deploy to a different site on the same server under a virtual directory it works. I also get no error messages in the event log or elmah when this happens. Has anyone else encountered this? What did you do to resolve it?

• Perl When is using AUTOLOAD OK?

  In "Perl Best Practices" the very first line in the section on AUTOLOAD is: Don't use AUTOLOAD However all the cases he describes are dealing with OO or Modules. I have a stand alone script in which some command line switches control which versions of particular functions get defined. Now I know I could just take the conditionals and the evals and stick them naked at the top of my file before everything else, but I find it convenient and cleaner to put them in AUTOLOAD at the end of the file. Is this bad practice / style? If you think so why, and is there a another way to do it?

• EC2 instance suddenly refusing SSH connections and won't respond to ping

  My instance was running fine and this morning I was able to access a Ruby on Rails app hosted on it. An hour later I suddenly wasn't able to access my site, my SSH connection attempts were refused and the server wasn't even responding to ping. I didn't change anything on my system during that hour and reboots aren't fixing it. I've never had any problems connecting or pinging the system before. Can someone please help? • Inverse Logistic Function / Reverse Sigmoid Function

  I am currently coding up a fuzzy logic library in java. I have found the equations for all the standard functions - Grade, inverseGrade, Triangle, Trapezoid, Gaussian. However, I can't find the inverse of the sigmoid/ logistic function. The way I have written the logistic function is java is : //f(x) = 1/(1+e(-x)) public double logistic(double x){ return (1/(1+(Math.exp(-x))); } But I can't work out or find the inverse anywhere. My algebraic/calculus abilities are fairly limited, hence why I haven't been able to work out the inverse of the function. Any hints or pointers would be a big help. Thanks

• NSIS Installer - Displaying different licences

  Heya, I'm trying to modify an existing NSIS install script to allow for different licence files to be presented to the user depending on whether they are a new or existing user. I have pre-existing code which detects an existing install in the .onInit section. However I'm running into bumps trying to use the NSIS provided licence screen e.g. !InsertMacro MUI_PAGE_LICENSE Content\Licence.rtf I would like to be able to choose between Licence and Licence2.rtf (though they'll be renamed something representative in the final version). I've tried using selectable sections calling functions which nest the !insertmacro but that doesn't work because it needs to be in the base level of the script. I can't change the parameter to be runtime definable because it needs to know what the file is at compile time to build it into the installer. I know I can roll my own custom page called from a function and do it that way but I was wondering if anyone had got the NSIS installer working with using the MUI_PAGE_LICENSE and different licences. • Zend AMF throwing InvocationTargetException

  Hi, I am trying to make a service call to a php function from flex, through Zend AMF. Most of the functions get called fine, but for one particular function, it throws the following exception: InvocationTargetException:There was an error while invoking the operation. Check your operation inputs or server code and try invoking the operation again. Reason: Fatal error: Call to a member function getInvokeArguments() on a non-object in D:\wamp\www\ZendFramework\library\Zend\Amf\Server.php on line 328 I am not able to debug through this - has anyone faced any issue like this before, or have any ideas how this can be debugged?
