• "Local transaction already has 1 non-XA Resource: cannot add more resources" error

  After reading previous questions about this error, it seems like all of them conclude that you need to enable XA on all of the data sources. But: What if I don't want a distributed transaction? What would I do if I want to start transactions on two different databases at the same time, but commit the transaction on one database and roll back the transaction on the other? I'm wondering how my code actually initiated a distributed transaction. It looks to me like I'm starting completely separate transactions on each of the databases. Info about the application: The application is an EJB running on a Sun Java Application Server 9.1 I use something like the following spring context to set up the hibernate session factories: <bean id="dbADatasource" class="org.springframework.jndi.JndiObjectFactoryBean"> <property name="jndiName" value="jdbc/dbA"/> </bean> <bean id="dbASessionFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.LocalSessionFactoryBean"> <property name="dataSource" ref="dbADatasource" /> <property name="hibernateProperties"> [hibernate properties...] </property> <property name="mappingResources"> [mapping resources...] </property> </bean> <bean id="dbBDatasource" class="org.springframework.jndi.JndiObjectFactoryBean"> <property name="jndiName" value="jdbc/dbB"/> </bean> <bean id="dbBSessionFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.LocalSessionFactoryBean"> <property name="dataSource" ref="dbBDatasource" /> <property name="hibernateProperties"> [hibernate properties...] </property> <property name="mappingResources"> [mapping resources...] </property> </bean> Both of the JNDI resources are javax.sql.ConnectionPoolDatasoure's. They actually both point to the same connection pool, but we have two different JNDI resources because there's the possibility that the two groups of tables will move to different databases in the future. Then in code, I do: sessionA = dbASessionFactory.openSession(); sessionB = dbBSessionFactory.openSession(); sessionA.beginTransaction(); sessionB.beginTransaction(); The sessionB.beginTransaction() line produces the error in the title of this post - sometimes. I ran the app on two different sun application servers. On one runs it fine, the other throws the error. I don't see any difference in how the two servers are configured although they do connect to different, but equivalent databases. So the question is Why doesn't the above code start completely independent transactions? How can I force it to start independent transactions rather than a distributed transaction? What configuration could cause the difference in behavior between the two application servers? Thanks.

• creating a tooltip for a line drawn on cartesiandatacanvas in flex

  I am trying to draw a line on cartesiandatacanvas. While I am able to draw lines easily using the canvas.moveTo and canvas.lineTo methods, I cannot provide a tooltip to the line if I use that functionality. I have tried creating a label(when ever I draw a line) and adding a tooltip to it but since I show the lines in a 10*10 grid both vertical and horizontal there is a overlap and it is confusing. So now I am trying to create a line object that extends shape or UIComponent. I cannot add this object to canvas using the addChild method it does not work. The addDataChild method works but it messes with the positioning of the line. Can someone help with a solution to this. Simply put I want to draw lines on a datacanvas and add tooltips to them. • iPhone Memory Error - when using Build & Debug, How to debug?

  I'm a newbie and need some help with an iPhone App running on the Simulator. The app works fine running with Build & Run or Build & Run - breakpoints off, but blows when running with Build & Debug - Breakpoints on. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. • Atomikos rollback doesn't clear JPA persistence context?

  I have a Spring/JPA/Hibernate application and am trying to get it to pass my Junit integration tests against H2 and MySQL. Currently I am using Atomikos for transactions and C3P0 for connection pooling. Despite my best efforts my DAO integration one of the tests is failing with org.hibernate.NonUniqueObjectException. In the failing test I create an object with the "new" operator, set the ID and call persist on it. @Test @Transactional public void save_UserTestDataNewObject_RecordSetOneLarger() { int expectedNumberRecords = 4; User newUser = createNewUser(); dao.persist(newUser); List<User> allUsers = dao.findAll(0, 1000); assertEquals(expectedNumberRecords, allUsers.size()); } In the previous testmethod I do the same thing (createNewUser() is a helper method that creates an object with the same ID everytime). I am sure that creating and persisting a second object with the same Id is the cause, but each test method is in own transaction and the object I created is bound to a private test method variable. I can even see in the logs that Spring Test and Atomikos are rolling back the transaction associated with each test method. I would have thought the rollback would have also cleared the persistence context too. On a hunch, I added an a call to dao.clear() at the beginning of the faulty test method and the problem went away!! So rollback doesn't clear the persistence context??? If not, then who does??   Hi I have a weird problems with NSArray where some of the members of the objects in my array are going out of scope but not the others: I have a simple object called Section. It has 3 members. @interface Section : NSObject { NSNumber *section_Id; NSNumber *routeId; NSString *startLocationName; } @property(nonatomic,retain) NSNumber *section_Id; @property(nonatomic,retain) NSNumber *routeId; @property(nonatomic,retain) NSString *startLocationName; @end @implementation Section @synthesize section_Id; @synthesize routeId; @synthesize startLocationName; //Some static finder methods to get list of Sections from the db + (NSMutableArray *) findAllSections:{ - (void)dealloc { [section_Id release]; [routeId release]; [startLocationName release]; [super dealloc]; } @end I fill it from a database in a method called findAllSection self.sections = [Section findAllSections]; In find all sections I create some local variables fill them with data from db. NSNumber *secId = [NSNumber numberWithInt:id_section]; NSNumber *rteId = [NSNumber numberWithInt:id_route]; NSString *startName = @""; Then create a new Section and store these local variable's data in the Section Section *section = [[Section alloc] init]; section.section_Id = secId; section.routeId = rteId; section.startLocationName = startName; Then I add the section to the array [sectionsArray addObject:section]; Then I clean up, releasing local variables and the section I added to the array [secId release]; [rteId release]; [startName release]; [locEnd_name release]; [section release]; In a loop repeat for all Sections (release local variables and section is done in every loop) The method returns and I check the array and all the Sections are there. I cant seem to dig further down to see the values of the Section objects in the array (is this possible) Later I try and retrieve one of the Sections I get it from the array Section * section = [self.sections objectAtIndex:row]; Then check the value NSLog(@" SECTION SELECTED:%@",section.section_Id); BUT call to section.section_Id crashed as section.section_Id is out of scope. I check the other members of this Section object and theyre ok. After some trial and error I find that by commenting out the release of the member variable the object is OK. //[secId release]; [rteId release]; [startName release]; [locEnd_name release]; [section release]; My questions are: Am I cleaning up ok? Should I release the object added to an array and the local variable in the function? Is my dealloc ok in Section? Does this code look ok and should I be looking elsewhere for the problem? I'm not doing anything complicated just filling array from DB use it in Table Cell. If its a stupid mistake then tell me (I did put NEWBIE on the question so dont be shocked it was asked) I can comment out the release but would prefer to know why or if code looks ok then ill need further digging. the only place that secId is released is in the dealloc. • How to determine if two generic type values are equal?

  I'm trying to figure out how I can successfully determine if two generic type values are equal to each other. Based on Mark Byers' answer on this question I would think I can just use value.Equals() where value is a generic type. My actual problem is in a LinkedList implementation, but the problem can be shown with this simpler example. class GenericOjbect<T> { public T Value { get; private set; } public GenericOjbect(T value) { Value = value; } public bool Equals(T value) { return (Value.Equals(value)); } } Now I define an instance of GenericObject<StringBuilder> containing new StringBuilder("StackOverflow"). I would expect to get true if I call Equals(new StringBuilder("StackOverflow") on this GenericObject instance, but I get false. This is what I expected. But when comparing the GenericObject objects, its Equals() method (the third line) returns false. Interestingly enough, the fourth compare method does return true. I'd think the third and fourth comparison are actually doing the same thing. I would have expected true. Because in the Equals() method of the GenericObject class, both value and Value are of type T which in this case is a StringBuilder. Based on Mark Byers' answer in this question, I would've expected the Value.Equals() method to be using the StringBuilder's Equals() method. And as I've shown, the StringBuilder's Equal() method does return true. I've even tried public bool Equals(T value) { return EqualityComparer<T>.Default.Equals(Value, value); } but that also returns false. So, two questions here: Why doesn't the code return true? How could I implement the Equals method so it does return true?

  Hi, Lately, I've been looking into an implementation of an incremental PCA algorithm in python - I couldn't find something that would meet my needs so I did some reading and implemented an algorithm I found in some paper. Here is the module's code - the relevant paper on which it is based is mentioned in the module's documentation. I would appreciate any feedback from people who are interested in this. Martin "Incremental Eigenalysis for Classification" which appeared in British Machine Vision Conference, volume 1, pages 286-295, September 1998. Principal components are updated sequentially as new observations are introduced. Each new observation (x) is projected on the eigenspace spanned by the current principal components (U) and the residual vector (r = x - U(U.T*x)) is used as a new principal component (U' = [U r]). The new principal components are then rotated by a rotation matrix (R) whose columns are the eigenvectors of the transformed covariance matrix (D=U'.T*C*U) to yield p + 1 principal components. From those, only the first p are selected. • Unable to use NSURLConnection to get contents of password/username protected webpage

  I am trying to get the contents of a webpage that requires a password and user name to access. I am using a NSURLConnection object to get it however when I write the NSMutableData object that is returned to a file all I get is the login page. Normally when you try to load the password protected page when you are not logged in it redirects to the login page however I thought that if I provided valid credentials then this I would be able to view the password protected page. Also I do not know if it is relevant the website is using a microsoft mysql database on an IIS (internet information server). Note: [protectionSpace authenticationMethod] returns NSURLAuthenticationMethodServerTrust I am pretty unfamiliar with this so any ideas would be greatly appreciated.   I am trying to build a website using JBoss 7.1.1 and RESTeasy. I have managed to constructed and deploy and EAR with a both a WAR and an EJB-JAR contained within: voyager-app.ear META-INF/MANIFEST.MF META-INF/application.xml META-INF/jboss-app.xml lib/voyager-lib.jar voyager-adm.war voyager-ejb.jar voyager-web.war So far things are very simple. voyager-adm.war & voyager-lib.jar are empty (just the manifest file) but I know that I'm going to have code for them shortly. There is just one Stateful EJB - HarbourMasterBean (with just a local interface) and a few Database Entity Beans in the EJB jar file: voyager-ejb.jar META-INF/MANIFEST.MF META-INF/persistence.xml com/nutrastat/voyager/db/HarbourMasterBean.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/HarbourMasterLocal.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/PortEntity.class com/nutrastat/voyager/db/ShipEntity.class As far as I can tell the EJBs deploy correctly because the database units are created and the log shows that the publication of some HarbourMaster references: java:global/voyager-app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:module/harbour-master!com.nutrastat.voyager.db.HarbourMasterLocal java:global/voyager-app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master java:app/voyager-ejb/harbour-master java:module/harbour-master The problem lies in getting the HarbourMaster EJB injected into my web bean.   Ok, here's the deal: I have code that works in C#, but when I call it from PowerShell, it fails. I can't quite figure it out, but it's something specific to PowerShell. Thus, you can see that running the SAME CODE from the executable gives you the correct output. • How to design a high-level application protocol for metadata syncing between devices and server?

  I am looking for guidance on how to best think about designing a high-level application protocol to sync metadata between end-user devices and a server. My goal: the user can interact with the application data on any device, or on the web. The purpose of this protocol is to communicate changes made on one endpoint to other endpoints through the server, and ensure all devices maintain a consistent picture of the application data. If user makes changes on one device or on the web, the protocol will push data to the central repository, from where other devices can pull it. Some other design thoughts: I call it "metadata syncing" because the payloads will be quite small, in the form of object IDs and small metadata about those ID-s. When client endpoints retrieve new metadata over this protocol, they will fetch actual object data from an external source based on this metadata. Fetching the "real" object data is out of scope, I'm only talking about metadata syncing here. Using HTTP for transport and JSON for payload container. The question is basically about how to best design the JSON payload schema. I want this to be easy to implement and maintain on the web and across desktop and mobile devices. The best approach feels to be simple timer- or event-based HTTP request/response without any persistent channels. Also, you should not have a PhD to read it, and I want my spec to fit on 2 pages, not 200. Authentication and security are out of scope for this question: assume that the requests are secure and authenticated. The goal is eventual consistency of data on devices, it is not entirely realtime. For example, user can make changes on one device while being offline. When going online again, user would perform "sync" operation to push local changes and retrieve remote changes. Having said that, the protocol should support both of these modes of operation: Starting from scratch on a device, should be able to pull the whole metadata picture "sync as you go". When looking at the data on two devices side by side and making changes, should be easy to push those changes as short individual messages which the other device can receive near-realtime (subject to when it decides to contact server for sync). As a concrete example, you can think of Dropbox (it is not what I'm working on, but it helps to understand the model): on a range of devices, the user can manage a files and folders—move them around, create new ones, remove old ones etc. And in my context the "metadata" would be the file and folder structure, but not the actual file contents. And metadata fields would be something like file/folder name and time of modification (all devices should see the same time of modification). Another example is IMAP. I have not read the protocol, but my goals (minus actual message bodies) are the same. Feels like there are two grand approaches how this is done: transactional messages. Each change in the system is expressed as delta and endpoints communicate with those deltas. Example: DVCS changesets. REST: communicating the object graph as a whole or in part, without worrying so much about the individual atomic changes. What I would like in the answers: Is there anything important I left out above? Constraints, goals? What is some good background reading on this? (I realize this is what many computer science courses talk about at great length and detail... I am hoping to short-circuit it by looking at some crash course or nuggets.) What are some good examples of such protocols that I could model after, or even use out of box? (I mention Dropbox and IMAP above... I should probably read the IMAP RFC.)

• Reuse a facelet in multiple beans

  How do I invoke/access a property of a managed bean when the bean name is known, but is not yet constructed? EDIT1 The context An object consists of a list of properties(values). One property is modified with a custom JSF editor, depending on its type. The list of editors is determined from the object's type, and displayed in a form using custom:include tags. This custom tag is used to dynamically include the editors <custom:include src="#{editor.component}">. The component property points to the location of the JSF editor. In my example some editors(rendered as select boxes) will use the same facelet(dynamicDropdown.xhtml). Every editor has a session scoped managed bean. • How to convert an ORM to its subclass using Hibernate ?

  Hi everybody, For example, I have two classes : Person and Employee (Employee is a subclass of Person). Person : has a lastname and a firstname. Employee : has also a salary. On the client-side, I have a single HTML form where i can fill the person informations (like lastname and firstname). I also have a "switch" between "Person" and "Employee", and if the switch is on Employee I can fill the salary field. On the server-side, Servlets receive informations from the client and use the Hibernate framework to create/update data to/from the database. The mapping i'm using is a single table for persons and employee, with a discriminator. I don't know how to convert a Person in an Employee. I firstly tried to : load the Person p from the database create an empty Employee e object copy values from p into e set the salary value save e into the database But i couldn't, as I also copy the ID, and so Hibernate told me they where two instanciated ORM with the same id. And I can't cast a Person into an Employee directly, as Person is Employee's superclass. There seems to be a dirty way : delete the person, and create an employee with the same informations, but I don't really like it.. • Drawing outlines around organic shapes

  One thing that seems particularly easy to do in the Flash IDE but difficult to do with code is to outline an organic shape. In the IDE you can just use the inkbucket tool to draw a stroke around something. Using nothing but code it seems much trickier. One method I've seen is to add a glow filter to the shape in question and just mess with the strength. But what if i want to only show the outline? What I'd like to do is to collect all of the points that make up the edge of the shape and then just connect the dots. I've actually gotten so far as to collect all of the points with a quick and dirty edge detection script that I wrote. So now I have a Vector of all the points that makeup my shape. How do I connect them in the proper sequence so it actually looks like the original object?
