• DIVIDE vs division operator in #dax

  Alberto Ferrari wrote an interesting article about DIVIDE performance in DAX. This new function has been introduced in SQL Server Analysis Services 2012 SP1, so it is available also in Excel 2013 (which still doesn’t have other features/fixes introduced by following Cumulative Updates…). The idea that instead of writing: IF ( Sales[Quantity] <> 0, Sales[Amount] / Sales[Quantity], BLANK () ) you can write: DIVIDE ( Sales[Amount], Sales[Quantity] ) There is a third optional argument in DIVIDE that defines the result in case the denominator (second argument) is zero, and by default its value is BLANK, so I omitted the third argument in my example. Using DIVIDE is very important, especially when you use a measure in MDX (for example in an Excel PivotTable) because it raise the chance that the non empty evaluation for the result is evaluated in bulk mode instead of cell-by-cell. However, from a DAX point of view, you might find it’s better to use the standard division operator removing the IF statement. I suggest you to read Alberto’s article, because you will find that an expression applying a filter using FILTER is faster than using CALCULATE, which is against any rule of thumb you might have read until now! Again, this is not always true, and depends on many conditions – trying to simplify, we might say that for a simple calculation, the query plan generated by FILTER could be more efficient – but, as usual, it depends, and 90% of the times using FILTER instead of CALCULATE produces slower performance. Do not take anything for granted, and always check the query plan when performance are your first issue!

• Introduction to LinqPad Driver for StreamInsight 2.1

  We are announcing the availability of the LinqPad driver for StreamInsight 2.1. The purpose of this blog post is to offer a quick introduction into the new features that we added to the StreamInsight LinqPad driver. We’ll show you how to connect to a remote server, how to inspect the entities present of that server, how to compose on top of them and how to manage their lifetime. Installing the driver Info on how to install the driver can be found in an earlier blog post here. Establishing connections As you click on the “Add Connection” link in the left pane you will notice that now it’s possible to build the data context automatically. The new driver appears as an option in the upper list, and if you pick it you will open a connection dialog that lets you connect to a remote StreamInsight server. The connection dialog lets you specify the address of the remote server. You will notice that it’s possible to pick up the binding information from the configuration file of the LinqPad application (which is normally in the same folder as LinqPad.exe and is called LinqPad.exe.config). In order for the context to be generated you need to pick an application from the server. The control is editable hence you can create a new application if you don’t want to make changes to an existing application. If you choose a new application name you will be prompted for confirmation before this gets created. Once you click OK the connection is created and you can start issuing queries against the remote server. If there’s any connectivity error the connection is marked with a red X and you can see the error message informing you what went wrong (i.e., the remote server could not be reached etc.). The context for remote servers Let’s take a look at what happens after we are connected successfully. Every LinqPad query runs inside a context – think of it as a class that wraps all the code that you’re writing. If you’re connecting to a live server the context will contain the following: The application object itself. All entities present in this application (sources, sinks, subjects and processes). The picture below shows a snapshot of the left pane of LinqPad after a successful connection. Every entity on the server has a different icon which will allow users to figure out its purpose. You will also notice that some entities have a string in parentheses following the name. It should be interpreted as such: the first name is the name of the property of the context class and the second name is the name of the entity as it exists on the server. Not all valid entity names are valid identifier names so in cases where we had to make a transformation you see both. Note also that as you hover over the entities you get IntelliSense with their types – more on that later. Remoting is not supported As you play with the entities exposed by the context you will notice that you can’t read and write directly to/from them. If for instance you’re trying to dump the content of an entity you will get an error message telling you that in the current version remoting is not supported. This is because the entity lives on the remote server and dumping its content means reading the events produced by this entity into the local process. ObservableSource.Dump(); Will yield the following error: Reading from a remote 'System.Reactive.Linq.IQbservable`1[System.Int32]' is not supported. Use the 'Microsoft.ComplexEventProcessing.Linq.RemoteProvider.Bind' method to read from the source using a remote observer. This basically tells you that you can call the Bind() method to direct the output of this source to a sink that has to be defined on the remote machine as well. You can’t bring the results to the LinqPad window unless you write code specifically for that. Compose queries You may ask – what's the purpose of all that? After all the same information is present in the EventFlowDebugger, why bother with showing it in LinqPad? First of all, What gets exposed in LinqPad is not what you see in the debugger. In LinqPad we have a property on the context class for every entity that lives on the server. Because LinqPad offers IntelliSense we in fact have much more information about the entity, and more importantly we can compose with that entity very easily. For example, let’s say that this code creates an entity: using (var server = Server.Connect(...)) {     var a = server.CreateApplication("WhiteFish");     var src = a         .DefineObservable<int>(() => Observable.Range(0, 3))         .Deploy("ObservableSource"); If later we want to compose with the source we have to fetch it and then we can bind something to     a.GetObservable<int>("ObservableSource)").Bind(... This means that we had to know a bunch of things about this: that it’s a source, that it’s an observable, it produces a result with payload Int32 and it’s named “ObservableSource”. Only the second and last bits of information are present in the debugger, by the way. As you type in the query window you see that all the entities are present, you get IntelliSense support for them and it’s much easier to make sense of what’s available. Let’s look at a scenario where composition is plausible. With the new programming model it’s possible to create “cold” sources that are parameterized. There was a way to accomplish that even in the previous version by passing parameters to the adapters, but this time it’s much more elegant because the expression declares what parameters are required. Say that we hover the mouse over the ThrottledSource source – we will see that its type is Func<int, int, IQbservable<int>> - this in effect means that we need to pass two int parameters before we can get a source that produces events, and the type for those events is int – in the particular case of my example I had the source produce a range of integers and the two parameters were the start and end of the range. So we see how a developer can create a source that is not running yet. Then someone else (e.g. an administrator) can pass whatever parameters appropriate and run the process. Proxy Types Here’s an interesting scenario – what if someone created a source on a server but they forgot to tell you what type they used. Worse yet, they might have used an anonymous type and even though they can refer to it by name you can’t figure out how to use that type. Let’s walk through an example that shows how you can compose against types you don’t need to have the definition of. This is how we can create a source that returns an anonymous type: Application.DefineObservable(() => Observable.Range(1, 10).Select(i => new { I = i })).Deploy("O1"); Now if we refresh the connection we can see the new source named O1 appear in the list. But what’s more important is that we now have a type to work with. So we can compose a query that refers to the anonymous type. var threshold = new StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0<int>(5); var filter = from i in O1              where i > threshold              select i; filter.Deploy("O2"); You will notice that the anonymous type defined with this statement: new { I = i } can now be manipulated by a client that does not have access to it because the LinqPad driver has generated another type in its stead, named StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0. This type has all the properties and fields of the type defined on the server, except in this case we can instantiate values and use it to compose more queries. It is worth noting that the same thing works for types that are not anonymous – the test is if the LinqPad driver can resolve the type or not. If it’s not possible then a new type will be generated that approximates the type that exists on the server. Control metadata In addition to composing processes on top of the existing entities we can do other useful things. We can delete them – nothing new here as we simply access the entities through the Entities collection of the application class. Here is where having their real name in parentheses comes handy. There’s another way to find out what’s behind a property – dump its expression. The first line in the output tells us what’s the name of the entity used to build this property in the context. Runtime information So let’s create a process to see what happens. We can bind a source to a sink and run the resulting process. If you right click on the connection you can refresh it and see the process present in the list of entities. Then you can drag the process to the query window and see that you can have access to process object in the Processes collection of the application. • Microsoft Silverlight Analytics Framework - Day 2 Part 2 of MIX 2010

  I went to the session on Microsoft Silverlight Analytics Framework (MSAF) today while here at MIX 2010.  It was a great walk through the features, ideas, and what the end goal is.  Michael Scherotter did a great job of lining up the ideas, intentions, and the functional ideas behind the framework. The framework is built around the Silverlight Behaviors.  If you aren't sure what behaviors are, check out these entries from Nikhilk.net Silverlight Behaviors, Silverlight 3 Drag Behavior, An Introduction to Behaviors, Triggers, and Actions, and of course the MSDN Documentation on the matter. Some of the key features of the framework is to support out-of-browser scenarios, which works perfectly with out Webtrends DX Web Services.  Offline scenarios, which again, we have worked toward supporting at Webtrends DC Web Services via caching and other criteria as needed.  Another feature that I was really stoked about is the Microsoft Expression Blend integration that removes the need for coding, thus simplifying the addition of analytics components based on events or other actions within a Silverlight Application.  This framework also easily supports A/B Testing (again, something we do quit a bit of at Webtrends with Webtrends Optimize. The last thing I really wanted to point out was the control support that this framework has support in already from Telerik RadControls, Smooth Streaming Media Element, and Microsoft Silverlight Media Framework Player 1.0.  These are implemented with behaviors and handlers exposed via MEF (Managed Extensibility Framework). All in all, great second day, great analytics framework for Silverlight, and great presentation.  Until tomorrow, adieu. • Acer Aspire One 725 - missing graphic card driver?

  Recently I bought an Acer Aspire One 725 Netbook and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it. I bought it, because it can run HD movies and has Full HD on external VGA port. However, movies from youtube have a really slow framerate. If you open three tabs in Opera (for example g-mail, youtube and askubuntu) it gets really laggy. My suspicion is that the driver for graphic card is missing. When I check the System->Details->Graphics the driver is unknown. After running lspci | grep VGA I get this output: 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 980a From what I see, I have a AMD C70 processor integrated with (or something similar) AMD Radeon HD 6290. Has anyone had the same problem? Do you know which drivers need to be installed for the graphics to work properly? On official Acer page there are only drivers for Win7 and Win8... • Introduction to LinqPad Driver for StreamInsight 2.1

  We are announcing the availability of the LinqPad driver for StreamInsight 2.1. The purpose of this blog post is to offer a quick introduction into the new features that we added to the StreamInsight LinqPad driver. We’ll show you how to connect to a remote server, how to inspect the entities present of that server, how to compose on top of them and how to manage their lifetime. Installing the driver Info on how to install the driver can be found in an earlier blog post here. Establishing connections As you click on the “Add Connection” link in the left pane you will notice that now it’s possible to build the data context automatically. The new driver appears as an option in the upper list, and if you pick it you will open a connection dialog that lets you connect to a remote StreamInsight server. The connection dialog lets you specify the address of the remote server. You will notice that it’s possible to pick up the binding information from the configuration file of the LinqPad application (which is normally in the same folder as LinqPad.exe and is called LinqPad.exe.config). In order for the context to be generated you need to pick an application from the server. The control is editable hence you can create a new application if you don’t want to make changes to an existing application. If you choose a new application name you will be prompted for confirmation before this gets created. Once you click OK the connection is created and you can start issuing queries against the remote server. If there’s any connectivity error the connection is marked with a red X and you can see the error message informing you what went wrong (i.e., the remote server could not be reached etc.). The context for remote servers Let’s take a look at what happens after we are connected successfully. Every LinqPad query runs inside a context – think of it as a class that wraps all the code that you’re writing. If you’re connecting to a live server the context will contain the following: The application object itself. All entities present in this application (sources, sinks, subjects and processes). The picture below shows a snapshot of the left pane of LinqPad after a successful connection. Every entity on the server has a different icon which will allow users to figure out its purpose. You will also notice that some entities have a string in parentheses following the name. It should be interpreted as such: the first name is the name of the property of the context class and the second name is the name of the entity as it exists on the server. Not all valid entity names are valid identifier names so in cases where we had to make a transformation you see both. Note also that as you hover over the entities you get IntelliSense with their types – more on that later. Remoting is not supported As you play with the entities exposed by the context you will notice that you can’t read and write directly to/from them. If for instance you’re trying to dump the content of an entity you will get an error message telling you that in the current version remoting is not supported. This is because the entity lives on the remote server and dumping its content means reading the events produced by this entity into the local process. ObservableSource.Dump(); Will yield the following error: Reading from a remote 'System.Reactive.Linq.IQbservable`1[System.Int32]' is not supported. Use the 'Microsoft.ComplexEventProcessing.Linq.RemoteProvider.Bind' method to read from the source using a remote observer. This basically tells you that you can call the Bind() method to direct the output of this source to a sink that has to be defined on the remote machine as well. You can’t bring the results to the LinqPad window unless you write code specifically for that. Compose queries You may ask – what's the purpose of all that? After all the same information is present in the EventFlowDebugger, why bother with showing it in LinqPad? First of all, What gets exposed in LinqPad is not what you see in the debugger. In LinqPad we have a property on the context class for every entity that lives on the server. Because LinqPad offers IntelliSense we in fact have much more information about the entity, and more importantly we can compose with that entity very easily. For example, let’s say that this code creates an entity: using (var server = Server.Connect(...)) {     var a = server.CreateApplication("WhiteFish");     var src = a         .DefineObservable<int>(() => Observable.Range(0, 3))         .Deploy("ObservableSource"); If later we want to compose with the source we have to fetch it and then we can bind something to     a.GetObservable<int>("ObservableSource)").Bind(... This means that we had to know a bunch of things about this: that it’s a source, that it’s an observable, it produces a result with payload Int32 and it’s named “ObservableSource”. Only the second and last bits of information are present in the debugger, by the way. As you type in the query window you see that all the entities are present, you get IntelliSense support for them and it’s much easier to make sense of what’s available. Let’s look at a scenario where composition is plausible. With the new programming model it’s possible to create “cold” sources that are parameterized. There was a way to accomplish that even in the previous version by passing parameters to the adapters, but this time it’s much more elegant because the expression declares what parameters are required. Say that we hover the mouse over the ThrottledSource source – we will see that its type is Func<int, int, IQbservable<int>> - this in effect means that we need to pass two int parameters before we can get a source that produces events, and the type for those events is int – in the particular case of my example I had the source produce a range of integers and the two parameters were the start and end of the range. So we see how a developer can create a source that is not running yet. Then someone else (e.g. an administrator) can pass whatever parameters appropriate and run the process. Proxy Types Here’s an interesting scenario – what if someone created a source on a server but they forgot to tell you what type they used. Worse yet, they might have used an anonymous type and even though they can refer to it by name you can’t figure out how to use that type. Let’s walk through an example that shows how you can compose against types you don’t need to have the definition of. This is how we can create a source that returns an anonymous type: Application.DefineObservable(() => Observable.Range(1, 10).Select(i => new { I = i })).Deploy("O1"); Now if we refresh the connection we can see the new source named O1 appear in the list. But what’s more important is that we now have a type to work with. So we can compose a query that refers to the anonymous type. var threshold = new StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0<int>(5); var filter = from i in O1              where i > threshold              select i; filter.Deploy("O2"); You will notice that the anonymous type defined with this statement: new { I = i } can now be manipulated by a client that does not have access to it because the LinqPad driver has generated another type in its stead, named StreamInsightDynamicDriver.TypeProxies.AnonymousType1_0. This type has all the properties and fields of the type defined on the server, except in this case we can instantiate values and use it to compose more queries. It is worth noting that the same thing works for types that are not anonymous – the test is if the LinqPad driver can resolve the type or not. If it’s not possible then a new type will be generated that approximates the type that exists on the server. Control metadata In addition to composing processes on top of the existing entities we can do other useful things. We can delete them – nothing new here as we simply access the entities through the Entities collection of the application class. Here is where having their real name in parentheses comes handy. There’s another way to find out what’s behind a property – dump its expression. The first line in the output tells us what’s the name of the entity used to build this property in the context. Runtime information So let’s create a process to see what happens. We can bind a source to a sink and run the resulting process. If you right click on the connection you can refresh it and see the process present in the list of entities. Then you can drag the process to the query window and see that you can have access to process object in the Processes collection of the application. • case-specific mod rewrite on Wordpress subdomain multisite

  I have split a Wordpress blog into multiple category-specific blogs using subdomains, as the topics in the original blog were too broad to be lumped together effectively. Posts were exported from the parent www blog and imported into the subject-specific subdomain blogs. I believe .htaccess provides mod rewrite for all subdomains (including the original www) in a single .htaccess file. I use .htaccess to perform 301 redirect on post categories to the relevant post on the subdomain's blog. eg: RedirectMatch 301 ^/auto/(.*)$ http://auto.example.com/$1 The problem I have is that the category has been retained in the permalink structure in the subdomain blog, so that www.example.com/auto/mercedes is now auto.example.com/auto/mercedes. The 1st URL is redirect to the 2nd, but unfortunately, the 2nd URL is redirected to auto.example.com/mercedes using the same rewrite rule, which is not found, as the permalink on the subdomain's blog retains the parent category of auto. The solution would be to adjust the permalink structure in the subdomain's WP settings, so that the top level category does not duplicate the subdomain. My question would be: how do I then strip a section of the original (www) blog's post URL from the subdomain's URL when redirecting? eg: How do I redirect www.example.com/auto/mercedes to auto.example.com/mercedes? I'm assuming this would be a regular expression trick, which I am not great at. Update: I might have to use: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !auto.example.com$ in the default Wordpress if loop in .htaccess, and seperate my custom subdomain redirections into a second if loop section.

  This function will download and install ,NET 4.0. It uses the Get-Framework-Versions function to determine if the installation is necessary or not. Internet Connectivity will be required as the script auto downloads the setup file (and sleeps for 360 seconds... I had a function in there to monitor for install completion at first, turns out the setup file spawns so many childprocesses the function just got confused and locked up -_-)Alternatively you could drop the installation file in the folder specified on the $folderPath variable too. That will skip the download and use the file. This function easily adapts in to other versions f.e. • Formatting: Group Multiline Alignment - Added

  One week ago I have added two new properties for formating PHP code into NetBeans 7.1. In Alignment category there are new properties for Group Multiline Alignment - Assignment and Array Initializer.  The Assignment property influence position of the char '=' in a group of lines with assignments.  Let see the pictures below.  On the left site -  Assignment property is off and on the right site the property is on. As you can see, when the property is set on, then the assignment char '=' is placed after the longest identifier in a group. The group is defined as a number of lines that contains the same type of assignments. End of a group can be empty line, line where is only a comment, different expression, end of a block. This formatting options works for variable assignment, field initialization and constants.  The second new property is for Array Initializer.   Both properties are switched off by default.   A new article, the first of two parts, now up on otn/java by Oracle Evangelist and JavaFX expert, James L. Weaver, titled “Expressing the UI for Enterprise Applications with JavaFX 2.0 FXML, Part One,” shows developers how to leverage the power of the FX Markup Language (FXML) to define the UI in enterprise applications.As Weaver explains, “JavaFX 2.0 is an API and runtime for creating Rich Internet Applications (RIAs). JavaFX was introduced in 2007, and version 2.0 was released in October 2011. One of the advantages of JavaFX 2.0 is that the code can be written in the Java language using mature and familiar tools.”He goes on to show how to use the potential of FX Markup Language, which comes with JavaFX 2.0, to efficiently define the user interface for enterprise applications.   A few days ago I published a new article on DAX Patterns web site describing how to implement Basket Analysis in DAX. This topic is a very classical one and is also covered in the many-to-many revolution white paper. It has been also discussed in several blog posts, listed here in historical order: Simple Basket Analysis in DAX by Chris Webb PowerPivot, basket analysis and the hidden many to many by Alberto Ferrari Applied Basket Analysis in Power Pivot using DAX by Gerhard Brueckl As usual, in DAX Patterns we try to present the required DAX formulas in a way that is easy to adapt to specific models. We also try to show a good implementation from a performance point of view. Further optimizations are always possible in DAX. However, in order to keep the model simple to adapt in different scenarios, we avoid presenting optimizations that would require particular assumptions or restrictions on the data model. I hope you will find the Basket Analysis pattern useful. Even if you do not need it today, reading the DAX formula is a good exercise to check your knowledge of evaluation contexts in DAX. For example, describing how does it work the following expression is not a trivial task! • Be careful when installing the Blend Windows Phone 7 Add-In

  There was a small issue today with the release of the Windows Phone Developer Tools CTP (April 2010 Refresh) refresh. The issue is that the Expression Blend Add-in Preview for Windows Phone (April Refresh) is not compatible with Blend 4.0.20408.0, which was the public RC (release candidate). A few days ago, the Blend team released a fix for an issue that was sometimes causing a crash when Blend was starting up. This new release (V4.0.20421.0) was not very well announced however, and many people (including me) did not install it. After all, Blend did not crash at startup of either of my machines, so I didn’t deem necessary to install yet a new RC. However, it is now clear that the Windows Phone 7 Add-In needs this latest-and-greatest version to work. If you have Blend 4.0.20408.0, you won’t be able to work with Windows Phone 7 in Blend. To add to the confusion, the page where you can download V4.0.20421.0 from has an error, and the wrong version number is wrong (at least at the time of writing). Do not let this confuse you. You must download this version and install it. Hopefully this helps clarify some of the confusion… Happy WinPhone7 coding :) Laurent

  Java EE 7 has been filed as JSR 342 in the JCP program. This JSR (Java Specification Request) will develop Java EE 7, the next version of the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition. It is an "umbrella JSR" because the specification includes a collection of several other JSRs. The proposal suggests the addition of two new JSRs: Concurrency Utilities for Java EE (JSR-236) and JCache (JSR-107) as well as updates to JPA, JAX-RS, JSF, Servlets, EJB, JSP, EL, JMS, JAX-WS, CDI, Bean Validation, JSR-330, JSR-250, and Java Connector Architecture. There are also two new APIs under discussion: a Java Web Sockets API and a Java JSON API. These are the new JSRs that are currently up for ballot:• JSR 342: Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 7 Specification• JSR 340: Java Servlet 3.1 Specification• JSR 341: Expression Language 3.0• JSR 343: Java Message Service 2.0• JSR 344: JavaServer Faces 2.2All 5 JSRs are now up for Executive Committee voting with ballots closing on 14 March, and slated for inclusion in Java EE  7.  All of these JSRs are also open for Expert Group nominations.   Today, I had a hard time unit testing a function to make sure a Method with some array parameters was called. Method to be called : void AddUsersToRoles(string[] usernames, string[] roleNames);   I had previously used Arg<T>.Matches on complex types in other unit tests, but for some reason I was unable to find out how to apply the same logic with an array of strings.   It is actually quite simple to do, T really is a string[], so we use Arg<string[]>. • Why is sudo bash different from regular bash

  Problem description : I am using something called play framework in my development which requires me to make the python script play available in the path. Hence I create a symbolic link in /usr/local/bin ... Now I have written a shell script (call it status.sh) which calls this python script as follows : play status <some values here related to my app> &> /tmp/xyz.txt and this shell script then sends me the file via email. This works perfectly when I execute the script as follows ./script.sh. However when the script is executed as a cron expression everyday I get an output from stderr saying 'play: command not found'. Hence I did some digging on my own and here are my findings : echo $PATH when I am on the shell shows that I have /usr/local/bin available to me hence I can successfully execute the command play status however when I type in sudo bash and then echo $PATH I do not have the path /usr/local/bin anymore. It is a limited set of folders (one of them being /usr/bin). Q : Why this behavior ?! I fail to understand why the path is different. Also as a workaround would you suggest I do : new symbolic link from /usr/bin to /usr/local/bin (what are the side effects of this?) remove /usr/local/bin sym link altogether and only use /usr/bin is there a convention that I am not following here for linking new programs and executing them from $PATH ? Thanks.

  I’m a big fan of LINQ and use it wherever I can to minimize code and make applications easier to maintain overall. I was going through a code file today refactoring it based on suggestions provided by Resharper and came across the following method: private List<string> FilterTokens(List<string> tokens) { var cleanedTokens = new List<string>(); for (int i = 0; i < tokens.Count; i++) { string token = tokens[i]; if (token != null) { cleanedTokens.Add(token); } } return cleanedTokens; }   In looking through the code I didn’t see anything wrong but Resharper was suggesting that I convert it to a LINQ expression: In thinking about it more the suggestion made complete sense because I simply wanted to add all non-null token values into a List<string> anyway. After following through with the Resharper suggestion the code changed to the following. Much, much cleaner and yet another example of why LINQ (and Resharper) rules: private List<string> FilterTokens(IEnumerable<string> tokens) { return tokens.Where(token => token != null).ToList(); }

  Let us take scenario where in users wants to persist master child relationship. Here will have two tables dept, emp (using Scott Schema) which are having master child relation.Model Diagram: Here in the above model diagram, Dept is the Master table and Emp is child table and Dept is related to emp by one to n relationship. Lets assume we need to make new entries in emp table using EJB persist method. Create a Emp form manually dropping the fields, where deptno will be dropped as Single Selection -> ADF Select One Choice (which is a foreign key in emp table) from deptFindAll DC. Make sure to bind all field variables in backing bean.Employee Form:Once the Emp form created, If the persistEmp() method is used to commit the record this will persist all the Emp fields into emp table except deptno, because the deptno will be passed as a Object reference in persistEmp method  (Its foreign key reference). • MDX needs a function or macro syntax

  I was having an interesting discussion with a few people about the impact of named sets on performance (the same discussion noted by Chris Webb here: http://cwebbbi.wordpress.com/2011/03/16/referencing-named-sets-in-calculations). And apparently the core of the performance issue comes down to the way named sets are materialized within the SSAS engine. Which lead me to the thought that what we really need is a syntax for declaring a non-materialized set or to take this even further a way of declaring an MDX expression as function or macro so that it can be re-used in multiple places. Because sometimes you do want the set materialised, such as when you use an ordered set for calculating rankings. But a lot of the time we just want to make our MDX modular and want to avoid having to repeat the same code over and over. • Would it be a good idea to work on letting people add arrays of numbers in javascript?

  I am a very mathematically oriented programmer, and I happen to be doing a lot of java script these days. I am really disappointed in the math aspects of javascript: the Math object is almost a joke because it has so few methods you can't use ^ for exponentiation the + operator is very limited, you cant add array's of numbers or do scalar multiplication on arrays Now I have written some pretty basic extensions to the Math object and have considered writing a library of advanced Math features, amazingly there doesn't seem to be any sort of standard library already out even for calculus, although there is one for vectors and matricies I was able find. The notation for working with vectors and matricies is really bad when you can't use the + operator on arrays, and you cant do scalar multiplication. For example, here is a hideous expression for subtracting two vectors, A - B: Math.vectorAddition(A,Math.scalarMultiplication(-1,B)); I have been looking for some kind of open-source project to contribute to for awhile, and even though my C++ is a bit rusty I would very much like to get into the code for V8 engine and extend the + operator to work on arrays, to get scalar multiplication to work, and possibly to get the ^ operator to work for exponentiation. These things would greatly enhance the utility of any mathematical javascript framework. I really don't know how to get involved in something like the V8 engine other than download the code and start working on it. Of course I'm afraid that since V8 is chrome specific, that without browser cross-compatibility a fundamental change of this type is likely to be rejected for V8. I was hoping someone could either tell me why this is a bad idea, or else give me some pointers about how to proceed at this point to get some kind of approval to add these features. Thanks!
