  • How to allow users to transfer files to other users on linux

    - by Jon Bringhurst
We have an environment of a few thousand users running applications on about 40 clusters ranging in size from 20 compute nodes to 98,000 compute nodes. Users on these systems generate massive files (sometimes 1PB) controlled by traditional unix permissions (ACLs usually aren't available or practical due to the specialized nature of the filesystem). We currently have a program called "give", which is a suid-root program that allows a user to "give" a file to another user when group permissions are insufficient. So, a user would type something like the following to give a file to another user: > give username-to-give-to filename-to-give ... The receiving user can then use a command called "take" (part of the give program) to receive the file: > take filename-to-receive The permissions of the file are then effectively transferred over to the receiving user. This program has been around for years and we'd like to revisit things from a security and functional point of view. Our current plan of action is to remove the bit rot in our current implementation of "give" and package it up as an open source app before we redeploy it into production. Does anyone have another method they use to transfer extremely large files between users when only traditional unix permissions are available?

  • Multi users windows login?

    - by DennyHalim.com
I need a way to login multiple users into windows at startup, in (XP/Vista/7) I need for each time windows starts, all registered users will automatically login and starts all apps in their startup folder under their own credentials. Any ideas how I could achieve this? i need a 'cheap' alternative to windows vps. lots of people need vps to run certain apps and leave it running. it's less likely they need full admin access other than installing those apps. instead of each users have their own vps running simple apps, it might be cheaper to have one multi-user server to accomplish this?

  • How to use robocopy to move Users folder from partition c to d on Windows 7?

    - by Bastian
I just tried to copy my Users folder from partition C to partition D using the method mentioned in this post. Unfortunately I encountered two problems: When using the command robocopy c:\Users d:\Users /mir /xj /copyall, robocopy says that it can't find the file C:\Users\, although it exists. When using the command robocopy x:\Users d:\Users /mir /xj /copyall, robocopy says that it cannot find the path d:\Users\Administrator\Application Data, error code <0x00000003>. I started the command line mode of my Windows 7 installation disk (repair mode). Does anybody know what the reasons for these errors might be?

  • Dual Use (Mice and Keyboayd) of Windows 7

    - by jmalais
I saw some answers to this question however they were fairly old (at least 2 years) and primarily for Vista or previous Windows OS versions. My question is this: Is there a program that allows a single Windows 7 computer to have multiple users (2 needed) and allow for two mice and two keyboards on two screens. What I'm trying to achieve: I'd like for the ability to play a game on one monitor while another person surfs the web, uses a program, or possibly play a different game. Any ideas?

  • find users that are following other users

    - by Jakob
Hi I'm wondering how I can go about this problem I have a DB with a Users Table, and a Followers table. The Followers table contains 2 Columns "FollowerID" and "FollowedID" I have a 1 - * relation in my datamodel between Users.ID -> Followers.FollowerID and Users.ID -> FollowedID How do I in LINQ get a set of users that are following a specific user? I'll express what I'm trying to achieve programatically I can get this far: ctx.Followers.Where(f => f.FollowedID == CurrentUser.ID) so now i have a Followers set where I have the ID of the users that follow the CurrentUser, and I could iterate through this collection and then add users after each iteration to a collection that would be a total USER collection that followed CurrentUser, but isn't there a smarter, or LINQ'er way to do this? Much appreciated Thx

  • Should users be deleted after inactivity on a website?

    - by Hovaness Bartamian
When you have a social website or a website where you can register, would you eventually delete them after a certain time (after a year of inactivity) or would you rather keep their account records for ever? I know websites like Facebook have large amount of inactive, duplicated and fake accounts. So I'm wondering if after two years of inactivity it would be alright to send the account a warning email of deletion unless they log in. Just thinking of a clean and efficient database management or any implications this may cause to new potential users.

  • Sinatra and XML POST request

    - by user292815
    I don't know is it my mistake or no. So i have that code: <code> post '/singin/get_token' do content_type :xml puts request.body.read puts xmlRequest xmlRequest = REXML::Document.new(request.body.read) ... </code> And when i post something like that: <code> <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?><request xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"><username>adsfasdf</username></request> </code> I receive that in my console: <code> 127.0.0.1 - - [12/Mar/2010 21:18:20] "POST /singin/get_token HTTP/1.1"   • Exception with RubyAMF and Ruby 1.9 although code works

    - by Tam
I'm getting an exception with RubyAMF using Ruby 1.9 and Rails 2.3.5. Although code afterward executes normally I'm not very comfortable with seeing such exception in the log file. Do you know what is causing it: >>>>>>>> RubyAMF >>>>>>>>> #<RubyAMF::Actions::PrepareAction:0x0000010139ff48> took: 0.00020 secs >>>>>>>> RubyAMF >>>>>>>>> #<RubyAMF::Actions::RailsInvokeAction:0x0000010139ff10> took: 0.29973 secs You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! • Dovecot Virtual Users and Users Domain Mapping

    - by Stojko
I have successfully compiled, configured and ran Dovecot with virtual users feature. Here's part of my /etc/dovecot.conf configuration file: mail_location = maildir:/home/%d/%n/Maildir auth default { mechanisms = plain login userdb passwd-file { args = /home/%d/etc/passwd } passdb passwd-file { args = /home/%d/etc/shadow } socket listen { master { path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-worker mode = 0600 } } } I faced one issue I can't resolve myself. Is there anyway to create users' domains mapping and provide username in mail_location? Examples: 1. currently I have /home/domain.com/user/Maildir 2. I'd like to have /home/USER/domain.com/user/Maildir Can I achieve this somehow? Greets, Stojko

  • Multiple "setups" on windows 7

    - by Roberto
I would like to create multiple setups on Windows, that is, when I'm working with my computer I have some programs opened, after that I would like to change the setup/user to the "gaming setup" where the previous setup would hibernate and the computer would have all the resources free for me to play. I could have opened multiple tabs on firefox on each setup and they would be there when I come back. I understand that windows' switch user would make the programs run when I'm with the other user and that's not what I want. So, is that possible?

  • Temporary users table or legitimate users table?

    - by John
I have a freelance web application that lets users register for events. In my database, I have a t_events_applicants table with the column t_events_applications.user_id with a foreign key constraint linked to the t_users.user_id column. So this means only users who have registered with my web application can register for my web application's events. My client would now like to allow non-registered users, users who do not have an entry in my t_user table, to register for events. These non-registered users only need to provide their name and email address to register for events. Should I create a t_temporary_user table with columns name and email and then remove the t_events_applicants.user_id fk constraint? Or should I add un-registered users to the t_user table and then add a column called t_user.type where type can be 'registered' or 'non-registered'? How do I decide which approach to go with? A lot of times, I hesitate with either approach. I ask myself, "What if at a later time, a temporary user is allowed to become a fully registered user? Then maybe I should have only a t_user table. But then I also don't feel good about storing a lot of temporary users in t_user."

  • Enabling Multiple Monitor Support from Terminal Services/Remote Desktop over Citrix

    - by Nicolas Webb
Our Remote Desktop/Terminal Services solution where I work relies on Citrix for machines not connected via the VPN. We're using Citrix Xen server (I'm pretty sure) and I'm going to try to connect to a Windows 7 Host (my work computer) and I think the RDC client runs on a Win2003 host (exposed via Citrix). Is it possible to take advantage of Windows 7 multiple monitor support for RDC with this setup? Would I need to try getting my Citrix guys to have a different host machine for the RDC (Win2008, or Win7?)? I'm probably going to connect using the OS X Citrix client, but I'd be willing to BootCamp/Fusion up a Windows instance to work remotely, as well. I really want to be able to use multiple monitors remotely. It does "span" multiple montiors currently (I have a 3000x1024 desktop, for example) but I'd rather it be "true" multiple monitor instead of one giant desktop, if possible.

  • Root users and mysql: `sudo mysql` vs `/root/.my.cnf`

    - by user67641
I have a /root/.my.cnf file which stores the mysql root user's password: [client] password = "my password" When I log in as system root and enter mysql, I get a passwordless login: myuser@local:$ sudo su root@local:$ mysql mysql> But when I try to do the same just using sudo, I get access denied: myuser@local:$ sudo mysql ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) How can I get sudo mysql to log me in as the mysql root user, without entering a password?

  • Declaring multiple ports for the same VirtualHosts

  • Handling deleted users - separate or same table?

    - by Alan Beats
The scenario is that I've got an expanding set of users, and as time goes by, users will cancel their accounts which we currently mark as 'deleted' (with a flag) in the same table. If users with the same email address (that's how users log in) wish to create a new account, they can signup again, but a NEW account is created. (We have unique ids for every account, so email addresses can be duplicated amongst live and deleted ones). What I've noticed is that all across our system, in the normal course of things we constantly query the users table checking the user is not deleted, whereas what I'm thinking is that we dont need to do that at all...! [Clarification1: by 'constantly querying', I meant that we have queries which are like: '... FROM users WHERE isdeleted="0" AND ...'. For example, we may need to fetch all users registered for all meetings on a particular date, so in THAT query, we also have FROM users WHERE isdeleted="0" - does this make my point clearer?] (1) continue keeping deleted users in the 'main' users table (2) keep deleted users in a separate table (mostly required for historical book-keeping) What are the pros and cons of either approach?

  • Why does switching users completely hang my system every time?

    - by Stéphane
I have a fresh install of 11.04 64bit, with 2 administrator accounts and 4 normal accounts. The 4 normal accounts (the kids' accounts) don't have passwords, they can login simply by clicking on their names. When any of the users -- either admin or normal -- tries to switch to another account by clicking in the top-right corner of the screen and selecting another user, the screen goes black and the entire system locks up. Even CTRL+ALT+F1 through F7 does nothing. This is reproducible 100% of the time on this system. I can ssh into the box when the console locks up, and by running top, I see that Xorg is consuming about 100% of the CPU. Looking at the output of "ps axfu" in bash while the system is in this "locked up" state, here is the lightdm and X process tree: USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 1153 0.0 0.1 183508 4292 ? • WordPress: Display Online Users' Avatars

    - by Wade D Ouellet
Hi, I'm using version 2.7.0 of this WordPress plugin to display which users are currently online (the latest version doesn't work): http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-useronline/ It's working great but I would love to be able to alter it quickly to display the users' avatars instead of their names. Hoping someone with pretty good knowledge of WordPress queries and functions can help. The part below seems to be the part that handles all this. If this isn't enough, here is the link to download the version I am using with the full php files: http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/wp-useronline.2.70.zip // If No Bot Is Found, Then We Check Members And Guests if ( !$bot_found ) { if ( $current_user->ID ) { // Check For Member $user_id = $current_user->ID; $user_name = $current_user->display_name; $user_type = 'member'; $where = $wpdb->prepare("WHERE user_id = %d", $user_id); } elseif ( !empty($_COOKIE['comment_author_'.COOKIEHASH]) ) { // Check For Comment Author (Guest) $user_id = 0; $user_name = trim(strip_tags($_COOKIE['comment_author_'.COOKIEHASH])); $user_type = 'guest'; } else { // Check For Guest $user_id = 0; $user_name = __('Guest', 'wp-useronline'); $user_type = 'guest'; } } // Check For Page Title if ( is_admin() && function_exists('get_admin_page_title') ) { $page_title = ' &raquo; ' . __('Admin', 'wp-useronline') . • Fast user switching is logging users off instead of switching users

    - by Nathan Osman
I have a netbook running Windows 8.1 Pro that will no longer allow more than one user to be logged in at the same time. The steps necessary to reproduce this are as follows: The current user presses WIN to bring up the start screen. The user clicks his name in the corner and a list of other users appears. As soon as one of the other names is clicked, the user is unceremoniously logged off without any prompts. This behavior seems to have started some time after upgrading to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8. Before that point, everything worked fine and more than one user could be logged in at the same time. I've tried searching for others experiencing similar problems but this appears to be unique. • How many users are "many users"?

    - by kemp
I need to find a solution for a website which is struggling under load. The site gets ~500 simultaneous connections during peak time, and counts around 42k hits per day. It's a wordpress based site bridged with a vbulletin forum with a lot of contents and a fairly complex structure which makes intensive use of the database. I already implemented code level full page caching (without this the server just crashes), and configured all other caching directives as well as combining css files and the like to limit http requests as much as possible. I need to understand if there is more that can be done via software or if the load is just too much for the server to handle and it needs to be upgraded, because the server goes down occasionally during peak times. Can't access the server now, but it's a dedicated CentOS machine (I think 4GB ram, can't say what CPU) running apache/mysql. So back to the main question: how can I know when the users are just too many?
