  • Web pages that a long time to load keep on reloading, just on vista on my work n/w...

    I have a curious problem at work which I've been struggling with since the advent of Windows Vista. We send our own email newsletter out to 40,000+ people once a week. The sending code has been in place for years, it's in classic ASP/VBscript called through a browser and simply loops through each email address, sending it to them. The page takes 40 mins or more to run, so has a big timeout value to allow it to do so. All well and good, suddenly, after Windows Vista is installed on the work PCs, the email sending page behaved oddly - after a period of time it seems to reload the page, endlessly, so the first 20% of our users get multiple copies of the newsletter until we kill the process! If we run the code on an XP machine in the on the same office network, it works fine. If we run it on Vista outside the office, so, say, on my own ISP, then it also works fine! Note, same effect in IE and FF... So, something about my office network and Vista is causing this... I recently re-wrote the newsletter code so it would split the task into chunks of 100 users at a time, hoping this would fix it, but my most recent test shows that the office n/w vista machine once again reloads the same page over any over, even though it takes 1/10th of the time to run... Does anyone have any ideas what it might be, how I can prove it, or, better, how I can get round it? Thanks for your advice :)

    This is a very open question, but I think it can be very beneficial for SQL readability. So you have a Java program, and you are trying to call a monster SQL statement from it, with many subqueries and joins. The starting point for my question is a string constant like this: static string MONSTER_STATEMENT = "SELECT " + " fields" + "WHERE "+ " fieldA = (SELECT a FROM TableC) " + "AND fieldB IN (%s)" + "AND fieldC = %d " + "FROM " " tableA INNER JOIN tableB ON ..."; It later gets filled using String.format and executed. What are you tricks for making this kind of stuff readable? Do you separate your inner joins. Do you indent the SQL itself inside the string? Where do you put the comments? Please share all of the tricks in your arsenal.

  • How to display a very long page like dzone.com?

    Hi, If you ever visit dzone.com you'll notice that all the posts appear on 1 page only. When we scroll that page down, older posts will be added to the end of the page (and maybe some posts at the beginning of the page but outside the view port will be removed). My questions are: - how to know if the user scrolls down/up with javascript/jQuery? - how to know if the user is at the top of the page (they click Ctrl + Home)? Thank you.

  • Java: Best approach to have a long list of variables needed all the time without consuming memory?

    I wrote an abstract class to contain all rules of the application because I need them almost everywhere in my application. So most of what it contains is static final variables, something like this: public abstract class appRules { public static final boolean IS_DEV = true; public static final String CLOCK_SHORT_TIME_FORMAT = "something"; public static final String CLOCK_SHORT_DATE_FORMAT = "something else"; public static final String CLOCK_FULL_FORMAT = "other thing"; public static final int USERNAME_MIN = 5; public static final int USERNAME_MAX = 16; // etc. } The class is big and contains LOTS of such variables. My Question: Isn't setting static variables means these variables are floating in memory all the time? Do you suggest insteading of having an abstract class, I have a instantiable class with non-static variables (just public final), so I instantiate the class and use the variables only when I need them. Or is what am I doing is completely wrong approach and you suggest something else?

  • Terminating a long-executing thread and then starting a new one in response to user changing parameters via UI in an applet

    I have an applet which creates music using the JFugue API and plays it for the user. It allows the user to input a music phrase which the piece will be based on, or lets them choose to have a phrase generated randomly. I had been using the following method (successfully) to simply stop and start the music, which runs in a thread using the Player class from JFugue. I generate the music using my classes and user input from the applet GUI...then... private playerThread pthread; private Thread threadPlyr; private Player player; (from variables declaration) public void startMusic(Pattern p) // pattern is a JFugue object which holds the generated music { if (pthread == null) { pthread = new playerThread(); } else { pthread = null; pthread = new playerThread(); } if (threadPlyr == null) { threadPlyr = new Thread(pthread); } else { threadPlyr = null; threadPlyr = new Thread(pthread); } pthread.setPattern(p); threadPlyr.start(); } class playerThread implements Runnable // plays midi using jfugue Player { private Pattern pt; public void setPattern(Pattern p) { pt = p; } @Override public void run() { try { player.play(pt); // takes a couple mins or more to execute resetGUI(); } catch (Exception exception) { } } } And the following to stop music when user presses the stop/start button while Player.isPlaying() is true: public void stopMusic() { threadPlyr.interrupt(); threadPlyr = null; pthread = null; player.stop(); } Now I want to implement a feature which will allow the user to change parameters while the music is playing, create an updated music pattern, and then play THAT pattern. Basically, the idea is to make it simulate "real time" adjustments to the generated music for the user. Well, I have been beating my head against the wall on this for a couple of weeks. I've read all the standard java documentation, researched, read, and searched forums, and I have tried many different ideas, none of which have succeeded. The problem I've run into with all approaches I've tried is that when I start the new thread with the new, updated musical pattern, all the old threads ALSO start, and there is a cacophony of unintelligible noise instead of my desired output. From what I've gathered, the issue seems to be that all the methods I've come across require that the thread is able to periodically check the value of a "flag" variable and then shut itself down from within its "run" block in response to that variable. However, since my thread makes a call that takes several minutes minimum to execute (playing the music), and I need to terminate it WHILE it is executing this, there is really no safe way to do so. So, I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing when it comes to threads, or if perhaps I can accomplish my goal using a totally different approach. Any ideas or guidance is greatly appreciated! From Yuli's introduction: "By wrapping a Linux utility in a script and using an external database table's preprocessor directive, you can launch the utility from within Oracle Database and have the utility's output be inserted into the external table.   • How can I reduce lagging with GUI/GPU stuff -- make Unity run smaller, quicker, faster?

    Finally installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my HP Pavilion 2000. Have all of my apps on and loaded and am happy thus far. ONE ISSUE -- I'm experiencing a small amount of GUI/GPU style lagging when I go to open menus, move windows, etc. What settings can I disable to allow it to run sharply and quickly, even if i t means sacrificing some of the graphics? Have already installed pre-load. Just want the OS to run sharply and quickly with menu refreshes, window moves, etc. I do not mind sacrificing graphics. Somone mentionted to me I have to install video drivers but the two that come up in system settings under drivers it won't let me install. ALSO : I am driving a second 19" monitor -- would that make a difference performance wise as well? Thanks in advance. Chris

  • Would installing debugging symbols help for reporting bugs?

    I'm running a beta version of Ubuntu (12.10) and I've been reporting crashes through apport's automated system. I've glanced at the stacktraces for a couple of the issues and noticed a lot of what look like hex addresses and these: "No symbol table info available." I was wondering if installing the debugging symbols packages from synaptic would provide better information to package maintainers when I report bugs. In other words, would the stacktrace be more useful if I installed those packages? If so, would installing those packages make any (noticeable) performances differences (will my computer run slower)?   • How to fix hibernate / suspend with proprietary nVidia driver?

    Hi, I've just got an Dell Precision M6500 that comes with an nVidia card. Together with Kubunutu 10.10 and the proprietary nvidia driver suspend to disk or RAM does not work. It's allways ending with a running system and a locked screen (i.e. I can just enter my password and everything is as before - it's never sleeping) Can someone please help me to debug this issue? Where should I look for information? None of the log files seem to show an obvious error... Thanks, Chris

  • Wlan connection got lost permanent

    I have a desktop with a fritz usb wlan n tick and tried ubuntu 12.04. installlation is fine and wlan is working, however connection drops permanent. reconnecting manually fixes it but after a few minutes it drops again. it's connected to a vodafone 802 box with wlan n fix set. it seems that it works when i switch off n mode...but i need to test. can someone confirm or is there another solution? i have another machine with 12.04 (hp 625 laptop) running where connection is stable. any help much appreciated. thank chris

That it is a long time associate and friend of the team we have all grown to know and love, I feel much better about the move. Who cares, Chris, you haven't blogged religiously in ages! I know, and its a crime. Blame life, Twitter, my kids, laziness or whatever else you can think of. I always tell myself I am going to make a comeback - - "Don't call it a comeback - I been here for years." But after a few posts I seem to lose my steam. Its hard to explain, hell, I can't explain it.     Mark just announched support for wayland in Ubuntu in future. I was just wondering the following (Hopefully Mark can answer). Obviously this is quite a significant piece of work. When will a version be available to test? Will it be available as a package(s) in the repository or will it be delivered as its own distribution e.g. wayBuntu?
