  • Is Debug.Assert obsolete if you write unit tests?

    - by Justin Pihony
Just like the question asks, is there a need to add Debug.Assert into your code if you are writing unit tests (which has its own assertions)? I could see that this might make the code more obvious without having to go into the tests, however it just seems that you might end up with duplicated asserts. It seems to me that Debug.Assert was helpful before unit-testing became more prevalent, but is now unnecessary. Or, am I not thinking of some use case?

  • Generating Report for NUnit

    - by thangchung
All source codes for this post can be found at my github.Time ago, I received a request that people ask me how they can generate reports of the results of testing using NUnit? In fact, I may never do this. In the little world of my programming, I only care about the test results, red-green-refactoring, and that was it. When I got that question quite a bit unexpected, I knew that I could use NCover to generate reports, but reports of NCover too simple, it did not give us more details on the number of test cases, test methods, ... And I began to see about creating interesting report for NUnit.I was lucky to find an open source here. Its authors call it NUnit2Report, but one disadvantage is it only running on .NET 1.0. Indeed too old compared to the current version 4.0. And I try to download the preview, but I could not run. I had to open its source code and found that it uses XSLT to convert the output of NUnit results from XML to HTML. Nothing really special, because I also knew that after NUnit run output file extension is XML is created. Author only use this file to convert to HTML using XSLT. And I decided to convert it to. NET 4.0, because I will not have to code from scratch. Conversion work made me take some time, but was lucky that I finally have what I want. Thanks Gilles for the this OSS. I will send a mail to thank him for his efforts but put this out for the OSS. Now I will show people how to do it. I used the auto built NAnt and NUnit for running TestCase, and I use Selenium testing framework. After writing three TestCase using Selenium, I ran NUnit, and got the following results: There are 1 fail and 2s success. In the bin directory of this project will have the NUnit output file as shown below: Then I create a build file, and a bat file for easy running (can use PowerShell is here also.) Double click in the bat file to create a report like this:       Finally open the index.html file in the folder to view report. As everyone can see, it is the TestCase and divide very clearly, that I meet the requirements. This is really good. Once again I really thank NUnit2Report from Gilles. People can contact him via the mail address [email protected] or website  http://nunit2report.sourceforge.net. It really is useful to those who promised to QA. Hopefully this post will help anyone really interested in doing reports for NUnit.

  • If your unit test code "smells" does it really matter?

    - by Buttons840
Usually I just throw my unit tests together using copy and paste and all kind of other bad practices. The unit tests usually end up looking quite ugly, they're full of "code smell," but does this really matter? I always tell myself as long as the "real" code is "good" that's all that matters. Plus, unit testing usually requires various "smelly hacks" like stubbing functions. How concerned should I be over poorly designed ("smelly") unit tests?

  • CloudSeeder: CLR Stored Procedures For Creating CPU Pressure

    - by Adam Machanic
Sometimes, in the interest of testing various scenarios that your server might encounter, it's useful to be able to quickly simulate some condition or another. I/O, memory, CPU pressure, and so on. This latter one is something I've been playing with a lot recently. CPU pressure in SQL Server creates all sorts of interesting side-effects , such as exacerbating waits and making various other conditions much easier to reproduce. In order to make this simpler, I've created the attached CLR library. This...(read more)

  • iOS - Unit tests for KVO/delegate codes

    - by ZhangChn
I am going to design a MVC pattern. It could be either designed as a delegate pattern, or a Key-Value-Observing(KVO), to notify the controller about changing models. The project requires certain quality control procedures to conform to those verification documents. My questions: Does delegate pattern fit better for unit testing than KVO? If KVO fits better, would you please suggest some sample codes?

  • Testing Django Inline ModelForms: How to arrange POST data?

    - by unclaimedbaggage
    Hi folks, I have a Django 'add business' view which adds a new business with an inline 'business_contact' form. The form works fine, but I'm wondering how to write up the unit test - specifically, the 'postdata' to send to self.client.post(settings.BUSINESS_ADD_URL, postdata) I've inspected the fields in my browser and tried adding post data with corresponding names, but I still get a 'ManagementForm data is missing or has been tampered with' error when run. Anyone know of any resources for figuring out how to post inline data? Relevant models, views & forms below if it helps. Lotsa thanks. MODEL: class Contact(models.Model): """ Contact details for the representatives of each business """ first_name = models.CharField(max_length=200) surname = models.CharField(max_length=200) business = models.ForeignKey('Business') slug = models.SlugField(max_length=150, unique=True, help_text=settings.SLUG_HELPER_TEXT) created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) updated = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) phone = models.CharField(max_length=100, null=True, blank=True) mobile_phone = models.CharField(max_length=100, null=True, blank=True) email = models.EmailField(null=True) deleted = models.BooleanField(default=False) class Meta: db_table='business_contact' def __unicode__(self): return '%s %s' % (self.first_name, self.surname) @models.permalink def get_absolute_url(self): return('business_contact', (), {'contact_slug': self.slug }) class Business(models.Model): """ The business clients who you are selling products/services to """ business = models.CharField(max_length=255, unique=True) slug = models.SlugField(max_length=100, unique=True, help_text=settings.SLUG_HELPER_TEXT) description = models.TextField(null=True, blank=True) primary_contact = models.ForeignKey('Contact', null=True, blank=True, related_name='primary_contact') business_type = models.ForeignKey('BusinessType') deleted = models.BooleanField(default=False) created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) updated = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) address_1 = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) address_2 = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) suburb = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) city = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) state = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) country = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) phone = models.CharField(max_length=40, null=True, blank=True) website = models.URLField(null=True, blank=True) class Meta: db_table = 'business' def __unicode__(self): return self.business def get_absolute_url(self): return '%s%s/' % (settings.BUSINESS_URL, self.slug) VIEWS: class Contact(models.Model): """ Contact details for the representatives of each business """ first_name = models.CharField(max_length=200) surname = models.CharField(max_length=200) business = models.ForeignKey('Business') slug = models.SlugField(max_length=150, unique=True, help_text=settings.SLUG_HELPER_TEXT) created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) updated = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) phone = models.CharField(max_length=100, null=True, blank=True) mobile_phone = models.CharField(max_length=100, null=True, blank=True) email = models.EmailField(null=True) deleted = models.BooleanField(default=False) class Meta: db_table='business_contact' def __unicode__(self): return '%s %s' % (self.first_name, self.surname) @models.permalink def get_absolute_url(self): return('business_contact', (), {'contact_slug': self.slug }) class Business(models.Model): """ The business clients who you are selling products/services to """ business = models.CharField(max_length=255, unique=True) slug = models.SlugField(max_length=100, unique=True, help_text=settings.SLUG_HELPER_TEXT) description = models.TextField(null=True, blank=True) primary_contact = models.ForeignKey('Contact', null=True, blank=True, related_name='primary_contact') business_type = models.ForeignKey('BusinessType') deleted = models.BooleanField(default=False) created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) updated = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) address_1 = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) address_2 = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) suburb = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) city = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) state = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) country = models.CharField(max_length=255, null=True, blank=True) phone = models.CharField(max_length=40, null=True, blank=True) website = models.URLField(null=True, blank=True) class Meta: db_table = 'business' def __unicode__(self): return self.business def get_absolute_url(self): return '%s%s/' % (settings.BUSINESS_URL, self.slug) FORMS: class AddBusinessForm(ModelForm): class Meta: model = Business exclude = ['deleted','primary_contact',] class ContactForm(ModelForm): class Meta: model = Contact exclude = ['deleted',] AddBusinessFormSet = inlineformset_factory(Business, Contact, can_delete=False, extra=1, form=AddBusinessForm, )

  • GWT: Best practice for unit testing / mocking JSNI methods?

    - by Epaga
I have a class which uses JSNI to retrieve JSON data stored in the host page: protected native JsArray<JsonModel> getModels() /*-{ return $wnd.jsonData; }-*/; This method is called, and the data is then translated and process in a different method. How should I unit test this class, since I'm not able to instantiate (or seemingly mock?) JsArray? What is the best way to unit test JSNI methods at all?

  • Using reflection to change static final File.separatorChar for unit testing?

    - by Stefan Kendall
Specifically, I'm trying to create a unit test for a method which requires uses File.separatorChar to build paths on windows and unix. The code must run on both platforms, and yet I get errors with JUnit when I attempt to change this static final field. Anyone have any idea what's going on? Field field = java.io.File.class.getDeclaredField( "separatorChar" ); field.setAccessible(true); field.setChar(java.io.File.class,'/'); When I do this, I get IllegalAccessException: Can not set static final char field java.io.File.separatorChar to java.lang.Character Thoughts?

  • iPhone UI addSubview causing concurrency exception

    - by Eli
This is really odd... I run my app, and while it is opening and the views are constructing I get: Collection <CALayerArray: 0x124650> was mutated while being enumerated. The code trace goes through the following: main UIApplicationMain -[UIApplication _run] CFRunLoopRunInMode CFRunLoopRunSpecific _UIApplicationHandleEvent -[UIApplication sendEvent:] -[UIApplication handleEvent:withNewEvent:] -[UIApplication _runWithURL:sourceBundleID:] -[UIApplication _performInitilizationWithURL:sourceBundleID:] -[AppDelegate applicationDidFinishLaunching:] +[Controller initializeController] //This is my own function [window addSubview: pauseMenuController.view] //This is the last point of my code it goes through -[UIView(Hierarchy) addSubview:] -[UIView(Internal) _addSubview:positioned:relativeTo:] -[UIView(Hierarchy) _makeSubtreePerformSelector:withObject:] -[UIView(Hierarchy) _makeSubtreePerformSelector:withObject:withObject:copySublayers:] -[UIView(Hierarchy) _makeSubtreePerformSelector:withObject:withObject:copySublayers:] _NSFastEnumerationMutationHandler objc_exception_throw I've run the game lots and lots and lots of times and I've never seen this, then suddenly it popped up. The weird thing is that I'm not creating any other threads (that I know of) until after this code all gets called. It'll be easier for me to debug this if someone can give me some explanation of what might be getting modified while it's being accessed in a UIView. Does it have something to do with adding something to the view while it's already adding something, maybe? Any ideas?

  • MonoRail: Testing, Route Extensions, Folder Structures

    - by Kezzer
I've got a few questions related to the use of MonoRail Testing Does everyone tend to use NUnit for their testing? I haven't worked enough with testing to know if this is a good testing framework to use. I'm just looking to get more into testing my applications a lot more than before and wanted to know if there's any general guidelines. Are you supposed to copy the controller over to a test area and just rename it with test in the name and re-run it? How do you ensure your test project and main project coincide with one another? Is it just a case of copying everything over again or are there tools available to do it for you? Route Extensions MonoRail tends to use <action>.rails, can you omit the .rails part if you configure your routing correctly? Why does this seem to be the standard? Folder Structures I haven't found anywhere which really points out your standard folder structure. Sure, you have Controllers, Models, and Views. But your Models folder should contain your data access objects as well. I've seen some have something like -> Models -> DaoClasses -> Entities But what about custom structures used to get data out of views? And if you're using NHibernate, where's a good place to stick the mappings? I know it's entirely dependent on the developer, but I haven't really seen any standard approach. Cheers

  • Concurrency Problem in Java ...

    - by Tara Singh
I am designing a client-server chat application in Java. This is a secure application where the messages are exchanged using cryptographic algorithms. I have one server and it can support many clients. My problem is that when one client logs on the server it works fine, but when another user logs into the system, the server starts giving me bad padding exceptions for the encrypted text. I am not able to figure out the problem, according to my logic, when new connection request to server is made, the server creates a thread for listening to the client. Is it possible that once the instance of thread class is created, it does all the processing correctly for the first client, but not for the second client because the variables in server listener thread class already have some previous value, and thus the encrypted text is not decrypted properly? Please advise how I can make this process more robust so that the number of clients does not affect how well the server functions.

  • Junit (3.8.1) testing that an exception is thrown (works in unit test, fails when added to a testSui

    - by Mike Cargal
I'm trying to test that I'm throwing an exception when appropriate. In my test class I have a method similar to the following: public void testParseException() { try { ClientEntitySingleton.getInstance(); fail("should have thrown exception."); } catch (RuntimeException re) { assertEquals( "<exception message>", re.getMessage()); } } This works fine (green bar) whenever I run that single unitTest class. However, when I add that test to a testSuite, I get a red bar Unit test failure reported on the exception. One more thing... it works in the testSuite, if it's the first test in the suite. Actually, I'm doing two of these tests and just figured out that if I make them the first two tests in the suite, all is good, but I get this failure if a "regular" test precedes it. So I have a work-around, but no real answer. Any ideas? Heres'a stack trace of the "failure" java.lang.RuntimeException: ProcEntity client dn="Xxxxxx/Xxxx/XXX" is defined multiple times. at com.someco.someprod.clientEntityManagement.ClientEntitySingleton.addClientEntity(ClientEntitySingleton.java:247) at com.someco.someprod.clientEntityManagement.ClientEntitySingleton.startElement(ClientEntitySingleton.java:264) at org.apache.xerces.parsers.AbstractSAXParser.startElement(Unknown Source) at org.apache.xerces.impl.XMLDocumentFragmentScannerImpl.scanStartElement(Unknown Source) at org.apache.xerces.impl.XMLDocumentFragmentScannerImpl$FragmentContentDispatcher.dispatch(Unknown Source) at org.apache.xerces.impl.XMLDocumentFragmentScannerImpl.scanDocument(Unknown Source) at org.apache.xerces.parsers.XML11Configuration.parse(Unknown Source) at org.apache.xerces.parsers.XML11Configuration.parse(Unknown Source) at org.apache.xerces.parsers.XMLParser.parse(Unknown Source) at org.apache.xerces.parsers.AbstractSAXParser.parse(Unknown Source) at com.someco.someprod.clientEntityManagement.ClientEntitySingleton.parse(ClientEntitySingleton.java:216) at com.someco.someprod.clientEntityManagement.ClientEntitySingleton.reload(ClientEntitySingleton.java:303) at com.someco.someprod.clientEntityManagement.ClientEntitySingleton.setInputSourceProvider(ClientEntitySingleton.java:88) at com.someco.someprod.clientEntityManagement.test.TestClientBase.setUp(TestClientBase.java:17) at com.someco.someprod.clientEntityManagement.test.TestClientEntityDup.setUp(TestClientEntityDup.java:8) at junit.framework.TestCase.runBare(TestCase.java:125) at junit.framework.TestResult$1.protect(TestResult.java:106) at junit.framework.TestResult.runProtected(TestResult.java:124) at junit.framework.TestResult.run(TestResult.java:109) at junit.framework.TestCase.run(TestCase.java:118) at junit.framework.TestSuite.runTest(TestSuite.java:208) at junit.framework.TestSuite.run(TestSuite.java:203) at junit.framework.TestSuite.runTest(TestSuite.java:208) at junit.framework.TestSuite.run(TestSuite.java:203) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.junit3.JUnit3TestReference.run(JUnit3TestReference.java:128) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.TestExecution.run(TestExecution.java:38) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.runTests(RemoteTestRunner.java:460) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.runTests(RemoteTestRunner.java:673) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.run(RemoteTestRunner.java:386) at org.eclipse.jdt.internal.junit.runner.RemoteTestRunner.main(RemoteTestRunner.java:196)

How do you set the session? I'm having problems finding any documentation on how to do this. • Unit Testing Error - The unit test adapter failed to connect to the data source or to read the data

    - by michael.lukatchik
I'm using VSTS 2K8 and I've set up a Unit Test Project. In it, I have a test class with a method that does a simple assertion. I'm using an Excel 2007 spreadsheet as my data source. My test method looks like this: [DataSource("System.Data.Odbc", "Dsn=Excel Files;dbq=|DataDirectory|\\MyTestData.xlsx;defaultdir=C:\\TestData;driverid=1046;maxbuffersize=2048;pagetimeout=5", "Sheet1", DataAccessMethod.Sequential)] [DeploymentItem("MyTestData.xlsx")] [TestMethod()] public void State_Value_Is_Set() { string expected = "MD"; string actual = TestContext.DataRow["State"] as string; Assert.AreEqual(expected, actual); } As indicated in the method decoration attributes, my Excel spreadsheet is on my local C:/ Drive. In it, the sheet where all of my data is located is named "Sheet1". I've copied the Excel spreadsheet into my project and I've set its Build Action = "Content" and I've set its Copy to Output Directory = "Copy if Newer". When trying to run this simple unit test, I receive the following error: The unit test adapter failed to connect to the data source or to read the data. For more information on troubleshooting this error, see "Troubleshooting Data-Driven Unit Tests" (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=62412) in the MSDN Library. Error details: ERROR [42S02] [Microsoft][ODBC Excel Driver] The Microsoft Office Access database engine could not find the object 'Sheet1'. Make sure the object exists and that you spell its name and the path name correctly. I've verified that the sheet name is spelled correctly (i.e. Sheet1) and I've verified that my data sources are set correctly. Web searches haven't turned up much at all. And I'm totally stumped. All help or input is appreciated!!!!

  • Disable "System Memory Testing" via OMSA 6.4.0

    - by EGr
Is it possible to disable system memory testing via OMSA 6.4.0? I can only find ways to do it using newer versions of OMSA; and I can't even see the setting in 6.4.0. I have quite a few machines that I want to disable this (BIOS) setting on, but I don't want to have to install the new OMSA and reboot. My intentions are to disable the setting so that when the systems are rebooted in the future, they don't need to go through the system memory testing. If it is possible to disable this another way, without OMSA or manually changing the BIOS settings, I would be open to that as well.

  • How to fake Azure Table Storage in .NET for Unit Testing?

    - by Erick T
I am working on a system that uses Azure Table Storage. In other systems (e.g., SQL, File based, etc), I can write a fake that allows me to test my data persistence logic. However, I can't see an easy way to create a fake for the Azure Table Service. I could create a new IIS project that behaves the same way, but that isn't a good way to write a unit test, it is more of an integration test. Any thoughts on how to unit test data access code that uses the Azure Table Storage client? Thanks, Erick

  • Rolling Back Microsoft CRM during testing

    - by npeterson
Process related question: Currently we have a multi-tenant installation of MS CRM 4.0 on three servers, Dev, Test, and Live. We are actively working on customizing one of the tenants, but the others are static. During user testing, we often find it necessary to 'start fresh' in one of the tenants. Is it better to try and delete out the changes from the tenant (created accounts, leads, etc), or just revert the database to a backup from before the testing started? Is there compelling reasons why bulk delete is not advisable for MSCRM or that reverting the database frequently could cause issue?

  • Is unit testing the definition of an interface necessary?

    - by HackedByChinese
I have occasionally heard or read about people asserting their interfaces in a unit test. I don't mean mocking an interface for use in another type's test, but specifically creating a test to accompany the interface. Consider this ultra-lame and off-the-cuff example: public interface IDoSomething { string DoSomething(); } and the test: [TestFixture] public class IDoSomethingTests { [Test] public void DoSomething_Should_Return_Value() { var mock = new Mock<IDoSomething>(); var actualValue = mock.Expect(m => m.DoSomething()).Returns("value"); mock.Object.DoSomething(); mock.Verify(m => DoSomething()); Assert.AreEqual("value", actualValue); } } I suppose the idea is to use the test to drive the design of the interface and also to provide guidance for implementors on what's expected so they can draw good tests of their own. Is this a common (recommended) practice?

  • Controlling azure worker roles concurrency in multiple instance

    - by NER1808
I have a simple work role in azure that does some data processing on an SQL azure database. The worker basically adds data from a 3rd party datasource to my database every 2 minutes. When I have two instances of the role, this obviously doubles up unnecessarily. I would like to have 2 instances for redundancy and the 99.95 uptime, but do not want them both processing at the same time as they will just duplicate the same job. Is there a standard pattern for this that I am missing? I know I could set flags in the database, but am hoping there is another easier or better way to manage this. Thanks
