• Best way to build an application based on R?

  I'm looking for suggestions on how to go about building an application that uses R for analytics, table generation, and plotting. What I have in mind is an application that: displays various data tables in different tabs, somewhat like in Excel, and the columns should be sortable by clicking. takes user input parameters in some dialog windows. displays plots dynamically (i.e. user-input-dependent) either in a tab or in a new pop-up window/frame Note that I am not talking about a general-purpose fron-end/GUI for exploring data with R (like say Rattle), but a specific application. Some questions I'd like to see addressed are: Is an entirely R-based approach even possible ( on Windows ) ? The following passage from the Rattle article in R-Journal intrigues me: It is interesting to note that the first implementation of Rattle actually used Python for implementing the callbacks and R for the statistics, using rpy. The release of RGtk2 allowed the interface el- ements of Rattle to be written directly in R so that Rattle is a fully R-based application If it's better to use another language for the GUI part, which language is best suited for this? I'm looking for a language where it's relatively "painless" to build the GUI, and that also integrates very well with R. From this StackOverflow question How should I do rapid GUI development for R and Octave methods (possibly with Python)? I see that Python + PyQt4 + QtDesigner + RPy2 seems to be the best combo. Is that the consensus ? Anyone have pointers to specific (open source) applications of the type I describe, as examples that I can learn from?

• Which way to go in Linux 3D programming?

  I'm looking for some answers for a project I'm thinking of. I've searched and from what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) the only way the program I want to make will work is through 3D application. Let me explain. I plan to make a studio production program but it's unique in the fact that I want to be able to make it fluid. Let me explain. Imagine Microsoft's Surface program where you're able to touch and drag pictures across the screen. Instead of pictures I want them to be sound samples (wavs,mp3,etc). Of course instead the input will be with the mouse but if I ever do finish the project I would totally add touch screen input compatibility! Anyway, I'm guessing there's "physics" to do with it which is why I'm thinking that even though it'll be a 2D application I'll need to code it in a 3D environment. Assuming that I'm correct in how I want to approach my project, where can I start learning about 3D programming? I actually come from PHP programming which will make C++ easier for me to learn. But I don't even know where to start. If I'm not wrong OpenGL is the most up to date API as far as I know. Anyway, please give me your insights guys. I could really use some guidance here since I could totally be wrong in everything that I wrote :)

• Help me sort programing languages a bit

  Hi, so I asked here few days ago about C# and its principles. Now, if I may, I have some additional general questions about some languages, becouse for novice like me, it seems a bit confusing. To be exact I want to ask more about language functions capabilities than syntax and so. To be honest, its just these special functions that bothers me and make me so confused. For exmaple, C has its printf(), Pascal has writeln() and so. I know in basic the output in assembler of these funtions would be similiar, every language has more or less its special functions. For console output, for file manipulation, etc. But all these functions are de-facto part of its OS API, so why is for example in C distinguished between C standard library functions and (on Windows) WinAPI functions when even printf() has to use some Windows feature, call some of its function to actually show desired text on console window, becouse the actuall "showing" is done by OS. Where is the line between language functions and system API? Now languages I dont quite understand - Python, Ruby and similiar. To be more specific, I know they are similiar to java and C# in term they are compiled into bytecode. But, I do not unerstand what are its capabilities in term of building GUI applications. I saw tutorial for using Ruby to program GUI applications on Linux and Windows. But isn´t that just some kind of upgrade? I mean fram other tutorials It seemed like these languages was first intended for small scripts than building big applications. I hope you understand why I am confused. If you do, please help me sort it out a bit, I have no one to ask.

• Generating a python file

  Hi! I'm havin issues with python (imo python itself is an issue). I have a txt file, it contains a custom language and I have to translate it to a working python code. The input: import sys n = int(sys.argv[1]) ;;print "Beginning of the program!" LOOP i in range(1,n) {print "The number:";;print i} BRANCH n < 5 {print n ;;print "less than 5"} The wanted output looks exactly like this: import sys n = int(sys.argv[1]) print "Beginning of the program!" for i in range(1,n) : print "The number:" print i if n < 5 : print n print "less than 5" The name of the input file is read from parameter. The out file is out.py. In case of a wrong parameter, it gives an error message. The ;; means a new line. When I tried to do it, I made an array, I read all the lines into it, split by " ". Then I wanted to strip it from the marks I don't need. I made 2 loops, one for the lines, one for the words. So then I started to replace the things. Everything went fine until it came to the } mark. It finds it, but it can not replace or strip it. I have no more idea what to do. Could someone help me, please? Thanks in advance!

• Cakephp 1.3, Weird behavior on firefox when using $this->Html->link ...

  Greetings, I am getting a very weird and unpredictable result in firefox when using the following syntax: $this->Html->link($this->Html->div('p-cpt',$project['Project']['name']) . $this->Html->div('p-img',$this->Html->image('/img/projects/'.$project['Project']['slug'].'/project.thumb.jpg', array('alt'=>$project['Project']['name'],'width'=>100,'height'=>380))),array('controller' => 'projects', 'action' => 'view', $project['Project']['slug']),array('title' => $project['Project']['name'], 'escape' => false),false); OK I know it is big but bear with me. The point is to get the following output: <a href="x" title="x"> <div class="p-ctp">Name</div> <div class="p-img"><img src="z width="y" height="a" alt="d" /></div> </a> I'm not sure if this validates correctly both on cakephp and html but it works everywhere else apart from firefox. You can actually see the result here: http://www.gnomonconstructions.com/projects/browser To reproduce the result use the form with different categories and press search. At some point it will happen!! Although most of the time it renders the way it should, sometimes it produces an invalid output like that: <a href="x" title="x"></a> <div class="p-cpt"> <a href="x" title="x">name</a> </div> <div class="p-img"> <a href="x" title="x"><img src="x" width="x" height="x" alt="x" /></a> </div> Looks like it repeats the link inside each element.   So I read a quick PHP login system securing article, and was trying to sort of duplicate their hashing method, and during testing, am not getting the proper output. '<br />'; echo 'Hash: ' . $hash . '<br />'; echo 'Salt: ' . $salt . '<br />'; echo 'Decrypt: ' . decryptPassword($hash, $salt); Now, the output of this should be pretty obvious, but unfortunately, the $hash variable always comes out empty! I'm trying to figure out what the problem could be, and my only guess would be the second $hash assignment line in the encryptPassword(..) function. After a little testing, I've determined that the first assignment works smoothly, but the second does not. Any suggestions? Thanks SO!

  Hi, I'm trying to use QtXmlQuery to extract some data from XML. I'd like to put this into a QStringList. • How do you make an added row from QueryAddRow() the first row of the result from a query?

  I am outputting a query but need to specify the first row of the result. I am adding the row with QueryAddRow() and setting the values with QuerySetCell(). I can create the row fine, I can add the content to that row fine. If I leave the argument for the row number off of QuerySetCell() then it all works great as the last result of the query when output. However, I need it to be first row of the query but when I try to set the row attribute with the QuerySetCell it just overwrites the first returned row from my query (i.e. my QueryAddRow() replaces the first record from my query). What I currently have is setting a variable from recordCount and arranging the output but there has to be a really simple way to do this that I am just not getting.   I am programing some image conversion code with OpenCV and I don't know how can I create image memory buffer to load image on every iteration. I have number of iteration (maxImNumber) and I have an input image. In every loop program must create image that is resized and modified input image. • Segmentation fault on instationation of more than 1 object

Why would this occur if more than 1 object is instantiated, and how can i allow multiple objects to be instantiated?

• In RoR, is there an easy way to prevent the view from outputting <p> tags?

  I'm new to Ruby and Rails and I have a simple controller that shows an item from the database in a default view. When it is displaying in HTML it is outputting <p> tags along with the text content. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I suppose if there isn't, is there at least a way to set the default css class for the same output in a statement such as this: <% @Items.each do |i| %> <%= i.itemname %> <div class="menu_body"> <a href="#">Link-1</a> </div> <% end %> So the problem is with the <%= i.itemname %> part. Is there a way to stop it from wrapping it in its own <p> tags? Or set the css class for the output? Thanks!

• StringBufferInputStream Question in Java

  I want to read an input string and return it as a UTF8 encoded string. SO I found an example on the Oracle/Sun website that used FileInputStream. I didn't want to read a file, but a string, so I changed it to StringBufferInputStream and used the code below. The method parameter jtext, is some Japanese text. Actually this method works great. The question is about the deprecated code. I had to put @SuppressWarnings because StringBufferInputStream is deprecated. I want to know is there a better way to get a string input stream? Is it ok just to leave it as is? • Have ASP page call save function anytime the user tries to navigate away from page

  What I have is an input page with a bunch of dynamically created textboxes for the user to input data. The textboxes are dynamically created because the number that are needed are not known until the user selects some options on the page. So what I need to have happen is if the user tries to either A) navigate away from the page or B) select different options bringing up new textboxes. Anything the user may have typed into the textboxes needs to automatically be saved to the database. Like they clicked on the save button on the page. This doesn't sound like a vary smart way to do things or even an easy way to do things but this is the requirement I have been given. No message just save to the database. I have looked into things like onbeforepageunload javascript but that mostly tries to stop the user from navigating away I can't call any code behind code from it. Any help is appreciated. Note : The number of the texboxes with data can be any where between 20 and 500. Yes very crazy but not my idea.

I would like to know if, once compiled, these values may change depending on the machine which runs the program. E.g.: if I ran this program in a 64-bit machine, would the output be the same?   I have the below tables. tblInput Id WordPosition Words -- ----------- ----- 1 1 Hi 1 2 How 1 3 are 1 4 you 2 1 Ok 2 2 This 2 3 is 2 4 me tblReplacement Id ReplacementWords --- ---------------- 1 Hi 2 are 3 Ok 4 This The tblInput holds the list of words while the tblReplacement hold the words that we need to search in the tblInput and if a match is found then we need to replace those. But the problem is that, we need to replace those words if any match is found at the beginning. i.e. in the tblInput, in case of ID 1, the words that will be replaced is only 'Hi' and not 'are' since before 'are', 'How' is there and it is not in the tblReplacement list. in case of Id 2, the words that will be replaced are 'Ok' & 'This'. Since these both words are present in the tblReplacement table and after the first word i.e. 'Ok' is replaced, the second word which is 'This' here comes first in the list of ID category 2 . Since it is available in the tblReplacement, and is the first word now, so this will also be replaced. So the desired output will be Id NewWordsAfterReplacement --- ------------------------ 1 How 1 are 1 you 2 is 2 me My approach so far: ;With Cte1 As( Select t1.Id ,t1.Words ,t2.ReplacementWords From tblInput t1 Cross Join tblReplacement t2) ,Cte2 As( Select Id, NewWordsAfterReplacement = REPLACE(Words,ReplacementWords,'') From Cte1) Select * from Cte2 where NewWordsAfterReplacement <> '' But I am not getting the desired output.   I'm building a site using CakePHP and am currently working on adding data to two separate tables at the same time.. not a problem. The problem I have is that I'm looking to dynamically alter the form that accepts the input values, allowing the click of a button/link to add an additional row of form fields. At the moment I have a table that looks something like this: <table> <thead> <tr> <th>Campus</th> <th>Code</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td> <select id="FulltimeCourseCampusCode0CampusId" name="data[FulltimeCourseCampusCode][0][campus_id]"> <option value=""></option> <option value="1">Evesham</option> <option value="2">Malvern</option> </select> </td> <td> <input type="text" id="FulltimeCourseCampusCode0CourseCode" name="data[FulltimeCourseCampusCode][0][course_code]"> </td> </tr> </tbody> What I need is for the row within the tbody tag to be replicated, with the minor change of having all the zeros (i.e. such as here FulltimeCourseCampusCode0CampusId and here data[FulltimeCourseCampusCode][0][campus_id]) incremented. I'm very new to jQuery, having done a few minor bits, but nothing this advanced (mostly just copy/paste stuff). Can anyone help? Thank you.

• saveall not saving associated data

  I'm having a problem trying to save (update) some associated data. I've read about a million google returns, but nothing seems to be the solution. I'm at my wit's end and hope some kind soul here can help. I'm using 1.3.0-RC4, my database is in InnoDB. Course has many course_tees CourseTee belongs to course My controller function is pretty simple (I've made it as simple as possible): if(!empty($this-data)) $this-Course-saveAll($this-data); I've tried a lot of different variations of that $this-data['Course'], save($this-data), etc without luck. It saves the Course info, but not the CourseTee stuff. I don't get an error message. Since I don't know how many tees any given course will have, I generate the form inputs dynamically in a loop. $form-input('CourseTee.'.$i.'.teeName', array('error' = false, 'label' = false, 'value'=$data['course_tees'][$i]['teeName'])) The course inputs are simpler: $form-input('Course.hcp'.$j, array('error' = false, 'label' = false, 'class' = 'form_small_w', 'value'=$data['Course']['hcp'.$j])) And this is how my data is formatted: Array ( [Course] = Array ( [id] = 1028476 ... ) [CourseTee] = Array ( [0] = Array ( [key] = 636 [courseid] = 1028476 ... ) [1] = Array ( [key] = 637 [courseid] = 1028476 ... ) ... ) )

  Our professor gave us the following assignment: A "correct" series is one inwhich the sum of its members equals to the index of its first member. The program is supposed to find the length of the LONGEST "correct" series within a series of n numbers. for example: if the input series would be arr[4]={1, 1, 0, 0} the output (longest "correct" series) would be 3. arr[0]=1. 0!=1 therefore the longest series here is 0. arr[1]=1,and 1=1. but the follwing members also sum up to 1 as shown below: 1=arr[1]+arr[2]+arr[3] = 1+ 0 + 0, therefore the longest series here is 3. the output in this example is 3. The issue is that it works one way (i.e. when I type a password in the password-verify field). However, when the original password field is updated, the password-verify doesn't become valid. Any idea how I could have a "two way binding verify?"

• Why is my content being overwritten instead of replaced in jQuery/Ajax?

  I've got jquery being used in ajax to pass some contents into a database, my problem however has nothing to do with the db.. I have input fields in an id called #clientscontainer. When I click "save" in that container, it automatically refreshes the container correctly ... $('#clientscontainer').html(html); The problem is, a couple of those input fields (such as a description and title), have instances in another div that i want to refresh upon the save click. The other ID is: $('div#' + clientID') When I do $('div#' + clientID').html(html); it refreshes the content from clientscontainer in it instead of just the variables that I want to update. When I try to pass just the variable $(blurb).html(html); it updates the blurb but it ONLY displays that variable in the div# clientID div... whereas I just want to replace it. • How to keep track of call statistics? C++

  I'm working on a project that delivers statistics to the user. I created a class called Dog, And it has several functions. Speak, woof, run, fetch, etc. I want to have a function that spits out how many times each function has been called. I'm also interested in the constructor calls and destructor calls as well. I have a header file which defines all the functions, then a separate .cc file that implements them. My question is, is there a way to keep track of how many times each function is called? I have a function called print that will fetch the "statistics" and then output them to standard output. I was considering using static integers as part of the class itself, declaring several integers to keep track of those things. I know the compiler will create a copy of the integer and initialize it to a minimum value, and then I'll increment the integers in the .cc functions. I also thought about having static integers as a global variable in the .cc. Which way is easier? Or is there a better way to do this? Any help is greatly appreciated!
