• Free Team Foundation Service a Boon for Play Projects

  My ‘jump in and sink or swim’ learning style leads me to create dozens of unbillable ‘play’ projects in Visual Studio 2012.  For example, I’m currently learning to customize the powerful auction/fixed price/classifieds software called AuctionWorx Enterprise.  I make stupid mistakes as I grasp a new API and configure projects. It’s frustrating to go down a rat hole and discover the VS IDE’s Undo doesn’t reach back to a working build from the previous weekend. Enter Visual Studio’s Free Team Foundation Service.  Put your play projects into the free source control and check in (or shelve) a snapshot before embarking on something risky. (I already use Discount ASP.NET’s Team Foundation Server hosting for client projects so there’s zero TFS/VS learning curve for me and first class GUI support.) TFS is free right now for teams of five or fewer. I’m not naive enough to expect ‘free’ to last forever. So, it’ll be interesting to see how much Microsoft intends to charge in 2013 for TFS. In the meantime, why not grab some free source code storage? BTW, it’s weird to realize that Microsoft is backing up my junky little playtime code on three physically-distinct servers every day - and taking incremental backups every hour.

• Taking our Friendships to the next level.

  Red Gate have been running the Friends of Red Gate program for years now, and over that time we've built some great relationships with some truly awesome members of the SQL and .NET communities. When I took over the running of the program from Annabel in 2011, I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and commitment of our Friends. There were just so many of them, however, that it was hard to make the most of the relationships we had with people, and I wanted to fix that. I decided to survey all our Friends, to find out what they wanted to get out of, and put into, being in the Friends of Red Gate (FoRG) program. From the results of that survey, I identified 30 FoRGs that were really willing and able to go that step further to help Red Gate improve their tools, improve their relationship with the community, and improve the Friends of Red Gate program. Those 30 Friends of Red Gate have been awarded 'FoRG+' status. That means they'll: Have a closer relationship with the product teams, by getting involved in projects Have even more access to the inside track about the tools they're interested in Get the opportunity to come visit us at the Red Gate office and really influence the development of the tools. Plus more, depending on how the individual FoRG+ wants to work with us. This doesn't mean I've forgotten our other Friends; I'm working on ways to improve their experience of the Friends of Red Gate program. I'll write about them in another post. • Sync Google Contacts with QuickBooks

  The RSSBus ADO.NET Providers offer an easy way to integrate with different data sources. In this article, we include a fully functional application that can be used to synchronize contacts between Google and QuickBooks. Like our QuickBooks ADO.NET Provider, the included application supports both the desktop versions of QuickBooks and QuickBooks Online Edition. Getting the Contacts Step 1: Google accounts include a number of contacts. To obtain a list of a user's Google Contacts, issue a query to the Contacts table. For example: SELECT * FROM Contacts. Step 2: QuickBooks stores contact information in multiple tables. Depending on your use case, you may want to synchronize your Google Contacts with QuickBooks Customers, Employees, Vendors, or a combination of the three. To get data from a specific table, issue a SELECT query to that table. For example: SELECT * FROM Customers Step 3: Retrieving all results from QuickBooks may take some time, depending on the size of your company file. To narrow your results, you may want to use a filter by including a WHERE clause in your query. For example: SELECT * FROM Customers WHERE (Name LIKE '%James%') AND IncludeJobs = 'FALSE' Synchronizing the Contacts Synchronizing the contacts is a simple process. Once the contacts from Google and the customers from QuickBooks are available, they can be compared and synchronized based on user preference. The sample application does this based on user input, but it is easy to create one that does the synchronization automatically. The INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE statements available in both data providers makes it easy to create, update, or delete contacts in either data source as needed. Note that this demo is built using BETA builds of the ADO.NET Provider for Google V2 and ADO.NET Provider for QuickBooks V3, and will expire in 2013. • Connecting a Samsung Galaxy S3 in Ubuntu 13.04

  In 13.04, whenever I connect an Android device, one of three things happens: 1 . It mounts successfully (maybe once out of 3 attempts) 2 . It fails to mount with the following error message: Oops! Something went wrong. Unhandled error message: Unable to open MTP device 3 . This one occasionally happens: Unhandled error message: No such interface `org.gtk.vfs.Mount' on object at path /org/gtk/vfs/mount/1 Regardless of activity (even when successfully mounted) it will continuously spam the following error message: Unable to mount SAMSUNG_Android Unable to open MTP Device '[usb:003,00x]' where x seems to be an arbitrary number below 10 and continues counting up with each new error message until the device is unplugged. I've also just noticed that even if it mounts successfully, it unmounts after about 30 seconds and starts spamming the error message above. The Android device is unlocked, always on and fully charged. ADB seems to function normally. Any suggestions? Further info: this happens on both a stock Samsung S3 and an Xperia Arc S running a custom AOSP based ROM. I've also tried the steps outlined in this Stack Overflow answer, but the problem persists. UPDATE: After doing a dist-upgrade (May 8th 2013), the Xperia Arc S on AOSP ROM now mounts and behaves normally. The S3, however, still behaves as described above. UPDATE: After careful observation, ABD does not, in fact, behave normally. If the error message above appears while sending an app to the device, the attempt is aborted with an error message saying that the device is unavailable.

  Trying to get casperjs running on Ubuntu 12.04. After installing it when I run I get: 09:20 $ ll /usr/local/bin/casperjs lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 Nov 6 16:49 /usr/local/bin/casperjs -> /opt/casperjs/bin/casperjs 09:20 $ /usr/bin/env python --version Python 2.7.3 09:20 $ cat /opt/casperjs/bin/casperjs | head -4 #!/usr/bin/env python import os import sys 09:20 $ casperjs : No such file or directory 09: 22 $ python Python 2.7.3 (default, Sep 26 2013, 20:03:06) [GCC 4.6.3] on linux2 So Python is present and runnable, casperjs is pointing to the right place and it is a python script. But when I run it I get "No such file". I can fix it by changing the first line of the casperjs python file from: #!/usr/bin/env python to: #!/usr/bin/python Result: $ casperjs --version 1.1.0-DEV I managed to fix it, but I'm wondering why it didn't work with #!/usr/bin/env python, since that seems to be a normal interpreter line. Do I have something configured wrong?   i am trying to install an init.d script, to run celery for scheduling tasks. Here is the steps i followed: copied the file celeryd and pasted it in folder /etc/init.d/ created a configuration file celeryd in folder /etc/default/ now when i tried to start it by sudo /etc/init.d/celeryd start, it throws error sudo: /etc/init.d/celeryd: command not found I googled about how to install init.d, i got this SO-question. it says to issue a uname -a and when i does i get this: Linux capsonesystem8-desktop 3.2.0-43-generic-pae #68-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 15 03:55:10 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux and also it says use utils like insserv to enable init.d script so tried: insserv /etc/init.d/celeryd but it throws error insserv: command not found so i tried to install insserv sudo apt-get install insserv. but it say aleady installed: insserv is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 222 not upgraded. So how to install init.d script?? Any help will be appreciated. update1: when i tried: $ sh -x /etc/init.d/celeryd start it reveal some errors. may be that is why the service won’t start. update2: I cleared all the errors when i run $ sh -x /etc/init.d/celeryd start but still sudo /etc/init.d/celeryd start throws command not found error

• Squid 3 and Internet Explorer 11 with authentication

  Need some help. My college has up until now been running Squid 3 on Ubuntu 12.02 and now 14.04 successfully. That was till recently. Our WSUS server is dishing out updates to all our workstations of which Internet Explorer 11 is one of them. Now all of a sudden users do not need to authenticate via the squid proxy to be able to use the internet. This makes it rather difficult as I also use SARG to generate usage logs for all users each day. All our workstations also have Chrome on them, and Chrome authenticates fine via the Squid proxy. Doing a couple of Googles, I ran into and article, where someone made mention that Microsoft has deprecated digest and basic authentication from IE 11. Reason was given that Office 2013 was giving problems as it was not giving the popup screen for authentication when Office tries to download templates from the internet. I have run into this problem, but by setting those sites to not authenticate via squid fixed the problem. Has anyone else run into something similiar? Would changing to NTLM or Kereberos be a solution?

• How to get Autocad working with Wine?

  I am trying 3 years now installing Autocad,*3ds Max* and Revit architecture on Ubuntu with wine! Every year I am very optimistic 'cause I see the new wine versions already improved. So, now I am starting again in a clean Ubuntu installation to install Autocad 2013 with wine 1.4. I am not trying to have an answer only for me, but I want this community to try and finally we can achieve that! The winetricks have already net framework 4 to install which is the reason I have not already ran to the past Autocad. So, I would like to remove completely my windows 7 partition from my pc and go on a linux machine without loosing the powerfull architectural programms.I know all about Blender and staff so I just want you to help find a solution on that, because I know there is a solution! Maybe I will have to learn all the c++ or python etc. But I am sure that a solution can come with the help of all of us! Any suggestion about this problem will be very nice and helpfull.

• How to use the Raring/Saucy netboot installer to install Precise?

  We have a Haswell motherboard with onboard ethernet controllers which are not supported in the Precise (3.2) kernel. However, we're using netboot installation, and we'd really like to stick with the LTS version. Once the Precise install is completed, we can install the linux-generic-lts-saucy package, which gets us the ethernet hardware support which is ultimately required. So, our options are: Plug in a USB-Ethernet (or even wifi) dongle, perform the install that way. Modify the Precise installer to somehow include the required driver (a udeb, or some early_command invocation?) Modify the Raring installer (3.8 kernel, which supports the device) to instead install Precise. If it's possible the third option seems like the simplest and most logical to me. Now, we are already using the precise-updates installer (Aug 2013), as opposed to the original April 2012 installer. However, the precise-updates installer still appears to use the 3.2 kernel. I'm already comfortable with preseeding and modifying the netboot initrd. So my question is, can I somehow modify the Raring/Saucy netboot initrd to instead install Precise? Thanks.

• Why Are Minimized Programs Often Slow to Open Again?

  It seems particularly counterintuitive: you minimize an application because you plan on returning to it later and wish to skip shutting the application down and restarting it later, but sometimes maximizing it takes even longer than launching it fresh. What gives? Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. The Question SuperUser reader Bart wants to know why he’s not saving any time with application minimization: I’m working in Photoshop CS6 and multiple browsers a lot. I’m not using them all at once, so sometimes some applications are minimized to taskbar for hours or days. The problem is, when I try to maximize them from the taskbar – it sometimes takes longer than starting them! Especially Photoshop feels really weird for many seconds after finally showing up, it’s slow, unresponsive and even sometimes totally freezes for minute or two. It’s not a hardware problem as it’s been like that since always on all on my PCs. Would I also notice it after upgrading my HDD to SDD and adding RAM (my main PC holds 4 GB currently)? Could guys with powerful pcs / macs tell me – does it also happen to you? I guess OSes somehow “focus” on active software and move all the resources away from the ones that run, but are not used. Is it possible to somehow set RAM / CPU / HDD priorities or something, for let’s say, Photoshop, so it won’t slow down after long period of inactivity? So what is the deal? Why does he find himself waiting to maximize a minimized app? The Answer SuperUser contributor Allquixotic explains why: Summary The immediate problem is that the programs that you have minimized are being paged out to the “page file” on your hard disk. This symptom can be improved by installing a Solid State Disk (SSD), adding more RAM to your system, reducing the number of programs you have open, or upgrading to a newer system architecture (for instance, Ivy Bridge or Haswell). Out of these options, adding more RAM is generally the most effective solution. Explanation The default behavior of Windows is to give active applications priority over inactive applications for having a spot in RAM. When there’s significant memory pressure (meaning the system doesn’t have a lot of free RAM if it were to let every program have all the RAM it wants), it starts putting minimized programs into the page file, which means it writes out their contents from RAM to disk, and then makes that area of RAM free. That free RAM helps programs you’re actively using — say, your web browser — run faster, because if they need to claim a new segment of RAM (like when you open a new tab), they can do so. This “free” RAM is also used as page cache, which means that when active programs attempt to read data on your hard disk, that data might be cached in RAM, which prevents your hard disk from being accessed to get that data. By using the majority of your RAM for page cache, and swapping out unused programs to disk, Windows is trying to improve responsiveness of the program(s) you are actively using, by making RAM available to them, and caching the files they access in RAM instead of the hard disk. The downside of this behavior is that minimized programs can take a while to have their contents copied from the page file, on disk, back into RAM. The time increases the larger the program’s footprint in memory. This is why you experience that delay when maximizing Photoshop. RAM is many times faster than a hard disk (depending on the specific hardware, it can be up to several orders of magnitude). An SSD is considerably faster than a hard disk, but it is still slower than RAM by orders of magnitude. Having your page file on an SSD will help, but it will also wear out the SSD more quickly than usual if your page file is heavily utilized due to RAM pressure. Remedies Here is an explanation of the available remedies, and their general effectiveness: Installing more RAM: This is the recommended path. If your system does not support more RAM than you already have installed, you will need to upgrade more of your system: possibly your motherboard, CPU, chassis, power supply, etc. depending on how old it is. If it’s a laptop, chances are you’ll have to buy an entire new laptop that supports more installed RAM. When you install more RAM, you reduce memory pressure, which reduces use of the page file, which is a good thing all around. You also make available more RAM for page cache, which will make all programs that access the hard disk run faster. As of Q4 2013, my personal recommendation is that you have at least 8 GB of RAM for a desktop or laptop whose purpose is anything more complex than web browsing and email. That means photo editing, video editing/viewing, playing computer games, audio editing or recording, programming / development, etc. all should have at least 8 GB of RAM, if not more. Run fewer programs at a time: This will only work if the programs you are running do not use a lot of memory on their own. Unfortunately, Adobe Creative Suite products such as Photoshop CS6 are known for using an enormous amount of memory. This also limits your multitasking ability. It’s a temporary, free remedy, but it can be an inconvenience to close down your web browser or Word every time you start Photoshop, for instance. This also wouldn’t stop Photoshop from being swapped when minimizing it, so it really isn’t a very effective solution. It only helps in some specific situations. Install an SSD: If your page file is on an SSD, the SSD’s improved speed compared to a hard disk will result in generally improved performance when the page file has to be read from or written to. Be aware that SSDs are not designed to withstand a very frequent and constant random stream of writes; they can only be written over a limited number of times before they start to break down. Heavy use of a page file is not a particularly good workload for an SSD. You should install an SSD in combination with a large amount of RAM if you want maximum performance while preserving the longevity of the SSD. Use a newer system architecture: Depending on the age of your system, you may be using an out of date system architecture. The “system architecture” is generally defined as the “generation” (think generations like children, parents, grandparents, etc.) of the motherboard and CPU. Newer generations generally support faster I/O (input/output), better memory bandwidth, lower latency, and less contention over shared resources, instead providing dedicated links between components. For example, starting with the “Nehalem” generation (around 2009), the Front-Side Bus (FSB) was eliminated, which removed a common bottleneck, because almost all system components had to share the same FSB for transmitting data. This was replaced with a “point to point” architecture, meaning that each component gets its own dedicated “lane” to the CPU, which continues to be improved every few years with new generations. You will generally see a more significant improvement in overall system performance depending on the “gap” between your computer’s architecture and the latest one available. For example, a Pentium 4 architecture from 2004 is going to see a much more significant improvement upgrading to “Haswell” (the latest as of Q4 2013) than a “Sandy Bridge” architecture from ~2010. • configuring USB modem( Huawei EC156) in ubuntu 13.10

  I am facing difficulty in installing my USB modem in Ubuntu 13.10. Contrary to what many have suggested,it does not get detected automatically, nor does setting a new connection help. USB Device is listed in lsusb, but not under network manager or Devices, it is detected as a CD-ROM, what I understood from the web was that usb-modeswitch can be used to switch it to a USB device. Even 'Enable Mobile Broadband' option is not shown in network manager. What was interesting is when I start laptop with windows 7 and use the USB modem and after that restart with Ubuntu, both Enable Broadband and the mobile broadband connection can be seen. Sadly, internet connection could not be installed. I tried using USB-modeswitch command as suggested somewhere, but it does not seem to work. Following is the message. • Is .Net Going to Die As far as Server Apps and Desktop Apps are concerned? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What does Windows 8 mean for the future of .NET? The Windows 8 preview doesn't mention .Net, and the demo seems to showcase what HTML, CSS and Javascript can do on Windows 8 OS. The impression I get from watching it is that HTML , Javascript is going to figure prominently in Windows 8, even for the traditional windows desktop applications. That, couple with the fact that there is no mentioning of .Net 5 and Visual Studio 2012 or 2013( MS is pretty quick to announce the next generation VS tools) yet, makes me worry that sooner or later, Microsoft will abandon the .Net platform completely. Yes, not just abandoning Silverlight, but the .Net platform in general. Which means that all the desktop apps, server apps you wrote in .Net is going to be obsolete, much like how VB6 apps are now obsolete. Is .Net going to die? Of course you won't find that all .Net apps stop running tomorrow. But will there be a day-- even when at that time Microsoft is alive and kicking-- when .Net apps are looked upon as legacy apps in the way we perceive VB6 apps? • Can anyone recommend an AI sandbox?

  I'm passionate person, who has been around AI from a long time [1] but never going in deep enough. Now it's time! I've been really looking for some way to concentrate on AI coding but couldn't succeeded to find an AI environment I can focus on. I just want to use an AI sandbox environment which would let me have tools like: visibility information character controller able to easily define a level, with obstacles of course physics collider management triggers management don't need to be a shiny, eye candy graphical render : this is about pathfinding, tactical reasoning, etc.. I have tried : Unreal Dev Kit : while the new release announce is about C++ coding, this is about external tools and will be released in 2013 Cry Engine : really interesting as AI is presents here but coding with it appears to be an hell: did I got it wrong ? Half Life source, C4, Torque, Dx Studio : either quite old, not very useful or costly these imply to dig in documentation (when provided) to code everything, graphics included. Unity 3D : the most promising platform. While you also need to create your own environment, there are lot of examples. The disadvantage is, in addition to spend time to have this env. working, is the languages choice : C#, Javascript or Boo. C# is not that hard, but this implies you'll allways have to convert papers (I love those from Lars Linden) books codes, or anything you can have in Aigamedev are most often in C++. This is extra work. I've look at "Simple Path", the very good Arong Greenberg work but no source provided and AngryAnt work. AI Sandbox : this seems to be exactly what as AI coder I want to use. I saw some preview but from 2009 we still don't know what it will be about precisely, will it be opensource or free (I strongly doubt), will I be able to buy it? will it really provide me tools I need to focus on AI ? That being said, what is the best environment to be able to focus on AI coding only, is it even possible?

• Should I start MCPD training now or wait for new exams?

  i apologize if this question has been asked before, or if this is the wrong place to put it. I'm beginning my study track for the MCPD certification in Web Development. However, Microsoft plans to retire this certification on July 31st of 2013, along with two of the necessary tests to receive the certification. On MS's site, I can't find a newer certification path to take - I imagine that Microsoft will release new certification paths and new tests for their new software, but I don't know when that will happen. I don't really know anything about Microsoft's process, as this is the first Microsoft certification I'll be studying for. The bottom line is this - I don't want to lose six months waiting for a new test to appear that won't expire, but I don't want to rush to get a certification that will be invalid in six months (or have to reset any progress due to new study material). To those with experience in affairs like this - what is the best course to take, and can I maximize the time I have now (not wait for new testing material)? Is there any way to find material for the new tests that Microsoft will be rolling out? Thank you for your patience. • After upgrading to 13.10, biblatex and biber are not compiling my references

  I am working on a thesis using LaTeX, with my references relying on biblatex-apa. Ubuntu 13.04 provided all my LaTeX needs. But after upgrading to 13.10, the biblatex / biber combo will no longer compile my APA-style references. No other changes have been made to my documents or references -- and the rest of the document appears fine (albeit with broken references and no bibliography). I found reference to a possible cause -- which is that biblatex 1.7-1 is incompatible with texlive 2013 (as available through the 13.10 repositories) -- and that issue may be fixed by biblatex 2.7a-1 which has been committed upsteam in Debian. See: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=718244 However, that doesn't help me much, as I need to compile my references quite soon. How can I get my references to compile in the meantime? Is there a patched biblatex or biber that I can manually slot in place? Is the upstream fix on its way? or do I need to go to TexLive and do a replacement install directly (which is not my preference). Thanks!
