• Automatic incremental SQL Script generation for incremental, nightly builds when using Team Build in

  hi all, hope that everybody here is OK. We are using VS 2008 as development tool, TFS 2008 as version control as well as build automation. Some of our developer use dbpro for databases changes and some use SQL Server management studio. I am trying to automate build for Web Application built using C# and VB.Net. Our scenario is such that we have a central database to which our web application connects. Whenever we supply our clients with a new functionality or a bug fix, we supply them incremental builds. The SQL script is checked into source control for every incremental build when they have made and tested there changes on our central DB Server. I want to generate Differential script that can be run at the client as an incremental update script. Now to come about it is a problem. Sometimes our developers tend to forget the database change-sets and the script in the source control is missing an SP or a two. Also, sometimes we need to insert default data into some of the tables that have strict stringent values and not test values. Like a table that contains Services provided by the panel, we add a new service name, signature, credentials and service address, etc etc in the ServiceTable. Besides this many other tables may have test data that may not be needed. If we use DataCompare, it will generate changeset for required data (important for client to enable certain services) and our test data that was added to the database as a result of our testing of the functionality or bug fix. Currently i am using SQLSchemaCompareTask (from Visual Studio 2008 Team Database Professional Power Tools API) in the TFSBuild.proj file of the build definition for TFS 2008. Using SQLSchemaCompareTask, the script generated contains database names like [dbo]. etc which are not desired as the script fails when run against SQL Server 2000 databses (Some of our client still use SQL Server 2000) databases as teh backend of the application. Also default data can't be generated by this process. To overcome this problem, i have to come up with a solution that can compare databases and generate script automatically that does not have to be manually reviewed again before being sent to the client. Please suggest effective methodology of such SQL script generation and suggest whether two different databases may be used or something ? Is there any toolkit or api that can enable build automation for SQL Server databases? Thank you all. Regards Steve

• Running a Java daemon with a GWT front-end served by embedded Jetty

  Greetings, coders, Background Info and Code I am trying to create a daemon-type program (e.g., it runs constantly, polling for things to do) that is managed by a GWT application (servlets in a WAR) which is in turn served by an embedded Jetty server (using a WebAppContext). I'm having problems making the GWT application aware of the daemon object. For testing things, I currently have two projects: The daemon and embedded Jetty server in one (EmbJetTest), and the GWT application in another (DefaultApp). This is the current state of the code: First, EmbJetTest creates an embedded Jetty server like so, using a ServletContextListener to inject the daemon object into the web application context: EmbJetTest.server = new Server(8080); // Create and start the daemon Daemon daemon = new Daemon(); Thread thread = new Thread(daemon); thread.start(); // war handler WebAppContext waContext = new WebAppContext(); waContext.setContextPath("/webapp"); waContext.setWar("./apps/DefaultApp.war"); waContext.addEventListener(new DaemonLoader(daemon)); // Add it to the server EmbJetTest.server.setHandler(waContext); EmbJetTest.server.setThreadPool(new QueuedThreadPool(10)); // Start the server; join() blocks until we shut down EmbJetTest.server.start(); EmbJetTest.server.join(); // Stop the daemon thread daemon.stopLoop(); Daemon is a very simple object with a couple properties, at the moment. This StackOverflow answer indicates that this is because the two classes are loaded with different classloaders. Question My question is twofold. Am I even on the right track here? Am I going about this completely the wrong way? Something tells me I am, but I can't think of another way to make the daemon available to both applications. Is there a better way to communicate with the daemon from the GWT application? Should the GWT app own the daemon and somehow start the daemon itself? The daemon needs to run even if no one visits the one of the GWT app's servlets--how could I do this? If I am on the right track, how can I get around the classloader issue? Thanks in advance.

• JavaScript/Dojo Module Pattern - how to debug?

  I'm working with Dojo and using the "Module Pattern" as described in Mastering Dojo. So far as I can see this pattern is a general, and widely used, JavaScript pattern. My question is: How do we debug our modules? So far I've not been able to persuade Firebug to show me the source of my module. Firebug seems to show only the dojo eval statement used to execute the factory method. Hence I'm not able to step through my module source. I've tried putting "debugger" statements in my module code, and Firebug seems to halt correctly, but does not show the source. Contrived example code below. • log4net not logging with a mixture of .net 1.1 and .net 3.5

  Hi All, I have an iis server on a windows 2003 production machine that will not log using log4net in the .net3.5 web application. Log4net works fine in the 1.1 apps using log4net version 1.2.9.0 and but not the 3.5 web app. The logging works fine in a development and staging environment but not in production. It does not error and I receive no events logged in the event viewer and don't know where to look next. I have tried both versions of log4net (1.2.9.0 and 1.2.10.0) and both work in development and staging but not in production. For testing purposes I have created just a single page application that just echos back the time when the page is hit and also is supposed to log to my logfile using log4net. • Control third check box based on the state of the first two using jquery

  I have three check boxes and need to disable the third if either and/or of the other two are checked. I'm sure there's a easier way than what I have currently. It's turning into what I believe is a mess and I'm hoping that someone with more jquery knowledge can shine the light here. I don't understand why. This works, but one of the requirements is that a non programmer should be able to edit and maintain this. Ideally it'd be great if he could just add new check boxes to the html and it would work. The class for these are define and as far as I know can't be changed. The last check box in the list of check boxes will disable if any of the ones above are selected. Like wise if the last check box is selected, it will disable all the ones above it. I haven't even begun writing and testing that portion as this is quickly becoming too complicated for a non programmer to handle. I myself am more of a PHP coder than a js, let alone jquery, coder. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I noticed that the same problem occurs with other wrapped libraries; if they themselves have external dependencies, the ClassNotFoundExceptions propagate like mad, even if I've wrapped the jars of the libraries they require and added them as dependencies to the original wrapped library module. • Environment variable does not get read?

  I have a console application in Visual studio. i have log4net stuff with smtp appender in my app.config file. I have set environment variable in my code (i.e. my email address) and trying to reference this environment variable to send email. However log4net doesn't seem to read this value when the application is run. • Maven webapp with maven-eclipse-plugin doesn't generate <dependent-module>

  I use the eclipse:eclipse goal to generate an Eclipse Project environment. The deployment works fine. The goal creates the var classpath entries for all needed dependencies. With m2eclipse there was the Maven Container which defines an export folder which was WEB-INF/lib for me. But i don't want to rely on m2eclipse so i don't use it anymore. the class path entries which are generated by eclipse:eclipse goal don't have such a export folder. While booting the servlet container with WTP it publishes all resources and classes except the libraries to the context. Whats missing to publish the needed libs, or isn't that possible without m2eclipse integration?   I have developed a Web Service using JAX-WS (v2.1.3 - Sun JDK 1.6.0_05) deployed on WebLogic 10.3 that works just fine when I use a Java client or SoapUI or other Web Services testing tools.   I'm building the 2nd iteration of a web-based CRM+CMS for a franchise service business in ASP.NET MVC 2. I need to control access to each franchise's services based on the roles a user is assigned for that franchise. 4 examples: Receptionist should be able to book service jobs in for her "Atlantic Seaboard" franchise, but not do any reporting. Technician should be able to alter service jobs, but not modify invoices. Managers should be able to apply discount to invoices for jobs within their stores. Owner should be able to pull reports for any franchises he owns. Where should franchise-level access control fit in between the Data - Services - Web layer? If it belongs in my Controllers, how should I best implement it? I thought of this: {franchise}/{controller}/{action}/{id} or is it better to determine a job's franchise in a Details(...) action and limit a user's action with [Authorize]: {job}/{id}/{action}/{subaction} {invoice}/{id}/{action}/{subaction} which makes more sense if any user could potentially have access to more than one franchise without cluttering the URL with a {franchise} parameter. • Why are emails sent from my applications being marked as spam?

  Hi. I have 2 web apps running on the same server. The first is www.nimikri.com and the other is www.hourjar.com. Both apps share the same IP address (75.127.100.175). My server is through a shared hosting company. I've been testing my apps, and at first all my emails were being delivered to me just fine. Then a few days ago every email from both apps got dumped into my spam box (in gmail and google apps). So far the apps have just been sending emails to me and nobody else, so I know people aren't manually flagging them as spam. I did a reverse DNS lookup for my IP and the results I got were these: 100.127.75.in-addr.arpa NS DNS2.GNAX.NET. 100.127.75.in-addr.arpa NS DNS1.GNAX.NET. Should the reverse DNS lookup point to nimikri.com and hourjar.com, or are they set up fine the way they are? I noticed in the email header these 2 lines: Received: from nimikri.nimikri.com From: Hour Jar <[email protected]> Would the different domain names be causing gmail to think this is spam? • Accurately display upload progress in Silverilght upload

  I'm trying to debug a file upload / download issue I'm having. I've got a Silverlight file uploader, and to transmit the files I make use of the HttpWebRequest class. So I create a connection to my file upload handler on the server and begin transmitting. While a file uploads I keep track of total bytes written to the RequestStream so I can figure out a percentage. Now working at home I've got a rather slow connection, and I think Silverlight, or the browser, is lying to me. It seems that my upload progress logic is inaccurate. When I do multiple file uploads (24 images of 3-6mb big in my testing), the logic reports the files finish uploading but I believe that it only reflects the progress of written bytes to the RequestStream, not the actual amount of bytes uploaded. What is the most accurate way to measure upload progress. • Contract developer trying to get outsourcing contract with current client.

  I work for a major bank as a contract software developer. I've been there a few months, and without exception this place has the worst software practices I've ever seen. The software my team makes has no formal testing, terrible code (not reusable, hard to read, etc), minimal documentation, no defined development process and an absolutely sickening amount of waste due to bureaucratic overhead. Part of my contract is to maintain a group of thousands of very poorly written batch jobs. When one of the jobs fails (read: crashes), it's a developers job to look at the source, figure out what's wrong, fix it, and check it in. There is no quality assurance process or auditing of the results whatsoever. Once the developer says "it works" a manager signs off and it goes into production. What's disturbing is that these jobs essentially grab market data and put it into a third-party risk management system, which provides the bank with critical intelligence. I've discovered the disturbing truth that this has been happening since the 90s and nobody really has evidence the system is getting the correct data! Without going into details, an issue arose on Friday that was so horrible I actually stormed out of the place. I was ready to quit, but I decided to just get out to calm my nerves and possibly go back Monday. I've been reflecting today on how to handle this. I have realized that, in probably less than 6 months, I could (with 2 other developers) remake a large component of this system. The new system would provide them with, as primary benefits, a maintainable codebase less prone to error and a solid QA framework. To do it properly I would have to be outside the bank, the internal bureaucracy is just too much. And moreover, I think a bank is fundamentally not a place that can make good software. This is my plan. Write a report explaining in depth all the problems with their current system Explain why their software practices fail and generate a tremendous amount of error and waste. Use this as the basis for claiming the project must be developed externally. Write a high level development plan, including what resources I will require Hand 1,2,3 to my manager, hopefully he passes it up the chain. Worst case he fires me, but this isn't so bad. Convinced Executive decides to award my company a contract for the new system I have 8 years experience as a software contractor and have delivered my share of successful software products, but all working in-house for small/medium sized companies. When I read this over, I think I have a dynamite plan. But since this is the first time doing something this bold so I have my doubts. My question is, is this a good idea? If you think not, please spare no detail.

  I use Authlogic with the Authlogic-openid addon (I gem installed ruby- openid and script/plugin install git://github.com/rails/open_id_authentication.git) and get two errors. First when running functional test, I get an undefined method openid_identifier? message on a line in my new.html.erb file when running the UsersControllerTest. The line is: <% if @user.openid_identifier? %> When running script/console I can access this method without any problem. • Is this asking too much of a browser?

  I'm embedding a large array in <script> tags in my HTML, like this (nothing surprising): <script> var largeArray = [/* lots of stuff in here */]; </script> In this particular example, the array has 210,000 elements. That's well below the theoretical maximum of 231 - by 4 orders of magnitude. Here's the fun part: if I save JS source for the array to a file, that file is 44 megabytes (46,573,399 bytes, to be exact). If you want to see for yourself, you can download it from my Dropbox. (All the data in there is canned, so much of it is repeated. This will not be the case in production.) Now, I'm really not concerned about serving that much data. My server gzips its responses, so it really doesn't take all that long to get the data over the wire. However, there is a really nasty tendency for the page, once loaded, to crash the browser. I'm not testing at all in IE (this is an internal tool). My primary targets are Chrome 8 and Firefox 3.6. In Firefox, I can see a reasonably useful error in the console: Error: script stack space quota is exhausted In Chrome, I simply get the sad-tab page: Cut to the chase, already Is this really too much data for our modern, "high-performance" browsers to handle? Is there anything I can do* to gracefully handle this much data? Incidentally, I was able to get this to work (read: not crash the tab) on-and-off in Chrome. I really thought that Chrome, at least, was made of tougher stuff, but apparently I was wrong... Edit 1 @Crayon: I wasn't looking to justify why I'd like to dump this much data into the browser at once. Short version: either I solve this one (admittedly not-that-easy) problem, or I have to solve a whole slew of other problems. I'm opting for the simpler approach for now. @various: right now, I'm not especially looking for ways to actually reduce the number of elements in the array. • debugging JBoss 100% CPU usage

  Originally posted on Server Fault, where it was suggested this question might better asked here. We are using JBoss to run two of our WARs. One is our web app, the other is our web service. The web app accesses a database on another machine and makes requests to the web service. The web service makes JMS requests to other machines, aggregates the data, and returns it. At our biggest client, about once a month the JBoss Java process takes 100% of all CPUs. The machine running JBoss has 8 CPUs. Our web app is still accessible during this time, however pages take about 3 minutes to load. Restarting JBoss restores everything to normal. The database machine and all the other machines are fine, only the machine running JBoss is affected. Memory usage is normal. Network utilization is normal. There are no suspect error messages in the JBoss logs. I have set up a test environment as close as possible to the client's production environment and I've done load testing with as much as 2x the number of concurrent users. I have not gotten my test environment to replicate the problem. Where do we go from here? How can we narrow down the problem? Currently the only plan we have is to wait until the problem occurs in production on its own, then do some debugging to determine the cause. So far people have just restarted JBoss when the problem occurred to minimize down time. Next time it happens they will get a developer to take a look. The question is, next time it happens, what can be done to determine the cause? We could setup a separate JBoss instance on the same box and install the web app separately from the web service. This way when the problem next occurs we will know which WAR has the problem (assuming it is our code). This doesn't narrow it down much though. Should I enable JMX remote? This way the next time the problem occurs I can connect with VisualVM and see which threads are taking the CPU and what the hell they are doing. However, is there a significant down side to enabling JMX remote in a production environment? Is there another way to see what threads are eating the CPU and to get a stacktrace to see what they are doing? Any other ideas? Thanks!

• Geolocation SQL query not finding exact location

  I have been testing my geolocation query for some time now and I haven't found any issues with it until now. I am trying to search for all cities within a given radius, often times I'm searching for cities surrounding a city using that city's coords, but recently I tried searching around a city and found that the city itself was not returned. I have these cities as an excerpt in my database: city latitude longitude Saint-Mathieu 45.316708 -73.516253 Saint-Édouard 45.233374 -73.516254 Saint-Michel 45.233374 -73.566256 Saint-Rémi 45.266708 -73.616257 But when I run my query around the city of Saint-Rémi, with the following query... SELECT tblcity.city, tblcity.latitude, tblcity.longitude, truncate((degrees(acos( sin(radians(tblcity.latitude)) * sin(radians(45.266708)) + cos(radians(tblcity.latitude)) * cos(radians(45.266708)) * cos(radians(tblcity.longitude - -73.616257) ) ) ) * 69.09*1.6),1) as distance FROM tblcity HAVING distance < 10 ORDER BY distance desc I get these results: city latitude longitude distance Saint-Mathieu 45.316708 -73.516253 9.5 Saint-Édouard 45.233374 -73.516254 8.6 Saint-Michel 45.233374 -73.566256 5.3 The town of Saint-Rémi is missing from the search. So I tried a modified query hoping to get a better result: SELECT tblcity.city, tblcity.latitude, tblcity.longitude, truncate(( 6371 * acos( cos( radians( 45.266708 ) ) * cos( radians( tblcity.latitude ) ) * cos( radians( tblcity.longitude ) - radians( -73.616257 ) ) + sin( radians( 45.266708 ) ) * sin( radians( tblcity.latitude ) ) ) ),1) AS distance FROM tblcity HAVING distance < 10 ORDER BY distance desc But I get the same result... However, if I modify Saint-Rémi's coords slighly by changing the last digit of the lat or long by 1, both queries will return Saint-Rémi. Also, if I center the query on any of the other cities above, the searched city is returned in the results. Can anyone shed some light on what may be causing my queries above to not display the searched city of Saint-Rémi? I have added a sample of the table (with extra fields removed) below. I'm using MySQL 5.0.45, thanks in advance. • compile AMR-nb codec with RVCT for WinCE/Window Mobile

  Hello everybody, I'm working on amr speech codec (porting/optimization) I have an arm (for WinCE) optimized version from voiceage and I use it as a reference in performance testing. So far, binary produced with my lib beats the other one by around 20-30%! I use Vs2008 and I have limited access to ARM instruction set I can generate with Microsoft compiler. So I tried to look for alternative compiler to see what would be performance difference. I have RVCT compiler, but it produces elf binaries/object files. However, I run my test on a wince mobile phone (TyTn 2) so I need to find a way to run code compiled with RVCT on WinCE. Some of the options are 1) to produce assembly listing (-S option of armcc), and try to assemble with some other assembler that can create COFF (MS assembler for arm) 2) compile and convert generated ELF object file to COFF object (seems like objcopy of gnu binutils could help me with that) 3) using fromelf utility supplied by RVCT create BIN file and somehow try to mangle the bits so I can execute them ;) My first attempt is to create a simple c++ file with one exported function, compile it with RVCT and then try to run that function on the smartphone. The emitted assembly cannot be assembled by the ms assembler (not only they are not compatible, but also ms assembler rejects some of the instructions generated with RVCT compiler; ASR opcode in my case) Then I tried to convert ELF object to coff format and I can't find any information on that. There is a gcc port for ce and objcopy from that toolset is supposed to be able to do the task. However, I can't get it working. I tried different switches, but I have no idea what exactly I need to specify as bfdname for input and output format. So, I couldn't get it working either. Dumping with fromelf and using generated bin file seems to be overkill, so I decided to ask you guys if there is anything I should try to do or maybe someone has already done similar task and could help me. Basically, all I want to do is to compile my code with RVCT compiler and see what's the performance difference. My code has zero dependencies on any c runtime functions. thanks!

• Panning weirdness on an UserControl

  Hello, I'm trying to build my own "PictureBox like" control adding some functionalities. For example, I want to be able to pan over a big image by simply clicking and dragging with the mouse. The problem seems to be on my OnMouseMove method.
