• Question about [literally] mapping location based on an IP address.

  I've been bored lately and I want to start a new project. I was looking at a website mentioned in a different question (http://www.grapevinegame.com/), and I thought the map and how it plots a point based on someone's IP (I assume) is pretty nifty. I want to do something like that, but I have no idea how it's done. I know you can get latitude and longitude, city and state, and some more with some already-written scripts, but how would you plot those on a map of the world? I've seen it other places, like Google Analytics and such, as well. It seems like a neat thing to be able to do, so I was just wondering how exactly it works. :-p.

• How many real world developers are involved with the Demoscene?

  I grew up learning to code based on what I've experienced with the demoscene. It seems to be a pretty sparse subculture in the US. How many developers watch or participate in the scene? • Data Usage Checker Tools

  Hey All, I am about to begin a project for a new client, and am worried about a few things concerning data usage on their internet plan. We're in an area where most of the major networks don't cover the area, and the ones that do, have very expensive plans, with very low data allowance per month. I need to develop an app, but part of the problem lies with checking database values every 30 seconds. It's pretty important that this check is happening every 30 seconds, as the database is actually updated all day everyday, approx. every 5seconds (apparently). Each row in the database consists of about a page full of text if you were to paste it into MS Word. So, are there any logical ways of minimizing data usage in my case, and also how am I able to see exactly how much data is used just to establish a connection to the database? Are there any tools for this kind of info? Thanks :)

Consider I have a class: class Test: def __init__(self, x, y): self.x = x self.y = y def wow(): print 5 * 5 Now I try to create an object of the class: x = Test(3, 4) This works as expected. However, when I try to call the method wow(), it returns an error, which is fixed by changing wow() to: def wow(self) Why do I need to include self and if I don't, what does the method mean?2. In the definition of __init__: def __init__(self, x, y): self.x = x self.y = y Why do I need to declare x and y, when I can do this: def __init__(self): self.x = x self.y = y I hope I am being clear... • SQL to return the rownum of a specific row? (using Oracle db)

  In Oracle 10g, I have this SQL: select dog.id as dogId from CANINES dog order by dog.codename asc which returns: id -- 204 203 206 923 I want to extend this query to determine the oracle rownum of a dog.id in this resultset. I have tried select rownum from (select dog.id as dogId from CANINES dog order by dog.codename asc) where dog.id=206 But this does not work out very well (it returns 1 no matter which dog.id I match on). • Java: pass an event to another component

  Sorry I don't know if this is very clear, but I'm pretty new to Java. So I have a JFrame with a BorderLayout containing a JPanel and a JButton. What I want to do is when something happens in my JPanel, I want for example change the text of the JButton, or enable/disable it. How would I do that? How can I access the JButton from the JPanel? I know some ways of doing it but I don't think they're the best way to do it. What would be the best way to do this? Thanks in advance

• WPF: Best method for printing paginated datagrids

  Boy did I get an education looking into this. I guess I've been spoiled by Powerbuilder, which has fantastic functionality for this out of the box. Does anyone seriously write custom documentpaginator objects to handle reporting needs for their LOB apps? I want to be able to print "for free" and not have to code like crazy just to take whats on the screen and throw it on paper. How are people doing this? Does anyone have a recommended 3rd party for allowing printing of largish datagrids? Thanks

• Can I add and remove elements of enumeration at runtime in Java

  It is possible to add and remove elements from an enum in Java at runtime? For example, could I read in the labels and constructor arguments of an enum from a file? @saua, it's just a question of whether it can be done out of interest really. I was hoping there'd be some neat way of altering the running bytecode, maybe using BCEL or something. I've also followed up with this question because I realised I wasn't totally sure when an enum should be used. I'm pretty convinced that the right answer would be to use a collection that ensured uniqueness instead of an enum if I want to be able to alter the contents safely at runtime.

• I am using jquery ajax using text() but any html written in the XML doesn't render?

  So I have Jquery Ajax working real nice, but an issue I am having is in my XML if I want to bold a work or Italicize a sentence, if I do it in the XML using HTML tags it will not show up. I am pretty sure it is due to using the .text(). • Handling static files with Django / lighttpd

  I know that there is already a question (actually some more) about this, but the answers to them didn't help me out very much, as I am pretty new to lighttpd. I have one folder which contains .pdf-files. When doing a HttpResponseRedirect to the locations of one of those .pdf-files, the user should be able to download the .pdf file (or view it in the browser). Right now, Django just redirects to my "home" html page, without showing any pdf-file. Somehow, I will have to tell lighttpd that Django shouldn't handle this directory anymore. Is this the only thing I need to do? If yes, how should i do it?

• "input cannot be resolved" when added a try..catch

  I originally tried to get my throw statement to work without a try catch and the userInput = input.nextInt(); line worked fine. But when I tried adding the try..catch it didn't like my input saying it cannot be resolved. I don't think my try..catch is correct yet but I am planning on tackling that after I can get this input to be recognized but I would appreciate any feedback on things you see with that as well. • Basic Python: Exception raising and local variable scope / binding

  I have a basic "best practices" Python question. I see that there are already StackOverflow answers tangentially related to this question but they're mired in complicated examples or involve multiple factors. Given this code: #!/usr/bin/python def test_function(): try: a = str(5) raise b = str(6) except: print b test_function() what is the best way to avoid the inevitable "UnboundLocalError: local variable 'b' referenced before assignment" that I'm going to get in the exception handler? Does python have an elegant way to handle this? If not, what about an inelegant way? In a complicated function I'd prefer to avoid testing the existence of every local variable before I, for example, printed debug information about them.

• Java: PriorityQueue returning incorrect ordering from custom comparator??

  I've written a custom comparator to compare my node classes, but the java priority queue is not returning my items in the correct order. Here is my comparator: public int compare(Node n1, Node n2){ if (n1.getF() > n2.getF()){ return +1; } else if (n1.getF() < n2.getF()){ return -1; } else { // equal return 0; } } Where getF returns a double. However after inserting several Nodes into the priority queue, I print them out using: while(open.size() > 0) { Node t = (Node)(open.remove()); System.out.println(t.getF()); } Which results in: 6.830951894845301 6.830951894845301 6.0 6.0 5.242640687119285 7.4031242374328485 7.4031242374328485 8.071067811865476 Any ideas why this is so?   It is quite puzzling to find out that Generics Constraint Can't Be Casted to Its Derived Type. Let's say I have the following code: public abstract class BaseClass { public int Version { get { return 1; } } public string FixString { get; set; } public BaseClass() { FixString = "hello"; } public virtual int GetBaseVersion() { return Version; } } public class DeriveClass: BaseClass { public new int Version { get { return 2; } } } And guess what, this method will return a compilation error: public void FreeConversion<T>(T baseClass) { var derivedMe = (DeriveClass)baseClass; } I would have to cast the baseClass to object first before I can cast it to DerivedClass. Seems to me pretty ugly. Why this is so?

I am having 1 problem at the moment which I want to solve before I go further, but I cannot seem to find how to get the problem solved. It is about a while loop that continues.. in the below code is where it goes wrong while 1: try: data = self.channel.recv ( 1024 ) print "Message from client: ", data if "exit" in data: self.channel.send("You have closed youre connection.\n") break except KeyboardInterrupt: break except: raise When this piece of code get executed, on my client I need to enter "exit" to quit the connection. This works as a charm, but when I use CTRL+C to exit the connection, my server prints "Message from client: " a couple of thousand times. where am I going wrong?

  Is there any method that is called or event that is dispatched right before an Element is cleaned up by the JavaScript garbage collector? In Perl I would write: package MyObj; sub new {bless {}} sub DESTROY {print "cleaning up @_\n"} and then later: { my $obj = MyObj->new; # do something with obj } # scope ends, and assuming there are no external references to $obj, # the DESTROY method will be called before the object's memory is freed My target platform is Firefox (and I have no need to support other browsers), so if there is only a Firefox specific way of doing this, that is fine. And a little background: I am writing the Perl module XUL::Gui which serves as a bridge between Perl and Firefox, and I am currently working on plugging a few memory leaks related to DOM Elements sticking around forever, even after they are gone and no more references remain on the Perl side. So I am looking for ways to either figure out when JavaScript Elements will be destroyed, or a way to force JavaScript to cleanup an object.

• Maven overlay with war not generated by maven

  I'm pretty new to Maven, so I apologize if this is a newbie question. We are trying to integrate a 3rd-party app into ours. This 3rd-party functionality is delivered to us as a war file. As part of this integration, I want to add some extra jars and and a properties file. Googling around, I discovered overlays. However, in all the examples I've seen, it looks the the wars that are being overlayed, were themselves generated by Maven, and thus Maven can figure out dependencies, conflicts, etc. between the two. I'm just wondering if there's a way for me to overlay this 3rd-party war with this extra stuff I want. If so, what would that look like in the pom.xml?

• Elegant Method of Inserting Code Between Loops

  In web development, I often find I need to format and print various arrays of data, and separate these blocks of data in some manner. In other words, I need to be able to insert code between each loop, without said code being inserted before the first entry or after the last one. The most elegant way I've found to accomplish this is as follows: function echoWithBreaks($array){ for($i=0; $i<count($array); $i++){ //Echo an item if($i<count($array)-1){ //Echo "between code" } } } Unfortunately, there's no way that I can see to implement this solution with foreach instead of for. Does anyone know of a more elegant solution that will work with foreach?

• Neat way of gettings position of my Object in linq collections

  I currently have a object called Week. A week is part of a Season object. the season can contain many weeks. What I want to do is find the position of my week (is it the first week in the season (so #1) or is it the second (so #2). int i = 0; foreach ( var w in Season.Weeks.OrderBy(w => w.WeekStarts)){ if(w.Id == Id){ return i; } i+=1; } At the moment this is what I have. I order the weeks in a second by there start date to make sure they are in the correct order. and I cycle through them until I find the week that matches the week I am currently looking at. and return the int that I have been counting up.. I feel there should be a easier linq way to do this as it feels pretty messy!

  Hi everybody, I'm using the python logging module with the "native" configuration file support (config.fileconfig) as describe in the documentation here : http://docs.python.org/library/logging.html (see the logging.conf file) I was wondering if it's possible to supply a tabulated data format in the configuration file? The sample configuration file is the following: [formatter_simpleFormatter] format=%(asctime)s - %(name)s - %(levelname)s - %(message)s I though that using the \t in the format would be enough but it doesn't. format=%(asctime)s\t%(name)s\t%(levelname)s\t%(message)s\t If I do so it print \t in the result. I tried a couple of thing without success. I suppose it's really easy to do but I don't find it! How can I do that?

Programs such as wget or curl will non-interactively retrieve a set of URLs, but do not execute javascript or any of that 'fancy stuff'.
