• .NET: Allow NULLS in DB fields?

  Hi there, I have the task of re-factoring an SQLServer DB.... A lot of the tables and columns "ALLOW NULLS", Is this good practice... I seem to remember the authour of CSLA.NET saying it was really bad practice to allow nulls in a DB... If this is the case, what are my alternatives? Remove all "ALLOW NULLS" from all columns.... and in numeric columns use a value of -1 for example?? I would really appreciate any input anyone has. I am currently using a Model (from entity framework) from my DB and the db columns that "ALLOW NULLS" are null ... and some of the stored procedures require that i have a default value... i.e. BOOLEAN require FALSE as default ... but it is null.. Well i don't want to stray from my original question, ALLOW NULLS are a bad thing from what i can gather .... so how do i fix this ? Any help really appreciated

• .NET - getting form field key/value pairs?

  Hi there, I've got a form with textboxes and I want to run some server side validation code on the values after the form is submitted. I was planning to grab all the textbox controls on the page and adding them to a list, then running a for each loop that says for each control in the list query the database where fieldValidation.Name = Control.Name. This would return to me an object and an associated function where i coudl then input the Control.Value and actually perform the validation. My friend told me building the list is not necessary because all languages have a way to get key/value pairs from forms (he doesn't know .NET so coudln't help me). I may be searching the wrong term here but I have not been able to find a result, or maybe I misunderstood my friend. Is there some kind of dictionary or key/value pair automatically generated upon form submissions that contains the value that was submitted and...I guess also the control? Or am I just misunderstanding him. If he was just saying populate a key/value pair based on the form submissions, how does that help me in this situation over a list that contains the control? • .NET Remoting switching channels by itself.

  Hi. We are having an odd problem with .NET Remoting. Basically, we have a server which registers two TcpChannels with ChannelServices.RegisterChannel(): one listens on port 50000, the other one listens on port 15000. We then have a client that registers a TcpChannel to be able to communicate with the server. We retrieve a an object from the server by calling Activator.GetObject() with the URI "tcp://serverip:50000/objectname" and this works fine, the client connects to the server on port 50000 and gets the object. However, when we start calling methods on that object, the connection to the channel on port 50000 is dropped, and a new connection is made to the channel on port 15000 automatically. This poses a real problem for us since we don't want traffic on port 15000 because that channel may not be bound to the same network adapter as the port 50000 channel on the server or that port may not be open in the firewall, which causes the remoting calls to fail naturally. This is very strange to us since the client has no knowledge in our code that there exists another channel on the server on port 15000 or what IP it listens on, yet it attempt to connect to it. • How is unautenticated site navigation handled in ASP.NET?

  Hi. I am wondering how to do the following... I have a registration system. When the user successfully registers, he is then led down a series of data gathering pages (for his profile) and then, finally, ends on his profile's home page where he can start to use the site. All this happens without ever logging into the system so, he is unauthenticated and unconfirmed. My question is, how does this happen? How can I allow my user to be unauthenticated (and unconfirmed, but this I understand) and use all aspects of the Web site? The way I have things set up right now, my code should be doing this: case CreateProfileStatus.Success: //FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(userName, false); Response.Redirect("NextPage.aspx", false); break; but, I am being redirected to the login page after registration which is not the result I want. • Weird .net 4.0 exception when running unit tests

  Hi guys I am receiving the following exception when trying to run my unit tests using .net 4.0 under VS2010 with moq 3.1. Attempt by security transparent method 'SPPD.Backend.DataAccess.Test.Specs_for_Core.When_using_base.Can_create_mapper()' to access security critical method 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.Assert.IsNotNull(System.Object)' failed. Assembly 'SPPD.Backend.DataAccess.Test, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' is marked with the AllowPartiallyTrustedCallersAttribute, and uses the level 2 security transparency model. Level 2 transparency causes all methods in AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers assemblies to become security transparent by default, which may be the cause of this exception. Image imgToCopy = Image.FromFile(Path.Combine(Environment.CurrentDirectory, FileName + ".jpg")); Clipboard.SetImage(imgToCopy); Now my image is in clipboard and i am able to show it in picturebox on other form using below code : mypicturebox.Image = Clipboard.GetImage(); Now the the problem is that i want to show it in default imageviewer of that system. so for that i think using "System.Diagnostics.Process.Start" we can do that.. but i dont know, how to find default imageviewer and how to set clipboard's image in that ... please help me out... if i find solution than thats good otherwise i am thinking to save that file from clipboard to harddisk and then view it in window's default imageviewer... please help me to resolve my problem.. i am using c#.net

Also, in my exception, is it proper to say "cannot be null", or would it be better to say "cannot be Nothing"? I sort of like the way I have it, but since this is VB, maybe I should use Nothing. But since the exception itself is called ArgumentNullException, it feels weird to make the message say "cannot be Nothing". Anyway, I guess it's pretty nitkpicky, just wondered what you folks thought.

• Applying for .net jobs as a "self learner"

  Hi All, I have recently started applying for .Net jobs. I currently work in a sales role with a large telco. I found out quite late that I like programming and as such bought my house and made commitments that mean college is not an option. What I would like to know is, is it harder to get a junior job as a self learner? I have gotten a few enquiries regarding my C.V but nothing concrete yet. I try to be involved in projects as I get the chance and tend to put up any worthwhile projects as I develop them. The other query is how much should I actually know? I've never used linked lists but I know that strings are immutable and I understand what that means. I am only touching on T-SQL but I understand things like how properties function in IL (as two standard methods :) ). I suppose I understand a lot of concepts but specific features need some looking up to implement as I may not know the syntax off the top of my head.

• .NET WebBrowser control with Adobe SVG Viewer

  I'm having problems with SVG files loading in a .NET 2.0 WebBrowser control. If I create a new WinForms application project, drag a WebBrowser control and a button onto the Form1.cs design surface, and add a line to the button's on-click handler to set the Url property of the WebBrowser control to an SVG file, I get two IE script errors at runtime (as in, the dialog you get when there is a Javascript problem). The only line of code I'm writing is therefore: webBrowser1.Url = new Uri(@"http://wiki.allegro.cc/pub/f/fb/Grozilla.svg"); This SVG file loads fine if I browse directly to the link with IE; the errors I get via my test app are: line 2, char 1, error: Invalid character, followed by line 1, char 1, error: Object expected (assuming I answer yes to the prompt to 'continue running scripts on this page'). I'm using IE 7.0.5730.13, Adobe SVG Viewer 3.03 build 94, Visual Studio 2008. Can anyone replicate this? Has anyone seen it/got any idea how to fix it? (edit: previously setting the URL in the constructor for the purposes of the example, but this raised the question of whether or not the control had finished initialising, so have changed the example to use a button - the problem still occurs. This bug originally appeared in production code so the example program I wrote was an attempt to isolate the issue and reproduce it as simply as possible.) (edit 2: having tested on several different machines, this problems seems to be related to IE7 - run IE6, and everything works fine.)

• .NET client getting "not well formed" XML response from Axis web service

  I have a simple .NET app that makes a SOAP call to a third party Axis web service. When I trace the HTTP traffic, I see that the Request looks fine, however I'm getting an exception: "Response is not well-formed XML." The return object is null, as it seems the XML can't be deserialized. One question regarding the various namespace declarations inside the wsdl. Several of these declarations point to URLs / domains that no longer exist. Could this cause any problems? • Finally! Entity Framework working in fully disconnected N-tier web app

  Entity Framework was supposed to solve the problem of Linq to SQL, which requires endless hacks to make it work in n-tier world. Not only did Entity Framework solve none of the L2S problems, but also it made it even more difficult to use and hack it for n-tier scenarios. It’s somehow half way between a fully disconnected ORM and a fully connected ORM like Linq to SQL. Some useful features of Linq to SQL are gone – like automatic deferred loading. If you try to do simple select with join, insert, update, delete in a disconnected architecture, you will realize not only you need to make fundamental changes from the top layer to the very bottom layer, but also endless hacks in basic CRUD operations. I will show you in this article how I have  added custom CRUD functions on top of EF’s ObjectContext to make it finally work well in a fully disconnected N-tier web application (my open source Web 2.0 AJAX portal – Dropthings) and how I have produced a 100% unit testable fully n-tier compliant data access layerfollowing the repository pattern. http://www.codeproject.com/KB/linq/ef.aspx In .NET 4.0, most of the problems are solved, but not all. • What ORM for .NET should I use?

  I'm relatively new to .NET and have being using Linq2Sql for a almost a year, but it lacks some of the features I'm looking for now. I'm going to start a new project in which I want to use an ORM with the following characteristics: It has to be very productive, I don't want to be dealing with the access layer to save or retrieve objects from or to the database, but it should allows me to easily tweak any object before actually commit it to the database; also it should allows me to work easily with a changing database schema It should allows me to extend the objects mapped from the database, for example to add virtual attributes to them (virtual columns to a table) It has to be (at least almost) database agnostic, it should allows me to work with different databases in a transparent way It has to have not so much configuration or must be based on conventions to make it work It should allows me to work with Linq So, do you know any ORM that I could use? Thank you for your help. EDIT I know that an option is to use NHibernate. This appears as the facto standard for enterprise level applications, but also it seems that is not very productive because its deep learning curve. In other way, I have read in some other post here in SO that it doesn't integrate well with Linq. Is all of that true?

• .Net Remoting: Serialize Object and implementation

  Hi, In my scenario there is a client-side assembly that contains a class (Task). This class implements an interface (ITask) that is known on the server. I'm trying to send a Task object from client to server without copying the assembly of the client manually to the server. If I just serialize the task object, the server obviously complains about the missing assembly. I then tried to serialze typeof(Task).Assembly but could not derserialize it on the server. Next I tried to File.ReadAllBytes(typeof(Task).Assembly.Location) and saved it to a temporary file on the server, which threw an exception on Assembly.LoadFrom(@".\temporary.dll"); Why am I doing this? Java RMI has a neat feature to request the implementation of an object that is received through remoting but is stil "unkown" (this JVM doesn't have the *.class file). This can be used for a compute server that just knows the interface of a "task" containing a run() method and downloads the implementation of this method on demand. This way the server doesn't have to be changed for new tasks. I'm trying to achieve something like this in .Net.

• Naming multi-instance performance counters in .NET

  Most multiple instance performance counters in Windows seem to automatically(?) have a #n on the end if there's more than one instance with the same name. For example: if, in Perfmon, you look under the Process category, you'll see: ... dwm explorer explorer#1 ... I have two explorer.exe processes, so the second counter has #1 appended to its name. When I attempt to do this in a .NET application: I can create the category, and register the instance (using the PerformanceCounterCategory.Create that takes a CounterCreationDataCollection). I can open the counter for write and write to it. When I open the counter a second time, it opens the same counter. This means that I have two applications fighting over the counters. The documentation for PerformanceCounter.InstanceName states that # is not allowed in the name. So: how do I have multiple-instance performance counters that are actually multiple instance? And where the second (and subsequent) instances get #n appended to the name? That is: I know that I can put the process ID (e.g.) on the instance name. This works, but has the unfortunate side effect that restarting the process results in a new PID, and Perfmon continues monitoring the old counter.

  My first time using ADO.net. Trying to make database of Users. First I populate my DataSet: adapter.AcceptChangesDuringFill = true; adapter.AcceptChangesDuringUpdate = true; adapter.Fill(dataset); To create a user: User user = new User(); user.datarow = dataset.Users.NewUsersRow(); user.Name = username; user.PasswordHash = GetHash(password); user.Rights = UserRights.None; users.Add(user); dataset.Users.AddUsersRow(user.datarow); adapter.Update(dataset); When a user property is modified: adapter.Update(dataset); Creation by itself is fine. If I take an existing user and make multiple changes, fine. Multiple creations in a row, fine. Creation followed by a property change, I get this: "Concurrency violation: the UpdateCommand affected 0 of the expected 1 records." Any ideas?

• IE7 doesn't render part of page until the window resizes or switch between tabs

  I have a problem with IE7. I have a fixed layout for keeping the header and a sidepanel fixed on a page leaving only the "main content" area switch can happily scroll it's content. This layout works perfectly fine for IE6 and IE8, but sometimes one page may start "hiding" the content that should be showing in the "main content" area. The page finishes loading just fine. For a split second IE7 will render the main content just fine and then it will immediately hide it from view.. somewhere.. It would also seem that it only experiences this problem when there is enough content to force the "main content" area to scroll. By resizing the window or switching to another open tab and back again will cause IE7 to show the page as it was intended. Note the same problem does occur with IE8 in compatibility mode, but the page is rendered correctly in IE8 mode. If need be I can attach the basic CSS styling I use, but I first want to see if this is a known issue with IE7. Does IE7 have issues with positioned layout and overflow scrolling that is sometimes likes to forgot to finish rendering the page correctly until some window redraw event forces to finish rendering? Please remember, this exact same layout is used across multiple pages in the site as it is set up in a master page. It is just (in this case) one page that is experiencing this problem. Other pages with the exact same layout do render correctly. Even if the main content is full enough to also scroll. UPDATE: A related question which doesn't have an answer at this point. LATE UPDATE: Adding example masterpage and css Please note this same layout is the same for all the pages in the application. My problem with IE7 only occurs on one such page. All other pages have happily render correctly in IE7. Just one page, using the exact same layout, has issues where it sometimes hides the content in the "work-space" div. • .net real time stream processing - needed huge and fast RAM buffer

  The application I'm developing communicates with an digital audio device, which is capable of sending 24 different voice streams at the same time. The device is connected via USB, using FTDI device (serial port emulator) and D2XX Drivers (basic COM driver is to slow to handle transfer of 4.5Mbit). Basically the application consist of 3 threads: Main thread - GUI, control, ect. Bus reader - in this thread data is continuously read from the device and saved to a file buffer (there is no logic in this thread) Data interpreter - this thread reads the data from file buffer, converts to samples, does simple sample processing and saves the samples to separate wav files. The reason why I used file buffer is that I wanted to be sure that I won't loose any samples. The application doesn't use recording all the time, so I've chosen this solution because it was safe. The application works fine, except that buffered wave file generator is pretty slow. For 24 parallel records of 1 minute, it takes about 4 minutes to complete the recording. I'm pretty sure that eliminating the use of hard drive in this process will increase the speed much. The second problem is that the file buffer is really heavy for long records and I can't clean this up until the end of data processing (it would slow down the process even more). For RAM buffer I need at lest 1GB to make it work properly. What is the best way to allocate such a big amount of memory in .NET? I'm going to use this memory in 2 threads so a fast synchronization mechanism needed. I'm thinking about a cycle buffer: one big array, the Bus Reader saves the data, the Data Interpreter reads it. What do you think about it? [edit] Now for buffering I'm using classes BinaryReader and BinaryWriter based on a file.

• Png image processing in .NET.

  I have the following task. Take a base image and overlay on it another one. The base image is 8b png as well as overlay. Here are the base (left) and overlay (right) images. Here is a result and how it must look. The picture in the left is a screenshot when one picture is on top of another (html and positioning) and the second is the result of programmatic merging. As you can see in the screenshot the borders of the text is darker. I guess that the issue is closed and I am asking here again. Ben M have a nice function which I need for a project. The function is - public static T CreateInstance() { bool bNeedSecurityCheck = true; bool canBeCached = false; RuntimeMethodHandle emptyHandle = RuntimeMethodHandle.EmptyHandle; return (T) RuntimeTypeHandle.CreateInstance(typeof(T) as RuntimeType, true, true, ref canBeCached, ref emptyHandle, ref bNeedSecurityCheck); } I am using .NET 3.5 and Visual studio 2008. It gives the error "EmptyHandle type name does not exist in the type System.RuntimeMethodHandle". Then I used "RuntimeMethodHandle emptyHandle = new RuntimeMethodHandle();". Another error presents. RuntimeTypeHandle does not have a CreateInstance method either. Activator has. But it does not take any ref parameter. Thanks for clarification in advance!

• Reflecting over classes in .NET produces methods only differing by a modifier

  I'm a bit boggled by something, I hope the CLR gearheads can help. Apparently my gears aren't big enough. I have a reflector utility that generates assembly stubs for Cola for .NET, and I find classes have methods that only differ by a modifier, such as virtual. Example below, from Oracle.DataAccess.dll, method GetType(): class OracleTypeException : System.SystemException { virtual string ToString (); virtual System.Exception GetBaseException (); virtual void set_Source (string value); virtual void GetObjectData (System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationInfo info, System.Runtime.Serialization.StreamingContext context); virtual System.Type GetType (); // here virtual bool Equals (object obj); virtual int32 GetHashCode (); System.Type GetType (); // and here } What is this? I have not been able to reproduce this with C# and it causes trouble for Cola as it thinks GetType() is a redefinition, since the signature is identical.   Hi, i m starting a new project that would basically take input from user and save them to database among about 30 screens, and i would like to find a framework that will allow the maximum number of these features out of the box : .net c#. windows form. unit testing continuous integration screens with lists, combo boxes, text boxes, add, delete, save, cancel that are easy to update when you add a property to your classes or a field to your database. auto completion on controls to help user find its way use of an orm like nhibernate easy multithreading and display of wait screens for user easy undo redo tabbed child windows search forms ability to grant access to some functionnalities according to user profiles mvp/mvvm or whatever design patterns either some code generation from database to c# classe or generation of database schema from c# classes some kind of database versioning / upgrade to easily update database when i release patches to application once in production automatic control resizing code metrics analysis some code generator i can use against my entities that would generate some rough form i can rearrange after code documentation generator ... Any ideas ? I know its lot but i really would like to use existing code to build upon so i can focus on business rules. Could splitting the requirements on 3 or 4 existing open source framework be possible ? Do u have any suggestion to add to the list before starting ? What open source tools would u use to achieve these ?

• Getting a list of Tasks that belong to a Role from Azman

  I'm using the AZROLESLib which is from the COM references "azroles 1.0 Type Library" and I am trying to create a list of the designated tasks for each role that I have currently set in my authorization manager but when I loop through the tasks for the role, I get the role name. I've looked all around but couldn't find anything that would help. Here's what I got currently (It's not super pretty but i'm just trying to get it working at the moment).   I have need to cast a generic list of a concrete type to a generic list of an interface that the concrete types implement. This interface list is a property on an object and I am assigning the value using reflection. I only know the value at runtime. Below is a simple code example of what I am trying to accomplish: public void EmployeeTest() { IList<Employee> initialStaff = new List<Employee> { new Employee("John Smith"), new Employee("Jane Doe") }; Company testCompany = new Company("Acme Inc"); //testCompany.Staff = initialStaff; PropertyInfo staffProperty = testCompany.GetType().GetProperty("Staff"); staffProperty.SetValue(testCompany, (staffProperty.PropertyType)initialStaff, null); } Classes are defined like so: public class Company { private string _name; public string Name { get { return _name; } set { _name = value; } } private IList<IEmployee> _staff; public IList<IEmployee> Staff { get { return _staff; } set { _staff = value; } } public Company(string name) { _name = name; } } public class Employee : IEmployee { private string _name; public string Name { get { return _name; } set { _name = value; } } public Employee(string name) { _name = name; } } public interface IEmployee { string Name { get; set; } } Any thoughts? • Alpha blending colors in .NET Compact Framwork 2.0

  In the Full .NET framework you can use the Color.FromArgb() method to create a new color with alpha blending, like this: Color blended = Color.FromArgb(alpha, color); or Color blended = Color.FromArgb(alpha, red, green , blue); However in the Compact Framework (2.0 specifically), neither of those prototypes are valid, you only get: Color.FromArgb(int red, int green, int blue); and Color.FromArgb(int val); The first one, obviously, doesn't even let you enter an alpha value, but the documentation for the latter shows that "val" is a 32bit ARGB value (as 0xAARRGGBB as opposed to the standard 24bit 0xRRGGBB), so it would make sense that you could just build the ARGB value and pass it to the function. I tried this with the following: private Color FromARGB(byte alpha, byte red, byte green, byte blue) { int val = (alpha << 24) | (red << 16) | (green << 8) | blue; return Color.FromArgb(val); } But no matter what I do, the alpha blending never works, the resulting color always as full opacity, even when setting the alpha value to 0. Has anyone gotten this to work on Compact Framework?
