  After running chkdsk C: /F /R and finding out that my hard disk has 24 KB in bad sectors (log is posted below), I decided to run Windows 7's System File Checker utility (sfc /scannow). SFC showed the ff. message after I ran it: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log." Since the CBS.log file is too large, I ran findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" (as per Microsoft's KB 928228 article) to only get the log text pertaining to the corrupt files. (log is also posted below) How do I troubleshoot and repair the corrupted files mentioned by sfc /scannow? • Using "route add" to tell my computer to use a direct ethernet connexion instead of wifi ?

  2 PCs are involved. Both are connected to the internet via Wifi on the same router. I can ping to/from each other and share folders flawlessly, but I'd like to be able to set a direct Ethernet link between them to speed up file transfers AND keep the Wifi connections (no gateway). So I plugged my RJ45 cable, and set up the connection. It works, but the PCs are only using this connection if one of them if disconnected from the Wifi. PC1 local address is 192.168.0.7 on its ethernet interface, and 192.168.1.21 on the wifi one. PC2 local address is 192.168.0.6 on its ethernet interface, and 192.168.1.22 on the wifi one. My question is : I'd like to using the route add command to tell PC1 to use the Ethernet interface when it needs to connect with PC2, by specifying "IF 2" at the end of the route add command. How can I do this ? • PC powers off at random times

  Short Version After experiencing some problems with Mobo batteries my PC started to power off at random times, the power off is instant and sudden and does not restart afterwards, need help figuring out the cause. Facts: Powers off when PC is playing games Powers off when PC is idle Powers off when PC is in safe mode Powers off when PC is in BIOS Powers off when PC is booted through a Windows installation USB Replaced the motherboard battery several times Replaced the 650W PSU with a 750W PSU Replaced the RAM Swapped the RAM between slots Re-applied thermal paste to the CPU Checked if the motherboard touches the case Nothing is overclocked PC Specs PC specs: OS: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 RAM: klingston 1333MHz 4GB stick CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955 Mobo: Gigabyte 88GMA-UD2H rev 2.2 Motherboard battery: CR2032 3v HDD: 500GB Seagate ST3500418AS ATA Device Graphics: ATI/AMD Radeon HD 6870 Very Long version Around 10 months ago I built a brand new gaming PC. Around 6 months ago it's time setting in windows started resetting to the year 2010. I swapped the Motherboard battery for a new one of the exact same size and shape and voltage, and the problems disappeared...for around 2 weeks. Then the same problem happened again, time gets reset, I swapped the battery again, and the problem was gone for good and everything was great for about 3 months.. then another problem started happening, the PC started to power off suddenly and without warning at completely random times, sometimes the PC works for and hour, sometimes 5 minutes. So I read on the forums that it might be either the PSU or the motherboard Battery or RAM or HDD or the Graphics card or the CPU or the motherboard or the drivers or a Virus or Grounding issues, or something short circuiting, basically it can be anything... I spent some days researching, and decided to remove the possibility of a virus. I reset the CMOS, cleared all BIOS settings and reinstalled windows 7 after a full format of the HDD, but the random power off kept happening. I then disabled the restart on error option in windows and looked at the event log for error events, but they did not help me figure out the problem. Network list service depends on network location awareness the dependency group failed to start Source Kernel Power Event 41 Task Category 63 Source Disk Event ID 11 Task Category None The driver detected a controller error on device disk I took apart the PC, every little piece, re-applied some expensive thermal paste to the CPU, and double checked that none of the pieces are touching the PC case. The problem was gone, the PC no longer powered off randomly I re-attached the graphics card and all was good for 4 months... then the power off problem appeared again, but was happening at high intervals, the PC would shutdown once in 2 days on average, at random points in time, sometimes when it's idle all day long, sometimes when it's running CRYSIS 2. I checked the CPU temperature, because I know that AMD CPU's have a built in protection mechanism that switches off the PC if the CPU gets too hot, and the Temp was 50C system temp, and 45C CPU after running the PC all day long (I did not do tests to see if there are any temperature spikes, don't know how to do them) Originally the PSU that powered the PC was 650Watts and had one 4 pin cable to power the CPU, I replaced it with a new 750Watts PSU which has two 4 pin cables for the CPU, but the problem remained. I removed the graphics card and let the motherboard use the built in one, but the PC kept suddenly powering off at random times. I took apart the PC completely again, and re-applied thermal paste to the CPU, added lots of insulation, and checked for any type of short-circuit possibility again and again, but the problem remained. The problem was like that for some months. I replaced the Battery a couple of times over the time, changed lots of options in windows, and tried everything I could, but it kept powering off, so I stopped using the PC as much as I used to, just living with the random power offs from time to time, until a couple of days ago, when the power off happens almost immediately after powering on the PC. I replaced the RAM with a brand new one, but that did not help. Took apart the PC again, checked for anything anywhere that might cause it, found some small scratches on the very edge of the motherboard to the left of the PCI express x16 slot. This might cause the problem, I thought, but the scratch looks very superficial, not deep at all, and if the scratch did harm the motherboard, wouldn't it cause it to not start at all? And why did it start to power off a while ago, and then suddenly stop powering off? The scratches could not have vanished??? did chkdsk \d but it powered off when it was at 75% I removed the hard disks, the graphics card, while I fiddled with the BIOS settings, and suddenly the PC shut down while I was looking at the BIOS version. This makes me realize, it is not caused by: HDD, Windows, Drivers or the Graphics card I cleared the CMOS again, updated the BIOS from F5 to F6f beta, but that did not help, it might even seem that the PC powers off even sooner. The shutdown even happened to me while I booted through a windows 7 installation USB and was in the repair console. I removed one of the cables powering the CPU, now only one 4pin cable powers it, and it worked for 30mins after doing that, which makes me think that it's the CPU overheating, and because it gets less power, it overheats slower? The things that I am still considering: CPU overheating (does not seem to overheat, maybe false readings?) Motherboard short circuiting (faulty motherboard?) I desperately need some advice in what is faulty, is it a faulty Motherboard or an overheating CPU? or maybe something else? I have been breaking my head over this problem over a span of 6 months. I'm not sure if this is a good place to ask this question, if it is not, then tell me where I can get some experienced help. The power off does not seem like it is affected by Prime95 at all Makes me wonder if it's a CPU or Motherboard issue at all. Q. I had similar random/intermittent problems with my old board. It gave one of a few different symptoms: keyboard and/or mouse would die and/or the RAM wouldn't work and/or it would shut down. It was in bad shape. One problems was that my old PSU had literally burned the connector on it (browned around the pins), another was that a broken lead inside the layers of the PCB would work sometimes if it happened to be hot or if I bent the board—by jamming a hunk of wood behind it. I managed to keep the board alive for several years, but eventually nothing I did would make it work correctly anymore. – Synetech A. I will try that as the last resort, ok? ;) Q. Have you tried a different power cord, surge protector, outlet (on a different circuit). Q. With one PC I had a short curcuit. The power button on the front plate had its cables soldered, but not isolated, and the contacts were very close to the metal case. A heavier touch was enough to cause a shutdown. The PC's vibration could be enough – ott-- A. yes, it seems to switch off with even the lightest touch, I switched on the PC, then pulled out the front panel power cable that connects to the motherboard so the power button does not work anymore, after 5 mins of working like that, with the power button completely disconnected, just sitting idle, the PC powered off again, I don't think it's the power button. Q. I wonder if you dare to operate components without the case, that is remove motherboard, power, disk ( just put the motherboard on a wooden desk). • Cannot Resolve Host Or Access Website Through Router

  This is weird. I am on Windows XP with Edimax BR 6204Wg. I have 3 devices - 2 laptops and 1 smartphone. 1st laptop and smartphone are connected through WiFi to router and 2nd laptop is connected through LAN to router. Before firmware upgrade i did not try to access website but after firmware upgrade to latest version: http://www.edimax.eu/en/support_detail.php?pd_id=11&pl1_id=3#02 i had problems resolving host, pinging, tracerting and accessing website. Sometimes ping and tracert work but i cannot access website and sometimes i can access website but ping and tracert do not work. Weird? I downgraded to previous version and no changes. If i can no longer access that website through Internet Explorer, i can access it in Firefox. I tried deleting cookies, clearing cache and that seem not make difference. Switching LAN port did not make difference. When i disconnect router and connect laptop through LAN to internet modem, everything is normal. I tried resetting router, resetting to factory default settings and all did not help. At the moment i can access website on laptop connected through LAN from Firefox and Internet Explorer, but on my smartphone i can access website only with Opera but not with built-in browser and Skyfire. UPDATE: I just could only access with Internet Explorer but not with other browsers on my PC. Minutes later i could access with all browsers. But on smartphone i could only access with Opera and not with other browsers. I am confused. I also determined that sometimes i can access and sometimes can't. What is also weird is that when ping and tracert cannot resolve host, i still am able to access website.

The reason is that we want to run "SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(LOCALSERVER, '...')" -like statements on the server. What are the possible disadvantages of enabling server option "data access" (alias sys.servers.is_data_access_enabled) for the local server (sys.servers.server_id = 0)? (There must be a reason for MS setting this option to disabled by default...) • Limit copssh users to home directory Windows 7

  Hello all- I have found these two sites below: CopSSH SFTP -- limit users access to their home directory only and http://blogs.windowsnetworking.com/wnadmin/2006/11/07/copssh-restricting-users-access/ as well as the Copssh website, but upon completion they do not seem to work. I have copssh installed and I have a separate Windows account "sftpuser" created that is used to connect. The connection works just fine, but I want to limit that user to just their home directory and sub folders. I have 3 hard drives, the C:, a W: and an S: and I want the FTP account to only be able to access the W: drive and its contents (the root of the W: drive is the FTP home directory). Right now "sftpuser" can access all folders, including jump drives to C:, and S:. The linked tutorials do not seem to work, because it seems when I create a group "ftpusersgroup" and add "sftpuser" to the group, and then deny "ftpusersgroup" access to the C: drive, the service breaks and I can no longer login. I have undone everything and am ready to start fresh. Does anyone know how to do this, or is there a better tutorial that someone has or has found? I hope this makes sense. • Connecting jconsole using SOCKS to Amazon EC2

  I'm trying to use jconsole to view stats on an EC2 instance by using a socks proxy created by SSH. I've tried the various scripts mentioned in the links below but to no avail: http://simplygenius.com/2010/08/jconsole-via-socks-ssh-tunnel.html http://gabrielcain.com/blog/2010/11/02/using-ssh-proxying-to-connect-jconsole-to-remote-cassandra-instances/ I'm running ssh -f -ND 8123 myuser@mymachine and verified that at least Firefox goes through it as a proxy. I then run jconsole -J-DsocksProxyHost=localhost -J-DsocksProxyPort=8123 service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/rmi://ec2-XX-XX-XXX-XXX.compute-1.amazonaws.com:8080/jmxrmi I run netstat -n on my EC2 instance and I see a connection created by my machine. However, the connection eventually disappears and I get a 'channel 2: open failed: connect failed: Operation timed out' from my ssh tunnel. I've opened the jmx port through the security group and I've checked the port on the EC2 instance to make sure it's open (by telnet-ing to it). I'm not sure where to look next. Are there some properties in sshd_config or ssh_config I need to enable for tunneling? Or anything in Mac OS X? I feel like a serious noob but sys administration is really not my strong point. I've spent several hours and can't get this to work.

• Which events specifically cause Windows 2008 to mark a SAN volume offline?

  I am searching for specific criteria/events that will cause Windows 2008 to mark a SAN volume as offline in disk management, even though it is connected to that SAN volume via FC or iSCSI. Microsoft states that "A dynamic disk may become Offline if it is corrupted or intermittently unavailable. A dynamic disk may also become Offline if you attempt to import a foreign (dynamic) disk and the import fails. An error icon appears on the Offline disk. Only dynamic disks display the Missing or Offline status." I am specifically wondering if, on the SAN, changing the path to the disk (such as the disk being presented to the host via a different iSCSI target IQN or a different LUN #) would cause a volume to be offlined in disk management. Thanks! Edit: I have already found two reasons why a disk might be set offline, disk signature collisions and the SAN disk policy.   I am going to www.facebook.com, but the site that appears is totally different. This occurs on Chrome 6+, IE9, and FF 3+. What could be happening? Is this a security risk? • SQL 2008 R2 replication error: The process could not connect to Distributor

  I have two servers running SQL 2008 R2 Standard, each with an instance named "MAIN". I have a small test database on my primary server (one table, 13 rows) that I want to replicate to a second server as a proof-of-concept for some larger databases that I want to replicate. I set up the primary server to be a publisher and distributor, and set the database to do transactional replication. I copied the data to the second server via a backup/restore, not via a snapshot (which I'll have to do with the larger databases due to database size and limited bandwidth). I followed the instructions here: http://gnawgnu.blogspot.com/2009/11/sql-2008-transactional-replication-and.html Now on the subscriber, I go under Replication / Local Subscriptions / Right click / Properties on my subscription to the DB. The status of the last synchronization shows a status of: "The process could not connect to Distributor 'PRIMARYSERVER\MAIN'." Data IS replicating from the primary to the secondary. Any record I add on the primary shows up on the secondary server within seconds. Is the Distributor part of the Snapshot system that I'm not using, or is it part of the transaction replication stuff? • DHCPD (Slackware) - Disabling auto-generation of gateway as DNS server

  Good day, I am using a Linux workstation on Slackware 13.37. One "problem" I have had to deal with ever since 11.0 is the following: DNS servers are queried and determined at startup by DHCP daemon (DHCPD) This is invoked at startup by a script located at /etc/rc.d/rc.dhcpd My DNS servers for my ISP are resolved correctly, and are stored in a list located at /etc/resolv.conf However, the one annoying problem is that my gateway IP (ie: 192.168.1.1) is always automatically put at the top of the list in resolv.conf, meaning I have to always wait for a timeout before a valid DNS server is used to resolve an address (ie: timeout on 192.168.1.1 because it is not actually a DNS server, then DHCP uses the next server in the list). I could lower my DNS resolution timeout so the gateway query times out quicker, but that's not what I want, as I don't want to degrade the abilities of legitimate DNS servers. What I would like to do is change how DHCPD operates so that it does NOT put my gateway IP address at the beginning of this list. I've searched via "man dhcpd", etc, and haven't found the exact answer yet. Any help on this issue is appreciated. Thank you all in advance for your time and assistance.

• Change the background color of selected text in Google Docs to increase readability [migrated]

  How can I override or change the background color of text selected in Google Docs? It is difficult for me to see the difference and I would like to increase the contrast or difference. After Google restyled Google Docs last year (or earlier this year), I've been unable to see selected text. It's possible this is a visual deficiency with my eyes. In Google Docs, under both Google Chrome (17.0.963.83 (Official Build 127885) m) and Firefox (11.0), when I select text inside a Google Doc, the selected text has a background of color #d6e0f5. Compare this to the default browser background color of #2f65c0. (I determined the color of the selected text background by taking a screenshot and using the color picker tool in Photoshop). I've tested this using a brand new Firefox profile as well as google chrome profile. Here's a section of a screenshot showing the selected text : I've tried using a userscript to override the CSS to go back to the default text selection color using the "Stylish" plugin with this css : ::selection { background:#2f65c0; color:#ffffff; } ::-moz-selection { background:#2f65c0; color:#ffffff; } ::-webkit-selection { background:#2f65c0; color:#ffffff; } This code works on other sites, but I'm unable to get it to work on Google Docs. (I tested on other sites but applying the userscript to a different domain and using bright yellow instead of the default dark blue #2f65c0.) When you use Google Docs, do you have the same color background for selected text or something different? (To test this, browse to docs.google.com , create a document, type text into the document, select the text with the mouse by dragging over it, take a screenshot, load the screenshot up in an image editor and determine the background color of the selected text.) This color differential (between light blue #d6e0f5 and white #fffff) may be easy to see for others and the problem lies with my eyes.

• How do I set the encoding statement in the XML declaration when performing an XSL transformation usi

  I wrote a simple package installer in WinBatch that needs to update an XML file with information about the package contents. My first stab at it involved loading the file with Msxml2.DOMDocument, adding nodes and data as required, then saving the data back to disk. This worked well enough, except that it would not create tab and CR/LF whitespace in the new data. The solution I came up with was writing an XSL stylesheet that would recreate the XML file with whitespace added back in. I'm doing this by: loading the XSL file into an Msxml2.FreeThreadedDOMDocument object setting that object as the stylesheet property of an Msxml2.XSLTemplate object creating an XSL processor via Msxml2.XSLTemplate.createProcessor() setting my original Msxml2.DOMDocument as the input property of the XSL processor Calling transform() method of the XSL processor, and saving the output to a file. This works as for as reformatting the XML file with tabs and carriage returns, but my XML declaration comes out either as <?xml version="1.0"?> or <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?> depending on whether I used Msxml2.*.6.0 or Msxml2.* objects (a fall back if the system doesn't have 6.0). If the encoding is set to UTF-16, Msxml12.DOMDocument complains about trying to convert UTF-16 to 1-byte encoding the next time I run my package installer. I've tried creating and adding an XML declaration using both createProcessingInstruction() to both the XML and XSL DOM objects, but neither one seems to affect the output of the XSLTemplate processor. I've also set encoding to UTF-8 in the <xsl:output/> tag in my XSL file. • How to change Jquery UI Slider handle

  I want to modify the stock JQuery UI slider so that the handle has a arrow on it rather than being a square. i.e. I want to use a custom image as the handle. I'm wondering: Do I need a plugin for JQuery to recognise the handle option? (it is not documented in http://docs.jquery.com/UI/Slider). Or perhaps it only worked in an old version of JQuery?
