  • Make two servers talk to each other

    I have application written in GWT and hosted on Google AppEngine/Java. In this application user will have an option to upload video/audio/text file to the server. Those files could be big, up to 1gb or so and because GAE/J does not support large file I have to use another server to store those files. This would be easy to implement if there was no cross-domain security feature in browsers. So, what I'm thinking is to make GAE Server talk to my server (Glassfish or any other java servers if needed) to tell url to the file and if possible send status of uploaded file (how many percent was uploaded) so I can show status on clients screen. Here is what I'm thinking to do. When user loads GWT page that is stored on GAE/J he/she will upload file to my server, then my server will send response back to GAE and GAE will send response to the client. If this scenario is possible what would be the best way to implement GAE to Glassfish conversation?

  • Finding out whether a DirectInput device supports XInput (with mingw/gcc)

    I'm working on an input system, wrapping DirectInput and XInput. Currently XInput devices are enumerated twice, once as XInput and once as DirectInput (since they support both). How can I find out if a given DirectInput device also supports XInput? There is this MSDN page on the topic, but it requires wbemidl.h and wmsstd.h which aren't available in mingw/gcc (and for some reason I want to avoid msvc - probably by habit). I don't think blacklisting device names/guids is a good solution, but is there a better one? Thanks.

    I'm using acegi 0.5.2 and enabled OpenID support. I would like to know how to accesss the URL (or username) returned by a provider (i.e. Google, Yahoo!).   • How do I dynamically tell a .NET MVC application which datasource to point to?

    I'm beginning a port of an existing ColdFusion application to .NET MVC and one of the first issues I'm running into is that in ColdFusion we use the fact that you can define multiple datasources and access them in a dynamic way so that a particular user can be pointed at a particular database. To give an example, I might have two databases, Foo and Bar which each have a table called Locations which store locations particular to that database. The databases are guaranteed to have the same tables, so that's not a concern. In ColdFusion, you can easily dynamically point a user towards a particular datasource because it's just a string which is configured via the ColdFusion administrator (or you could programatically modify an XML file). So the question is how to do this in .NET? And specifically, I think I'd really like to use the Entity framework to leverage the ORM support it'll offer to perform operations on the data in the database, but I'm not sure how to do that (hopefully it's possible). Any thoughts?

    Hello, We are soon to get VS2010 and according to the link below, Microsoft do not support VS2010 on XP x64. http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us/products/2010-editions/professional/system-requirements Does anyone have XP 64bit running VS2010? I am not interested in 64bit version of VS (I am wanting to install a 32bit version of VS2010 professional on a 64 bit XP machine). I am aware that XP will require SP3. Any warnings? Horror stories? Advice?

  • Wireless Connected But No Internet Connection (Ubuntu 12.04)

    I am using same network for 2 days and everything was normal. However, today even though it shows me as connected to the network, I do not have internet connection. If I use ethernet cable instead of wireless, I am still able to connect to the internet. Also my friends are able to connect to the wireless network and they can get internet connection. I did not update or install anything since yesterday. Therefore I do not have any idea why it is happening.     We have a Makefile which runs on a Windows 2003 machine and we are using mingw32-make for it. Since the Makefile has many include paths, it exceeds the buffer size of 8K that the cmd can handle [Ref - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830473/EN-US/due to which the compilation results in "input line too long" issue. I wanted to know the following - What would be the best way to optimize the Makefile as I have already removed unwanted compiler switches, include paths etc. Is there any way we can put all the INCLUDE paths in one .txt file and import it in the Makefile.I could not find any mingw32 documentation for the same. Although Linux doesn't use hardware context switches, it is nonetheless forced to set up a TSS for each distinct CPU in the system. I am wondering: Why doesn't Linux use the hardware support for context switch? Isn't the hardware approach much faster than the software approach?     I'm working on an application that needs to display a context menu on screen in various scenarios. In the function I'm writing, I don't have access to any NSWindows or NSViews. I'd like to use popUpMenuPositioningItem:atLocation:inView as this function works perfectly for me in 10.6. However, we have a requirement to support 10.5, so this function isn't available to me. The feature I'm most interested in, as stated in the documentation is: If view is nil, the location is interpreted in the screen coordinate system. This allows you to pop up a menu disconnected from any window. Basically, I need to display the context menu given a location on screen, but without any associated view. Is there any way to achieve this on 10.5?

    I'm currently working on a project which needs to persist any kind of objects (of which implementation we don't have any control) so these objects could be recovered afterwards. We can't implement a ORM because we can't restrict the users of our library at development time. Our first alternative was to serialize it with the Java default serialization but we had a lot of trouble recovering the objects when the users started to pass different versions of the same object (attributes changed types, names, ...). We have tried with the XMLEncoder class (transforms an object into a XML), but we have found that there is a lack of functionality (doesn't support Enums for example). Finally, we also tried JAXB but this impose our users to annotate their classes. Any good alternative?

    Hey guys. I am wondering what the best ways to save enums into a database is. I know there are name() and valueOf() methods to make it into a String back. But are there any other (flexible) options to store these values? Is there a smart way to make them into unique numbers (ordinal() is not safe to use)? Any comments and suggestions would be helpful :) Update: Thanks for all awesome and fast answers! It was as I suspected. However a note to 'toolkit'; That is one way. The problem is that I would have to add the same methods with each enum type i create.     Hi, I am creating a lightweight, single-file database administration tool and I would like to bundle some small icons with it. What is the best way to embed images in a HTML/PHP file? I know a method using PHP where I would call the same file with a GET parameter that would output hardcoded binary data with the correct header, but that seems a bit complicated. Can I use something to pass the image directly in a CSS background-image declaration? This would allow me to utilize the CSS sprite technique. Browser support isn't an issue here, so more exotic methods are welcome also. EDIT Does someone have a link/example to how to generate Data URL's properly with PHP? I'd figure echo 'data:image/png;base64,'.base64_encode(file_get_contents('image.png')) would suffice but I could be wrong.

    I'm working on a WPF application, and I'm structuring it using the MVVM pattern. Initially I had an idea that the ViewModels should be reusable, but now I'm not too sure anymore. Should I be able to reuse my ViewModels if I need similar functionality for a WinForms application? Silverlight doesn't support all things WPF does - should I be able to reuse for Silverlight applications? What if I want to make a Linux GUI for my application. Then I need the ViewModel to build in Mono - is this something I should strive for? And so on.. So; should one write ViewModel classes with one specific View in mind, or think of reusability?

  • Workaround iPhone's browser not honoring the <label> element

    Hi, Just ran into this recently and I thought it'd be helpful to share. The HTML <label> element is supported in a weird way by iPhone's (v3) browser. Try this: <input type="checkbox" id="chkTest" /><label for="chkTest">Click me!</label> Tapping the "Click me!" label has no effect, the checkbox is not checked. Lack of support in a touch device for <label> elements puzzled me and I tried to overcome this issue by using javascript. The surprise came when a I noticed a void javascript like the one below also did the trick: <input type="checkbox" id="chkTest" /><label for="chkTest" onclick="javascript:void(0);">Click me!</label> HTH Further info: Also works with an empty handler: onclick="" Disabling JavaScript inactivates again the label, even if using the empty handler.

  • Options for non-native form inputs for the web?

    I'm wondering if there are any good non-native form inputs for web development? I am currently using the built in <input> controls. They work just fine, but for my application they are too big (especially on OS X). I am wondering if there are any libraries that I can drop in as replacements. I am especially interested in ones that: Are a close to native control behavior as possible. Support for tabbing, highlighting current textbox, pressing up/down in <select>, etc. Have something that replicates <select> Look good and are compact I am aware that you can use CSS for some styling, but it's pretty minimal and looks different depending on the browser.     ...what options are there now with .NET 4.0, in a way that does support NAT for the client side (i.e. client behind NAT). I would prefer to use something HTTP based, but that is a weak condition - I think mid term I will have some non http communication outside WCF anyway, so proxy traversal is something I could delay. Pre .NET 4.0 there was the issue that basically the server-client channel would be opened from the server, which made NAT something non-traversable. Polling is not acceptable - we talk time sensitive information here. So, what are my options now?

  • Using Base SAS to validate Windows Password

    We have a signon script that requires a Windows password in order to access and validate against the SAS metadata server. The problem is that if the windows password is changed, and the script is run a few without being updated, then the user gets locked out and has to call IT support for a password reset. What is the simplest way of using Base SAS to validate a windows password? ie to enable a warning to the user if the password provided is not valid... EDIT: The concern is not whether or not this SHOULD be done, only HOW it could be done!

  • WCF: limit number of calls per hour - per user

    Hi guys, I've got a WCF service (basicHttpBinding, basic authentication, IIS 6.0) on which I want to restrict the number of calls per hour - on user basis. For example, max 1000 calls per user, per hour (a la Google Maps, etc). I also want to implement some sort of subscription mechanism, so that users can upgrade their call-limit across various 'price plans'. I know that I could achieve this with a custom Inspector, backed by a DB containing some sort of 'subscription' table and a counter, but I'd like to avoid reinventing the wheel. Does anyone have experience doing this? Are there 3rd party projects/libraries that support this out of the box? Thanks. Eric

  • Representing Sparse Data in PostgreSQL

    What's the best way to represent a sparse data matrix in PostgreSQL? The two obvious methods I see are: Store data in a single a table with a separate column for every conceivable feature (potentially millions), but with a default value of NULL for unused features. This is conceptually very simple, but I know that with most RDMS implementations, that this is typically very inefficient, since the NULL values ususually takes up some space. However, I read an article (can't find its link unfortunately) that claimed PG doesn't take up data for NULL values, making it better suited for storing sparse data. Create separate "row" and "column" tables, as well as an intermediate table to link them and store the value for the column at that row. I believe this is the more traditional RDMS solution, but there's more complexity and overhead associated with it. I also found PostgreDynamic, which claims to better support sparse data, but I don't want to switch my entire database server to a PG fork just for this feature. Are there any other solutions? Which one should I use?

  • Xcode, changing applications subfolder?

    Hi have noticed today whilst writing a simple iPhone app that Xcode sometimes starts a new folder in applications, whilst your still working on the same app. /Users/Fuzzygoat/Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/User/Applications/4E5EF4F0-F410-46A6-888C-0D23BB97D2DC Does anyone know what causes Xcode to swap to a new app folder (i.e. the one named "4E5EF4F0-F410-46A6-888C-0D23BB97D2DC") EDIT_001: One thing I have noticed is that I have been doing a lot of quitting an application and restarting to check a set of archive methods, and that does tend to confuse it sometimes. A couple of times it has not found saved data, I guess this is just a side effect of constantly running the simulator over and over via Xcode. Things seem to go just fine if I test on the Simulator without Xcode, for a start the folder keeps the same name. NB: I am using NSSearchPathForDirectoriesInDomains to get the documents folder each time. gary
