  • Design question for WinForms (C#) app, using Entity Framework

    I am planning on writing a small home budget application for myself, as a learning excercise. I have built my database (SQL Server), and written a small console application to interact with it, and test out scenarios on my database. Once I am happy, my next step would be to start building the application - but I am already wondering what the best/standard design would be. I am palnning on using Entity Framework for handling my database entities... then linq to sql/objects for getting the data, all running under a WinForms (for now) application. My plan (I've never used EF... and most of my development background is Web apps) is to have my database... with Entity Framework in it's own project.. which has the connection to the database. This project would expose methods such as 'GetAccount()', 'GetAccount(int accountId)' etc. I'd then have a service project that references my EF project. And on top of that, my GUI project, which makes the calls to my service project. But I am stuck. Lets say I have a screen that displays a list of Account types (Debit, Credit, Loan...). Once I have selected one, the next drop down shows a list of accounts I have that suite that account type. So, my OnChange event on my DropDown on the account type control will make a call to the serviceLayer project, 'GetAccountTypes()', and I would expect back a List< of Account Types. However, the AccountType object ... what is that? That can't be the AccountType object from my EF project, as my GUI project doesn't have reference to it. Would I have to have some sort of Shared Library, shared between my GUI and my Service project, with a custom built AccountType object? The GUI can then expect back a list of these. So my service layer would have a method: public List<AccountType> GetAccountTypes() That would then make a call to a custom method in my EF project, which would probably be the same as the above method, except, it returns an list of EF.Data.AccountType (The Entity Framework generated Account Type object). The method would then have the linq code to get the data as I want it. Then my service layer will get that object, and transform it unto my custom AccountType object, and return it to the GUI. Does that sound at all like a good plan?

  • SVN Question regarding branching and third party vendor branching

    Hi, We are developing an application which consists of: a source code base given to us by a partner infrequently. This is a somewhat working code, "final" version of something. They have their own release cycle and version tracking. on the code base above we make our changes. These can be either bugfixes or development of new features. Till now, we managed to create some code mayhem, as a result we would like to put all this in a SVN repository. I would like to ask you what you think is the best practice for this to happen with the less pain. The followings are our things that we consider important: We would like to track our bugfixes/changes since we cannot send back bugfixes to our software vendor, but we can report a bug (and they might or might not fix it). All we develop on their code remains "in-house" they are not interested in our changes. As long as we don't get a new codebase from the vendor, we consider their latest version to be the stable one we are working on. This might be branched down further, but the result is always a stable trunk, the build is done based on this "stable" trunk. When the vendor releases a new version we would like to merge our "stable" trunk (which contains a lot of changes) with their changes, thus creating a new "stable" trunk. For each version we deploy (to clients) we should be able later to fix bugs only on that version, for clients who have installed our system using that specific version There are more developers working on the codebase...     I have a banner that rotates a series of three images. The active one has a display:block, while the inactive have display:none. I'm trying to match the class for the active image with an tag so that I can add an "active" class to the a tag. Having some trouble writing that function. It's adding all of the classes for each of the img elements, regardless of whether they're being displayed or not... I would expect the compiler to see that the second argument will be unboxed one way or the other, and judge what method must be invoked depending on the third argument. Why does not this happen? What is the rationale?

    I've a few lines of code within a project, that I can't see the value of... buffer[i] = (currentByte & 0x7F) | (currentByte & 0x80); It reads the filebuffer from a file, stored as bytes, and then transfers then to buffer[i] as shown, but I can't understand what the overall purpose is, any ideas?     Hi, I read this about git branch: http://book.git-scm.com/3_basic_branching_and_merging.html so I follow it and create 1 branch : experimental And I 1. switch to experimental branch (git checkout experimental) 2. make a bunch of changes 3. commit it (git commit -a) 4. switch to master branch (git checkout master) 5. make some changes and commit there 6. switch back to experimental (git checkout experimental) 7. merge master change to experimental (git merge master) 8. there are some conflicts but after I resolve them, I did 'git add myfile' And now i am stuck, I can't move back to master when I do $ git checkout master error: Entry 'res/layout/my_item.xml' would be overwritten by merge. Cannot merge. and I did: $ git rebase --abort No rebase in progress? and I did : $ git add res/layout/socialhub_list_item.xml $ git checkout master error: Entry 'res/layout/my_item.xml' would be overwritten by merge. Cannot merge. What can I do so that I can go back to my master branch? Thank you.

    I've been doing things like this in the clean method: if self.cleaned_data['type'].organized_by != self.cleaned_data['organized_by']: raise forms.ValidationError('The type and organization do not match.') if self.cleaned_data['start'] > self.cleaned_data['end']: raise forms.ValidationError('The start date cannot be later than the end date.') But then that means that the form can only raise one of these errors at a time. Is there a way for the form to raise both of these errors? EDIT #1: Any solutions for the above are great, but would love something that would also work in a scenario like: if self.cleaned_data['type'].organized_by != self.cleaned_data['organized_by']: raise forms.ValidationError('The type and organization do not match.') if self.cleaned_data['start'] > self.cleaned_data['end']: raise forms.ValidationError('The start date cannot be later than the end date.') super(FooAddForm, self).clean() Where FooAddForm is a ModelForm and has unique constraints that might also cause errors.     Hello Guys, First I want to say that I'm really new to neural networks and I don't understand it very good ;) I've made my first C# implementation of the backpropagation neural network. I've tested it using XOR and it looks it work. Now I would like change my implementation to use resilient backpropagation (Rprop - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rprop). The definition says: "Rprop takes into account only the sign of the partial derivative over all patterns (not the magnitude), and acts independently on each "weight". Could somebody tell me what partial derivative over all patterns is? And how should I compute this partial derivative for a neuron in hidden layer.     I used this side to create my demo application http://windowsclient.net/learn/video.aspx?v=314683 The site was very useful in getting my started and in their example, they created a file called EmployeeRepository.cs which appears to be the source for the data. In their example, the data was hard-wired in code. So I'm trying to learn how to get the data from a data source (like a DB). In my specific case, I want to get the data from a Microsoft Access DB.     I have a controller without any related model. This controller is to span some informations from various models. I have lots of actions there, which define certain views on the page. What would be the best way to organize routes for this controller. What I would like is to have /dashboard/something point to any action in the dashboard controller. Not actions like new/edit but arbitrary (showstats, etc). With trail and error I made something like this: map.dashboard 'dashboard/:action', :controller => 'dashboard', :action => :action Now it is possible to access those url using helper: dashboard_url('actionname') This approch seems to be working ok, but is this the way to go? I am not quite sure understand, how are the helper method names generated. How to generate same helper names as in basic controllers "action_controller_url" ? That would be more generic and made the code more consistent. Thanks in advance.
