• Prism for Silverlight: How to maintain views in a specific order inside a region.

  Hi I am creating sort of a "Navigation panel" (which is actually an ItemControl) for SL and using Regions to allow each module to add his link to the panel. Problem is that modules loading is inconsistent and thus order of links in the panel can change according to modules loading order. Restricting the modules order is out of the question. Other feasible option is the order the region's Views Collection that is binded to the ItemControl, the problem is that ViewCollection is very limited, so ordering it is pretty hard. Did I miss an option, do you have an idea? Thanks Ariel

• Wordpress parses wp_posts.post_content before rendering?

  I noticed that when I call the the_post() or the_content() function from my wordpress template, it automatically parses the database data to replace new lines with <br/>, wraps the text with <p> tags etc...There's probably some kind of "format" function within the_post() or the_content(). I wrote a query to directly get posts from the wp_posts. I then print it out like <?php $results = $wp->get_results($sql) foreach($results as $row) echo $row->post_content; ?> Clearly, this data is not parsed by wordpress' "format" function. What is the proper way to output this content such that it undergoes the same "formatting" functions as the_post() or the_content()?

• LINQ, creating unique collection of a collection

  I have class Vertex and a class Edge (Edge holds 2 properties - Vertex Source and Vertex Target); Edges and Vertexes are collected into lists Some example: A-->B // edge from vertex A to B B-->C // edge from vertex B to C C-->A // edge from vertex C to A A-->C // edge from vertex A to C -- this is two way edge So I would like to make IDictionary<Edge, bool> which would hold edges (A--B and B--A would be like 1), and bool - if it is two way or no. I need it because when I draw them now, it draws 2 arrows under one another. I would better make 1 arrow. So I'm pretty stuck right here... May anybody help me a bit ?

• Require help with program for edutainment game

  I am working on a factorisation problem and for small numbers it is working well. I've been able to calculate the factors (getting the answers from Wolfram Alpha) for small numbers, like the one on the Wikipedia page (5959). Along with the Wikipedia page I have been following this guide. Once again, as my Math knowledge is pretty poor I cannot follow what I need to do next. EDIT: It finally works! I'll post the working code up here once I've got it fully working so that others in my predicament can learn from it.

• Best practice in Rails when editing scaffold made pages

  I have a best practice question. I have two classes, company and category. They have a many-to-many relationship. When clicking a category I shall go to a page showing all companies with the chosen category. Pretty straight forward. My question is: Should I list all the companies on the companies/index.html.erb after filtering the companies in the controller? or Should I list all the companies on the categories/show.html.erb page? or Should I do a completely new page, since it doesn't really fit into any of the two above? Do you generally make a new page when your goal doesn't fit the scaffold made pages or do you use them quite freely? I am working/learning alone with rails, so there are a lot of best practice questions popping up all the time. Cheers Carl

• How to make sure no scripts except those under my own domain, can include the db connection file?

  I would like to ensure that any scripts that are trying to "include" my database connection file are located under my own domain. I don't want a hacker to include the database connection file to their malicious script and gain access to my database that way. My connection file's name is pretty easy to guess, it's called "connect.php". So without renaming it and taking the security through obscurity route, how can I protect it by making sure all connection requests are made by scripts residing under my own domain name? How can this be checked using PHP?

  I have code similar to the following running in a script: try: s = ftplib.FTP('xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx','username','password') except: print ('Could not contact FTP serer') sys.exit() IF the FTP site is inaccessible, the script almost seems to 'hang' ... It is taking about 75 seconds on average before sys.exit() appears to be called... I know the 75 seconds is probably very subjective, and dependent on the system this runs on...but is there a way to have python just try this once, and if unsucessful, to exit immediately? The platform I am using for this is Mac OS X 10.5/python 2.5.1.

  Hi I have a app that starts with a empty UITableViewController, which is pretty .. well, emtpy. Now I was wondering if I could hint the user by painting something else on the view, like pointing an arrow to the plus button and say something like "press here to add something new" I'll guess I have to do this in the viewDidLoad method, where I also init my NSFetchedResultsController, so I actually know if there are any objects in my list. I never put controls on the screen by code so I am not sure where to start and where to put em on. will that be the [self view] ? Thanks

• Is there a way to set up a Linux pipe to non-buffering or line-buffering?

  My program is controlling an external application on Linux, passing in input commands via a pipe to the external applications stdin, and reading output result via a pipe from the external applications stdout. The problem is that writes to pipes are buffered by block, and not by line, and therefore delays occur before my app receives data output by the external application. The external application cannot be altered to add explicit fflush() calls. When I set the external application to /bin/cat -n (it echoes back the input, with line numbers added), it works correctly, it seems, cat flushes after each line. The only way to force the external application to flush, is sending exit command to it; as it receives the command, it flushes, and all the answers appears on the stdout, just before exiting. I'm pretty sure, that Unix pipes are appropiate solution for that kind of interprocess communication (pseudo server-client), but maybe I'm wrong.   Whenever I use print_r or var_dump they come out all sloppy and in one line instead of formatted like I see so many people and the actual php.net site being able to achieve. What do I do to get them like this - Array ( [a] => apple [b] => banana [c] => Array ( [0] => x [1] => y [2] => z ) ) Instead of this Array([a] => apple [b] => banana [c] => Array ( [0] => x [1] => y [2] => z )) (Pretty sure it comes out even messier than that I was just deleting whitespace by hand.)

  hi all, i have this situation: i have to build a menu with datasource from the db, because i have to filter them among the user that is loged in. i have tried building a menu using repeater, and all this works fine till i realized that i wanted the menu with more than two levels. i have also tried with treeview, but i really don't want this solution (problem with the style and the treeview doesn't have a pretty view). • C++ performance, optimizing compiler, empty function in .cpp

  I've a very basic class, name it Basic, used in nearly all other files in a bigger project. In some cases, there needs to be debug output, but in release mode, this should not be enabled and be a NOOP. Currently there is a define in the header, which switches a makro on or off, depending on the setting. So this is definetely a NOOP, when switched off. I'm wondering, if I have the following code, if a compiler (MSVS / gcc) is able to optimize out the function call, so that it is again a NOOP. • How do I convince Eclipse to show javadoc documentation under Ubuntu 9.04 for openjdk?

  I'm having a pretty hard time with this! I have installed the java documentation at: file:///usr/share/doc/openjdk-6-jre/api/index.html And loading that file up does show me all the documentation. However, I would like to browse it directly from within eclipse and see the documentation when I hover over a class. For example, when I hover over "javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest", I would like to see the documentation for it. All I get is: Note: This element has no attached source and the Javadoc could not be found in the attached Javadoc. Can anyone help correct my dev environment?

• Python text file processing speed issues

  Hi all, I'm having a problem with processing a largeish file in Python. All I'm doing is f = gzip.open(pathToLog, 'r') for line in f: counter = counter + 1 if (counter % 1000000 == 0): print counter f.close This takes around 10m25s just to open the file, read the lines and increment this counter. In perl, dealing with the same file and doing quite a bit more (some regular expression stuff), the whole process takes around 1m17s. I've tried just uncompressing the file and dealing with it using open instead of gzip.open, but that made a very small difference to the overall time.

  Basically, I am trying to gather the IDs of every element with a specific class and place those IDs into an array. • .save puts NULL in user_id field in Ruby on Rails

  Here's the model file: class ProfileTag < ActiveRecord::Base def self.create_or_update(options = {}) id = options.delete(:id) record = find_by_id(id) || new record.id = id record.attributes = options puts "record.profile_id is" puts record.profile_id record.save! record end end This gives me the correct print out in my log. But it also says that there's a call to UPDATE that sets profile_id to NULL. I'm not sure I understand why the INSERT puts the value into profile_id properly, but then it sets it to NULL on an UPDATE. If you need more specifics, please let me know. I'm thinking that the save functionality does many things other than INSERTs into the database, but I don't know what I need to specify so that it will properly set profile_id.

• Spring 3.0 REST implementation or Jersey?

  Hi, SO! I'm currently trying to figure out which implementation of JSR-311 I'm going to recommend further up the food chain. I've pretty much narrowed it down to two options - Spring 3.0 with it's native support for REST - or use Sun's own Jersey (Restlets might also be an option). To me it doesn't seem to be much of a difference in the actual syntax, but there might be issues with performance that I haven't figured out yet. The service is meant to replace some heavy-duty EJB's and make a RESTful Webservice instead. The load is expected to be rather high, up in the 100k users per day (max) range, but will be seriously load balanced. Thanks for all your insights.

• Is there a major downside to using .htaccess files in your svn/git repository?

  If our .htaccess files are purely for mod rewrites, is there a security / development downside to committing .htaccess files alongside other files in your repository? For various reasons (our SEO optimisers like to add pretty urls as new promotions occur, etc) we need a fair few rewrite rules inside these files. Would I be better off pushing the routing into php-land and dealing with it there? Or is reading from a .htaccess via apache fine? The .htaccess files are not exposed via the web server, so that's not a security risk.

• Can you make a python script behave differently when imported than when run directly?

  I often have to write data parsing scripts, and I'd like to be able to run them in two different ways: as a module and as a standalone script. So, for example: def parseData(filename): # data parsing code here return data def HypotheticalCommandLineOnlyHappyMagicFunction(): print json.dumps(parseData(sys.argv[1]), indent=4) the idea here being that in another python script I can call import dataparser and have access to dataParser.parseData in my script, or on the command line I can just run python dataparser.py and it would run my HypotheticalCommandLineOnlyHappyMagicFunction and shunt the data as json to stdout. Is there a way to do this in python?

• Projects to learn Python

  I know this isn't a question about a specific snippet of code or anything, but here goes - I've been messing around with the idea of learning Python since I'm pretty bored with PHP (and web development in general), but I can't think of any projects to help me learn. I've already worked through some of Project Euler with Python, but it's getting old. I know the basics, and I want to write something more fun that will introduce me to new things in Python. Is there a cliche beginner project for Python? (for example, PHP's would be a blog or something similiar) Are there any common Python projects for newcomers, or any uncommon ones that you'd suggest? Any ideas would help.
