RESTful services architecture question

This is question more about service architecture strategy, we are building big web system based on rest services on back end. And we are currently trying to build some standard internal to follow while developing rest services. Some queries returns list of entities, for example lets consider we have image galleries retrieving service: /gell_all_galeries, returning next response: <galleries> <gallery> <id>some_gallery_id</id> <name>my photos</name> <photos> <photo> <id>123</id> <name>my photo</name> <location>http://mysite/photo/show/123</location> ...... <author> <id>some_id</id> <name>some name</name> ....... <author> </photo> <photo> ..... </photo> <photo> ..... </photo> <photo> ..... </photo> <photo> ..... </photo> </photos> </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> </galleries> As you see here, response quite big and heavy, and not always we need such deep info level. Usual solution is to use or http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atom elements for each gallery instead of full gallery data: <galleries> <gallery> <id>some_gallery_id</id> <link href="http://mysite/gallery/some_gallery_id"/> </gallery> <gallery> <id>second_gallery_id</id> <link href="http://mysite/gallery/second_gallery_id"/> </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> <gallery> .... </gallery> </galleries> The first question, is next: maybe instead we shouldn't even use and types, and just use generic and for all resources that return list objects: <list> <item><link href="http://mysite/gallery/some_gallery_id"/></item> <item><link href="http://mysite/gallery/other_gallery_id"/></item> <item>....</item> </list> And the second question, after user try to retrieve info about some concrete gallery, he'll use for example http://mysite/gallery/some_gallery_id link, what should he see as results? Need help with workflow in Alfresco

Hello SO community, I haven't had any luck getting help in the Alfresco forums, and I'm hoping for more here. We are building an application based on Alfresco and jBPM and I have defined a workflow, but I have either defined it wrong or am missing something or there are bugs in Alfresco integration with jBPM and I need help figuring out which and fixing it. Here is the problem: I have an advanced workflow and I am trying to launch it from JavaScript. However, when I go looking for the workflow in my task list it is not there, but it is in my completed task list. The default transition (the only transition) from the start node points at a task node which has four transitions. There are 8 tasks and 22 transitions in the workflow. When I use the workflow console to start the workflow and end the start task, it properly follows the default start node transition to the next task. The new task shows up in "show tasks" but does not show up in "show my tasks" (apparently because the task was marked completed for some reason, though it is not in the "end" node). Clearly the assignees are on the task object and not on the workflow object. I added the assignees aspect to the start-state task so that it could hold them (after I had a problem; initially they were not there) and possibly they are still sitting there, but the start-state has ended before I even get control back from the web script (not that it would help if it wasn't ended, I need it to be in "In Editing" as the start-state is only used to log that the workflow was started). It has always confused me that the properties that I need to set on each task need to be requested before the task is entered (when you choose a transition you must provide the data for the next task before you can actually move to the next task as you have to validate that you have all of the required data first and then signal the transition). However, the code to start the workflow is asynchronous and therefore does not return either the started workflow or the current task (which in my case would be "In Editing"). So, either way you cannot set variables such as bpm:assignees and bpm:dueDate. I wonder if this is the problem with the user task list. I'm setting the assignees in the property list, but maybe those assignees are going to the start-state task and are not getting passed to the "In Editing" task? Note that this is my first jBPM workflow, so please don't assume I know what I'm doing. If you see something that looks off, it probably is and I just don't know it. Hi I am new in Iphone i am developing application that is use database but i am face problem. In My application I am using table view. I am fetch the value from database in the table view this is done after that we also insert value throw text field in that table of database and display that value in table view.I am also use another table in database table name is Alootikki the value of table alootikki is display in other table view in application and user want to add this table alootikki value in first table of database and display that value in table view when we do this value is display only in the table view this is not write in the database table. when value is display and user want to add other data throw text field then only that add value is show first value is remove from table view. Storage model for various user setting and attributes in database?

I'm currently trying to upgrade a user management system for one web application. This web application is used to provide remote access to various networking equipment for educational purposes. All equipment is assigned to various pods, which users can book for periods of time. The current system is very simple - just 2 user types: administrators and students. All their security and other attributes are mostly hardcoded. I want to change this to something like the following model: user <-- (1..n)profile <--- (1..n) attributes. I.e. user can be assigned several profiles and each profile can have multiple attributes. At runtime all profiles and attributes are merged into single active profile. Some examples of attributes i'm planning to implement: EXPIRATION_DATE - single value, value type: date, specifies when user account will expire; ACCESS_POD - single value, value type: ref to object of Pod class, specifies which pod the user is allowed to book, user profile can have multiple such attributes with different values; TIME_QUOTA - single value, value type: integer, specifies maximum length of time for which student can reserve equipment. CREDIT_CHARGING - multi valued, specifies how much credits will be assigned to user over period of time. (Reservation of devices will cost credits, which will regenerate over time); Security permissions and user preferences can end up as profile or user attributes too: i.e CAN_CREATE_USERS, CAN_POST_NEWS, CAN_EDIT_DEVICES, FONT_SIZE, etc.. This way i could have, for example: students of course A will have profiles STUDENT (with basic attributes) and PROFILE A (wich grants acces to pod A). Students of course B will have profiles: STUDENT, PROFILE B(wich grants to pod B and have increased time quotas). I'm using Spring and Hibernate frameworks for this application and MySQL for database. For this web application i would like to stay within boundaries of these tools. The problem is, that i can't figure out how to best represent all these attributes in database. I also want to create some kind of unified way of retrieveing these attributes and their values. Here is the model i've come up with. Using getters/setters in Java

I'm having some trouble with the idea of accessing variables from other classes. I had a post here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3011642/having-access-to-a-private-variable-from-other-classes-in-java where I got some useful information, and thought an example would be better show it, and ask a separate question as well. I have a form that I can input data to, and it has a List variable. I didn't make it static at first, but I thought if I needed to get the total size from another class, then I wouldn't create an instance of that class in order to use the function to getTotalContacts. I basically want to update my status bar with the total number of contacts that are in my list. One of the members said in the above post to use the original Foo member to get the contacts, but I'm not sure how that works in this case. Any thoughts would be appreciated. The pre is to be 80% of the containing element (which ends up being 80% of the window's width). In the event of overflow in the x dimension, I want scrolling. I did all this in the above CSS, and it almost works. The issue I am having is that the background colors of the list elements don't extend with the content. They seem to be capped to the original width of the pre and/or ol element as demonstrated in the following picture where I scroll all the way right as possible: I tinkered with the CSS for a while, but I cannot determine the root cause for this or the fix. During Spring unit test, data written to db but test not seeing the data

I wrote a test case that extends AbstractTransactionalJUnit4SpringContextTests. The single test case I've written creates an instance of class User and attempts to write it to the database using Hibernate. The test code then uses SimpleJdbcTemplate to execute a simple select count(*) from the user table to determine if the user was persisted to the database or not. The test always fails though. I was suspect because in the Spring controller I wrote, the ability to save an instance of User to the db is successful. So I added the Rollback annotation to the unit test and sure enough, the data is written to the database since I can even see it in the appropriate table -- the transaction isn't rolled back when the test case is finished. SQL error - Cannot convert nvarchar to decimal

I have a C# application that simply parses all of the txt documents within a given network directory and imports the data to a SQL server db. Everything was cruising along just fine until about the 1800th file when it happend to have a few blanks in columns that are called out as DBType.Decimal (and the value is usually zero in the files, not blank). So I got this error, "cannot convert nvarchar to decimal". I am wondering how I could tell the app to simply skip the lines that have this issue?? Perhaps I could even just change the column type to varchar even tho values are numbers (what problems could this create?) F# - Facebook Hacker Cup - Double Squares

I'm working on strengthening my F#-fu and decided to tackle the Facebook Hacker Cup Double Squares problem. I'm having some problems with the run-time and was wondering if anyone could help me figure out why it is so much slower than my C# equivalent. There's a good description from another post; Source: Facebook Hacker Cup Qualification Round 2011 A double-square number is an integer X which can be expressed as the sum of two perfect squares. For example, 10 is a double-square because 10 = 3^2 + 1^2. Given X, how can we determine the number of ways in which it can be written as the sum of two squares? For example, 10 can only be written as 3^2 + 1^2 (we don't count 1^2 + 3^2 as being different). On the other hand, 25 can be written as 5^2 + 0^2 or as 4^2 + 3^2. You need to solve this problem for 0 = X = 2,147,483,647. Examples: 10 = 1 25 = 2 3 = 0 0 = 1 1 = 1 My basic strategy (which I'm open to critique on) is to; Create a dictionary (for memoize) of the input numbers initialzed to 0 Get the largest number (LN) and pass it to count/memo function Get the LN square root as int Calculate squares for all numbers 0 to LN and store in dict Sum squares for non repeat combinations of numbers from 0 to LN If sum is in memo dict, add 1 to memo Finally, output the counts of the original numbers. Many to Many delete in NHibernate two parents with common association

I have 3 top level entities in my app: Circuit, Issue, Document Circuits can contain Documents and Issues can contain Documents. When I delete a Circuit, I want it to delete the documents associated with it, unless it is used by something else. I would like this same behavior with Issues. I have it working when the only association is in the same table in the db, but if it is in another table, then it fails due to foreign key constraints. ex 1(This will cascade properly, because there is only a foreign constraint from Circuit to Document) Document1 exists. Circuit1 exists and contains a reference to Document1. If I delete Circuit1 then it deletes Document1 with it. ex 2(This will cascade properly, because there is only a foreign constraint from Circuit to Document.) Document1 exists. Circuit1 exists and contains a reference to Document1. Circuit2 exists and contains a reference to Document1. If I delete Circuit1 then it is deleted, but Document1 is not deleted because Circuit2 exists. If I then delete Circuit2, then Document1 is deleted. ex 3(This will throw an error, because when it deletes the Circuit it sees that there are no other circuits that reference the document so it tries to delete the document. However it should not, because there is an Issue that has a foreign constraint to the document.) Document 1 exists. Circuit1 exists and contains a reference to Document1. Issue1 exists and contains a reference to Document1. If I delete Circuit1, then it fails, because it tries to delete Document1, but Issues1 still has a reference. Need help displaying a table dynamically based on a drop down date selection

I am designing a job rota planner for a company and need help displaying a dynamic table containing the staff details. I have the following tables in MySQL database: Staff, Event, and Job. The staff table holds staff details (staffed, name, address...etc), the Event table (eventide, eventName, Fromdate, Todate...etc) and the Job table holds (Jobid, Jobdate, Eventid(fk), Staffid (fk)). I need to dynamically display the available staff list from the staff table when the user selects the event and the date (3 drop downs: date, month, and year) from a PHP form. I need to display staff members that have not been assigned work on the selected date by checking the Jobdate in the Job table. I have been at this for all day and can't get around it. I am still learning PHP and would surely appreciate any help I can get. How to save/retrieve words to/from SQlite database?

Sorry if I repeat my question but I have still had no clues of what to do and how to deal with the question. My app is a dictionary. I assume that users will need to add words that they want to memorise to a Favourite list. Thus, I created a Favorite button that works on two phases: short-click to save the currently-view word into the Favourite list; and long-click to view the Favourite list so that users can click on any words to look them up again. I go for using a SQlite database to store the favourite words but I wonder how I can do this task. Specifically, my questions are: Should I use the current dictionary SQLite database or create a new SQLite database to favorite words? In each case, what codes do I have to write to cope with the mentioned task? Could anyone there kindly help? How to Configure Windows Machine to Allow File Sharing with DNS Alias

I have not seen a single article posted anywhere online that brings together all the settings one would need to do to make this work properly on Windows, so I thought I would post it here. To facilitate failover schemes, a common technique is to use DNS CNAME records (DNS Aliases) for different machine roles. Then instead of changing the Windows computername of the actual machine name, one can switch a DNS record to point to a new host. This can work on Microsoft Windows machines, but to make it work with file sharing the following configuration steps need to be taken. Outline The Problem The Solution Allowing other machines to use filesharing via the DNS Alias (DisableStrictNameChecking) Allowing server machine to use filesharing with itself via the DNS Alias (BackConnectionHostNames) Providing browse capabilities for multiple NetBIOS names (OptionalNames) Register the Kerberos service principal names (SPNs) for other Windows functions like Printing (setspn) References 1. The Problem On Windows machines, file sharing can work via the computer name, with or without full qualification, or by the IP Address. By default, however, filesharing will not work with arbitrary DNS aliases. To enable filesharing and other Windows services to work with DNS aliases, you must make registry changes as detailed below and reboot the machine. 2. The Solution Allowing other machines to use filesharing via the DNS Alias (DisableStrictNameChecking) This change alone will allow other machines on the network to connect to the machine using any arbitrary hostname. (However this change will not allow a machine to connect to itself via a hostname, see BackConnectionHostNames below). Edit the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters and add a value DisableStrictNameChecking of type DWORD set to 1. Allowing server machine to use filesharing with itself via the DNS Alias (BackConnectionHostNames) This change is necessary for a DNS alias to work with filesharing from a machine to find itself. This creates the Local Security Authority host names that can be referenced in an NTLM authentication request. To do this, follow these steps for all the nodes on the client computer: To the registry subkey HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0, add new Multi-String Value BackConnectionHostNames In the Value data box, type the CNAME or the DNS alias, that is used for the local shares on the computer, and then click OK. Note: Type each host name on a separate line. Providing browse capabilities for multiple NetBIOS names (OptionalNames) Allows ability to see the network alias in the network browse list. Edit the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters and add a value OptionalNames of type Multi-String Add in a newline delimited list of names that should be registered under the NetBIOS browse entries Names should match NetBIOS conventions (i.e. not FQDN, just hostname) Register the Kerberos service principal names (SPNs) for other Windows functions like Printing (setspn) NOTE: Should not need to do this for basic functions to work, documented here for completeness. We had one situation in which the DNS alias was not working because there was an old SPN record interfering, so if other steps aren't working check if there are any stray SPN records. You must register the Kerberos service principal names (SPNs), the host name, and the fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) for all the new DNS alias (CNAME) records. If you do not do this, a Kerberos ticket request for a DNS alias (CNAME) record may fail and return the error code KDC_ERR_S_SPRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN. To view the Kerberos SPNs for the new DNS alias records, use the Setspn command-line tool (setspn.exe). The Setspn tool is included in Windows Server 2003 Support Tools. You can install Windows Server 2003 Support Tools from the Support\Tools folder of the Windows Server 2003 startup disk. How to use the tool to list all records for a computername: setspn -L computername To register the SPN for the DNS alias (CNAME) records, use the Setspn tool with the following syntax: setspn -A host/your_ALIAS_name computername setspn -A host/your_ALIAS_name.company.com computername 3. heimdal kerberos in openldap issue

I think I posted this on the wrong 'sister site', so here it is. I'm having a bit of trouble getting Kerberos (Heimdal version) to work nicely with OpenLDAP. The kerberos database is being stored in LDAP itself. The KDC uses SASL EXTERNAL authentication as root to access the container ou. Cyrus on CentOS with sasl / pam / ldap

SASL/PAM/LDAP is driving me crazy... that's what I read a lot when googling for problems in this area, and what I experience myself :-S I'm trying to get Cyrus imap working for virtual hosting on CentOS with this authorisation backend and really don't know what's happening. In saslauthd I configured the LDAP search filter to use, but it looks like pam completely ignores it. The weird thing is, I do get an error when I rename or remove /etc/saslauthd.conf, but when the file exists it seems happily ignored... The filter in slapd.log seems to be taken from /etc/ldap.conf. Can't configure PAM + LDAP on Debian Lenny - Getting error=49 on server logs

I've been migrating some servers and desktops using Ubuntu 10.04 from getting the users from an old OpenLDAP implementation to a newer Centos Active Directory. I haven't had any problems so far, until I reached a Debian Lenny server. I've set up the server as the others, setting /etc/ldap.conf and /etc/ldap/ldap.conf. However, when I issue "getent passwd", I get nothing from the LDAP server. Reading the pam_ldap manpage, I realized that /etc/ldap.conf was not an accepted file by pam_ldap -it worked with Ubuntu though-, so I renamed it to /etc/pam_ldap.conf. Same result.
