  I'm getting the following errors from MSBuild while trying to build a solution: C:\dev\MySln.sln : warning MSB3422: Failed to retrieve VC project information through the VC project engine object model. Unable to determine default tool for the specified file configuration. C:\dev\MySln.sln : warning MSB3425: Could not resolve VC project reference "C:\dev\MyProj.vcproj". Have you got any ideas on what's causing this? I've seen other postings about similar, but different errors such as when the MSB3422 error has a different message and shows "Illegal characters in path.", but I haven't seen any useful information about how to solve the error I'm getting where it says "Unable to determine default tool for the specified file configuration.". • C# Begin/EndReceive - how do I read large data?

  When reading data in chunks of say, 1024, how do I continue to read from a socket that receives a message bigger than 1024 bytes until there is no data left? Should I just use BeginReceive to read a packet's length prefix only, and then once that is retrieved, use Receive() (in the async thread) to read the rest of the packet? Or is there another way? edit: I thought Jon Skeet's link had the solution, but there is a bit of a speedbump with that code. The reason for this is if the buffer gets filled on a read it is assumed there is more data; but the same problem happens as before. A 2 byte buffer, for exmaple, gets filled twice on a 4 byte packet, and assumes there is more data. It then blocks because there is nothing left to read. The problem is that the receive function doesn't know when the end of the packet is. This got me thinking to two possible solutions: I could either have an end-of-packet delimiter or I could read the packet header to find the length and then receive exactly that amount (as I originally suggested). There's problems with each of these, though. I don't like the idea of using a delimiter, as a user could somehow work that into a packet in an input string from the app and screw it up. It also just seems kinda sloppy to me. The length header sounds ok, but I'm planning on using protocol buffers - I don't know the format of the data. Is there a length header? How many bytes is it? Would this be something I implement myself? Etc.. What should I do?

  To extend the User object with custom fields, the Django docs recommend using UserProfiles. However, according to this answer to a question about this from a year or so back: extending django.contrib.auth.models.User also works better now -- ever since the refactoring of Django's inheritance code in the models API. And articles such as this lay out how to extend the User model with custom fields, together with the advantages (retrieving properties directly from the user object, rather than through the .get_profile()). So I was wondering whether there is any consensus on this issue, or reasons to use one or the other. Or even what the Django team currently think?

• Event Listener in Google Charts API

  I'm busy using Google Charts in one of my projects to display data in a table. Everything is working great. Except that I need to see what line a user selected once they click a button. This would obviously be done with Javascript, but I've been struggling for days now to no avail.   I am building a settings dialog for my application and right now all of the settings correspond with settings on the main view-model, but as I add more view's and view-models some may not. I need to know what the best practice is for loading the current settings into the settings dialog and then saving the settings to thier corresponding view-models if the user clicks okay. I will not be using the Properties.Settings.Default system to store settings since I want my application to be as portable as possible and this would store user scoped settings in the directory: C:\Users\ username \Local Settings\Application Data\ ApplicationName Instead of in my application's directory. In case it makes any difference I am using the MVVM Light Toolkit by Laurent Bugnion.

• Create unordered list tree menu from data stored in an table with the adjacency list model...php

  I need to create a tree menu of "nth" subcategories. I settled on using the adjacency list model for my table structure, because I won't be updating this table very much and this seemed the easiest to implement for my use. I want to style the output using "ul" and "li" tags...I already have a css and jquery solution to do the styling. My problem comes from pulling the data out of the database and using a recursive function via PHP to build the list ... the list is a concatenated string that gets parsed to build the tree. I'm really having a hard time getting the closing "ul" and "li" tags to line up just where they need to be. Is this the best way to do this? Are there other better ways using arrays or something like that to do this? Any examples you can point me to of "best practices" for building a list like this will be appreciated. Thanks.

On a licensed machine, a Licenses.licx is created - with what appears to be just the assembly full name/identifiers. This file has to be included when the client assembly is built. How does this model work? Both from component-vendors' and users' perspective. What is the .licx file used for? Should it be checked in?   I need to build some sort of a custom CMS for a client of ours. These are some of the functional requirements: Must be able to manage the list of Pages in the site Each Page can contain a number of ColumnGroups A ColumnGroup is nothing more than a list of Columns in a certain ColumnGroupLayout. For example: "one column taking up the entire width of the page", "two columns each taking up half of the width", ... Each Column can contain a number ContentBlocks Examples of a ContentBlock are: TextBlock, NewsBlock, PictureBlock, ... ContentBlocks can be given a certain sorting within a Column A ContentBlock can be put in different Columns so that content can be reused without having to be duplicated. My first quick draft of how this could look like in C# code (we're using ASP.NET 4.0 to develop the CMS) can be found at the bottom of my question. One of the technical requirements is that it must be as easy as possible to add new types of ContentBlocks to the CMS. So I would like model everything as flexible as possible. Unfortunately, I'm already stuck at trying to figure out how the database should look like. One of the problems I'm having has to do with sorting different types of ContentBlocks in a Column. I guess each type of ContentBlock (like TextBlock, NewsBlock, PictureBlock, ...) should have it's own table in the database because each has it's own different fields. A TextBlock might only have a field called Text whereas a NewsBlock might have fields for the Text, the Summary, the PublicationDate, ... Since one Column can have ContentBlocks located in different tables, I guess I'll have to create a many-to-many association for each type of ContentBlock. For example: ColumnTextBlocks, ColumnNewsBlocks and ColumnPictureBlocks. The problem I have with this setup is the sorting of the different ContentBlocks in a column. This could be something like this: TextBlock NewsBlock TextBlock TextBlock PictureBlock Where do I store the sorting number? If I store them in the associaton tables, I'll have to update a lot of tables when changing the sorting order of ContentBlocks in a Column. Is this a good approach to the problem? Basically, my question is: What is the best way to model this keeping in mind that it should be easy to add new types of ContentBlocks? My next question is: What ORM can deal with that kind of modeling? To be honest, we are ORM-virgins at work. I have been reading a bit about Linq-to-SQL and NHibernate, but we have no experience with them. Because of the IList in the Column class (see code below) I think we can rule out Linq-to-SQL, right? Can NHibernate handle the mapping of data from many different tables to one IList? Also keep in mind that this is just a very small portion of the domain. Other parts are Users belonging to a certain UserGroup having certain Permissions on Pages, ColumnGroups, Columns and ContentBlocks.   An app (C#4, WinForms, Entity Framework, SQL Server 2008) of mine maintains a graph of interconnected objects, each having some simple member fields and a set of many directed (in and out) one-to-one links to other objects. I'd like to offer a user an ability to view and edit this graph visually some way, creating and removing connections, modifying objects attributes values and introducing/dropping objects. I suppose there has to be a framework (at list a primitive kind of) for this as visual model design tools are pretty common to meet. Do you know one?

  When I use the ViewData.ModelMetadata.Properties in order to loop the properties (with an additional Where(modelMetadata => modelMetadata.ShowForEdit && !ViewData.TemplateInfo.Visited(modelMetadata))), and thereby create a generic edit view, the properties of the view model's base class are rendered last. Is it possible to use a clever OrderBy() or is there another way to first get the properties of the base class, and then the sub class'? Reverse won't do the trick since the ordering of each class' properties is perfectly fine. A workaround would of course be composition + delegation, but since we don't have mixins, it's too un-DRY IMHO, why I seek a better solution if possible.

  I want to include certain .js and .css files only on pages that need them. For example, my EditorTemplate DateTime.ascx needs files anytimec.js and anytimec.css. That template is applied whenever I use either the EditorFor or EditorForModel helper methods in a view for a model with a DateTime type value. I've put this condition into the <head> section of my master page.   I have a single model in CakePHP that has multiple forms on different pages of the site that I would like to validate differently even where the field name is the same - I have discovered that you can set 'on' to create|update which has been a handy discovery but I am wondering if there is any other way of explicitly declaring rules based on the form that was submitted? Just to rephrase for clarity, form a and form b contain fields of the same name, but if form a is submitted the fields in question should be validated differently than if they were submitted from form b. Possible?

I can check if :account_type exists as a symbol, but where does the stored data come into play? Is there something I need to do in the controller? The standard way is to edit apps/myapp/models.py this way: from apps import tagging tagging.register(MyModel) I want to keep both applications without changes, for example, to be able to pull new versions and just replace them.   I'm dynamically storing information in the database depending on the request: // table, id and column are provided by the request table_obj = getattr(models, table) record = table_obj.objects.get(pk=id) setattr(record, column, request.POST['value']) The problem is that request.POST['value'] sometimes contains a foreign record's primary key (i.e. an integer) whereas Django expects the column's value to be an object of type ForeignModel: Cannot assign "u'122'": "ModelA.b" must be a "ModelB" instance. Now, is there an elegant way to dynamically check whether b is a column containing foreign keys and what model these keys are linked to? (So that I can load the foreign record by it's primary key and assign it to ModelA?) Or doesn't Django provide information like this to the programmer so I really have to get my hands dirty and use isinstance() on the foreign-key column?

The system runs fine when volume is low, but when the number of requests becomes high, the system starts rejecting incoming requests with the above exception message. Once the problem appears, very few requests actually make it through and get processed normally, about 2 in every 30. The vast majority of requests fail, until a SQL Server restart or IIS reset is performed. The system then start processing requests normally, and after some time it starts throwing the same error. The error occurs when a data adapter runs the Fill() method against a SELECT statement, to populate a strongly-typed dataset. It appears that the dataset does not like the data it is given and throws this exception. This error occurs on various SELECT statements, acting on different tables. I have regenerated the dataset and checked the relevant constraints, as well as the table from which the data is read. Both the dataset definition and the data in the table are fine. Admittedly, the hardware running both the web app and SQL Server 2000 is seriously outdated, considering the numbers of incoming requests it currently receives. The amount of RAM consumed by SQL Server is dynamically allocated, and at peak times SQL Server can consume up to 2.8 GB out of a total of 3.5 GB on the server. At first I suspected some sort of index or database corruption, but after running DBCC CHECKDB, no errors were found in the database. So now I'm wondering whether this error is a result of the hardware limitations of the system. Is it possible for SQL Server to somehow mess up the data it's supposed to pass to the dataset, resulting in constraint violation due to, say, data type/length mismatch? I tried accessing the RowError messages of the data rows in the retrieved dataset tables but I kept getting empty strings. I know that HasErrors = true for the datatables in question. I have not set the EnableConstraints = false, and I don't want to do that. Thanks in advance. Ray

  Hi when saving to a model, my created and modified fields aren't automatically populated by CakePHP. It was automatically populated when I was using MySQL but now it isn't. I'm not using NOW() back when I was still using MySQL. Why is it? Also when a field's value is not set 'NULL' (with quotes) is inserted causing errors because SQL Server says I can't insert a string to a field of type smallint/date etc. How do I fix this? I was thinking that I should switch to keeping track of the edit version in the Edit object and then just sorting the has_many relationship base on this version.

  Just curious, I spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to get an array of all the records in a nested model. I just want to make sure there is not a better way. Here is the setup: I have three models that are nested under each other (Facilities Tags Inspections), producing code like this for routes.rb: map.resources :facilities do |facilities| facilities.resources :tags, :has_many => :inspections end I wanted to get all of the inspections for a facility and here is what my code ended up being: def facility_inspections @facility = Facility.find(params[:facility_id]) @inspections = [] @facility.tags.each do |tag| tag.inspections.each do |inspection| @inspections << inspection end end end It works but is this the best way to do this - I think it's cumbersome.   I want my application to sanitize html on input rather than on display, so that the fields saved into the database are sanitized. I've been doing this with strip_tags, and it was working great. However, this has the downside that it means the user can't input anything that's bracketed with < and . How can I tell Rails in the model to securely escape tags before saving them to the database? I'd like to not have to call h on the sanitized fields again before using them in the views.

  When I retrieve an object say by $em->find('Application\Models\User', 1); or other methods like DQL, findBy*() cause the __construct() of the model class to run? I am having a problem where I set variables there like reference to EntityManager and I find that its not set. I tried putting a die() in __construct() and it doesn't halt the application. Can I say that if I want to set other properties/fields like EntityManager $em I have to do it some other way?   Currently, I have extracted depth points to construct a 3D model from 2 stereo cameras. The methods I have used are openCV graphCut method and a software from http://sourceforge.net/projects/reconststereo/. However, the generated 3D models are not very accurate, which leads me to question: 1) What is the problem with pixel-based method? 2) Should I change my pixel-based method to feature-based or object-recognition-based method? Is there a best method? 3) Are there any other ways to do such reconstruction? Additionally, the depth extracted comes only from 2 images. What if I am turning the camera 360 degrees to obtain a video? Looking forward to suggestion on how to combine this depth information. Thank you very much :)
