• Converting a size_t into an integer (c++)

  Hello, I've been trying to make a for loop that will iterate based off of the length of a network packet. In the API there exists a variable (size_t) by event.packet-dataLength. I want to iterate from 0 to event.packet-dataLength - 7 increasing i by 10 each time it iterates but I am having a world of trouble. I looked for solutions but have been unable to find anything useful. I tried converting the size_t to an unsigned int and doing the arithmetic with that but unfortunately it didn't work. Basically all I want is this: for (int i = 0; i < event.packet->dataLength - 7; i+=10) { } Though every time I do something like this or attempt at my conversions the i < # part is a huge number. They gave a printf statement in a tutorial for the API which used "%u" to print the actual number however when I convert it to an unsigned int it is still incorrect. I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

UPDATE This actually turned out to be a bug in the Oracle 10.2.0.1 client. Although, I'm still interested in ideas on how I could have figured this out without finding the bug in Oracle's bug database.

  Hi, I am using an iFrame with a form that return some content with an AJAX link. I am then moving the returned content out of the iFrame into the main page. However, then the ajax link does not work and the error "Element is null" is created once the link is clicked. How can I move content from the iFrame and still have the AJAX link working?   I'm terribly new to web development. I'm trying to make a pretty simple site with a friend. My friend has taken the time to design the layout for our site, and we have things looking how we want in a static HTML page. What I'd like to do now is move over to a Content Management System like Drupal but keep the same design that we have all ready laid out. Since I'm completely new to this field, I'm looking for some best-practices advice as to how to make this leap. It's apparent to me that I could probably edit some existing Drupal Theme to make it give me the layout that I want, but is that the path I should go down? Thanks! Update: Also, is it more than just replacing my style.css with their style.css?

• C or C++ to write a compiler?

  I want to write a compiler for a custom markup language, I want to get optimum performance and I also want to have a good scalable design. Multi-paradigm programming language (C++) is more suitable to implement modern design patterns, but I think that will degrade performance a little bit (think of RTTI for example) which more or less might make C a better choice. I wonder what is the best language (C, C++ or even objective C) if someone wants to create a modern compiler (in the sense of complying to modern software engineering principles as a software) that is fast, efficient, and well designed.

  I need to define new UI Elements as well as data binding in code because they will be implemented after run-time. Here is a simplified version of what I am trying to do. • C# Windows Service

  Scenario I've created a windows service, but whenever I start it, it stops immediately. The service was concieved from a console application that used to subscribe to an event and watch processes on a server. If anything happened to process (i.e. It was killed), then the event would trigger the process to be restarted. The reason I'm telling you this is because the original code used to look like this: Original Console App Code: static void Main(string[] args) { StartProcess sp = new StartProcess(); //Note the readline that means the application sits here waiting for an event! Console.ReadLine(); } Now that this code has been turned into a Windows Service, it is essentially EXACTLY THE SAME. However, the service does not sit there waiting, even with the readline, it just ends..... New Windows Service Code: protected override void OnStart(string[] args) { ProcessMonitor pm = new ProcessMonitor(); Console.ReadLine(); } Thoughts Since the functionality is entirely encapsulated within this single class (It quite literally starts, sets up some events and waits) - How can I get the service to actually sit there and just wait? It seems to be ignoring the readline. However this works perfectly as a console application, it is just far more convenient to have it as a service.

• A problem of trying to implement scrolling inertia with jQuery

  I'm trying to add some iPhone style scrolling inertia to a web page that will only be viewed on the iPad. I have the scrolling working in one direction (scrollLeft), but it doesn't work in the other direction. The intertia is the difference betweent he old moveX position and the latest moveX position when a touch ends. I then try to animate the scrollLeft property of a div that contains a bunch of thumbnails. As I've said, this works when scrolling to the left, but not when scrolling to the right. I'm wondering how do i design the best user interface that the user can localize data for various languages? for instance, in making a page which its title is different in every lang, do i put a textbox for every one? it's not a suitable way to do(in case of 10 lang, the user has 10 textbox!!! too silly) what is your idea about this? • realistically speaking, could a seasoned .net developer enter the java space and land a job?

  I've been working with .net since 2001, and I am considering making a move into the java space. I find that java has so many more mature tools (hibernate is more mature, spring framework, established patters/designs, containers, distributed cache frameworks, etc etc.) I have been doing .net, and just recently I have been getting into design patterns, ORMS, etc. and it just seems the .net side of things are not as mature. Yes the trend going forward looks great as more and more are getting into this design strategy etc. I don't want this to get into a flame war, but I read that its not about the framework/stack, but the tools around it are what make the difference. And to me Java seems to be the winner. Anyhow, the real question here is, could I realistically get into shape in 6 months? i.e. Someone would consider hiring me, and not at a junior dev pay rate? Is this a bad idea?

  I have the following code which definitely returns a proper data result if I use the 2.0.0 version, but for some reason bootstrap's typeahead plugin is giving me an error. • Deriving an HTMLElement Object from jQuery Object

  I'm doing a fairly exhaustive series of DOM manipulations where a few elements (specifically form elements) have some events. I am dynamically creating (actually cloning from a source element) several boxes and assigning a change() event to them. The change event executes, and within the context of the event, "this" is the HTML Element Object. What I need to do at this point however is determine a contact for this HTML Element Object. I have these objects stored already as jQuery entities in assorted arrays, but obviously [HTMLElement Object] != [Object Object] And the trick is that I cannot cast $(this) and make a valid comparison since that would create a new object and the pointer would be different. So... I've been banging my head against this for a while. In the past I've been able to circumvent this problem by doing an innerHTML comparison, but in this case the objects I am comparing are 100% identical, just there's lots of them. Therefore I need a solid comparison. This would be easy if I could somehow derive the HTMLElement object from my originating jQuery object. Thoughts, other ideas? Help. :(

  I have hosted an asp.net 2.0 site. Everyday, i am getting an error "Padding is invalid and cannot be removed" 2-3 times. Backend used is sql server 2005. the site is controlled via plesk 9.2 CP. Pooling is enabled with timeout as 120 Minutes, in IIS. Can it be the reason for this? I have not used any encryption except for the stored passwords(MD5) The error message is : " Base Exception = : Padding is invalid and cannot be removed. - Source : System.Web - TargetSite :Void ThrowError(System.Exception, System.String, System.String, Boolean)Message : Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster. " & System Log (Application) says " Event code: 4009 Event message: Viewstate verification failed. Reason: The viewstate supplied failed integrity check. Event detail code: 50203 ViewStateException information: Exception message: Invalid viewstate. Port: 31235 User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) " I have hosted it in a dedicated server and not in a web farm. Will keeping a static machine key help resolve this issue? Please guide me on this.

But I want to unbind the keyboard from the table when fancybox opens. When fancybox opens nothing changes.... • Symfony/Propel NestedSet left/right ID corruption/adjustment

  Hi folks, I have a nested set application that seems to be getting corrupted. Here's what I'm seeing: We're using nested sets for a binary tree (any node can have 2 children). It appears to be working fine, but some event causes a discrepancy. For instance, when I do a getNumberOfDescendants() for the root node, it will slowly increase as this event happens. However, displaying the tree works fine, as does inserting (apparently). Has anybody seen anything like this before? For instance, my repair program shows this as the repairs that it makes: User pxxxxx left 0=>0, right 145=>129 User axxxxx left 1=>1, right 124=>106 User mxxxxx left 119=>117, right 120=>118 User fxxxxx left 125=>107, right 144=>128 User fxxxxx left 126=>108, right 131=>113 User rxxxxx left 127=>109, right 128=>110 User mxxxxx left 129=>111, right 130=>112 User mxxxxx left 132=>114, right 143=>127 User cxxxxx left 133=>115, right 142=>126 User gxxxxx left 134=>116, right 137=>121 User mxxxxx left 135=>119, right 136=>120 User jxxxxx left 138=>122, right 141=>125 User axxxxx left 139=>123, right 140=>124 I thought at first it was when I deleted a user, but it has since occurred w/o that event. • Flex: How to resize DisplayObject to fit panel in Flex application

  I am trying to attach some of my actionscript class, inherited from Sprite, to my Flex application by attaching it to a UIComponent, then add UIComponent to a panel. However, the size of my Sprite class appears to be larger than the panel. So, I try to resize it using DisplayObject.scale property, but I need to know the size of my container. Since I try to make my code reusable, I figure that I should let my Sprite class handle the resize by getting it via its parent property (let's say, I can resize it by set this.scaleX = this.parent.Width/this.width or something like this) However, my Sprite class's parent, which is the UIComponent, has width/height of 0. So, my question is: 1) Is there any better way to resize DisplayObject class to fit its container when attached to Flex object? 2) If you know, why my UIComponent's size remain 0 and my DisplayObject still appears at its full size? • TableView Cells unresponsive

  I have a TableView and I wish to be able to press several cells one after the other and have messages appear. At the moment the cells are often unresponsive. I found some coed for a similar problem someone was kind enough to post, however, although he claimed it worked 100% it doesn't work for me. The app won't even build. I also get some faults: request for member 'visibleCells' in something not a structure or a union. incompatible type for argument 1 of pointInsideWithEvent, expression does not have a valid object type and similar. I must admit I'm not so good at reading other people's code but I was wondering whether the problems here are obvious and if so if anyone could give me a pointer it would be greatly appreciated.

  I am a passionate software developer and greatly enjoy programming. However I was recently contacted regarding a developer lead position for a government job at NYC for the fire department. The pay is pretty good, and I would assume the position has good job security and stability. But I am hesitant to even go for an interview as it seems like an exaggerated version of Office Space with a lot of Bureaucracy and mindless paper work.   I have been experimenting with some concepts from XP, like the following: Pair Programming Test First Programming Incremental Deliveries Ruthless Refactoring So far so good until I had a major stump: How do I design my test cases when there aren't any code yet? From what basis do I have to design them? From simple assumptions? From the initial requirements? Or is this where UML diagrams and the "analysis phase" fits in? Just had to ask because in some XP books I've read, there was little to no discussion of any diagramming tool (there was one which suggested I come up with pseudocodes and some sort of a flowchart...but it did not help me in writing my tests)
