• FAQ: Highlight GridView Row on Click and Retain Selected Row on Postback

  A couple of months ago I’ve written a simple demo about “Highlighting GridView Row on MouseOver”. I’ve noticed many members in the forums (http://forums.asp.net) are asking how to highlight row in GridView and retain the selected row across postbacks. So I’ve decided to write this post to demonstrate how to implement it as reference to others who might need it. In this demo I going to use a combination of plain JavaScript and jQuery to do the client-side manipulation. I presumed that you already know how to bind the grid with data because I will not include the codes for populating the GridView here. For binding the gridview you can refer this post: Binding GridView with Data the ADO.Net way or this one: GridView Custom Paging with LINQ. To persist the settings we will use some HiddenFields control to store the data so that when it postback we can reference the value from there. It is also where we set the previous row and rowIndex values in HiddenFields.  The $(function(){}); is a short-hand for the jQuery document.ready event. This event will be fired once the page is posted back to the server that’s why we call the function RetainSelectedRow(). The RetainSelectedRow() function is where we referenced the current selected values stored from the HiddenFields and pass these values to the ChangeRowColor() function to retain the highlighted row. • Customizing JBar for Notifications

  Lately I've been using JBar, a very neat jQuery plugin for displaying notifications in my web applications. Unfortunately the original version of JBar only supports binding to the click event of a DOM item. In order to get around this limitation I have modified the source code and posted an updated version on my GitHub account here. The modified version allows you to display a JBar notification by calling a method. I typically use it to display succes or failure messages when doing Ajax calls. I have also included some additional CSS and JS so that you can diplay different styles of notifications. showNotification(message) shows a green "success" message. showWarning(message) shows an orange "warning" message. showMessage(message, className) allows you to specify a custom class to apply to the notification for additional styling purposes.   Let's say that I have a web Application where i'm going to have 300 users and each one have to see data on real time, imagine that each client make an ajax call to the server to see in real time what's happens with the changes of the data, this calls are made each 300 ms per user. I know that i can run a simulation to see if the hardware of my server supports this example. But what happen's if the number of users start to grow up. Is there a way that i can measure the hardware needed to handle this growing behavior, a software, a formula, algorithm or maybe recommend me if i need to implement an distributed application with multiplies servers and balance the loads.

• Building a website, want to use java

  I'd like to make a simple-ish website that is essentially a small game. Key strokes are to be processed and sent to a server (already acquired and should support SQL and JSP, I believe) which then translate to a location and written to the DB. SQL queries are to be used to retrieve these locations and written to other clients connected to the website. Their page is to be updated with these locations. I have working knowledge of Java, jQuery/Ajax, SQL and JavaScript but I'm unfamiliar with JSP and how everything hooks up. I'm aware of the MVC paradigm as well. For my little game idea, would these technologies work? Am I over thinking this and can make it much easier to implement? What might be a good tutorial or example to study?

  As programmers, you have certain curtains to hide behind with your code. With PHP all of your code is server side preprocessed, so this never see's the light of day as far as the user is concerned. If you have maybe rushed through some code for a deadline, as long as it functions correctly then the user never needs to know how many expletives you've inserted into the comments. However with more and more applications being written for the web, with a desktop feel implemented by AJAX and popular frameworks like jQuery being banded around to every Tom, Dick and Harry, how can a programmer maintain some dignity and hide his/her JavaScript code without it being flaunted like dirty laundry when the users hit Right Click-View Source or Inspect Element. Are there any ways to hide JavaScript application logic/code?

• Java web UI framework like ASP.NET MVC?

  I'm doing some web apps for personal projects that might be shared out with my friends. I'm trying to use skills that will help me at work, but don't have $$ to spend on Visual Studio right now and don't want to try to cobble something together with Express Editions. Since I've been sort of wanting to bring my Java skills up to date and the main skills I want to work on are design and architecture skills, this isn't a big deal - except that I have no idea how to track down the right UI framework. I know I want something based on MVC, to get more practice with frameworks for that design pattern (we're using ASP .NET MVC2 at work). The UIs that I'll be making will be pretty simple - data entry, buttons, text, images. They will need AJAX. Any thoughts about which frameworks to look at? I'll be watching the comments, if anyone wants additional clarification on what I'm looking for.

• Server overhead caused by bots?

  I have one customer website causing overhead (http://www.modacalcio.it/en/by-kind/football-boots.html). With htop opened, I am trying navigate the website and the much load of the website is done by the ajax link being placed on the left side of the website. The website is hosted by a VPS with 3 proc and 2GB RAM, with enough hard with disk space. The real problem is that this website is new and not visited much. From the http-status module I am seeing that the overhead is caused by bots (Google bots, Bing bots, hrefs checker and so on). So I thought that's probably due to those spiders trying to crawl all those links at once - could this be causing this overhead? I have also put rel="nofollow" in those links, but this doesn't keep the bots away. Is there any way through code or Plesk to disable those links to those bots?

• What is the relationship between the business logic layer and the data access layer?

  I'm working on an MVC-ish app (I'm not very experienced with MVC, hence the "-ish"). My model and data access layer are hard to test because they're very tightly coupled, so I'm trying to uncouple them. What is the nature of the relationship between them? Should just the model know about the DAL? Should just the DAL know about the model? Or should both the model and the DAL be listeners of the other? In my specific case, it's: a web application the model is client-side (javascript) the data is accessed from the back-end using Ajax persistence/back-end is currently PHP/MySQL, but may have to switch to Python/GoogleDataStore on the GAE

  My site uses pushState and JSON data to display content. So, for example, this might appear on my page: <a href="/some/page">some page</a> The JavaScript then prevents the default action (following the link), and instead renders a view (using a different api, such as /getjson?some_page). $('[href]').click(function(){ history.pushState(...); handleURL(...); }); Assume my server will respond to requests at /some/page with a pre-rendered version. My questions are: will Googlebot receive the prerendered version, or allow JavaScript to instead invoke pushState, etc. if it doesn't make the direct request, will it wait for AJAX content to be loaded? does Googlebot implement pushState, so it will show the proper URL in search results?

  Can anyone recommend a simple message room (not chat room) which I can use for a private communication between my users. My idea: to grant some users (2-3 at the most) a specific privilege to talk privately in a message room. none of them would be administrator there. I need such features: - admin panel for adding users allowed to post messages in room - room invisible to anyone except users - filtering not-allowed words - Ajax-enabled so that replies appear immediately - other message room features I have a linux hosting so PHP message room would be the best option. I thought of using a forum for this, but it's too much work as a forum is public by nature and I need something private by nature. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Using disqus for a website (question on SERP and backlink)

  I am building a website and am trying to decide between writing my own commenting system and using disquss. One of the main deciding factors is that (obviously), I want comments left on my page to be show on SERPS. However, I remeber reading somewhere that disqus loads comments into a page using AJAX - and therefore the comments are "invisible" as far as Googlebot and other SE crawlers are concerned. Could someone confirm or refute this? The other question I have is about whether (as a commenter), When I place a comment on another website using disqus (including any links I may add to my comment), do the lionks in my comment count as a backlink (in other words are they "dofollow" or "nofollow" links)?

  I'm attempting to drive my user interface (heavy on javascript) through selenium. I've already tested the rest of my ajax interaction with selenium successfully. However, this one particular method seems to be eluding me because I can't seem to fake the correct click event. I could solve this problem by simply waiting in the test for the user to click a point and then continuing with the test but this seems like a cop out. But I'm really running out of time on my deadline to have this done and working. Should I just get this done and move on or should I spend the extra (unknown) amount of time to fix this problem and be able to have my selenium tests 100% automated?

• Which one scales better asp or php?

  Let's say the website is doing fine(forums,pictures,ajax). And it needs scaling up/scaling out. I feel more comfortable with php but I have worked with asp.net as well. Would you say asp.net is much more powerful, more robust and thus easier to scale out? What would be the pros and cons of converting the website to asp.net in regards to scalability and performance versus keeping the website written in PHP? Examples of personal experience in making such a conversion would be a plus. Thank you.

• How many developers do I need to build a website like Freelancer.com in about 3-5 months? [closed]

  I have been asked to make a list of people that I need to build something similar to freelancer.com. Not exactly same, has a few more features to it too but I can't really get my head around the whole freelancer.com site. I have built a social networking site from scratch which is 70% of Facebook and 20% Google+ in about 5 months with raw PHP, JS, CSS and Ajax. I dont think it will take me more than a month or something to build the whole freelancer.com from scratch. Please suggest anything that should I pay attention to. I am thinking about: 2 php developers 1 mysql engineer 1 network/server engineer 1 graphics artist 1 UI developer Time frame: 20 days Is this a good estimation?
