  I've just installed Google Earth on my PC,which runs Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. When I open Google Earth,a window pop-ups and says:"Unsupported Graphics Card Your graphics card does nor meet the minimum spec required to run Google Earth,which is a 3D accelerated card with shader support.It is strongly recommended that you try running Google Earth on a different machine or in a different rendering mode or upgrade to a newer graphics card.You may continue,but the application is unlikely to work." Maybe you'll say:"Buy a better graphics card!",but I used Google Earth on this machine an year ago,when I had Windows 7 & everything worked well,so my graphics card is good enough. The Linux version has bigger requirements than the Windows one or what???

• Does connection pooling work fine to execute 60 DB queries to load a page?

  We use Linq2Sql in an ASP.NET application. Unfortunately the eager-loading in Linq2Sql isn't as powerful as in Entity Framework, so a lot of the data has to be lazy loaded as needed. Taking connection pooling into account, is it OK for a web page to execute 60 queries to load a page? Executing a single big query probably won't be much better, as those 60 queries will all those connection pooled connections and not open a new connection each time (which I realize is slow). Any thoughts?

• Launcher disappears when Focuswriter is minimized

  This bug has to do with the integration of the full-screen writing app Focuswriter within Unity. It appeared before I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 - probably caused by a an automatically upgraded change that persist in 12.10: When I minimize Focuswriter after it has been in full-screen mode the launcher is invisible - instead of seeing it I just see a rectangle the color of my desktop background where it should have been. The launcher becomes visible if I click the area once but then I'm likely to hit an icon and unwillingly open a program. I've reported the bug to the developer of the program here: https://github.com/gottcode/focuswriter/issues/101 He has labeled the bug "upstream" saying that the bug is can only be fixed in Unity. My questions are: 1) does anyone (perhaps experiencing problems with other full-screen programs) have a solution or workaround so the launcher won't disappear? 2) where can I file a bug report for this problem?

• How to repeat a POST request using Chrome's developer tools?

  Not sure if this is the right stack exchange to ask this, but here goes... I'm trying to wean myself off of Firebug, which has served me very well for a lot of years. One feature that seems to be missing in Chrome's dev tools is the ability to repeat an AJAX POST. In firebug I can right click on the request in the console and hit "Open in new tab" and the request is repeated exactly as it was originally sent. In Chrome, the same action just does a normal GET on the link, without any of the post data. Is there any way to repeat an AJAX POST in Chrome's dev tools?

• Embeding a generic google search with autocomplete - not a custom site search

  Most people's home page is google.com. My homepage is just a custom html page hosted on my computer. I do this because I am a web developer, and I have several projects that I work on a one time, so I like to have quick links to all of them. On that page I usually just have a Link to google.com for when I want to search. But below all of my quick links, I want to add a google search box (with Autocompletions). I first used a simple iframe to embed google.com into the page, but then my search results were confined to that iframe. I wanted to search for something, then my results would open in a new tab. I then came across this code snippet but it doesn't have Autocompletions: http://www.refactory.org/s/google_search/view/2 How can I add Autocompletions to this? Or is there a better way of doing it? • Window colors/shades/decoarations/whatever per instance

  Sometimes I open several instances of one program at the same time and have to switch between them every few seconds and get totally confused as to which is which (they all display similar information, except few bits). I'd like to have each one of them color-coded, different shades, window border, etc or have anything visual to make them differ from one another to ease the confusion. Ideally this would happen automatically when I launch a new instance. I guess this belongs to the window manager so mine is xfce. In one of the window managers I used to use a huge label was displayed each time I switched between workspaces, something like that (with window title or simple number) would do as well. Any clues?

  I search all around the internet till the 6th page of result on google with very precise search, but I can't figure how I can do that. I'm working with last updated ubuntu 12.04 and gnome shell, and I wonder how I can REMOVE and I say remove not clear or avoid feeding but remove completly the "recent item" bookmark you can see in the standard save windows of gnome shell here's a picture (in french it's "Récemment utilisés"): Sorry not enought point to post image to see what I talk about, just do that: -open gedit -type anything -save your file -Now that windows got a "recent item" and I want it DOWN I cannot reward point, but I would if I could for the guy finding a solution, and a bonus point if you find a way to remove it every where it appears in gnome shell.   I'm trying to figure out how to find out if there's a good standard format for sharing business information such as: Business Name Address - well-defined fields Lat,Lng Coords Business Type - maybe from a well-defined enum, my starting point contains Retail,Food,Drink,Coffee,Service Hours of operation - including a spot for 'except laksdasd' or 'sometimes we open late' which could be just plain language Business Keywords - don't know if this is asking too much. how well do http meta tags work in practice? • Administrator user session only shows a terminal

  Weird problem: After upgrading to 11.10 (and I am sure that I worked with it for couple of days). We had a power failure, and now, when open the computer, what I get is a screen, with a scrollable list of users (administrator is one of them). When I select the administrator user, and login, I get on the top left a terminal window. That's it ! I don't see my regular ubuntu desktop. What's wrong? I have tried some of the issues mentioned here: Delete the .Xauthority sudo apt-get update *I had some DNS errors, so had to fic my /etc/resolv.config (works now) please advise.

• Broke my sudoers password, how do I reset it without using sudo?

  I thought it would be a good idea to finally take the password off my little netbook since it has never actually been of any use, and has mostly just slowed down . But when I went to change my password, there wasn't even an option to make it blank, and any attempt to make it a few easy characters was met with "Password too weak". So I did what any good geek would do and popped open the terminal, read the manual entry for passwd and quickly used the -d option to remove the password from my account. It all went well for a couple days (I even managed to also make my keychain password blank) until I tried to update the thing. My sudoers password is not blank, and it's not my old password. I have no idea what it is. How do I reset it (or even better, make it blank) without the use of the sudo command?

• How to make Ubuntu LiveCD be able to use USB Flash drive and external hard drive?

  I am booting up Ubuntu 2012.04 LiveCD... and was able to do /sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and be able to see files in /mnt, which is the main hard drive that can't boot up any more. So to copy files from /mnt to an external hard drive or USB flash drive, I connected a 1TB external hard drive and 2 USB flash drives to the computer, but for some reason, in "File Systems", I can't drag and drop files from /mnt into those external hard drive or USB flash drives? I can't open or look into those drives either... How to make it work?

• Sync ERROR!! LOST MY WORK!

  Sorry my English... hope you understand me... I had a document. Edited it yesterday. But today, when i open it, it was desync. It show an one month earlier version!! I LOST A LOT OF WORK!! And i can't recover my right version of the document! I have a paid plan for Ubuntu One, but this made me very angry. And i don't see a way to recover and don't see a way to talk to somebody! There's no recovery mode like Dropbox... Man, i'm really ANGRY!! REALLY! I'll not recomend Ubuntu One services anymore! I don't know what to do... I lost my work and now i'm one month late! I want to work in companies that are open, innovative, and make a good contribution to the world of computer science. For example, Dropbox looks like a very fun company and its existence is very important. How do I spot this in job advertisements? EDIT: I should note that I live in Australia, so many of the fun companies that I know does not have any office here. I know only a handful of fun companies in Australia – including Google in Sydney. But I don't know that many.

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Machine Interface: IMachine {5eaa9319-62fc-4b0a-843c-0cb1940f8a91} and in another dialog: Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.   I am wondering what are the chances of a career shifter (mid 20's), who have maybe 3-6 months programming experience vs. younger fresh IT/Com Sci graduates. You see, even though I really love programming (Java/J2EE), but nobody gives me a feedback when I apply online. maybe because they preferred IT/ComSci graduates vs a career shifter like me.. So can you advice on how to improve my chance on being hired. How can i get a real-job programming experince if nobody is hiring me. I can make my own projects (working e-commerce site blah blah) but it is still different from the real job. And my codes are working but it still needs a lot of improvement and no one can tell me how to improve it because no one sees it (because I'm doing it alone?).   I'm building an Android app and associated set of web services for uploading/downloading data. I need a basic (no frills) solution for account management (register, login, logout, verify credentials/token). What open source / third party solutions exist for this scenario? I need: create a new account db based on a salt simple web service to create a new account simple web service to authenticate supplied credentials and return some sort of token That's it, I can get by without 'fancy' email activation or password reset for the time being. Are there off-the-shelf components for this? Should I just use a 'blank' django or rails app to get this done? Seems crazy for everyone to be doing CREATE TABLE user_accounts ... Thoughts? • Asterisk not playing custom sounds on Ubuntu Server 11.04

  I've installed Asterisk on my Ubuntu Server, all works fine, excepts playing the custom sounds. Asterisk sounds work, but this file I've uploaded does not play (on other servers it works, it is a .WAV PCM 16bit 8000). • Ubuntu boots into terminal

  When I turn on my computer (a CR-48), I keep loading tty1. I have tried xstart, and all I get is: Fatal server error: Could not create lock file in /tmp/.tX0-lock When I attempted to make the directory (both sudo and not), I received these two errors: sudo: Can't open /var/lib/sudo/don/tty2: Read-only file system (I've gotten other tty's for different virtual terminals) mkdir: cannot create directory '/tmp/tX0-lock': Read-only file system Before I got to the only terminal state, I had the computer moving a few files from a network server to the computer, I put it to sleep without stopping the transfers, and started the computer again away from my home network, and attempted to stop the transfers, the computer than restarted. Running sudo reboot puts me right back in the virtual terminal, and I can't get into any sort of x application.
