• Android Contact Picker

  I was wondering: Is it possible to customize the Android Contact Picker so that it can also allow adding a new contact as a menu option in the default contact list? At the moment, if I invoke the contact picker from my activity, it only displays the default contact list. I would also like the user to be able to create a new contact if it did not exist already. I have searched this quite a lot but do not find appropriate API to do this. There is nothing in ContactContract as far as I can see.

• What weird encoding is movistar Venezuela sms on blackberry using?

  Send an sms using the normal GSM TextMessage API on the BlackBerry, get back garbage. It's not unicode, phone is set to 7-bit send. Byte size is only off by one. Is there some default crypto thing, or some weird encoding they use? This code works most everywhere else in the world; this definitely seems like a movistar problem. The string that comes back is random 7-bit ascii except for a few high order bytes. Needless to say the source input text is totally 7 bit chars, which should work in sms, ISO-8859 and look the same in UTF charsets. Anybody seen this or got sms working in code on movistar VZ blackberries?

  Im looking for navigation software for the Android platform and I have a few requirements: Offline maps. The maps should be stored on the device/memory card so no Internet-connection is required There should be some way to interact with the application "through code"; sending route requests, getting current location perhaps, bringing app to foreground/background, etc. An API so it can be controlled from another application. No monthly fees The only one I found so far to match the above is Sygic Navigation. However, I havent yet been able to communication with the app even though they say that it can be done. Still investigating that...

• Limiting what a .net plugin can access

  I have a web application that can load plugins through reflection. It currently uses Assembly.LoadFrom() and Activator.CreateInstance() to get this done. Right now plugins are loaded into the same AppDomain and have access to anything in my app and anything my app could access. What I'm looking for is a way to limit what classes and methods the plugin can access for security purposes. I want to have all of my classes and methods throw an exception when called unless they are whitelisted. I'd be whitelisting basically all the functions in an API class and a few data transfer objects. I also don't want the plugin to be able to access the filesystem or the database on it's own. I think I can do that with trust levels in a separate AppDomain though. Does anyone out there have any good ideas or resources? Is this something that could be done with Code Access Security or the new Security-Transparent Code features in .net 4?

• How to update (append to) an href in jquery?

  I have a list of links that all go to a google maps api. the links already have the daddr (destination) parameter in them as static. I am using Geo-Location to find the users position and I want to add the saddr (source address) to the links once I get the data. so basically I will need to add something like &saddr=50.1234567,-50.03452 at the tail end of all the links pointing to google maps All the links have a class called directions-link and from this page I have figured out how to change them: $("a.directions-link").attr("href", "http://www.google.com/"); However I only want to append my value to the end of the href without changing what the href already is. • How do I create a create and execute an SQL command using OleDB directly?

  I want to use the OleDB interfaces directly to open a connection to a DB, create a command and executing it (for example using the ICommandText interface). The main thing I can't find is how to create the connection and the command object and how to connect the object that implements the ICommandText to the connection. In ADO I would just use the ActiveConnection property but I want to do this directly on the OleDB interfaces. Also, if anyone can recommend a tutorial to OleDB, ether online or a book, free or not that would be great (but a tutorial and not just a reference / API) I'm using C++ but any native code would be fine.

• UnicodeDecodeError from a GET-parameter in webapp2

  I'm getting a UnicodeDecodeError when recieving a GET-parameter from webapp2 that contains unicode characters, and then using it to do a NDB query. I get the same error message when manually running a unicode() on the parameter in the handler, so there either seems to be a problem in webapp2's URL routing or I've missed something. Preferably, all GET-parameters should be converted to unicode before getting passed into the handler so I don't need to do manual conversions in all of my handlers. I actually think it's worked before in an earlier version. The full error message read: UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xc3 in position 1: ordinal not in range(128) The GET-parameter contains the following string: göteborg. It looks fine when I raise an Exception on it, but gives me an error when I (or NDB) use unicode() on it. EDIT: In NDB, it fails on the following code: File "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\google_appengine\google\appengine\api\datastore_types.py", line 1562, in PackString pbvalue.set_stringvalue(unicode(value).encode('utf-8')) Thanks.

• How to Create a Virtual Windows Drive

  Hello, I'm trying to create a Windows Virtual Drive ( like c:\ ) to map a remote storage. The main purpose is to do it in a clear way to the user. Therefore the user wouldn't know that he is writing/reading from another site. I was searching for available products, and i find that FUSE is not an option in Windows and WebDAV maps directly the drive, and i would like to build a middle layer between windows and remote storage to implement some kind of services. Another alternatives exists, such as Dokan, that is very expensive, and System.IO.IsolatedStorage Namespace, that doesn't seem to explicity create a new Windows Drive. Probably pismo ( http://www.pismotechnic.com/ ) is the thing that mostly matches my requirements but I would know if there is another alternative, including some Windows ( C++ or .NET ) native API to do that. • Android app using 2.x APIs that will also run on 1.x

  I'm working on an Android app in which I would like to use multi-touch. However, I do not want to completely leave out those still running a 1.x OS phone. How do you program the app so that you can use the 2.x multi-touch APIs (or any other higher level API for that matter) and still allow it to gracefully degrade on 1.x systems. If you create a project in Eclipse for 1.x can you even still access the 2.x APIs? Basically I want it to show up in the marketplace and work on all 1.6 and higher phones and just allow access to the higher level functionality if available. Also, if anyone can point me to any data on the number of 1.x devices vs. 2.x devices in use, it would be greatly appreciated.

My question is often we are writing core service layer separately from web/UI layer so we can reuse same services for different UI layer/technology. So practically is it possible to reuse same core layer services without any changes/addition in API with different kind of UI technologies/layers. For e.g. same core service layer with UI technology which supports synchronized request response (e.g. jsp etc.) and non synchronize or event driven UI technology (e.g Ajax, Flex, GWT etc.) or with multiple devices like (computers, mobiles, pdas etc.). Personally I feel its very tough to write core service layer without any knowledge of UI. Looking for thoughts from other people.

• How could a share a Google map mashup with my own datapoints and links back to my site?

  I currently have a map mashup that has locations that I'm populating from my own database. A few users would like to also show that map on their site(s). I'd like to give them the ability to do that, but would like to retain the actual functionality of the map on my own site: like add "stuff" to places on the map through my a web form on my site. I could open the entire API to allow them to create their own form along with the data points, but most of the people wanting to put up the map aren't developers, they are just enthusiasts that have put together a personal page that they want to spice up. I was thinking I could just provide a JavaScript of some kind that they could then take to place on their site, or maybe an IFRAME of some type, or...any ideas? Anyone implemented this? TIA.

• Android camera being landscaped in some devices

  Im new to Android and I tried a tutorial for camera API. The tutorial works fine. When I use HTC desire I can see the camera view in both portrait and landscape, but when I use Samsung Galaxy I get a the camera view only in a landscaped view. I tried the following code to rotate the camera view as well.. Camera.Parameters parameters = camera.getParameters(); parameters.setRotation(90); then the camera doesn't work as expected. (screen splits into 4 and not clear). Does anyone have an idea for this issue ? Thanks.

• C++11: thread_local or array of OpenCL 1.2 cl_kernel objects?

  I need to run several C++11 threads (GCC 4.7.1) parallely in host. Each of them needs to use a device, say a GPU. As per OpenCL 1.2 spec (p. 357): All OpenCL API calls are thread-safe75 except clSetKernelArg. clSetKernelArg is safe to call from any host thread, and is safe to call re-entrantly so long as concurrent calls operate on different cl_kernel objects. However, the behavior of the cl_kernel object is undefined if clSetKernelArg is called from multiple host threads on the same cl_kernel object at the same time. An elegant way would be to use thread_local cl_kernel objects and the other way I can think of is to use an array of these objects such that i'th thread uses i'th object. As I have not implemented these earlier I was wondering if any of the two are good or are there better ways of getting things done. TIA, S

• Can I learn the iPhone SDK and complete an app by September?

  Hi everyone, I'm wondering if it's realistically possible to learn the iPhone SDK and complete an app by the end of this summer. The app shouldn't be too difficult, it would just interact with my site's API and essentially just fetch, create, and edit resources. I already have a little experience with the SDK (and I'm comfortable with Objective-C), so I'm not completely new to it. Although here I things I don't know how to do and what I'd need to learn: Log in to my site using basic http authentication and store the user's username/password for all future requests Implement a toolbar at the bottom to navigate between different views Fetch and parse xml into list items Do POST/PUT requests to create/edit a resource on my server Are there any good resources available to learn how to do those tasks above? • Doing a POST with cURL but server shows GET

• Using std::bad_alloc for C pointers

  I'm using a library written in C in a C++ project. I'd like to use C++ exceptions to handle C errors. In particular, it would be nice to have an exception thrown if an allocation fails. I can do this in constructors of classes which hold C-style pointers to C structs : if (c_object == NULL) throw std::bad_alloc(); But if the class is responsible for several C objects they are no ways of free-ing all already allocated pointers since the destructor isn't called. I have a feeling I could use smart-pointers, but I don't have much experience with them. What's more, I have to have access to the original C pointers to use the C api properly. Is there an elegant solution to this ?

  Hi, My c++ program needs to maintain 2 list of objects. list inuse; list free; So objects A can even in 'inuse' list or in 'free' list, but not both. http://www.cplusplus.com/reference/stl/list/ I am think of using 'list' as the data structure for my lists. My questions are 1. why i can't randomly access an elmenet in the list, I look at the above api, I don't see a way to get inuse[2]; 2. How can I remove an element in the list? There is an erase(), but how can I use it to remove element #2? And after I remove element 2? will STL list fill the erased spot automatically? e.g. #3 will become #2, #4 will become #3 and so on? • Possibility of initiating playback of flash video on headless server through the terminal

  Hey so I have a website which has video's gathered from places around the web, primarily youtube but a few other's as well. Now I am wondering if there is some way to check link's to make sure they are still available through a unix shell. (My idea is to run a cron to check videos are still available and if not delete them.) I am aware i could use user to do this but it always bothered me and was wondering if there is somehow to check the playback of a flash video though the terminal . Any insight into this would be awesome as I haven't found much on the web. Also note ideally the tech. will work on all video type's including html5. update So it's occured to me that through the you tube api, I could check the status of the video's coming from youtube (which is a start). But I would love to know if there's something else that is not player specific but rather just calls the video to play similar to how a user would.

  Everybody knows that java IO is blocking, and java NIO is non-blocking. In IO you will have to use the thread per client pattern, in NIO you can use one thread for all clients. Now my question follows: is it possible to make a non-blocking design using only the Java IO api. (not NIO) I was thinking about a pattern like this (obviously very simplified); List<Socket> li; for (Socket s : li) { InputStream in = s.getInputStream(); byte[] data = in.available(); in.read(data); // processData(data); (decoding packets, encoding outgoing packets } Also note that the client will always be ready for reading data. What are your opinions on this? Will this be suitable for a server that should at least hold a few hundred of clients without major performance issues?
