• Project setup for creating third party libraries for Android

  Hi all, I am creating a library for Android that others can include in their own project. So far I have been working on it as a normal Java project with JDK 1.6 setup as system library. This works just fine in Eclipse when I add the android.jar. The issue comes when I try to my build script. I am running Gradle and doing a normal compile and test build cycle. My thoughts were that it does not matter if I compile it with a normal JDK, since this is not a standalone application. The benefits by creating a normal Java project is that Gradle does support this much better. My project also does not contain any UI at all. However, the problem is that of course android.jar and the JDK contains lots of the same classes and I think that this is what messes up my build script. Everything crashes when running the tests (the tests are in the same project under src/test/java). My question is, how should I create this project that is meant to be included in Android projects as a third party library? Should I create it as an Android project in Eclipse even though I am only creating a library that does not use any of the UI features? Also, should the tests be in a separate project?   I have a description and design of a website and I need to redesign it to allow for new requirements. The website's purpose is the offering of government's contracts and bidding opportunities for different businesses.I'm dealing with the 3-tier architecture PHP website comprising of the user-interface tier(client's web browser),business logic layer(Apache web server with PHP engine in it and a couple of applications running within a web server as well) and a database layer(local mysql database). Now,i need to redesign it to su???rt distributed n-tier architecture and specify how I would go about it.After long hours of research i came to this solution: business logic should be separated into presentation and purely business logic tier to allow for n-layer architecture(user-interface,presentation tier,b.logic and data tier).I have decided to use ??? just for the presentation(since the original existing website is in PHP) and use it within apache web server.In the business logic i want to use J2?? implementation technology instead of implementing it in PHP(i.e using Zend app.server and smarty template) cz J2EE can provide much more essential container services which are essential for business logic,its robustness,maintainability and different critical business operations which will be carried out by the g?v?rnment's website.So,particularly,i want to use J??ss app.server with ?J? business objects in it which would provide all the b.logic in java and would interact with the database and so forth.In order to connect PHP on a web server with java on app.server i'm gonna use PHP/Java bridge API (or maybe Quercus or SOAP is better?).Finally,i have my data tier with mysql which will communicate with b.logic via JD??.Payment system application in ???.server is gonna use S??? to talk with credit card company. From your professional point of view,does it sound like a good way of redesigning the original website to allow for n-tier architecture considering the specifics of the website and the criticality of its operations?(payment system is included in it)or u would personally prefer to use PHP business objects for business logic as well instead of J2EE?If you have any wiser recommendation or some alternative,please let me know what is right or wrong in my current solution. • Using EclipseLink

  I am still new to Java and Eclipse and I'm trying to get my application to connect to a database. I think I want to use EclipseLink, but all of the documentation on the matter assumes you already know everything there is to know about everything. I keep getting linked back to this tutorial: http://www.vogella.de/articles/JavaPersistenceAPI/article.html But it's basically useless because it doesn't tell you HOW to do anything. For the Installation section, it tells you to download EclipseLink and gives you a link to the download page, but doesn't tell you what to do with it after you download. The download page doesn't either. I used the "Install new software" option in Eclipse to install EclipseLink into Eclipse, but it gave me like 4 different options, none of which are explained anywhere. It gave me options JPA, MOXy, SDO, etc, but I don't know which one I need. I just installed them all. Everything on the web assumes you are already a Java guru and things that are second nature to Java devs are never explained, so it's very frustrating for someone trying to learn. So how do I install and USE EclipseLink in my project and what do I need to do to connect it to a Microsoft SQL server? Again, I am new to all of this so I have no clue what to do. • Checkstyle: cannot summarise issues per author ?

  Hi all, I'm trying to use checkstyle for a java project but I can't seem to get it working properly: While it apparently runs smoothly, the html report doesn't give any info per authors as it should, i.e. the authors table is empty. The thing is I don't know how checkstyle identify an author. Does it look at the java doc tag @author ? at the class level or at the method level ? • Steps in creating a web service using Axis2 - The client code

  I am trying to create a web service, my tools of trade are: ** Axis2, Eclipse, Tomcat, Ant ** I need to create a web service from Code, i.e. Write a basic java class which will have the methods to be declared in the WSDL. Then use java2WSDL.sh to create my WSDL. So, is this approach correct: Write my Java class with actual business logic package packageNamel; public class Hello{ public void World(String name) { SOP("Hello" + name); } } Now, when I pass this Hello.java to java2WSDL.sh, this will give me the WSDL. Finally, I will write the services.xml file, and create the Hello.aar with following dir structure: Hello.aar packageName Hello.class META-INF services.xml MANIFEST.MF Hello.WSDL Now, I assume, my service will be deployed when I put the aar in tomcat1/webapps/axis2/WEB-INF/services But, here comes my problem, HOW DO I ACCESS THE METHOD World(String name)???!!, i.e. I am clueless about the client code! • what is the exact way to use Endorsed directory in jdk1.6

  I want to upgrade my jaxws to 2.2 (jdk1.6 comes bundled with jaxws 2.1). My jdk is (I did not install public jre): java version "1.6.0_20" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_20-b02) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 16.3-b01, mixed mode) In jaxws' own doc they explain how to do it: One way to fix this is to copy jaxws-api.jar and jaxb-api.jar into JRE endorsed directory, which is $JAVA_HOME/lib/endorsed (or $JDK_HOME/jre/lib/endorsed) But I am not sure this is having any effect in my installation. For starters I have only defined %JAVA_HOME%. And folder $JAVA_HOME/lib/endorsed is inexistant, so I created and copied the two jars. But if I do (wsgen is a tool from jaxws) wsgen -version I still get: JAX-WS RI 2.1.6 in JDK 6 I also tried creating folder JAVA_HOME\jre\lib\endorsed (notice that in the doc they say JDK_HOME, but as I only have JAVA_HOME I used this path). Still same wsgen output. My questions are: What is the difference between JAVA_HOME and JDK_HOME in the doc page? anything significant or just two ways to refer to JAVA_HOME ? Is 'wsgen -version' a valid way to check jaxws version that is used or this always calls the exe in the original jdk, but it does not mean endorsed jars will be used? Anyone knows very detailed steps to install jaxws2.2 in a jdk.16?

From the various online articles on Java 7 I have come to know that Java 7 will be having collection literals like the following: List<String> fruits = [ "Apple", "Mango", "Guava" ]; Set<String> flowers = { "Rose", "Daisy", "Chrysanthemum" }; Map<Integer, String> hindiNums = { 1 : "Ek", 2 : "Do", 3 : "Teen" }; My questions are: 1] Wouldn't it have been possible to provide a static method of in all of the collection classes which could be used as follows: List<String> fruits = ArrayList.of("Apple", "Mango", "Guava"); IMO this looks as good as the literal version and is also reasonably concise. Why then did they have to invent a new syntax? 2] When I say List<String> fruits = [ "Apple", "Mango", "Guava" ]; what List would I actually get? Would it be ArrayList or LinkedList or something else? Thanks.

• Help to understand the issue with protected method

  I'm reading Sybex Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide April 2005 (ISBN0782144195). This book is for java developers who wants to pass java certification. After a chapter about access modifiers (along with other modifiers) I found the following question (#17): True or false: If class Y extends class X, the two classes are in different packages, and class X has a protected method called abby(), then any instance of Y may call the abby() method of any other instance of Y. This question confused me a little. As far as I know you can call protected method on any variable of the same class (or subclasses). You cannot call it on variables, that higher in the hierarchy than you (e.g. interfaces that you implement). For example, you cannot clone any object just because you inherit it. But the questions says nothing about variable type, only about instance type. I was confused a little and answered "true". The answer in the book is False. An object that inherits a protected method from a superclass in a different package may call that method on itself but not on other instances of the same class. There is nothing here about variable type, only about instance type. This is very strange, I do not understand it. Can anybody explain what is going on here?

• Where to put external archives to configure running in Eclipse?

  As a Java/Eclipse noob coming from a Visual Studio .NET background, I'm trying to understand how to set up my run/debug environment in the Eclipse IDE so I can start stepping through code. I have built my application with separate src and bin hierarchies for each library project, and each project has its own jar. For example, in a Windows environment, I have something like: c:\myapp\myapp_main\src\com\mycorp\myapp\main ...and a parallel "bin" tree like this: c:\myapp\myapp_main\bin\com\mycorp\myapp\main Other supporting projects are, similarly: **c:\myapp\myapp_util\src\com\mycorp\myapp\uti**l (and a parallel "bin" tree.) ... etc. So, I end up with, e.g., myapp_util.jar in the ...\myapp_util\bin... path and then add that as an external archive to my myapp_main project. I also use utilities like gluegen-rt.jar, which I add ad external dependencies to the projects requiring them. I have been able to run outside of the Eclipse environment, by copying all my project jars, gluegen-rt DLL, etc., into a "lib" subfolder of some directory and executing something like: java -Djava.library.path=lib -DfullScreen=false -cp lib/gluegen-rt.jar;lib/myapp_main.jar;lib/myapp_util.jar; com.mycorp.myapp.Main When I first pressed F11 to debug, however, I got a message about something like /com/sun/../glugen... not being found by the class loader. So, to debug, or even just run, in Ecplipse, I tried setting up my VM arguments in the Galileo Debug - (Run/Debug) Configurations to be the command line above, beginning at "-Djava.libary.path...". I've put a lib subdirectory - just like the above with all jars and the native gluegen DLL - in various places, such as beneath the folder that my main jar is built in and as a subfolder of my Ecplipse starting workspace folder, but now Eclipse can't find the main class: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com.mycorp.myapp.Main Although the Classpath says that it is using the "default classpath", whatever that is. Bottom line, how do I assemble the constituent files of a multi-project application so that I can run or debug in Ecplipse?

• Eclipse plugin installation/update issues

  I've installed the following Team repository plugins (along with it's dependencies) for Eclipse Helios (using Eclipse updater). MercurialEclipse 1.7.1 Subclipse 1.6.17 Subversive SVN All of these are the latest in Eclipse Marketplace. My problem is when I go to Eclipse "Preferences", under "Team" I only see CVS but under Eclipse Marketplace, I can see that these plugins are installed (it gives me an option to uninstall it). How do I configure my Team repositories to reflect under "Team" in Preferences? Also, there is an update for "Eclipse IDE for Java EE developers, but when I try to update it, the following error occurs: Cannot complete the install because of a conflicting dependency. • JVM terminates when launching eclipse with J2SE 6.0 on mac os x (need J2SE 6.0 for Oracle enterprise

  I know my issue has party been addressed at this link http://stackoverflow.com/questions/245803/jvm-terminates-when-launching-eclipse-mat-on-mac-os-with-j2se-60 but it was a year+ ago.. plus the link that's provided in there http://landonf.bikemonkey.org/static/soylatte/ does not seem to be alive (i mean the download section on that link no longer provide the 32-bit port of j2se 6.0 for mac osx 10.5) I am trying to run eclipse 3.5 on mac OSX 10.5. It works fine with J2SE 5.0. But when I installed the Oracle enterprise pack for eclipse - it requires to start eclipse with J2SE 6.0 JVM otherwise it will get disabled. Here's the exact message I get from it - "You are running Eclipse on Java VM version: 1.5.0_22 Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse requires Java version 6 or higher. Click next to configure a compatible Java VM." It asks me to point to J2SE 6.0 JVM, when I do that (i.e point it to "/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home") , it asks to restart eclipse , when I do that, eclipse just bombs .. with JVM terminated error .. SO I need to start eclipse with J2SE 6.0 JVM but eclipse needs carbon which is only available in 32 bits and hence I cann't start eclipse with J2SE 6.0 JVM which is only available in 64bit mode from mac. And the site providing 32 bit port of J2SE 6.0 JVM does not seem to be active anymore.. Can someone help me on this issue, Thanks in advance,

• Setting database-agnostic default column timestamp using Hibernate

  I'm working on a java project full of Hibernate (3.3.1) mapping files that have the following sort of declaration for most domain objects. <property name="dateCreated" generated="insert"> <column name="date_created" default="getdate()" /> </property> The problem here is that getdate() is an MSSQL specific function, and when I'm using something like H2 to test subsections of the project, H2 screams that getdate() isn't a recognized function. It's own timestamping function is current_timestamp(). I'd like to be able to keep working with H2 for testing, and wanted to know whether there was a way of telling Hibernate "use this database's own mechanism for retrieving the current timestamp". With H2, I've come up with the following solution. CREATE ALIAS getdate AS $$ java.util.Date now() { return new java.util.Date(); } $$; CALL getdate(); It works, but is obviously H2 specific. I've tried extending H2Dialect and registering the function getdate(), but that doesn't seem to be invoked when Hibernate is creating tables. Is it possible to abstract the idea of a default timestamp away from the specific database engine?

• How to run an app in Tomcat?

  Hi! I have put my project in tomcat_home/webapps/ directory. The structure is : project_name/WEB-INF/classes. in WEB-INF i have put my web.xml descriptor. The problem is that when i try to run the application, it doesn't find the files. The error is: The requested resource () is not available. • Find all substrings of a string - StringIndexOutOfBoundsException

  I created class Word. Word has a constructor that takes a string argument and one method getSubstrings which returns a String containing all substring of word, sorted by length. For example, if the user provides the input "rum", the method returns a string that will print like this: r u m ru um rum I want to concatenate the substrings in a String, separating them with a newline ("\n"). Then return the string. Code: public class Word { String word; public Word(String word) { this.word = word; } /** * Gets all the substrings of this Word. * @return all substrings of this Word separated by newline */ public String getSubstrings() { String str = ""; int i, j; for (i = 0; i < word.length(); i++) { for (j = 0; j < word.length(); j++) { str = word.substring(i, i + j); str += "\n"; } } return str; } But it throws exception: java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: -1 at java.lang.String.substring(String.java:1911) I stuck at this point. Maybe, you have other suggestions according this method signature public String getSubstrings(). How to solve this issue?

• Iterator performance contract (and use on non-collections)

  If all that you're doing is a simple one-pass iteration (i.e. only hasNext() and next(), no remove()), are you guaranteed linear time performance and/or amortized constant cost per operation? Is this specified in the Iterator contract anywhere? Are there data structures/Java Collection which cannot be iterated in linear time? java.util.Scanner implements Iterator<String>. A Scanner is hardly a data structure (e.g. remove() makes absolutely no sense). Is this considered a design blunder? Is something like PrimeGenerator implements Iterator<Integer> considered bad design, or is this exactly what Iterator is for? (hasNext() always returns true, next() computes the next number on demand, remove() makes no sense). Similarly, would it have made sense for java.util.Random implements Iterator<Double>? Should a type really implement Iterator if it's effectively only using one-third of its API? (i.e. no remove(), always hasNext())

• Web Start Application built on NetBeans Platform doesn't create desktop shortcut & start menu item

  I've created a NetBeans Platform application that is launched using Java Web Start. I built the WAR file using the 'Build JNLP Application'-command in Netbeans. I've added a desktop shortcut and menu item to the JNLP file, but for some reason, these are not created when the application is launched. However, when I go to: Control Panel - Java - Temporary Internet Files - View - Select my application Click 'Install shortcuts to the selected application' the desktop and menu shortcuts are created correctly. Also, in the Java Console, the Shortcut Creation option is set to the following (the default, I presume): Prompt user if hinted Below is a snippet of my JNLP file: <jnlp spec="6.0+" codebase="$$codebase"> <information> <title>${app.title}</title> <vendor>SomeVendor (Pty) Ltd</vendor> <description>Some description</description> <icon href="${app.icon}"/> <shortcut online="true"> <desktop/> <menu submenu="MyApp"/> </shortcut> </information> ... • Control Oracle Forms with outside program

  I work at a company that uses the Forms based Oracle 11i. A lot of employees complain of the redundancy of data entry and I want to write a program that will ease some of that pain since all attempts to ask IT to do it have failed. The problem is, since Oracle Forms are Java based there are no "controls" as there would be on say a windows application or an HTML based form. Does anyone know of a way to tell the PC to (example only) click edit field 3 on the RMA creation form and then enter the data? The only way I can programmatically navigate Oracle is with hotkeys and it's very unreliable. I'm not concerned about the language or learning a new application to resolve this issue. I currently know (elementary to Intermediate levels) Java, VB.NET and will be taking C++ in school. Is there a tool, bridge, element spy of some sort that will allow me to send commands to elements on the forms? edit APC sez: Oracle Forms over the web run as a Java applet. I mention this because it may be relevant to your responses.

Am I missing something? I am using eclipse with maven. Also when I try to deploy it for tomcat 6.0 I get following warnings: WARN net.sourceforge.stripes.util.ResolverUtil - Could not examine class 'stripesbook/ext/ContactFormatter.class' due to a java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError with message: Bad version number in .class file (unable to load class stripesbook.ext.ContactFormatter) I have checked to be sure that I am compiling with Java 5(set JDK compiler to 1.5) instead of 1.6 (Java 6); but didn't work out for me and still have problems running spring-stripes integrated project.

• How do I lookup a JNDI Datasource from outside a web container?

  I have the following environment set up: Java 1.5 Sun Application Server 8.2 Oracle 10 XE Struts 2 Hibernate I'm interested to know how I can write code for a Java client (i.e. outside of a web application) that can reference the JNDI datasource provided by the application server. The ports for the Sun Application Server are all at their defaults. There is a JNDI datasource named jdbc/xxxx in the server configuration, but I noticed that the Hibernate configuration for the web application uses the name java:comp/env/jdbc/xxxx instead. Most of the examples I've seen so far involve code like Context ctx = new InitialContext(); ctx.lookup("jdbc/xxxx"); But it seems I'm either using the wrong JNDI name, or I need to configure a jndi.properties or other configuration file to correctly point to a listener? I have appserv-rt.jar from the Sun Application Server which has a jndi.properties inside of it, but it does not seem to help. • How to instantiate spring bean without being referenced from aop:aspect

  Using Spring and Java; I have a pointcut which works OK. Now I want to remove the pointcut and AOP from the spring and just trigger the event with an event from inside the java code but I want "myAdvice" bean still called via Spring and its properties set. I want to get ridoff all advice things even in java code, no more advice or any trace of AOP, I already have a nice event system working. I just want to instantiate my bean via Spring. When I remove the second code block (one starting with "aop:config") then I noticed the bean "myAdvice" is not called and instantiated anymore. • ClassCastException When Calling an EJB Remotely that Exists on Same Server

  I have 2 ejbs. Ejb-A that calls Ejb-B. They are not in the same Ear. For portability Ejb-B may or may not exist on the same server. (There is an external property file that has the provider URLs of Ejb-B. I have no control over this.) Example Code: in Ejb-A EjbBDelegate delegateB = EjbBDelegateHelper.getRemoteDelegate(); // lookup from list of URLs from props... BookOfMagic bom = delegateB.getSomethingInteresting(); Use Cases/Outcomes: When Ejb-B DOES NOT EXIST on the same server as Ejb-A, everything works correctly. (it round-robbins through the URLs) When Ejb-B DOES EXIST on the same server, and Ejb-A happens to call Ejb-B on the same server, everything works correctly. When Ejb-B DOES EXIST on the same server, and Ejb-A calls Ejb-B on a different server, I get: javax.ejb.EJBException: nested exception is: java.lang.ClassCastException: $Proxy126 java.lang.ClassCastException: $Proxy126 I'm using Weblogic 10.0, Java 5, EJB3 Basically, if Ejb-B Exists on the server, it must be called ONLY on that server. Which leads me to believe that the class is getting loaded by a local classloader (on deployment?), then when called remotely, a different classloader is loading it. (causing the Exception) But it should work, as it should be Serialized into the destination classloader... What am I doing wrong?? Also, when reproducing this locally, Ejb-A would favor the Ejb-B on the same server, so it was difficult to reproduce. But this wasn't the case on other machines. NOTE: This all worked correctly for EJB2

• Which book should I choose?

  Hi guys, I'm looking for a good read on object oriented design. The two books I'm currently looking Head First Design Patterns and Head First Object object-oriented analysis & design. They seem very similar when looking at the contents and browsing through available sample text. Which one would be the best choice? About myself: I have a bachelor in computer science and I am currently studying Msc. Software Quality Engineering (read Software Engineering with focus on Quality). I am already confident in object-oriented design and have a lot of programming courses in my backpack. I have done games in c++, courses in advanced java programming (I am SCJP certified), but my preferred language is C#. I have also worked with Java for the last 7 months while studying. I am currently also studying for certificates in C# (apart from my usual studies). So I believe I have the prerequisites of actually understanding the contents of both books. Reason: I just want to be better and keep evolving as a programmer. I think it is fun. I believe Bert Bates and Kathy Sierra are involved in both these books and I have previously read their SCJP preparation book in java. I really do enjoy their style of writing. Other books which I am considering are: Clean Code: A Handbook Of Agile Software Craftsmanship Thx in advance Sebastian
