• Persevering & Friday Night Big Ideas

  by Jim Lein, Oracle Midsize Programs Every successful company, personal accomplishment, and philanthropic endeavor starts with one good idea. I have my best ideas on Friday evenings. The creative side of my brain is stimulated by end of week endorphins. Free thinking. Anything is possible. But, as my kids love to remind me, most of Dad's Friday Night Big Ideas (FNBIs) fizzle on the drawing board. Usually there's one barrier blocking the way that seems insurmountable by noon on Monday. For example, trekking the 486 mile Colorado Trail is on my bucket list. Since I have a job, I'll have to do it in bits and pieces--day hikes, weekends, and a vacation week here and there. With my trick neck, backpacking is not an option. How to survive equip myself for overnight backcountry travel was that one seemingly insurmountable barrier.  Persevering Lewis and Clark wouldn't have given up so I explored options and, as I blogged about back in December, I had an FNBI to hire llamas to carry my load. Last weekend, that idea came to fruition. Early Saturday morning, I met up with Bill, the owner of Antero Llamas, for an overnight training expedition along segment 14 of the Colorado Trail with a string of twelve llamas. It was a crash course on learning how to saddle, load, pasture, and mediate squabbles. Amazingly, we left the trailhead with me, the complete novice, at the lead. Instead of trying to impart three decades of knowledge on me in two days, Bill taught me two things: "Go With the Flow" and "Plan B". It worked. There were times I would be lost in thought for long stretches of time until one snort would remind me that I had a string of twelve llamas trailing behind. A funny thing happened along the trail... Up until last Saturday, my plan had been to trek all 28 segments of the trail east to west and sequentially. Out of some self-imposed sense of decorum. That plan presented myriad logistical challenges such as impassable snow pack on the Continental Divide when segment 6 is up next. On Sunday, as we trekked along the base of 14,000 ft peaks, I applied Bill's llama handling philosophy to my quest and came up with a much more realistic and enjoyable strategy for achieving my goal.  Seize opportunities to hike regardless of order. Define my own segments. Go west to east for awhile if it makes more sense. Let the llamas carry more creature comforts. Chill out.  I will still set foot on all 486 miles of the trail. Technically, the end result will be the same.And I and my traveling companions--human and camelid--will enjoy the journey more. Much more. Got Big Ideas of Your Own? Check out Tongal. • Process Oracle OER Events using a simple Web Service

  This post provides an example of a simple web service that processes Oracle Enterprise Repository (OER) Events. The service receives events from OER and utilizes the OER REX API to implement simple OER automations for selected event types. The web service example implements the following: When a new Asset is Submitted to OER: The Asset is automatically Accepted by a defined user. When an Asset is Accepted: The Asset is automatically assigned  to a defined user for review. If the accepted asset is of type Service The Version meta data attribute is set based on the version id contained in the suffix of the Service Namespace.      When an Asset is Registered: If the registered Asset is of type Service The related Assets ( Interface and Endpoint are also automatically registered. The sample web service is not intended to replace the out of the Box OER BPM Based workflows, but the service can be utilized in cases where only simple automation is required and the developer has a Java skill set. The service is a lightweight web application that can be easily deployed to the same server as OER or on a different server. Read the complete post here

  Hi guys Is there a tool or script or some other way of knowing what computer name a specific user is currently logged on to? Or even was logged on to? Say the user "HRDrone" is working on his machine whose hostname is "HRStation01". I, sitting at my sysadmin desk, only know that the username is "HRDrone". Any way i can find out that he is logged on to "HRStation01" without asking the user? AD event viewer? anything? Thanks!

• GoldenGate 12c - MySQL Active-Active Replication Setup

  Active-active  (also called Master-Master or Bi-Directional) replication captures data changes from two or more systems and replicat the changes to synchronize the data.  Active-Active replication is often needed for high availability, load balancing and scaling out purposes.   Oracle GoldenGate is known to be one of the first and the best replication tool handling active-active replications. As of Oracle GoldenGate 12c, it provides (Refer to Oracle GoldenGate 12.1.2 Documentation - Configuring Oracle GoldenGate for Active-Active High Availability for more information) the followings: Robust loop-back prevention Comprehensive conflict resolution and detection support Heterogeneous support across different database versions and operation systems.  Oracle GoldenGate supports active-active configurations for DB2 on z/OS, LUW, and IBM i, MySQL, Oracle, SQL/MX,SQL Server, Sybase, and Teradata. The key setup is to avoid the replication data  looping. Oracle GoldenGate for MySQL uses the information in the replication checkpoint table to identify the transaction applied by replicats and thus avoid extracting those transactions by Oracle GoldenGate extracts. The example setup in the extract in MySQL 5.5 instance is shown as follows.  TRANLOGOPTIONS ALTLOGDEST "/home/oracle/software/mysql_5.5.38/data/binlog/bin-log.index" FILTERTABLE test.checkpoint_tbl Setting up an active-active replication is often more complicated than this and requires the following additional considerations. • Wamp website stop responding till restarting services [on hold]

  My first message here after many non conclusive research about my problem. So I'm administering a drupal website and I have migrate all application to new version: PHP 5.3.5 - 5.4.16 Apache 2.2.17 - 2.4.4 MySQL 5.1.36 - 5.6.12 With the new Wamp version. Also update Drupal from 6.19 to 6.30. I have update it by uninstalling everything in the server and reinstalling the new version. Since this update the website sometimes become unresponsive till we restart wamp. No warrning and no error in event log. Can somebody help me with this problem? I also cannot enable SSL, after configuring it wamp won't start. I have do many research and test but I still have many issue. • Monitoring bespoke software with Zenoss

  We've got a lot of back-end applications that we need to monitor the performance of (metrics such as orders waiting to be processed, time since last run, etc). Currently, this is done by an in-house watchdog application that fires out emails whenever a threshold is exceeded, but there's no way to acknowledge an issue and squelch these alerts. Rather than build our own complete alerting system, we'd like to tie in to the Zenoss installation we use to monitor our servers. I've found a few articles on creating events programmatically, but I'd rather Zenoss itself monitors the values that the current watchdog app is looking at (so we get the benefits of graphing and history as well). Is it possible, then, to programmatically provide a data feed (rather than an event) to Zenoss? Or is there another way to go about this?

• Why are there tons of PHP processes open on my server?

  Today I saw that a website of mine isn't working so I ssh'd to the server and executed ps -eF. I see about 200 PHP processes that are running all for 4 hours. Apache is built with mpm event and mod fcgid. I killed all the PHP processes and now it's running fine, why does this happen? is this expected behavior? I don't really understand how processes how Apache keeps track of the number of PHP processes and their process IDs, so it would be nice if someone can also give some reference when I can read about this. Also, I used the "ab" command (Apache Benchmark) to see if this happens all the time, so I ran it about 4-5 times with 30 concurrent requests and again there are like 150 PHP processes running, when I keep running "ab" now it doesn't spawn more processes and the website is still working. Please shed some light on this! Thank you :)

• Message Driven Bean JMS integration

  In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 and above the product introduced the concept of real time JMS integration within the Framework for interfacing. Customer familiar with older versions of the Framework will recall that we used a component called the Multi-purpose Listener (MPL) which was a very light service bus for calling interface channels (including JMS). The MPL is not supplied with all products and customers prefer to use Oracle SOA Suite and native methods rather then MPL. In Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1 (and for Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2 via Patches 9454971, 9256359, 9672027 and 9838219) we introduced real time JMS integration natively for outbound JMS integration and using Message Driven Beans (MDB) for incoming integration. The outbound integration has not changed a lot between releases where you create an Outbound Message Type to indicate the record types to send out, create a JMS sender (though now you use the Real Time Sender) and then create an External System definition to complete the configuration. When an outbound message appears in the table of the type and external system configured (via a business event such as an algorithm or plug-in script) the Oracle Utilities Application Framework will place the message on the configured Queue linked to the JMS Sender. The inbound integration has changed. In the past you created XAI Receivers and specified configuration about what types of transactions to process. This is now all configuration file driven. The configuration files for the Business Application Server (ejb-jar.xml and weblogic-ejb-jar.xml) define Message Driven Beans and the queues to monitor. When a message appears on the queue, the MDB processes it through our web services interface. Configuration of the MDB can be native (via editing the configuration files) or through the new user exit capabilities (which is aimed at maintaining custom configuration across upgrades). The latter is better as you build fragments of configuration to make it easier to maintain. In the next few weeks a number of new whitepaper will be released to illustrate the features of the Oracle WebLogic JMS and Oracle SOA Suite integration capabilities.

• Monitor network connectivity in WP7 apps

  Most interesting Windows Phone apps rely on some network service for their functionality. So at some point in your app you may need to know programmatically if there is network connection available or not. For example, the Translator by Moth app relies on the Bing Translation service for translations. When a request for translation (text or voice) is made, the network call may fail. The failure reason is not evident from any of the return results, so I check the connection to see if it is present. Dependent on that, a different message is shown to the user. Before the translation phase is even reached, at the app start up time the Bing service is queried for its list of  languages; in that case I don't want to show the user a message and instead want to be notified when the network is available in order to send the query out again. So for those two requirements (which I imagine are common in other apps) I wrote a simple wrapper MyNetwork static class to the framework APIs: Call once MyNetwork.MonitorNetworkAvailability() method so it monitors the network change At any time check the MyNetwork.IsConnected property to check for network presence Subscribe to its MyNetwork.ConnectionEstablished event Optionally, during debugging use its MyNetwork.ChangeStatus method to simulate a change in network status As usual, there may be better ways to achieve this, but this class works perfectly for my scenarios. • Understanding the Linux boot process, subsystem initialization, & udev rules?

  I'm creating UDEV rules for automounting external drives on a headless server, much in the same way as Gnome-VFS does automounting during a user session. I'm concerned with the rule's behavior at boot-time. There's a good chance one of these drives will be connected during a boot, and I'd prefer any connected drives get mounted in the right place. The drives might be either USB or Firewire, and they are mounted from a shell script fired off by UDEV on detecting an "add". Here are my questions: When UDEV runs the mount for these devices at boot, will the system be ready to mount it? Or will the script get triggered too early? If it's too early, what's a good way for a script to tell that the system isn't ready yet (so sleep a while before checking again)? The UDEV rule matches ACTION=="add". Does this event even fire at system boot?

• Autoinstall of Microsoft Security Essentials give random error message

  I'm using wpkg to auto install Microsoft security essentials on WinXP. At the first login after the installer finishes I get an error message as msseces.exe starts. After a reboot the message goes away. The error message indicates a random access restriction. "An error has occured in the program. Try to open it again. If this problem continues, you'll need to reinstall Microsoft Security Essentials from the Microsoft Download Center. Error code: 0x80070005" Firstly: Does anyone know why I get this error message? Second: How do I debug this kind of problems? The event log doesn't seem to contain anything useful. Is there a tool to detect and list denied system calls?

• Why would a terminal server be kicking users off after about 5 minutes?

  I have a terminal server that was restored from an old 1U server to an IBM HS20 Blade running ESXi. The restore was using shadow protect hardware independent restore. All appeared to be functioning well but we're finding that users are being periodically kicked off after around 5 minutes or so. The interesting thing is it doesn't appear to be a simple disconnect but the whole session has gone like it was logged out. There is nothing significant in the event log, and certainly nothing from terminal services that is logged. I've also checked the client computers and from the client computers logged into our other terminal server and there wasn't any issues there. It doesn't appear to be network related. Any ideas?

• Green (Screen) Computing

  I recently was given an assignment to create a UX where a user could use the up and down arrow keys, as well as the tab and enter keys to move through a Silverlight datagrid that is going be used as part of a high throughput data entry UI. And to be honest, I’ve not trapped key codes since I coded JavaScript a few years ago.  Although the frameworks I’m using made it easy, it wasn’t without some trial and error.    The other thing that bothered me was that the customer tossed this into the use case as they were delivering the use case.  Fine.  I’ll take a whack at anything and beat up myself and beg (I’m not beyond begging for help) the community for help to get something done if I have to. It wasn’t as bad as I thought and I thought I would hopefully save someone a few keystrokes if you wanted to build a green screen for your customer.   Here’s the ValueConverter to handle changing the strings to decimals and then back again.  The value is a nullable valuetype so there are few extra steps to take.  Usually the “ConvertBack()” method doesn’t get addressed but in this case we have two-way binding and the converter needs to ensure that if the user doesn’t enter a value it will remain null when the value is reapplied to the model object’s setter.  1: using System; 2: using System.Windows.Data; 3: using System.Globalization; 4:  5: public class NullableDecimalToStringConverter : IValueConverter 6: { 7: public object Convert(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture) 8: { 9: if (!(((decimal?)value).HasValue)) 10: { 11: return (decimal?)null; 12: } 13: if (!(value is decimal)) 14: { 15: throw new ArgumentException("The value must be of type decimal"); 16: } 17:  18: NumberFormatInfo nfi = culture.NumberFormat; 19: nfi.NumberDecimalDigits = 4; 20:  21: return ((decimal)value).ToString("N", nfi); 22: } 23:  24: public object ConvertBack(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture) 25: { 26: decimal nullableDecimal; 27: decimal.TryParse(value.ToString(), out nullableDecimal); 28:  29: return nullableDecimal == 0 ? null : nullableDecimal.ToString(); 30: } 31: }            The ConvertBack() method uses TryParse to create a value from the incoming string so if the parse fails, we get a null value back, which is what we would expect.  But while I was testing I realized that if the user types something like “2..4” instead of “2.4”, TryParse will fail and still return a null.  The user is getting “puuu-lenty” of eye-candy to ensure they know how many values are affected in this particular view. Here’s the XAML code.   This is the simple part, we just have a DataGrid with one column here that’s bound to the the appropriate ViewModel property with the Converter referenced as well. 1: <data:DataGridTextColumn 2: Header="On-Hand" 3: Binding="{Binding Quantity, 4: Mode=TwoWay, 5: Converter={StaticResource DecimalToStringConverter}}" 6: IsReadOnly="False" /> Nothing too magical here.  Just some XAML to hook things up.   Here’s the code behind that’s handling the DataGridKeyup event.  These are wired to a local/private method but could be converted to something the ViewModel could use, but I just need to get this working for now. 1: // Wire up happens in the constructor 2: this.PicDataGrid.KeyUp += (s, e) => this.HandleKeyUp(e);   1: // DataGrid.BeginEdit fires when DataGrid.KeyUp fires. 2: private void HandleKeyUp(KeyEventArgs args) 3: { 4: if (args.Key == Key.Down || 5: args.Key == Key.Up || 6: args.Key == Key.Tab || 7: args.Key == Key.Enter ) 8: { 9: this.PicDataGrid.BeginEdit(); 10: } 11: }   And that’s it.  The ValueConverter was the biggest problem starting out because I was using an existing converter that didn’t take nullable value types into account.   Once the converter was passing back the appropriate value (null, “#.####”) the grid cell(s) and the model objects started working as I needed them to. • Data drive disappearing.

  We have a Windows 2003 R2 server with SP 2 here that randomly loses a partition. There are two partitions the C: and the D: (the one that disappears). When I go into Disk Management the space shows available on the drive but that it isn't formated. There are two drives that are set up in a RAID 1 array. There isn't anything sticking out in the event log as to something triggering this problem and thank god we do daily backups of the data, but it gets kind of annoying to have to go back in there and reformat the partition and restore the data. Any places I can poke around to find the cause of this or even better solutions to the problem would be appreciated.

Previously, the web server ran as an unprivileged user, with read-only access to user's files (unless the user changed the file permissions for some reason). Now, the web server can also write to user's files. So while I've prevented different users taking advantage of each other's scripts, I've made it so that in the event that some application has a remote code injection vulnerability, it now has not only read access but also write access to all that user's scripts and website. How can I deal with this? One idea I've had is to create a second user account for each user account in the system, so that each user has their own user account, and all their scripts are run under another user account. But that seems cumbersome.
