• Oracle and Cavium to work together on Java SE 8 on 64-bit ARMv8

  We have been working for some time on a standard Oracle JDK 8 port to the upcoming introduction of 64-bit servers based on the new ARMv8 micro architecture. At ARM TechCon 2013 in Santa Clara, California, we announced a roadmap with an expected GA in 2015. This project is going very well and is ahead of schedule. We will soon be at the point where we will make binaries available outside of Oracle - first in a managed beta program with select customers/partners, and sometime during the fall of 2014 as a public early access program. Unless something changes, we are looking at a early 2015 GA. We should be able to share a detailed ramp down and GA plan by JavaOne 2014. One of the things we (obviously) need to produce a high-quality port is hardware for development and QA. We are therefore happy to announce that we will be collaborating with Cavium on this project. Cavium has been a supporter of the Java ecosystem for a long time and we have numerous joint customers running various Java versions on Cavium MIPS and ARM-based hardware. Cavium has now agreed to provide us with development hardware and engineering resources so that we can certify and optimize the initial Oracle JDK 8 release on Cavium's ThunderX hardware. This is expected to improve quality and performance of JDK 8 on ARMv8 in general, as well as on Cavium's hardware. • USB Device first mounted as root, then by user

  When I connect my Kindle, it shows up as an usb0 media, which I can read but not write (owner = root). However, if I do sudo umount /media/usb0, usb0 gets unmounted and a Kindle media gets mounted properly (is writable etc.). What can cause such strange behavior? It's not only with Kindle, but with Flash drives etc. as well. • Wammu - USB Device Name?

  I'm trying to get to my phone's filesystem through USB in Wammu, but I'm stuck in the configuration wizard when it asks for a USB device name. After about an hour of Internet searching, here are the failed solutions I've already tried, starting with the relevant information returned by lsusb in terminal. lsusb Bus 001 Device 003: ID 12d1:101e Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. So I tried opening Wammu through sudo wammu in terminal and inputting "/dev/bus/usb/001/003" as the device name, which returns: Error opening device Device /dev/bus/usb/001/003 does not exist! and then "/dev/bus/usb/001/", which returns: Failed to connect to phone Description: Error opening device. Unknown, busy, or no permissions.<br> Function: Init<br> Error code: 2 Another proposed solution was to try "tail -f /var/log/messages" in terminal. But that only returned a "No such file or directory" message. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and the phone is a Huawei U1250. My computer is an Acer Aspire One D250/KAV60. Any help is much appreciated.

• Going to UKOUG in December? Meet the Fusion User Experience Advocates

  By Misha Vaughan, Oracle Applications User Experience The Oracle Fusion User Experience Advocates (FXA) will be hosting a roundtable event at UKOUG in December. The FXA program is run by me and Andrew Gilmour, my co-host and fellow team member from the Oracle Applications User Experience group. At this event, our Advocates will be doing the talking -- or rather, answering your questions. If you come to the roundtable, you will find out that the FXA members are a subset of Oracle ACE Directors who have taken on a commitment to participate in deep-dive training on the Oracle Fusion Applications User Experience, and then blend that training into their own areas of expertise – be it applications, Fusion Middleware, or SOA. The Advocates then make themselves available to local special-interest groups and geographic interest groups for public-speaking events, bringing with them a piece of the Fusion Applications user experience story – including demos. • Obtaining a world point from a screen point with an orthographic projection

  I assumed this was a straightforward problem but it has been plaguing me for days. I am creating a 2D game with an orthographic camera. I am using a 3D camera rather than just hacking it because I want to support rotating, panning, and zooming. Unfortunately the math overwhelms me when I'm trying to figure out how to determine if a clicked point intersects a bounds (let's say rectangular) in the game. I was under the impression that I could simply transform the screen point (the clicked point) by the inverse of the camera's View * Projection matrix to obtain the world coordinates of the clicked point. Unfortunately this is not the case at all; I get some point that seems to be in some completely different coordinate system. So then as a sanity check I tried taking an arbitrary world point and transforming it by the camera's View*Projection matrices. Surely this should get me the corresponding screen point, but even that didn't work, and it is quickly shattering any illusion I had that I understood 3D coordinate systems and the math involved. So, if I could form this into a question: How would I use my camera's state information (view and projection matrices, for instance) to transform a world point to a screen point, and vice versa? I hope the problem will be simpler since I'm using an orthographic camera and can make several assumptions from that. I very much appreciate any help. If it makes a difference, I'm using XNA Game Studio.

• General questions regarding open-source licensing

  I'm looking to release an open-source iOS software project but I'm very new to the licensing side of the things. While I'm aware that the majority of answers here will not lawyers, I'd appreciate it if anyone could steer me in the right direction. With the exception of the following requirements I'm happy for developers to largely do whatever they want with the projects source code. I'm not interested in any copyleft licensing schemes, and while I'd like to encourage attribution in derivative works it is not required. As such, my requirements are as follows: Original source can be distributed and re-distributed (verbatim) both commercially and non-commercially as long as the original copyright information, website link and license is maintained. I wish to retain rights to any of the multi-media distributed as part of the project (sound effects, graphics, logo marks, etc). Such assets will be included to allow other developers to easily execute the project, but cannot be re-distributed in any manner. I wish to retain rights to the applications name and branding. Futher to selecting an applicable license, I have the following questions: The project makes use of a number of third-party libraries (all licensed under variants of the MIT license). I've included individual licenses within the source (and application) and believe I've met all requirements expressed in these licenses, but is there anything else that needs to be done before distributing them as part of my open-source project? Also included in my project is a single proprietary, close-sourced library that's used to power a small part of the application. I'm obviously unable to include this in the source release, but what's the best way of handling this? Should I simply weak-link the project and exclude it entirely from the Git project?

• Is there a special way to set up Garry's Mod for Mac? [closed]

  I just downloaded Garry's Mod from Steam and every time I try to play Single Player on the first map, it crashes on the Loading Resources section of the progress bar. Here is some of the exception information the system prints out: Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x000000001acec4d0 Crashed Thread: 4 When I ran it on the Windows side (Bootcamp), Windows 7 required me to give Garry's Mod some permissions. I wasn't asked to do this on the Mac side. Maybe that's it? Is there some kind of special setup for the Mac?

• Is there a visual web application builder or rapid webapp prototyping framework?

  Question: Is there such a thing as a self-hosted framework or CMS especially tailored towards the creation of interactive web applications without -- or with an absolute minimum of -- programming? (Substantially less programming than say a simple Rails app or a plugin for Wordpress, Joomla etc would require.) As for desired features I'd settle for whatever is available, but some ideas could be: A User authentication and Permissions system. A GUI-driven input form builder. A GUI-driven template / visual site design builder. A simple scripting language (think AppleScript-like simplicity) A highly modular architecture, with high-level business objects (users, forms data, etc) exposed for easy re-use. If something like the above doesn't exist, then what comes near this? Need: This is for self-hosted rapid prototyping of web applications, and limited user testing of webapp user interface designs in a closed user test. Notes: I know about Ruby on Rails (Rails), Django, Pyramid etc. I'm looking for something much faster to work in, for making prototypes. I know about CMS's in general but find that most of them are tailored towards displaying information to the end users. If there is an exceptionally easy-to-master CMS with easy scripting (lets say much more so than for example Wordpress) then I'd be interested.

• AHCI and Memtest86+

  I've got a motherboard with SATA AHCI enabled, and I need to disable it to run Memtest86+ (because Window's built-in RAM diagnostic tool isn't worth a barrel of warm snot), and because the Memtest developers are too lazy to fix the bootloader problem. Fine, I know how to do that. The problem is, I, in a moment of insanity driven by the fact that I work with hardware RAID cards all the time, felt the need to enable the onboard RAID. In retrospect, this was stupid: the onboard raid is a joke, but I'm stuck with it. My question is, if I disable AHCI am I going to lose the RAID information? I haven't been able to find a definitive yes or no anywhere, and I'm not in the mood to find out the hard way.

• Why does changing the physical socket on your router cause delays?

  My question involves the delays involved with changing which physical socket your ethernet cable is connected to. I am aware that if you are connected to a router on a network and then change which physical socket on that router you are using you will gain very small additional delays initially. However I am curious as to what causes these delays. I originally thought it was to do with the infromation stored in the routing table and whether that was allocated to a specific socket on the router or not. Although, if your IP address is the same then I don't understand why there would be delays because I would of assumed that any information within the router was linked to an IP address rather than a physical socket.

• Branded Application Pages (layouts pages) in SharePoint 2010

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Application pages are now branded by default in SharePoint 2010. WOOHOO!!! The DynamicMasterPageFile attribute in SharePoint 2010 master pages allows application pages start using the site’s master page instead of the application master page. If you want backwards compatibility with SharePoint 2007, i.e. you want unbranded application pages, here is what you can do, a) You can change the MasterPageReferenceEnabled property to false in your SPWebApplication object, orb) Go to central administration\application management\manage web application\select your web app … go to the ribbon, look for general settings\general settings, and detach application pages from the site’s master page. • Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web ICT: second draft published from WCAG2ICT Task Force - for public review

  Last Thursday the W3C published an updated Working Draft of Guidance on Applying WCAG 2.0 to Non-Web Information and Communications Technologies. As I noted last July when the first draft was published, the motivation for this guidance comes from the Section 508 refresh draft, and also the European Mandate 376 draft, both of which seek to apply the WCAG 2.0 level A and AA Success Criteria to non-web ICT documents and software. This second Working Draft represents a major step forward in harmonization with the December 5th, 2012 Mandate 376 draft documents, including specifically Draft EN 301549 "European accessibility requirements for public procurement of ICT products and services". This work greatly increases the likelihood of harmonization between the European and American technical standards for accessibility, for web sites and web applications, non-web documents, and non-web software. As I noted last October at the European Policy Centre event: "The Accessibility Act – Ensuring access to goods and services across the EU", and again last month at the follow-up EPC event: "Accessibility - From European challenge to global opportunity", "There isn't a 'German Macular Degernation', a 'French Cerebral Palsy', an 'American Autism Spectrum Disorder'. Disabilities are part of the human condition. They’re not unique to any one country or geography – just like ICT. Even the built environment – phones, trains and cars – is the same worldwide. The definition of ‘accessible’ should be global – and the solutions should be too. Harmonization should be global, and not just EU-wide. It doesn’t make sense for the EU to have a different definition to the US or Japan." With these latest drafts from the W3C and Mandate 376 team, we've moved a major step forward toward that goal of a global "definition of 'accessible' ICT." I strongly encourage all interested parties to read the Call for Review, and to submit comments during the current review period, which runs through 15 February 2013. • Installing software after .wim image

  I have been looking all day into how to install software to a .wim image. I have a .wim image of a laptop that will be deplyed to 20 more. The image is pretty much good to go except I need to add a couple more drivers and a couple more applications. Is there a way to do this in the answer file? Do I have to deploy the image, install the drivers/application, sysprep, and recapture the image? Any information relating to this will be greatly appreciated. Leon ps I have only been using answer files and imagex. Would like to stick with this for the time being. I plan on using WDT and WDS when I have some time to learn about it.

• Learning from jQuery - Solid fundament for experienced jQuery developers

  Frankly speaking, I had to sleep a night over before typing this review. And even now it is not an easy, straight-forward task to write this recension. I'm not sure whether I'm the right kind of audience this title is actually addressed to. It clearly states that this book is for web developers which are very familiar with jQuery library but would like to extend their knowledge to vanilla JavaScript. Not being part of this particular group it felt strange to go through the various chapters after all. This title is clearly addressed to experienced jQuery users and developers especially while looking for improvements in performance and better ways of optimisations. Sometimes just to simplify the existing jQuery code in order to avoid the heavy load of the complete jQuery library and sometimes for the better understanding of JavaScript and its syntax. Callum's style of writing is clear and the numerous code samples used to emphasize the various techniques are good ones and easy to understand. Quite interestingly, it put a light smile on my face when I compared his sample code of sending an AJAX request to some code in one of my own blog articles I wrote back in 2006 (in German language). JavaScript is clearly a mature language and certain requirements are simply done this way. And Callum explains the nuts and bolts of JavaScript very well. Personally, I gained most out of this book from chapter 5 - JavaScript Conventions. The paragraphs and code snippets on Optimizations and Common Antipatterns gave me a better understanding on various aspects of JavaScript development, and I definitely have to revise a couple of code fragments I have written in the past. Overall the book provides solid information on JavaScript for jQuery developers and is worth the money spent. Just be sure that you're part of the targeted audience.

• Preparing Automatic Repair appears out of nowhere & takes forever?

  I shutdown my work machine (Windows 8.1 Pro) without any errors appearing (and without installing any new software and especially no new drivers the last couple days) yesterday evening, turned it on this morning and it automatically started into 'Preparing Automatic Repair' mode. 1st of - is there any way to get more information WHY this is appearing out of the blue and.. 2ndly, how long is this usually supposed to take? This is a rather beefy machine (Intel 3770k / 4 core 3.9ghz, Intel SSDs only and 32 gb of ram) but this screen has been 'loading' for almost 1.5 hours now. Is there any sort of debug/verbose mode that would give me ANY indication what's going on?

  Received a message from Google Webmaster Tools: Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 2 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 40.0%. You can see more details about these errors in Webmaster Tools. Recommended action Contacted HostPapa and they deny that there is any issue with the site / server!!! Support in terms of what I can do to actually resolve this issue is non-existent!!!! The site is currently online. And I don't know much about DNS... so any advice about what I can do to resolve this problem would be much appreciated.
