• Graphic Card Installation Failure (NV 9600M GT)

  I wanted to switch from 7 to Ubuntu. Now, the first thing that holds me back is the installation of the driver for my Nvidia 9600M GT. Ubuntu recommends me 4 drivers from the "Additional Driver" Section. Now, whatever driver I install, there are four things happening RANDOMLY after rebooting: The pc freezes before seeing bootup splash The pc freezes while seeing bootup splash image (ubuntu logo with the 5 dots) The pc gets into login screen and freezes instantly (Thought the unity-bar is transparent now) The pc freezes right after beeing able to login. (While this is happening the unity-bar changes from transparent to ugly-flat-style) I also tried to install the official Nvidia .run file but after exiting the X-Server, it says the driver is not compatible with the kernel and exits installation. Can somebody help me? I really wanna get rid of Windows :( But Ubuntu drives me perfectly insane. Please answer as noobish as possible. I'm an expert Windows user, but Linux is absolutely new to me. My Specs: Ubuntu 11.10 installed from USB Stick (like 100 times now :/ because I dont know how to remove the driver in recovery mode) 9600M GT 4GB Ram Intel Centrino 2 Dual Core 2.26GHz Win 7 and Ubuntu running along side. • Nvidia Ion HDMI output problems with Acer Revo

  I bought an Acer Revo. First I connected it to my Sony TV via HDMI output. For a few days it worked very well. Then one day when switching on the computer, it boots and the TV screen turns black and the TV displays the error message "no input signal". I connected the Revo to a Samsung LED TV, and it did the same. What do you guys think the problem is? How do I tackle this issue? Any help is deeply appreciated.

• Flash player stops working in Firefox

  First of all please be merciful as I am a 2 days ubuntu user. I've only used Windows OSs before. Hardware configuration -Quad Core Q6600 CPU -4 GB RAM -Geforce 8800GT 512 MB RAM -Seagate 320GB Harddisk I installed ubuntu x64 and everything went smooth. I had Adoble flash player installed from Ubuntu Software Center. The problem is that the flash videos on youtube (basically on all pages) looked pixelate. I use Firefox 3.6 that came with ubuntu by default. After reading around here I saw something about overriding hardware acceleration but that didn't work either. Or maybe I just didn't do it correctly. The problem was that if I opened 2-3 youtube tabs, when closing one of them, in 95% of the cases, the flash plugin would crash in remaining tabs and a black screen was instead of the video. After doing some more search I discovered the FlashAid extension for Firefox. I installed it and it made an update of flash plugin. Now the videos look good but now each time I watch a video, when switching to another one the flash plugin crashes and I can see insead of the vide the firefox message with Plugin has crasshed, refresh the page. Basically this is what I miss to have a complete pleasant ubuntu experience. Any ideas how to fix this? Thank you

My hardware specifications for the nebtook: -Be rugged enough to survive a bit of wear and tear -Fairly fast processing (the ability to upgrade from 1GB of RAM to 2GB) -A battery life of longer than 6 hours -At least a 10 inch screen -A decent camera for Skyping My software needs: -Be able run a Spreadsheet program to do basic data input (like Excel or Open Office) -Use the Open Source Statistical Program R to do basic data analysis (Regression, data analysis etc.) -Word Processing (Word or Open Office) Do you have any suggestions on which models or brands my fit my needs? • XNA C# Platformer - physics engine or tile based?

  I would like to get some opinions on whether i should develop my game using a physics engine (farseer physics seems to be the best option) or follow the traditional tile-based method. Quick background: - its a college project, my first game, but have 4 years academic programming experience - Just want a basic platformer with a few levels, nothing fancy - want a shooting mechanic, run and gun, just like contra or metal slug for example - possibly some simple puzzles I have made a basic prototype with farseer, the level is hardcoded with collisions and not really tiled, more like big full-screen sized tiles, with collision bodies drawn manually along the ground and walls etc. My main problem is i want a simple retro feel to the jumping and physics but because its a physics simulation engine its going to be realistic, whereas typical in air controllable physics for platformers arent realistic. I have to make a box with wheel body fixture under it to have this effect and its glitchy and doesnt feel right. I chose to use a physics engine because i tried the tile method initially and found it very hard to understand, the engine took care of alot things to save me time, mainly being able to do slopes easily was nice and the freedom to draw collision bounds wherever i liked, rather then restricted to a grid, which gave me more freedom for art design also. In conclusion i don't know which method to pick, i want to use a method which will be the most straight forward way to implement and wont give me a headache later on, preferably a method which has an abundance of tutorials and resources so i dont get "stuck" doing something which has been done a million times before! • EloTouch touchscreen suspends correctly but does not come out of standby on Ubuntu 10.04

  I am using an EloTouch touchscreen on a minimal Ubuntu 10.04 installation. I have a bare Xserver running without any desktop environment, just an xterm. The touchscreen is working great, but there is still one small problem. As soon as the touchscreen goes to standby, it is not coming out of standby when touching the screen. Using a keyboard or mouse does get it out of standby though. I am looking for any hints or directions to a cause of this problem. Is this an x.org configuration problem? A driver problem? Is this a known problem with touchscreens in general? Any pointers are welcome. The driver I am using is an unreleased EloTouch driver (3.5.0). I received it through a reseller who can not give me any technical information unfortunately.

• How can I disable the automatic switch to "library" mode in Windows 7's Media Player 12?

  Whenever I plug any USB device into my computer while running Windows Media Player 12 in Windows 7, it will automatically swtich the player from the Now Playing mode to Library mode. This is intended to faciliate syncing between Media Player and MP3 players, but it happens for any USB device. I'd like this to not happen since it's infuriating to see this take place while I'm watching something on a separate screen in Media Player just from plugging in a USB key. This has nothing to do with Windows autorun, and nothing to do with versions of Windows pre-7. And no, switching to some other video player is not an option; I've tried them all, none are as good as stock Media Player in 7.

• Windows Updates - Does Not Install, how can I remove it

  Everytime I shutdown my Windows XP, it comes up with the following screen which says Turn Off with Installing Updates (Of course, it also gives me an option as follows, "Click here to turn off without installing updates.") When I do a normal shutdown asking it to "Install Updates and Turn It Off", it doesn't actually install the updates. Each subsequent time I try to shut down the PC, it still prompts me to "Turn Off with Installing Updates". I managed to find out that the install was this: Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) update 1 of 1 .... When I click on the Installing Updates icon (the yellow icon, that appears on the task bar near the clock), and install it, it tries to install but fails: Why is this install alone failing? Secondly, if it's not possible to ascertain why the installation is failing, can I at least ensure that it's removed from the list of possible installs so that each time it does not ask me to install it?

  I just got the new Safari 5.0 I downloaded because my Mac told me there was a new version that I should be getting. But when I try to run this new version of the application -- nothing happens! I mean the program seems to be working but nothing appears on the screen and so when I try to see my top sites a little window shows up but it just doesn't show anything. • How to set up a (relatively) secure kiosk on Natty?

  I'm trying to get my application to be the only thing a user sees when the machine is powered on - like a kiosk, but a little more secure. Ideally, what I'd like to happen is this: At machine power-on, the user sees the Ubuntu splash image, then my app. While the app is running, the user can't get back to the desktop or a text login prompt via any keyboard shortcut. This is the (relatively) secure bit. When the user exits the app, the user sees a shutdown image, then the machine powers off. In particular, I'd like to configure things so that the user never sees the Gnome desktop on startup or shutdown. At the moment, I've configured a default user to be logged on automatically, with an autostart item which starts my app, but after the Ubuntu startup screen the user sees the Gnome desktop briefly before my app is started. When the app is exited, the user is taken back to the Gnome desktop and has to shut the machine down manually. Also, because of time constraints, I can't really start over with a different window manager. Is there an easy way to configure all of this?

• I can't "unmaximize" my window

  I've got a windows app (I don't think it matters which one, but in case you're wondering, it's SQL Server Profiler) that I can't put back into "windowed" mode. I can maximize or minimize it, either by right-clicking on the task bar and selecting maximize...or if the window is already maximized, I can click the minimize button to minimize it... The problem is when I click the middle button...the one that toggles between maximized and "windowed" mode, the windowed mode just makes it disappear. The program is still running fine, and I can bring it back up (maximized) by selecting it in the task bar. It doesn't seem to be hanging out on any of the edges of the screen...far as I can tell, it's just not there. And, of course, the app is "smart" enough to remember its status, so restarting the app doesn't help. Has anyone seen this? Know how to fix it?

• Strange IIS/Asp.net Exception Message

  I have a standard asp.net 2.0 application running on IIS 6. I have noticed some strange exception messages in the logs. They seem to be caused by random spam bots trying to submit forms. They are strange because the request string is huge and all the exception details in the event manager are messed up, they have been replaced with %21,%22, etc.. as seen in the screen shot. Is this some kind of exploit or just a bug in the asp.net exception handler/logger ? UPDATE: I traced the requests that are causing this strange log event to a bug in IE8 that causes it to request scriptresource.axd?d={html from page} as described in these links: MS Connect SO - Invalid Webresource.axd SO - IE8 Dropping Memory Pages I am still not sure why these requests would break the IIS log event like seen above, they are just long strings of jiberish being sent to the server, maybe someone reading this can shed some light on it.

• Eclipse Juno failing to start with Java returning 1 error report

• 'Unsaved Theme' is not appearing when I make a change to a theme in Windows 7

  According to personal experience and Microsoft documentation, when an aspect of a theme (wallpaper, border colour, etc) is changed in the 'Personalization' screen of Windows 7, a theme called Unsaved Theme is supposed to be created/exist under the 'My Themes' heading. However, my 'My Themes' section is always empty, and if I change the background by clicking on the Background link at the bottom of the Personalization page, the background changes, but it still shows 'Harmony' as the selected background, and no 'Unsaved Theme' is created. I have no idea how long this has been happening, but I would like to create some themes, but it never acknowledges my changes as it is supposed to.

• Launcher icon size and window behavior broken

  I have installed the nvidia driver for my graphic card, just following some tutorials what works fine now. After this I could set the Icon size of the launcher, windows had a nice litte shadow, resolution was better and the windows showed up a nice effect when popping up an or when bringing to full-screen... But today the this was just gone after reboot. What could this be? Nvidia xserver-settings are availible. I installed and reinstalled wine1.5 via the apt-get commands, so this might broke something. What can do to fix this again? Greetings philipp EDIT: I went on searching and all i found was that this problem might be connected to the mode of unit, so there is 2d and 3d, but could also be something else, just because setting the mode brings no change. EDIT 2: the version of Ubuntu is: 12.04 and it is a 64 bit environment the graphic card is: GeForce GT 330M Edit 3: Using maps.google in webGL mode does not work anymore too, it was working yesterday. EDIT 4: the screenshot. btw: I think that blender is not working anymore too... EDIT: 5 I think that the problem is closely connected to this output

• How do I nstall MS Office 2010 via WINE?

  I am trying to install MS Office 2010 on Ubuntu 12.04 on my new MacBook Pro (15"). I already read and followed every existing threads on forums and followed every existing tutorial, but my problem seem unique so far, since whichever solution I try, the problem remains. When I launch PlayOnLinux, two boxes appear one after the other (before the latest upgrade of Ubuntu of last week, the second box did not appear, only the first one did); the first one tells me: Error: PlayOnLinux is unable to find 32-bits OpenGL libraries. You might encounter problem with your games." When I close this window, a second one pops up, stating: Error: PlayOnLinux cannot find 7z. You should install it to use PlayOnLinux. Of course, I tried purging PlayOnLinux (uninstalling it and re-installing it). I also tried other versions of PlayOnLinux. Nothing matters: the problem remains. I did not succeed so far to install 32-bits OpenGL libraries, since I have a Radeon graphics card (which seems to be unusual) and I just cannot find these libraries. Once the two "error" boxes are closed, PlayOnLinux is open, but does not seem to work properly; when I try to install Microsoft Office 2010, nothing happens. When I try to close PlayOnLinux, it is even worse: Unity seems unable to close it (I even had a frozen screen when trying to xkill it through the terminal). • Help with setting up AIM account

  Can anyone help me configure my AIM account? I have Oneiric and I want to set up my AIM account with what I believe is a chat client (the envelope icon on the top right). It is called Empathy. \n I tried to do this using Broadcast Account. It let me choose what account (Jabber, Pidgin, Aim, etc...). Once I entered my password for my AIM account, I got a pop-up asking for the master password for my Keyring. I didn't know what that was at the time so I closed that window after trying to enter my account password. Keyring apparently asks for a master password and it holds any keys you want to remember in the future. It gave me an error so I couldn't set up my AIM account completely. Now I'm trying to get back to that screen but I can only set up a Twitter or Facebook. Thanks, Aaron P.S. Can anyone tell me how to break the message up so it doesn't appear all on one line? I tried 'coding' a \n...seemed to work.

• How to reset display settings in XFCE \ Ubuntu 12.04 and also flgrx drivers

  I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and since I hate unity I installed the Xubuntu package and am using XFCE instead. Since I have a Radeon HD5770 I also installed the fglrx drivers. This all went fine (aside from the fact that the post-release update fglrx drivers have an error on installation and Ubuntu thinks they're not installed when they actually are. I configured my display settings (dual monitors, a 17" CRT on VGA and a 17" LCD on DVI) in the amdcccle program and everything was perfect. THEN, 2 days ago, I accidentally clicked on the "Display" settings in XFCE "settings" manager. After that, everything got screwed. Now, I normally run the CRT at 1152x854 and the LCD at 1280x1024 with the CRT as my primary monitor (with panel) and the LCD without panels etc just to display other windows when I want to drag them over there. The problem is now that if I set my CRT to 1152x864, it stays at 1280x1024 virtually and half the stuff falls off the screen. It also puts the LCD at 1280x1024 BUT then overlays the CRT's display ontop with different wallpaper in an L shape down the right-hand and bottom edges. In short, nothing makes sense and everything is FUBAR. I tried uninstalling fglrx through synaptic, and renaming xorg.conf and also the xfce XML file that has monitor settings but it still won't make sense. Unity on the other hand can currently set everything normally so the problem appears to be only with XFCE. In any case, I can't even get the fglrx drivers back, when I re-installed them, I can't run amdccle anymore as it says the driver isn't installed!! Can someone help me reset my XFCE settings so the monitors aren't screwed with some incorrect virtual desktop size and also so I can get fglrx drivers back and working? I really don't want to have to format and reinstall and go through all the hassle but it looks like I may have to :(

  We have a custom MembershipProvider implementation using form-based authentication (FBA) under Sharepoint 2007. I've searched high and low on Google, but only found: Active directory and FBA implementations to allow users to change their own password Active directory instructions (including video!) for administrators to change other users' passwords Have we missed an option to enable the latter under FBA? Should this work by default and is the MembershipProvider misbehaving? The procedure to do this as under active directory would be ideal, but the "Change Password" link does not appear in the Edit User screen. We verified that the logged-in user is a site collection administrator.

  Few months ago I am looking for a editor to doing simply edit on html,css,javascript.  Before it I tried notepad++ which is quite awesome to do all works I want to get done with him.  I choose 2 editor on my list. first is sublime text and second is phpstorm. both are cross-plateform. I tried both and both is working fine. I finally go with sublime text 2.   Here is the reason why sublime text 2 is awesome. phpstorm and sublime text 2 both is licensed  software. In sublime text 2 you can use it for unlimited time when phpstorm is available for 30 days only. Sublime text 2 is very memory efficient and lightweight software this is first thing people found best in sublime text 2. in phpstorm problem for me is sometime it’s goes unresponsive when I tried html5 boilerplate. sublime text 2 is never hang depend on memory size of project compare to phpstorm. in Sublime text 2 you can got better speed at coding after learning some shortcut and basic thing applied specially sublime text 2. Sublime text 2 come with distraction free mode when phpstorm have nothing with full-screen. Sublime text 2 support almost every language. I have seen many people in community who has move from their PHP IDE to sublime text 2. You can use LESS and coffeescript in it. There are many kind of customization out in github regarding sublime text 2.   In past I also have also tried webmatrix. the latest version of webmatrix have nothing good as sublime text 2. • Remote Desktop with resource sharing

  I recently removed ubuntu from my laptop and installed Windows 7 because Microsoft's DreamSpark program gave me Visual Studio Pro for free and I want to do some C# programming with it. The problem is that my laptop's screen is small, it's resources are extremely limited, and it doesn't have a full sized keyboard. However, I do have a desktop that is my primary system, and it's got a quadcore and tons of RAM in it, and dual monitors. My question is this, is there a way I can use a program from my laptop, on my desktop, and share my desktops CPU and RAM with the laptop? Everything is connected through a 100 MB/s switch. One caveat, my desktop is running ubuntu.
