• Understanding the passing of data/life of a script in web development/CodeIgniter

  I hope I worded the title accurately enough but I typically use Java and don't have much experience in Web Development/PHP/CodeIgniter. I have a difficult time understanding the life cycle of a script as I found out trying to implement a certain feature to a website I am developing (as a means of learning how to). I'll first describe the feature I tried implementing and then the problem I ran into that made me question my fundamental understanding of how scripts work since I'm used to typical OOP. Ok so here goes... I have a webpage that has 2 basic tasks a user can do, create and delete an entry. What I attempted to implement was a way to time a user how long it takes them to complete a certain task. The way I did this was have a homepage where there would be a list of tasks a user to choose from (in this case 2, create and delete). A user would click a task which would link to the 'true' homepage where the user then would be expected to complete the task. Now there's no error in the code but it doesn't do what I expect of it and the reason I assume why is because that each time a function of the script is called via a new page it is NOT the same instance of the script called previously so any previously created objects are no longer there. This confuses me and leaves me quite unsure of how to implement this gracefully. Some ways I would guess of how to do this is by passing the necessary data through the URL or have data saved in a database and retrieve it later to compare the times. What would be a recommended way to do, not just this, but anything that needs previously created data? Also, am I correct to think that a script is only 'alive' for one webpage at a time? Thanks!

• Does my basic PHP Socket Server need optimization?

  Like many people, I can do a lot of things with PHP. One problem I do face constantly is that other people can do it much cleaner, much more organized and much more structured. This also results in much faster execution times and much less bugs. I just finished writing a basic PHP Socket Server (the real core), and am asking you if you can tell me what I should do different before I start expanding the core. I'm not asking about improvements such as encrypted data, authentication or multi-threading. I'm more wondering about questions like "should I maybe do it in a more object oriented way (using PHP5)?", or "is the general structure of the way the script works good, or should some things be done different?". Basically, "is this how the core of a socket server should work?" In fact, I think that if I just show you the code here many of you will immediately see room for improvements.   So basically what I need my program to do at this point is that when I click the submit button, I need to loop through each dynamic row of the ListView and grab the value in the EditText view and then insert that into an array which I will do further calculations after.   I am attempting to migrate data from an Microsoft Content Management Server (MCMS) 2002 instance into a new Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server (MOSS) 2007 installation using the Manage Microsoft Content Management Server Migration Profiles tool in the Operations space of MOSS Central Administration. When analyzing the profile, I receive 4 warnings, all of which may be safely ignored, but when I actually execute the migration profile, I get the same warnings and an additional error with a description of: Line 6: Incorrect syntax near ';'. I have seen this error numerous times when mucking about in SQL Server and recognize it as a Transact SQL error message, but can't find the actual SQL statement that is being executed so that I may determine the source of the error. EDIT: After enabling verbose logging on the MCMS 2002 Migration category, and poring through the Unified Logging Service (ULS) logs, I received a more complete stack trace at the point of the error, and a couple more anomalies listed below.   I'm creating a cell profile on Linux Mint 12 , WAS 8.0 Network Deployment Trial. But using manageProfiles.sh or Profile Management Tool, I can not create any profile (cell, application ...). • unexplainable packet drops with 5 ethernet NICs and low traffic on Ubuntu

  I'm stuck on problem where my machine started to drops packets with no sign of ANY system load or high interrupt usage after an upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04. My server is a network monitoring sensor, running Ubuntu LTS 12.04, it passively collects packets from 5 interfaces doing network intrusion type stuff. Before the upgrade I managed to collect 200+GB of packets a day while writing them to disk with around 0% packet loss depending on the day with the help of CPU affinity and NIC IRQ to CPU bindings. Now I lose a great deal of packets with none of my applications running and at very low PPS rate which a modern workstation NIC would have no trouble with. Specs: x64 Xeon 4 cores 3.2 Ghz 16 GB RAM NICs: 5 Intel Pro NICs using the e1000 driver (NAPI). [1] eth0 and eth1 are integrated NICs (in the motherboard) There are 2 other PCI-X network cards, each with 2 Ethernet ports. 3 of the interfaces are running at Gigabit Ethernet, the others are not because they're attached to hubs. On the old system, if it couldn't keep up this is where the drops would be. I drop packets on multiple interfaces just about every second, usually in small increments of 2-4. I can't figure out why my PCI-X slots are negotiated as PCI. The network cards are all PCI-X with the exception of the integrated NICs that came with the server. In the output below it looks as if eth3 and eth2 negotiated at PCI-X speeds rather than PCI:66Mhz. Wouldn't they all drop to PCI:66Mhz? If your integrated NICs are PCI, as labeled below (eth0,eth1), then wouldn't all devices on your bus speed drop down to that slower bus speed? If not, I still don't know why only one of my NICs ( each has two ethernet ports) is labeled as PCI-X in the output below. • Sendmail Failing to Forward Locally Addressed Mail to Exchange Server

  I've recently gained employment as a web developer with a small company. What they neglected to tell me upon hire was that I would be administrating the server along with my other daily duties. Now, truth be told, I'm not clueless when it comes to these things, but this is my first rodeo working with a rack server/console.. However, I'm confident that I will be able to work through any solutions you provide. Short Description: When a customer places an order via our (Magento CE 1.8.1.0) website, a copy of said order is supposed to be BCC'd to our sales manager. I say supposed because this was a working feature before the old administrator left. Long Description: Shortly after I started, we had a server crash which required a server restart. After restart, we noticed a few features on our site weren't working, but all those have been cleaned up except this one. I had to create an account on our server for root access. When a customer places an order, our sites software (Magento CE 1.8.1.0) is configured to BCC the customers order email to our sales manager. We use a Microsoft Exchange 2007 Server for our mail, which is hosted on a different machine (in-house) that I don't have access to ATM, but I'm sure I could if needed. As far as I can tell, all other external emails work.. Only INTERNAL email addresses fail to deliver. I know this because I've also tested my own internal address via our website. I set up an account with an internal email, made a test order, and never received the email. I changed my email for the account to an external GMail account, and received emails as expected. Let's dive into the logs and config's. For privacy/security reasons, names have been changed to the following: domain.com = Our Top Level Domain. email.local = Our Exchange Server. example.com = ANY other TLD. • Blocking all RIPE Addresses in Server 2008?

  Our datacenter has recommended we block all RIPE IP Addresses on one of our machines. It is constantly being DDoS Attacked everytime the null routes are lifted, so I am not sure how this would help, but am more than willing to try anything now. I couldn't find much information on it from a Google search, but how can we block all RIPE IP Ranges? Preferably I wouldn't even mind blocking all Ranges that were not US Based since that is the only target we traffic, but this is probably too difficult.

• ISAPI filter with LDAP over SSL only works as administrator

  I have created an ISAPI filter for IIS 6.0 that tries to authenticate against Active directory using LDAP. The filter works fine when authenticating regularly over port 389, but when I try to use SSL, I always get the 0x51 Server Down error at the ldap_connect() call. Even skipping the connect call and using ldap_simple_bind_s() results in the same error. The weird thing is that if I change the app pool identity to the local admin account, then the filter works fine and LDAP over SSL is successful. I created an exe with the same code below and ran it on the server as admin and it works. Using the default NETWORK SERVICE identity for the site's app pool is what seems to be the problem. Any thoughts as to what is happening? I want to use the default identity since I don't want the website to have elevated admin privileges. The server is in a DMZ outside the network and domain where our DCs are that run AD. We have a valid certificate on our DCs for AD as well. The web server with the ISAPI filter (and where I've been running the test exe) is running Windows Server 2003. The DCs with AD on them are running 2008 R2. Also worth mentioning, we have a WordPress site on the same server that authenticates against LDAP over SSL using PHP (OpenLDAP) and there's no problem there. I have an ldap.conf file that specifies TLS_REQCERT never and the user running the PHP code is IUSR.

• Why is my cron daemon is being killed every few minutes? OpenVZ?

  As of about a week ago, my cron daemon refuses to stay running. I'm using Debian 6. Running something like pgrep cron shows that the daemon isn't running. I start the service with service cron start or /etc/init.d/cron start and it launches, but it disappears from the running process list after a few minutes (varying anywhere between 1 - 30 minutes before the process is killed again). • MySQL Execution Time Spikes

  I am having issues with MySQL all of the sudden today. Details: OS: CentOS release 5.7 Server type: Parallels virtuozzo container running on mediatemple DV 4.0 package Average total memory usage: <500mb Total memory usage allowed: 1gb (part of shared pool for emergency only, users are only guaranteed 500mb) Processor: 1ghz Main database sizes with most usage: 275mb & 107mb server stack: nginx 1.0.10, mysql 5.1.54, php 5.3.8 with php-fpm innodb_buffer_pool_size=100M php-fpm max children: 5 Webapps: custom php-based sites, magento & drupal slow query timeout is set to 1 second Steps I completed towards diagnosis: Cannot restart container yet - I will try later tonight when our domestic traffic has dropped Enabled mysql and php-fpm slowlog. Found functions that did DB queries in php-fpm slowlog were taking over 1s to complete at times Found some simple queries in mysql slowlog taking well over 1s to complete that should take less than 1s. Most interesting - execution time seems to spike at times. A query will take .2s a couple times, then one time it will take 8s to run the same query. These results were verified by running raw SQL queries through mysql command line. Top does not reveal anything too interesting Only resource related thing i can see is load averages much higher than normal Up until today, mysql has been fine, there have been no major changes to the db since yesterday. Sometimes things are so bad, I am seeing bad gateway errors after 60s of execution time. Innodb is doing on average 300-1400 reads/sec. Mysql is doing 3-10 queries/sec slow query count in 2 hours uptime is 171 (with slow timeout at 1 second) Tried restarting mysql, nginx, php-fpm multiple times For example: UPDATE `catalogsearch_query` SET `query_text` = 'EW 90', `num_results` = '7532', `popularity` = '99180', `redirect` = NULL, `synonym_for` = NULL, `store_id` = '1', `display_in_terms` = '1', `is_active` = '1', `is_processed` = '1', `updated_at` = '2012-05-08 21:38:31' WHERE (query_id='31'); This query took 17sec to complete one time, rest of the time around .079 sec. But varies, sometimes 1sec, sometimes .004 sec. This is running the same query, over and over with a couple seconds time in between each. Most tables are innodb, and sometimes I noticed the lock time taking 90% of the query execution time, but most of the time lock time is insignificant. Any idea what's going on here?

• Is it reasonable that a random disk seek & read costs ~16ms?

  I am frustrated about the latency of random reading from a non-ssd disk. Based on results from following test program, it speeds ~16 ms for a random read of just 512 bytes without help of os cache. I tried changing 512 to larger values, such as 25k, and the latency did not increase as much. I guess it is because the disk seek dominates the time. • Fast user switching suddenly stopped working on my Windows XP Prof machine

  When I start Win XP SP2 I get to the welcome screen with no user names displayed. I then press Alt+Ctrl+Del twice and type in the username and then am able to login to Windows. When I go to user accounts in Control Panel I get the error message cells.item(...) is null or not an object. When I go to computer administration and then local users and groups there are no users listed under users but the groups is listed. I did a windows repair with no luck. I tried doing restore points but it said they didn’t work. Please help? My wife and I have been using fast user switching on out computer for years with no problem. I have done system point restores and imports of exports of the registry I take with import. I have tried everything under safe mode and it makes no difference. This followed a Microsoft update the night before as I left the computer on. I tried to do a restore point but all my restore points failed and could not backout the MS updates. I was working with a fellow from Microsoft and he had me do all kinds of things but to no avail. He seems to think a DLL file is corrupt but which one? Finally in desperation he sent me a new OS XP Prof SP3 disk and I installed it and it wiped my hard drive. Luckily I took an Acronis Image backup first so I easily restored my system. I do not want to do a fresh windows update as it is heavily customized and worked fine up to that point. This has been going on for months, Thanks John

• Strange permission errors with Windows Server 2008

  I just don't know a better way to describe my issue that is driving me nuts. I am trying to establish a test domain with virtual machines on a box that has Win7 with VMwware workstation installed. The purpouse with this domain will be so that we can try and test different situations before they go into the production network. I build a VM with WinSrv2008R2 and I am using that VM as a template to make other servers for the domain by making clones of it. Now I raise a DC with one clone and a member server with another clone - I add the server to the domain. I am following a standard procedure as always (it is not my first domain). Then I make an admin account and I am adding the admin to be a member of the Domain and Enterprise Admins group. That admin is admin with full priviledges on the DC.. no problem there. But on the other server has ... somewhat half the privileges and I cant log in via RDP. I tryed with another account. Same issues. For example (with half the privileges): I can't open the Even Viewer if I go via Start - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer. But I can open the Even Viewer via the server manager. You can notice this on the image below. I mean WTF??? I am going crazy, I haven't experienced anything similar in my three years of expertise. I already lost 3 days troubleshooting this. Could this be related with the cloning? Perhaps if I make fresh installs of WinSrv2008 there won't be any problems? I've had raised test domains as VMs on other occasions before, and there weren't any problems then. This is VMware Workstation 8. I've made clones before, on Workstation 7 it didn't had any problems.   I tried this both on Windows 7 and Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6). While vrdpauthtype null works (everyone can connect to VMs without user name/password) vrdpauthtype external doesn't work (and RDC connections are just rejected). Did anyone ever get this to work?
